Snow Spark Saga #4

Count The Rain

Rate this book
Sixteen-year-old professional outlaw, Rags, never wanted to help save the world. But with the death of Hyperion and the salvation of the Kingdom at hand, she finds her newfound freedom to be more than she’s prepared for. That is, until a mysterious assassin targets her and the new leader of the Kingdom, Henrick Oreson, uttering two words: “Praise Antiquity.”

A ghost from the Kingdom’s past, Antiquity, poses a new threat. It’s rumored to be more advanced and is determined to take over in Hyperion’s stead. Forced to leave her family behind once again, Rags flees to Zephyr to protect them and the upcoming Council meeting that could make or break the Kingdom’s future. But with Antiquity coming for them, there are only two choices: go to the front lines and fight, or let the fragile new Kingdom fall.

Together with Henrick, new second-in-command Colton Caelan Fieldson, and Supporter leader Meridian, Rags must find a way to cripple Antiquity and prevent Zephyr from falling into the wrong hands. It won’t be easy when Antiquity has a weapon that could end the Kingdom in a single night. She’ll have to call upon everything she knows and the alliances she’s made to answer the one question that could mean the downfall of everything she’s fought for: are the needs of the many worth those of the few? Her choice will determine if the new Kingdom rises from the ashes… or returns to them.

Kathryn Lee Martin, known as 'Ryn' by friends and colleagues, spends her days saddling up the literary horse and hitting the “what if” trails on a quest to tell the outlaws’ and underdogs’ stories. Not one to shy away from the darker side of stories for the older young adult audience, her works often explore impossible odds and dire futures, falling into a fusion of steampunk, epic fantasy, time travel, and post-apocalyptic science fiction. Putting her unfortunate characters in situations where faith and fighting often go hand in hand, she’s not afraid to make things difficult for them and when she’s not corrupting society on paper, she’s usually leading the rebellion to save it.

Important Personal 2021 Update from me

I'm still not actively reviewing books at the moment due to new projects and other writing commitments. I am actively reading books now more than ever, but I don’t have the time to post in-depth reviews unless it’s something I’m wildly passionate about or it falls in a timeframe I can realistically write one to do it justice.

Also, because I get a lot of personal messages about this, I am not offering copies of my now out-of-print published books in exchange for reviews. I opted not to renew the contract with the small press that published it at the end of 2020 and there are no plans to rerelease any of the 4 books in the Snow Spark Saga. They are no longer available and are officially out-of-print. Sorry, but it was a career move I needed to make to allow my current and far higher-quality fantasy steampunk projects to take priority and my full attention.

Thank you for understanding.

Review: I had to DNF this book. There were some more plot points and circular writing and while I was interested in the story, I felt like I knew what the ending was going to be for a very long time in this series and skipping ahead in the book I found myself right. I just couldn’t enjoy the books anymore.

Verdict: It was an okay series, but it had some issues and ultimately I wasn’t happy reading it.

Despite the flaws in this book, I enjoyed it, mainly because it has a good “feel” to it. The characters and the physical and social setting blend together to give a realistic gestalt that pulls you into the story. Which is a good thing, because this author is in need of all sorts of editing.

For example, editors often comment that a book “starts too early.” In this case, the book starts, and we get a third of the way through before the story starts. There is too much talking in the opening chapters. The same thing said several times, usually rehashing things that happened in the opening book of the series.

Also, the rough writing style is in need of a good polish. Sentence structure is sometimes too complicated. “Alright” is acceptable to many people instead of “all right,” but every author should learn the difference between “laid” and “lay,” especially when writing in the present tense.

Oh, yeah, and there’s too much rain. Yes, I know it’s in the title, but there’s a limit to how much of any setting element we want to be inundated with.

Other than that, this novel has great world-building, sympathetic and interesting characters and plenty of action.

Recommended for fans of post-apocalyptic, semi-steampunk writing.

Rags is 16 and a professional outlaw. Following the death of Hyperion and with the salvation of the Kingdom in progress she finds new freedom unexpected. A ghost from the past called Antiquity surfaces in the form of an assassin targeting her and the new leader Henrick Oreson. She is forced to flee her family (again) and goes to Zephyr in order to protect them and then the upcoming council meeting she has a choice - go to the front lines and fight or let the Kingdom fall. Can Rags work with Henrick and second in command Colton Caelan Fieldson and make the right choices to cripple Antiquity and save the Kingdom?

This is a very detailed saga that needs you to read the earlier books in the series in order to fully understand the story and characters involved in it. I'm not sure I fully understood some of the implications of the events in the story nor the relationships between the characters although I did get a sense of them. It was a generally enjoyable story and I could understand what was happening although not necessarily why. If you have read the other books this would be a very enjoyable story.

No shortage of trouble and turmoil for our characters as the final book wraps up the series. Great closure that fills in the story of why the post apocalyptic world is the way it is. These stories will stick with me. Great job to the author on this series.
