Brenda Mohammed has produced a great short story in Revenge of Zeeka. The plot isn't complex but it has been delivered in a way the reader is kept interested as the pages are turned. The plot is driven forward by dialogue which is I feel for this length of story is good.
Character detail is good and romance and intrigued are played out in this well written zombie story. Everything is not as it seems and the author keeps you guessing. Among the characters is a detective, Jack Wilby. He is likeable and believable. Hopefully, Mohammed will allow us to meet him again in another story?
Really a bit of a mad on this but I really liked it. Very quick read and if I have on criticism it is that it needed to be longer to flesh it out a bit more although I note there are more books in the series. It was a fun read for me and I am a big fan of all things zombie. The problem with many books like this is that they follow the same outline. Here the author has an original twist, No spoilers but I have to say that was what I liked most about the book. I am not sure how many books are in the series but I will go back for more with confidence having read and thoroughly enjoyed this clever little tale.
With the Zika virus sweeping through South America and reaching the United States, the concerns about what will happen to the infected babies is foremost on many people's mind. While this is a zombie novel (fiction), and not a medical thriller or non-fiction expose, it does provide some thought provoking (and disturbing) insight into some of the theories which have emerged about the origins of the virus and its impact upon our most vulnerable populations.
I like weird stories. Not everything has to be set in a world you know, and perhaps my favourite author, Stephen King is my favourite because he turns the normal into abnormal effortlessly. For author Brenda Mohammed's latest work, we are pulled into the genre of zombie horror, which has seen a massive resurgence in recent years.
What I love about this first short story in the series is how, like King, the author has her characters Mark and Raynor going about their normal lives when eyes really start to play tricks on them, and the question is for us, dear readers, is positioned thus:-
Can we trust what we see with our own eyes, or is this a vision, hallucination, or some other mind trick being played on us by some evil entity?
Possibly the answer is yes to each element of that question.
Rather than being a full blown horror, this first story serves as a tasty morsel (I really shouldn't use such lines in a review about flesh eating zombies!) to what is to come. Who is the mysterious Zeeka? Why does he want revenge? Not everything is answered here, but will be in future stories in the series. At its relatively short length, it is the perfect introduction to this author's writing, which I am seeing a great growth with each work she pens.
My favourite character is actually Detective Jack Wildy. There is so much that cold be done with this character, he reminds me of Jack Lord of Hawaii-5-0 (original, people!) fame.
This is an action packed novella that has several plot lines running, but at no time did I feel lost. Each character seamlessly interacted with others, and there's an interesting man hunt happening which will stretch resources of the said Detective to breaking point. Raynor's impending marriage to long-time love Janet might not happen after all.
These different plot lines keep you reading, and keep you guessing. Despite its length I did not read this book in one sitting. I wanted to absorb the cleverly interlinked plotlines. In fact, there's not a lot of the mysterious Zeeka of the title in this first story, and I think that's a clever decision by the author.
This is a story about a mad scientist who got really mad. We do not learn about him and his motives much in this book since it’s just the first part of the series. Yet Brenda Mohammed shows us the first consequences of his madness in this clever story about a virus outbreak leading to an emergence of strange zombie-like people. The fast pace and amount of action keeps this story thrilling. At the same time, the author manages to give us a glimpse of the main characters’ feelings that do not concern the zombies directly. We can observe a young doctor planning her marriage and her admirer’s disappointment. This seems to be a plot within the main plot, and it makes this story more complex, the characters easier to relate to, which is not easy to achieve in such a short story that is packed with action. Yet there is a final twist that reveals to us that personal lives of the main protagonists may be infected by Zeeka’s influence more than it seems at first glance.
This book leaves many questions unanswered and makes me look forward to reading the sequels. I can even imagine this book as a good movie.
This is a good zombie story and a great beginning to the series. Brenda Mohammed is clearly a talented writer. The action is fast and plentiful, and the author spends a good amount of time developing her characters, which is impressive for a story that is on the short side. I recommend checking out this story and then following up with the other books in the series!
A thriller and suspenseful read right down to the very last page. The author has a keen sense of telling a story. Great imagination, description is on point. It is an interesting read that you will enjoy. This copy was given to me by the author for an honest review.
