Jeff Bezos: A man for all purchasing reasons

Jeff Bezos: Tech Entrepreneur and Businessman” is a well-written, well-researched, and richly illustrated treatment of the person who is currently the richest man in the world. The book is divided into nine chapters: Bezos in His Prime [no pun intended; this chapter deals with his childhood]; Studying at Princeton University; In the Working World [finance]; Venturing Out on His Own; Early Ideas and Growth; From Books to Everything; the Dot-com Bust; Boom After the Bust; Amazon Grows and Grows; Amazon and Beyond. It also includes sections on Chronology (timeline), Chapter Notes, Glossary, and Further Reading.

Interesting quotes abound in the book. Some examples: From his grandfather —“Jeff, one day you’ll understand that it’s harder to be kind than clever.” JB to Princeton grads — “Will you be a cynic, or will you be a builder? Will you be clever at the expense of others, or will you be kind? In the end, we are our choices. Build yourself a great story.” JB — “The wake-up call was finding this startling statistic that web usage in the spring of 1994 was growing at 2,300 percent a year. … ‘What kind of business plan might make sense in the context of that growth?’” Warren Buffett: [Jeff Bezos is] “the most remarkable business person of our age.”

The author ends the book with a summary section on how Bezos is changing the world. He more or less sums up Bezos’ success with the comment (granting that Bezos was a brainy kid and a Wall Street whiz): “But it is his ability to take risks, to trust his instincts, to work hard, and to always be searching for the next territory to explore that has set him apart.”

Bottom-line, as a fellow author, I highly recommend this enlightening book on one of the most prominent persons of our age.

Great book about Jeff Bezos in his 20s. It's very evident that he was going to be very successful regardless of whatever he did! Though, a chain of events culminated into the Amazon opportunity (e.g. a head hunter reaching out to him for a role at DeShaw, despite Jeff requesting to move out of finance, and from that came market research on potential opportunities on the internet).
