In brief: solid plot + hot steamy goodness = my favorite HR recipe!
While I read almost all types of romance novels, I have to admit that my favorites tend to be smutty historicals with a good story line to keep me interested and connect with the characters... and this book delivered on most of my requirements. Untamed Duke is the second book in the Tamed series, though it is not necessary to have read the first book to enjoy this one.
Nicholas August Harris March has recently become the 9th Duke of Richeforte. While he is referred to in polite company as, "Your Grace," behind closed doors, they call the powerful yet ice cold 27 year old "The Winter Wolf" as it is said he does not possess a heart in his dealings with anyone, and women in particular. He has vowed never to marry nor provide heirs to perpetuate the dukedom that his abusive father twisted for his own purposes at the expense of others. In addition to the insufferable childhood Nicholas endured, he was accused by his best friends of behaving dishonorably and has been estranged from the men he considered to be his brothers since. The last thing he wants anything to do with is Lady Grace Willsdown, aka "The Cornwall Storm" and also beloved cousin of his former best friend (Sebastian, the male main character from the previous book in the series). Grace wants nothing more than to spend her days riding horses and running her breeding business, and her nights reading any and every book she can get her hands on.
When Nicholas and Grace discover that what Grace believed to be her inheritance (her home, stables, and prized horses) is encumbered from the former Duke of Richeforte's business dealings with her father, she is devastated. Though she knows of his reputation, Grace believes that she can negotiate with the duke and comes to him to ask for the entirety of the estate to be restored to her as sole owner in exchange for her services (initially her horse breeding services). Nicholas is intrigued when the woman he unwillingly finds himself attracted to ups the ante and throws herself in the pot. For Grace, she never intends to marry, so purity is not something she that holds value to her, and she admits that the duke sparks something in her that no other man has before. The bargain has been struck --- 5 nights of Nicholas' choosing with Grace however he wants her, and in exchange, Grace gets her estate and all that resides upon it. Simple enough, right?
I loved the immediate chemistry between the two main characters, and the fact that despite his firm resolve to drive Grace away (even when he believes it is for her own good), she refuses to allow him to do so. She challenges him as no one else has in a long time, and she is determined to break down his walls and show him that there is still a man who can love under the icy facade. I also liked the story --- the angst factor was not as high as many are in books with similar plots, which I appreciated. The love scenes were scorching level hot, and the development of the relationship between the two seemed to be realistic. Re the HEA,

Unfortunately my attention towards books such as these have vaned. This I say with utmost sadness as Regency/Historical Romance is one of my favorite genres. It is not in the genre but more like the fact that when a story does not manage to give me so much to write about at the end I feel like the book has not done its job. The romance was quite sweet but the sweetness at points were so overdone I felt as I’ve gotten an ache in my tooth from it.
It is not as bad as it seems from reading my review, compared to other regency novels this did do better. But like I’ve mentioned beforehand, I feel like I’ve grown over these types of novels.

I simply adore Grace & Nicholas.

I love it when new-to-me authors pleasantly surprise. This was my first April Moran book, and it is not going to be my last.
This book was one long slow seduction that kept the reader glued to it.
Quick Review
- I loved this emotionally charged story. Ms Moran's writing is very engaging, as is evident since I read it in a single sitting. I did not even pause to post updates on GR, as I was so invested in turning pages!
- I loved how the plot branched out and then came back together in resolution. Very few authors manage to navigate the nuances of multiple subplots seamlessly, but this author made a wonderful work of it.
- What kept me hooked was this weird, a little cruel, a little sad, a little torturous, but a whole lot of beautiful romance with a generous helping of steamy goodness thrown in for good measure.
- I admired Grace's perseverance and forbearance. The girl kept at it relentlessly, even when I was shaking my head and willing her to give up. My heart was breaking for her, but she showed more spine than a bunch of other HR heroines combined. Apart from that, she was a textbook heroine, wanting to fix the hero with her love, and dare I say it, her - not for the lack of a better word, but to protect delicate sensibilities - charms.
- Nicholas was a project waiting to happen, seriously. Generally, I have realised there are three types of HR heroes - Broken, Broken, and BROKEN. Somehow, Nicholas was all three. He was at times very punishing, cruel, hurtful, but other times he was generous, loving, hurting, and downright besotted. Why do all ducal heirs suffer so? Anyhow, his transformation from a rakish jackass to a loving, utterly hopelessly besotted fool was so adorable. His little journal notes are what redeemed him.
- The side characters intrigued me enough to want to read the other books in the series.
Special Mention - The stable fire, I cried. I wept.
*On a side note, how *cocky* is this cover art?
My Recommendation
I am operating on like three hours of sleep and travel fatigue, so my review may not speak volumes about how intensely emotional and angsty read this was. An author definitely worth exploring.

Grace and Nicholas, the two who never plan to marry...
I don't know why I didn't get into this more. It's a set up I usually love;
Nicholas is the quintessential tortured hero who plays the wicked man because that is what is expected of him. Grace is used to running her own life since her parents died and her guardian lets her do as she will.
He usually chooses women who won't cling, but he just can't resist Grace. She's never been attracted to a man until him.
He used to be best friends with Grace's cousin until a falling out over a woman.
Sounds great, but it was so transparent and there really wasn't much to the plot.. if you can even call it a plot.
Half the story is sexy times.
I kept putting the story down and reading other stuff because I was bored.
So I guess it's just me.
Safety is pretty good.

I think this book might well be my find read of the year as far as historicals go.
This author writes like some of the best and my favorites! A true find. We start off rather glum then fun. We meet our Duke as a young child, with a rotten Father and childhood. It’s very important later.
Then the fun....Our Lady Grace, a blonde and honey eyed goddess is being pursued by her wards son Lord Tristan. He’s not a bad guy, but she’s not interested, so she pretends a faint, he runs off to get help....
In walks our Winter Wolf. The Duke of Richeforte
He’s blonde, green eyed, 27. Gorgeous & broken. By women, by a father, by friends.
He will melt your heart immediately. His brooding manner cannot understand what it is about Grace he’s so attracted to. The scene in the maze had my heart racing double time.
Our Grace though, is a FANTASTIC heroine. She’s been thru much. Her parents died, her Father was a horse breeder and her home will come to her in just 6 months, her only plans are to return & continue raising her prime horse stock.
They easily become enthralled with each other, it’s quite a slow burn dance. Two people, truly both of them, never thought they’d ever care enough about another. Neither planned on ever falling in love, let alone any kind of marriage.
The slow burn stays there as they journey back to their respective homes.
Unfortunately, she had heard a conversation between our Duke, Nicholas and Tristan. Nicholas holds the title, he thinks on her home estate. She’s crushed by this event, and comes up with a plan.
She travels to his home under the guise of horse breeding to make a bargain. 5 nights for her home. I thought as I was reading this, here we go I’ve read many of these, boy was I wrong. Nicholas has insane willpower, after days and many things happening, she’s still an innocent. They accomplished a lot though! LOL
But, they’ve fallen, both of them, in love.
I loved reading Graces thoughts....
“She couldn’t help herself, wishing she might heal him in some way. Foolish of me......wanting to show him kindness and understanding. Eventually, he’ll use that weakness against me.”
I loved reading Nicholas thoughts......
“She was heaven and freedom......warmth and innocence. Like laughter. Sunshine and lemonade, Summer and light. Like joy. All this, I no longer possess.”
They were steam and smoke and SEXY as all out though!
They’re banter was amazing, fun and sexy. The layers of these characters are pealed off exquisitely. I was completely enamored of both of them.
She returns home, and 2 weeks later he pursues her. There, her cousin the Earl of Ravenswood arrives with his new wife, Ivy. (I’ll be reading this book next, I went out of order and was fine btw). There’s unresolved bad blood between Sebastian and Nicholas, there’s a fire in the stables, all kinds of things continue to draw theses two together......
Until they do. It’s breathtaking the way Grace fights for our Duke. It’s amazing his fall.
It kept me up all night reading! I loved every word. Scorching HOT.
I cannot tell you how much I’ve left out of this book, so much. It’s wonderful storytelling, it’s seductive, it’s erotic, it’s heart melting. It’s literally one of my best reads of the year.

This is the second book in The Taming series. I have not read the first book and was able to follow along without issue, but the first book's couple does play a role in this story as that hero and this hero are former best friends.
I adored this book! It had been sitting on my TBR for way too long and I decided to give it a whirl...now I'm only annoyed with myself for waiting so long. It has so many things I enjoy: a settle-a-debt type bargain, characters I could invest in, well developed intimate scenes, and some lite-kink (bondage and spanking). I also really liked the writing and pacing. I look forward to reading more from Moran!

Spectacular. Nicholas March is called the Winter Wolf for his cold heart and his pursuit of pleasure with the ladies of the ton. Grace Willsdown just wants a quiet life with her horses and her breeding stable. The heat between these two has the pages of this book going up in flames. Secrets, misunderstandings, friends, enemies and themselves try to keep them apart but love will finally tame the both. Can't recommend enough. 10 stars.

December 30, 2018Sample read. Instant mutual lust followed by him bedding and discarding OW. Dialogue not captivating enough to lure me in. Writing style a bit too overt for my taste. Sounds already like erotic fiction more than HR.

This book won’t be for everyone so take my review with a grain of salt. I laughed, cried and blushed throughout this book. I loved the tension, the chemistry and PERSONALITY (I know, in this economy?) and it was a great. The only reason it isn’t a five star was (CW: dubious consent, animal death) the amount of times it felt like he was forcing her against her will. Like I get dominance and power dynamics and that he is cold as ice, but damn, make me like him a little more please. I also did not like her just taking the abuse. I get that he needed to have someone not give up on him but her saying she will take anything he will give makes me so sad. YOU DESERVE BETTER. I both love that unconditional love in a FICTIONAL novel but if that was real life that is depressing and overly dependent on someone else for your own happiness is not healthy. Her stallion dying was unnecessary and made me cry and cuddle my cats. I want Celia to be happy. I hope to read her story next.

This book got so boring as it went. Everything was clear to the reader. The characters just needed to catch up. I dont know what time period this was, but I had to read it like it was the 1920s. Other than horses for transportation and sending letters, no one's actual manner of living was historical/Victorian or whatever. So, the "world-building" failed for me. I actually got tired of reading about the main characters conversations and having sex repeatedly.

In the mood for the "heroine exchanges X amount of nights in exchange for home/family/debt reasons" trope? The Untamed Duke does a pretty good job with this plotline. Similar to Taming Ivy, it's a mixed bag but unlike Taming Ivy, its powerful moments transcend its weaknesses.
Grace Willsdown is first discovered by Nicholas March, Sebastien's former close friend, in a pretend dead faint to escape the attentions of Tristan Buchanan at a country party. Cue insta-lust. This early part of the story didn't grab me, mostly because the banter wasn't very exciting. Also, I think this is when we learn that Nicholas writes poems. Unfortunately, the reader gets to read some of these poems because they make up the epigraph to each chapter. The poems tarnish his winter wolf vibe. It is a relief that the whole journaling hobby gets dropped in the end. Like, I was seriously worried it was going to be major plot device in how his character develops. Anyways.
After Grace discovers there is an encumbrance on her ancestral home, Bellmar Abby, to Nicholas, she negotiates to spend five nights with him in exchange for Bellmar Abby. From here on out, The Untamed Duke is a pretty steamy story that got me hooked. Taming Ivy was also steamy but the H+H and the plot didn't pull it through to the finish line. Nicholas and Grace become great together, unlike Sebastien and Ivy. Both Nicholas and Sebastien are nasty to the heroines and engage in at least one possessive monologue that is absolutely great to read, but Sebastien is truly disrespectful to Ivy in public and in private. Nicholas' bark is worse than his bite, and you see that when he runs into a burning stable to rescue Grace's prized horses, fights anyone that slanders Grace's name or when Nicholas gives Bellmar Abby to Grace to let her go. And although Grace suffers from that same "I love him, I can fix him, he can treat me like garbage but I'll still be his punching bag" BS, she does have more of a backbone to her.
The confrontation between Nicholas and Sebastien is so fun to read. Moran was building up to the two hotheaded heroes meeting together, and it was a hilariously awkward and tense scene. The truth behind Nicholas and Sebastien's friendship breakup is also revealed, and it is a good secret.
The next story in the Taming series will be about Viscount Tristan Buchanan and based on the clues dropped by the author, it should be with his childhood friend, Lady Violet. Excited to read it when it comes out!

This early part of the story didn't grab me, mostly because the banter wasn't very exciting. Also, I think this is when we learn that Nicholas writes poems. Unfortunately, the reader gets to read some of these poems because they make up the epigraph to each chapter. The poems tarnish his winter wolf vibe. It is a relief that the whole journaling hobby gets dropped in the end. Like, I was seriously worried it was going to be major plot device in how his character develops. Anyways.
After Grace discovers there is an encumbrance on her ancestral home, Bellmar Abby, to Nicholas, she negotiates to spend five nights with him in exchange for Bellmar Abby. From here on out, The Untamed Duke is a pretty steamy story that got me hooked. Taming Ivy was also steamy but the H+H and the plot didn't pull it through to the finish line. Nicholas and Grace become great together, unlike Sebastien and Ivy. Both Nicholas and Sebastien are nasty to the heroines and engage in at least one possessive monologue that is absolutely great to read, but Sebastien is truly disrespectful to Ivy in public and in private. Nicholas' bark is worse than his bite, and you see that when he runs into a burning stable to rescue Grace's prized horses, fights anyone that slanders Grace's name or when Nicholas gives Bellmar Abby to Grace to let her go. And although Grace suffers from that same "I love him, I can fix him, he can treat me like garbage but I'll still be his punching bag" BS, she does have more of a backbone to her.
The confrontation between Nicholas and Sebastien is so fun to read. Moran was building up to the two hotheaded heroes meeting together, and it was a hilariously awkward and tense scene. The truth behind Nicholas and Sebastien's friendship breakup is also revealed, and it is a good secret.
The next story in the Taming series will be about Viscount Tristan Buchanan and based on the clues dropped by the author, it should be with his childhood friend, Lady Violet. Excited to read it when it comes out!

I really enjoyed this dark, somewhat menacing, hero. This book will be added to my anti-hero shelf. I also really like the heroine - not whiny, not shrewish, but still has spirit.
There is a phrase that was used often by a psychologist I really like - unconditional regard. The heroine has this and it makes all the difference. I loved how this concept was written into this story.
I am not the best at identifying content warnings but one for dub-con is probably necessary.
As with the other books in the series there are some *significant* problems concerning the use of titles in this book. Normally I struggle to get past this issue. Even something as simple as addressing a Duke as my lord grates on my nerves. BUT - the story itself was worth experiencing the nails chalkboard feeling the misuse of titles and address brought about. I do hope that the author gets an editor to fix this for her.

DNFd at 30 percent. I just coudn't get past the fact that she kept calling him "My Lord, "even though he was a Duke, and she was an Earl's daughter and should have known these things, She wasn't his friend or anything for her to do this in jest. It was just weird. I also couldn't believe she just offered him 5 nights with her in return for her estate. I mean I think I could have gone with it if he had proposed this, but a virgin aristocratic girl proposing this?!

Perfection. The hero is brooding and tortured, he’s a real rake who doesn’t want to love and has a scandalous behavior. He becomes obsessed by the heroine and offers to help her if she will be his mistress but falls in love with her. I loved this hero, he was really bad in the beginning but he had a awful childhood so we understand why he can’t think to love or be loved. The heroine was strong and feisty, a true force of nature, and she never gave up on him, so eventually we see his capitulation, total and great, and very very pleasant for the reader. Excellent reading.

Couldn’t put it down !!!
I can’t say enough how much I loved this book! April Moran is a genius author... she weaves a story that flows and makes you feel all the emotion as if you are witnessing the story unfold in real person! Steamy , sensual , smart and utterly romantic! I am thrilled that she is writing a 3rd story in this series and I was hoping it would be Tristen !!! :)

Victorian England?
A premise of this story: if a late Duke was a "monster"
so must his son behave this way. Sorry, this did not
justify the actions of new Duke, Nicholas. Nick's sire,
a sadist, beat Nick as a child, with/ without provocation,
ditto for verbal abuse. Nick behaved toward sweet & naïve
Grace in an oppressive & unyielding manner. He wanted
everything his way and yesterday. Grace mostly placated
him and wanted to 'save' him. Kudos to Nick on his 'good
turn' RE the horses. But Nick's negativity negated any
sexiness he projected/ shared.
Grace should have used the 'catch and release' method and
thrown this fish (Nick) back in the pond.

This book was a suggestion by a reader from Tessa Dare Facebook group, she told this one should please those who like Tessa writing.
And I can only agree.
Of course, neither the plot nor the writing style is similar but it contains the perfect ingredients for me with a strong willing woman, a damaged hero very much on the alpha side but also who has a puppy side, a great sense of humor, very few angsty moments, steamy naughty scenes but never dirty, amazing love’s declarations and a sweet epilogue.
From the opening scene to the very last word, I was sucked in Grace and Nicholas story.
For such a young woman, Grace is a very strong willed one, she lets nobody walk on her nor decide for herself. She is the only master of her life and will accept nothing less.
« “I’m bringing you those things you left behind.” Grace chewed her bottom lip, and Nicholas wanted his own teeth raking across that plump bit of flesh. “Your horse, your books, and my heart.” »
Nicholas is a wounded creature, like them he lashes out his pain and draws his claws afraid to be hurt again, he has built an icy facade and frozen walls around himself, to hide his inner scars. But despite everything, there is still a spark of hope in his heart, why probably he is touched by Grace’s personality, she smoothes his sorrows and erases his nightmares.
« It went far beyond this momentary pleasure. She soothed the wildness inside him. Tamed his demons and the monsters living within his nightmares. A touch of her hand, a sweet word from her lips, and he was entranced. Destroyed. Redeemed. »
I do adored their banters, it is a battle of wills and wits. Even if their encounters turn from light to much deeper, Grace keeps her brain on leash and surprises at every turn Nicholas. And while he fights his attraction to Grace, he is also a willing participant in their interactions as she rises his interest.
« Nicholas swallowed a growl of amused frustration. The way her chin rose indicated she enjoyed their sparring, which incinerated any intention he possessed of keeping his distance. Their back and forth intrigued him... and only made him want her more. »
Even it is more a closed-door story, this amazing main couple is surrounded by great supporting characters, which ever they want to bring them together or tear them apart.
And as a final bonus point, there are the short poems at each chapter opening like some haikus, thoughts of Nicholas which evolve along his story with Grace.

I am a historical romance story lover. My favorite movie ever is Pride and Prejudice. My favorite series ever is the Outlander books by Diana Gabaldon. And my favorite book ever is Ride the Wind by Lucia St. Clair. All historical romances.
So, while I’m not an expert in all things historical, I do feel that I can say I’m truly a fan. And I also feel that I can say, without a shadow of a doubt, that April Moran’s sophomore release, The Untamed Duke, is by far, one of the best historical romances I’ve read in a very long time.
April has a gift when it comes to creating sentences that literally transport you to another time. I could smell the flowers on trellises, hear petticoats under skirts swishing, horses hooves as they galloped over cobblestones, and of course, felt every wrenching moment our heroine, Grace, fell in love.
This is a story to read, read again, and maybe even a third time because it’s that beautifully told. A story for the ages that will be forever treasured in my heart, and hopefully in yours. April has written a ten star story. If you were wondering if you should grab this, wonder no more. It's AMAZING.

There were inconsistencies in this book and it was hard to connect with the leads. There were a lot more words than I deemed necessary and there was little connection between Nicholas and Grace though we're told of it. In some cases their sexual encounters went on for two chapters, but it was tediously recounted. I skimmed the second half and skipped the sex scenes just to get to the end. The best part of the book is the handsome man on the cover.

This is my second romance novel by this author. I am so very glad whoever posted these books as must read on Facebook. They are great romance with hot sizzling passion. Now on to book three.

This book, goodness this book is one of the best I think I have ever read that I cannot get out of my head. The hero is a full blown gorgeous, sad, full of angst, character who is brought to ground by an unassuming, tomboy, horse loving, no respecter of persons heroine. She comes on the scene in a fainting spell and he walks into the scene and you know from the minute he makes an appearance that this is not just your average hero. He has his nose in the air and expects her to address him in the manner in which he is accustomed, not happening with her. It has humor, lust, and a beautiful story line with just a little bit of bad blood between the hero and the heroines family.
Wonderful read, I will probably read it many more times and may even ask to have it placed with me in my forever home when I leave this world. There will be more books in there as well, may not be enough room for me. Absolutely loved it and I think you will too!

April Moran has surpassed her stellar debut novel, TAMING IVY, with her latest, THE UNTAMED DUKE. After the devastating loss of her parents, Grace is about to lose everything else she holds dear. She strikes a bargain with a devilish duke. She will give him five nights pleasure in exchange for her home and precious horses. Nicholas has everything and believes he deserves nothing, but he’ll gladly hand over her land, her house, and her breeding stock for five nights with Grace. Moran’s characters are drawn beautifully one easily falls deeply into their emotional turmoil. She creates a world rich in sensory and historical detail. And her storytelling is on par with Tessa Dare and Sarah Maclean. Five stars.
