Leadership without Ego: How to stop managing and start leading

Rate this book
If you take a chain, pile it up and then push it, what direction will it go? Nowhere you can predict and not very far. If you take it by the end and pull it, which way will it go? It will follow you. Leadership is not about what sets you apart from those you lead―it’s about what binds you together. It is not about controlling others―it’s about trusting others. It’s not about your achievements―it’s about unleashing your team’s greatness. In short, leadership really isn’t about you―it’s about your people. Take Bob Davids, co-author of this book and successful leader of six businesses in fields as diverse as engineering and winemaking. His achievements often came thanks to being able to refrain from acting when others might have found intervening irresistible. By trusting his employees to be better than him in their area of responsibility and letting them act, Bob unleashed the human greatness that no one else―including employees themselves―suspected. Yet to lead without acting does not mean doing nothing. It means creating conditions in which things happen by themselves. Leadership Without Ego is about a transformation of the concept of leadership in the past two a change of beliefs about how best to lead, along with radically different leadership practices. The ideas in this book have already changed the fortunes of hundreds of businesses and the lives of tens of thousands of employees. They can do the same for your business, your people―and you.

Bob Davids, the primary brain behind this trilogy of authorship, was and is a client of mine. For 20 years I have watched him accurately perform exactly as expressed in this book. I was and hopefully will continue to be a provider of my skills for him while I remain a student of his way of leading from behind.
The unusual manner of expression found in this book is a perfect match for Bob's remarkable way of leading others. It is different, effective and once you start, you will find no reason for not reading to the end.
Having watched how he deals with other people as well as with me. I can easily say that this has been a continuing learning process. In fact, I have often told others, jokingly, that I sometimes felt like I should deliver my goods and pay him for the amazing things I learned in the process. It goes far beyond just doing my "thing" and bumps up against realizing that I have gained beyond any simple or easy explanation. One does not work for him as much as you do "with" him. It's truly amazing!
If you have read this review up to here, that implies a sincere interest in the subject matter. Regardless of your position in life and in business, you will gain something, likely a lot in reading this book. Another thing I learned by working with Bob, is that a leader stops leading from in front and moves to the back when enough has been said. I'll show what I have learned by ...............
