Dannika Dark! I have followed this author from the beginning and the books just get better and better. I love her writing style. With every book she brings more to the table.
I'm not going to go into detail with this review so if you haven't started reading this series then start.
Just a few tidbits though.... Raven and Christian are hilarious with their banter. I love the witty comebacks that they are throwing at each other throughout the book. Their chemistry, ooh la la! Enough said, I think.
This book could not have been better but I expect the next will supersede this one. Buy it and if you haven't started the series then buy the first book. Definitely read them in order or you will miss out.

I tried to make this one last, but oh man Blackout was so intense, with developments surrounding Christian and Raven's memory wipe. It all started out so nicely with some toe curling moments before the city suffers a massive blackout and things turn deadly. Assassins, plots against the higher authority and Christian as a member of the clergy..oh lordy.

Dannika Dark continues to amaze me, torture me and further endear me to the motley crew of misfit breed who make up the Keystone organization. A new character, Raven's maker and secrets made for an explosive storyline.

Confession, I adore Christian. Sure he is flawed and has made some serious mistakes, but dang it the man has owned my heart since the Mageri series. He hasn't given up, despite Raven's memory loss and I swooned at his efforts. Their chemistry is sizzling, and the way he protects her could be he downfall.

Raven has had a rough life and has finally found a home within the walls of Keystone. As a member of the team she is sharp, intuitive and someone I'd want covering me... but when it comes to her personal life. Ugh! Her relationship with her creator makes me nuts and I wish she had a little more faith in Christian.

The intense storyline had me holding my breath and biting my nails. Dark really has me emotionally invested in these characters, and I like that with each novel, we learn more about different team members and their personalities. Raven seeks help from two sources and both have chain reactions. I will let you decide if it was good or not.

Nicole Poole continues to narrate. She is the jelly in Dark's peanut butter sandwich. Her voices, pacing and ability to capture the emotions of scenes was music to my ears.

I was hoping for resolution after a surprise turn of events..but alas Dark left us hanging. Now I am left waiting once again for the next Crossbreed audio. I cannot stand the wait. Why didn't I savor this longer? This review was originally posted at Caffeinated Reviewer

Well stink! I was SO looking forward to this book! This series has risen to the very top of my all-time favorite lists. Unfortunately, this installment just doesn’t have the depth of character, the riveting heart-stopping action or the I-can’t-put-it-down aspect every previous book has had.

In fact, 90% is just kind of... boring! There was hardly an action scene in it and the ones that were there were very lack-luster. It read much more like a regular mystery. Now I have nothing against mysteries and even enjoy them from time to time but that’s not how this series has been set up or played out. I expected more suspense and action.

The biggest disappointment, however, was in the relationship area. As I have said in previous reviews, that is the strength and the very heart of this series. It is why I keep coming back and why I love it above so many other urban fantasy offerings. This broken group of people and how they love, work and support each other gives it the depth and emotion that few others can match. And, while we do see some of that in the Shepherd storyline (my very favorite part of the book) it is mostly absent in the Raven/Christian plot-line.

I just can’t figure out why the author would take a relationship that is scorching hot with chemistry, allow us to watch it grow into a strong and lasting love, then pull the rug completely out from under our feet by back-tracking. The entire storyline stalled because of it. Instead of developing and deepening, we go 10 steps back and... well, just stay suspended. Yes, the cliffhanger ending does make us want to find out what happens next but at what cost? That incredible chemistry that made us love Raven and Christian is destroyed. And, rather than leave them on good footing before the last bombshell hits, we are left with nothing between them AND another hit. How long before we just don’t care anymore?

A Suspense Filled & Edge of the Seat Read!! 😳🔥⚔

Well, I took my time reading 'Blackout' as I wanted to savour it and I'm so glad I did!! 😀

Members of the Higher Authority are being murdered in this installment. Keystone are not asked to investigate but are tasked with identifying one of the victims 😳 Victor tasks Christian & Raven with this job. It's tricky, sensitive & political - You have to wonder what their Leader was thinking sending these two 🤔 They're both as subtle as charging Rhinos in a house made of crystal 😂 They do get the job done though!🔨👍

We spend much more time with certain members of Keystone in 'Blackout'. I absolutely loved that about this book 😍 We see them beginning to open up to each other at different times and actually divulging some past secrets, which is touching & endearing in every instance 💜 Although much of the story feels like it's mostly just set with these specific 5-6 characters, it somehow managed to keep me guzzling coffee like a junky & almost constantly feeling on edge!! 😳 Raven & Christian continue with the slow pace she requested until - Well until .... 😭😭

People from past books, in this series, start to rear their heads again on & off throughout 😱😠 The 'Blackout' of the title almost becomes a character in its own right, It is that integral to this story!! I think the Author was so artful in her placement of the bouts of action throughout this book, You never quite know when it will explode, yet again, to the forefront of the storyline ... The suspense was so stressful - I loved it 😀😍

There are new allies made & old enemies rediscovered, Trust is gained & some then broken, Love may be found but then it's brutally slain. Change seems to be a foot in the Keystone Compound.
I just hope us readers survive it all, because after parts of this book, I just don't know how much more my poor heart can take!!😳💔 This was an excellent read. I loved how the suspenseful plot was interwoven with the personal interactions. And can I just say .. Damn, Dannika Dark writes 'steamy' so well 🔥🔥🔥

So in summary: it's full of feels, death, treachery, heat, heartbreak & so much suspense and intensity you'll chew your finger nails off. Yep, 5 Stars from me 🌟

What the fecking hell kinda shite faced ending was that Dannika

NOT COOL

I have been cheated. Cheated I tell you!!

Firstly you make me fall MORE in love with Christian by having him be so romantic and stuff.

Then you give me one hell of a back alley shag

Then you forget to write Christian and Raven together again for the next 70%

Then you nearly make me cry Hunter- bless his wee cotton socks

Then I get some crap weak as hell reasons for Raven to pull away from Christian AGAIN

I'm 5 books in I deserve better than this!

The only way that ending could have been worse is if we had another memory wipe!

If that artwork at the end hadn't set me knickers on fire then we'd be looking at a 3 here

This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

3.5 Somewhat disappointed stars

I read Blackout in the audio version. I think Nicole Poole’s voice is a bit too mature for the Raven character, but she read well and I like her character voice transitions, so I rather have that.

I knew going into this book I wouldn’t get too much Raven and Christian saga. I mean, it’s a slow burn series. I hadn’t read the last book in some time so I kind of forgot a few elements but after a few hours I felt like I was somewhat caught up.

Raven and Christian are at a hard point in the plot relationship. They are together but sort of. There’s always going to be obstacles right? Her memories are wiped clean and Christian is doing the best he can do.

That isn’t the main story and that is fine.

A HUGE part of the book was about Sheppard and his son. As much as I like a single daddy book. It was a HUGE Debbie downer for me. The ENTIRE book is about how much Sheppard can’t keep / take his son. Gah, the author goes into detail in how it won’t work out.

I hated that. It all came down to that it was better for his son to stay with Patrick, even though Patrick is clearly emotionally abusing the boy.

REALLY?!!!!! That was just hard for me to stomach and read.

I didn’t like the rational that went into this plot. I didn’t like the way the team tried to work out issues and complained on silly stuff.

I usually like getting sucked up into side plots, but I was annoyed with everyone and how they wanted to treat the whole boy / emotionally abused situation.

Then towards the end of the book it goes back to Raven and Christian. Like you went through the ENTIRE book just to get to the last 30 mins of the juicy part. REALLY?!!!

I felt like the author was trying really hard to CATCH you in that hook. Like she wrote a mild and kind of boring book to only HOOK you in the last paragraph.

No thanks.

I need a break from the series. I don’t like being dirty like that.

While I initially enjoyed this series.. it seems as more books are written it has stalled to nothing. There is barely progression of a plot, and barely any questions are answered. Although we did find out about ravens maker/creator (in book 4). The other characters still have no backgrounds and are uninteresting to read, I don't know nor do I care about Gem, Blue, Wyatt, etc. because it seems like they are after-thoughts of the series with too much dialogue thrown in... you don't feel connected to them. Shep's storyline was the only redeeming scenario and even that was shoved in randomly.

The one shining light of this series would be the chemistry Christian and Raven have but yet it seems 5 books in we are back at the beginning....or with the cliff hanger possibly further than that if possible.
I love reading series books but it seems like the author is trying to accomplish too much, maybe focus on Christian and Raven then develop the other characters in different series... but if you are going to write a romance/fantasy world at least make it PROGRESS, I feel like this author is just making me spend money on each book to go nowhere... I usually keep reading series because I've committed but after this installment I don't even know if I care to finish it.

Exceptional!

Riveting, explosive, full of twists, turns, and complete surprises, Blackout delivers the full impact of the Crossbreed series in a single book.

This book showcases the incredible story-weaving of Dannika Dark in all its raw glory and reaffirmed why I am a fan for life. Her world building and periodic soulful musings from characters are pretty unparalleled and spectacular.

Obviously, you need to read the previous books in the series. And since its basically perfection on pages thats a joyous task.

Blackout is Dannika Dark’s latest in her Crossbreed series about a paranormal group that does work for an organization called Keystone that work for the Breed higher authority. They are tasked with anything regulators, otherwise known as Breed police, either can’t or won’t do when supernatural beings cause major problems or messes. They live in the city of Cognito, the place that attracts supes like bees are attracted to honey. Humans know nothing about the Breed world for the most part.

This time Dark takes heroine, Raven(hybrid vampire/mage) and her partner(vampire) and hero, Christian on the hunt for whoever is murdering members of the Breed higher authority. The author introduces the case in a surprising way, thereby pulling me into the book immediately as is Dark’s usual. It’s also not long before other members of Keystone enter the story. I am so loving all the characters that have been fleshed out more and more with each book. This time around we learn a lot more about Gem, a rollerskating(adult) Mage, Nico an ancient, blind mage that can see energy, and even more about Shepherd, a sensor, and his secret son. Of course, all my other favorites(and they are all favorites) are there as well.

As if the murders aren’t bad enough, a blackout happens during a romantic Valentine’s tryst between Raven and Christian, leaving them stuck far away from their home and without a vehicle or phone. The chemistry between Raven and Christian is still there in a major way, however after Raven’s mind was wiped previously, she can’t remember falling for Christian in the first place. That doesn’t stop them from having a smoldering hot time during their date. The blackout ruins the rest of the date to say the least. Imagine navigating a city about the size of New York City in the dark. During looting, burning and all manner of people and/or Breed being delinquents, murder and mayhem ensues. And that’s all I am telling about the actual events.

My favorite thing about this series is the relationship between Raven and Christian. Both of them have snark for days and the banter is so much fun between them. As is their major chemistry together! I also love the relationships that have been formed between all the members of the organization. They all live in a castle type structure on the outskirts of Cognito and since some of the group are immortals or long lived, this fits with some of their early lives. They are also forbidden to form romantic relationships, leaving Raven and Christian to sneak around. I am really hoping for another relationship to form and we might? have started one in this book. If not, let’s just say I am hoping for one.

Dark’s Breed world continues to amaze me with each book. She has featured it in all of her three series now and I hope that continues. One thing though. She has never written a cliffhanger in all her books so this one came out of left field for me. It was done in the epilogue and is setting up the next book so that made it a bit better. But still-I’m not a fan of them. I wasn’t as happy with the ending of this book as I usually am either, and it wasn’t just the cliffhanger. Have to be honest here. That being said, it was still very well written, with fantastic characters and I loved it-as usual.

Narration? Nicole Poole is the queen of accents and breathing life into both male and female voices while making each one have their own distinctive tone and personality. I’ve really not found many female narrators that compare and I listen to a lot of different narrators. Of course, I have other favorite female narrators, it’s just that I have a special place in my heart for Poole. To me she’s just a winner anytime she narrates a Dark book. 5 Stars!

I’m literally chomping at the bit for the next book in this series and I highly recommend this and all of Dark’s series to adult paranormal/urban fantasy readers that like romance as well. 4.5 stars

This book was bittersweet in the best way possible! Every time I thought I knew what to expect I had the pleasure of having the rug pulled out from under me. Don't get me wrong, I was loving every minute of it! I also adored how well interlaced the storylines are. There are quite a few small tidbits that were presented in past books that are just now growing into complex plot points. I can't wait to see where this goes!

I don't know how this author does it but she's succeeded in making me care about every single main character in the Keystone group. I'm too invested in everyone's happily ever after and I don't know what to do with myself until that happens.

Just when I thought things were going so well with Christian and Raven things went 50 steps back in the span of one conversation. Why can't they be happy and stay happy? Christian has proven time and time again that he actually cares about Raven in more than a fling kind of way. Raven reciprocates his feelings, but they're doomed to be apart. I will riot. They need a happily ever after. And none of this "all in good time" BS.

I jokingly predicted the Patrick twist at 1 am while I was listening to the audio book and slightly delirious. I was so proud of myself for that one! I loved the solution Shepherd's dilemma came to though. It was sweet and imperfect. Just like the Keystone group/family.

Had I known the epilogue would drop that bomb I would have probably held off on reading it until the next book released. Things were bad until then between Raven and Christian, but I can imagine that thanks to that twist it's going to get much worse before it gets better.

The Audio Book:

I have nothing but amazing things to say about the narration! Nicole Poole continues to do a fantastic job. The number of different accents and tones (both male and female) she can realistically do is mind-blowing!

This is the 5th book in the series and honestly may be one of my favorite! You do need to read them in order as the story line continues book to book. Once you know that, sit back and enjoy. The author brings to life an interesting set of characters that leave you wanting more on each one. I would be thrilled if each member of Keystone got their own HEA. But, we are at the mercy of the author on this so I agree to go with the flow.

No spoilers but YES!!! YES!! I did the happy dance as the story resolved. Freakin' Patrick! Thank God for that outcome!! I cannot wait to see more of that twist unfold. Should shake up the Keystone mansion a bit.

As for the rest of the story. Still lots of action and violence. The tit for tat among the team also makes for some lighter moments in the story. Loved the interactions with Raven and Christian alone! So perfect for each other, if they could just get past all the emotional barriers. The ending may throw a wrench in those plans. It's a bit of a cliffy so plan ahead. No resolve until book 6 comes out.

Great Read!

Holy freaking cow! Just when I think Dannika can't tug at our hearts or make us laugh out loud more... she does it again! The fifth installment in the Crossbreed series, BLACKOUT does not disappoint!

BLACKOUT is filled with action, mystery, laughs, sexiness and moments that will have you doing the "ugly cry". Then when you're done.... you just want to know 1.) when the next title releases and 2.) how you're supposed to listen/read another book now? Every single time I finish one of Dannika's books, I need time ... to recoup!

Oh and Nicole!! Again, a stellar performance. Providing each of the characters with their own unique voices/tones! When a book is narrated by Nicole, its like getting a full cast!!

If you haven't listened/read the series, its a must! Heck, all of Dannika's books are must have!

Not my favorite of the series

There were some interesting things about it and I'm glad it worked out with Patrick, although you could argue it was a simple resolution. Didn't care how things ended up with Raven and Christian. Those 2 can't get their stuff together. It needs a resolution soon one way or another. I'm not as excited about the next book unfortunately.

Sigh...

Why oh why do I let Dannika do this to me? I dive headfirst into the new book and I finish it in no time flat then I’m left wanting more and more. I seriously can’t recommend this author and this series enough. I’ve been in love with all of Dannika Dark’s characters since my first of her books and this series I have to admit is my favorite yet. If you like urban fantasy with a little romance on the side then pick up book one in this series and then pick up book two then book three and so on. Devour them all in one sitting and be left waiting for more like me. Misery loves company after all ;)

I received this book for free from Tantor Audio in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.I thought I would give myself a few days to calm down before I wrote this review. I'm still a little sore about the ending but I thought I could at least talk about the rest of the story.

Originally the Keystone crew is working a case involving deaths of some higher authority members, but when the city is suddenly claimed by a blackout, the job turns into one of protecting those remaining higher authority. The problem is protecting them from the craziness going on due to the blackout, as well as the murderer who seems to have it out for some members.

Blackout also has us dealing with Shepherd's indecisions as well as the relationship dilemma with Raven and Christian. You really get intense feelings for Shepherd as he deals with his conflicts. He has very few roads open to him and each one has painful consequences. Gem also has a tragedy she must deal with. It feels like everyone in Keystone has some personal demons they must defeat.

I love Raven and her independence. She knows she must follow Keystone's rules, but she also has a mind of her own. Raven will act when she needs to when she feels she is right. Granted, not all of her theories are correct, nor her actions, but her heart is in the right place. She is fighting for what she feels is right and that is respectable. I absolutely loved her interactions with Christian. Their banter back and forth brought a lot of laughs. You would believe that they hold nothing back. The big snag in this relationship is that damn creator of hers. Houdini makes me want to scream with his smart ass attitude. He acts like he controls everything going on around him, especially how Raven's life goes. He frustrates me to no end! Sure enough, he sneaks himself in there to cause just enough chaos to stick his nose in Raven and Christian's relationship.

The action and adventure in Blackout was so much fun. It's a race against time and following Raven as she follows leads and fights when she needs to gets the heart pumping. She is just an awesome all around character. The relationships within Keystone also are cause for some laughs. They claim to not be the closest of people, but their actions and banter say otherwise. They are great together and just cause a lot of laughs. I love Wyatt and his reactions to dead bodies!

So needless to say, all around, I thought Blackout was an amazing installment to the Crossbreed series. Until we get to the end. I hate cliffhangers, and I feel like this what we are left with here. Despite my outrage at the actions of Raven and Christian, the little wrinkle that pops up at the end had me scratching my head and wondering how much worse things are going to get. I sure hope the next book is on it's way out because I'm going to go insane until I see some things settled here. I'm still peeved at how this ended and I finished a couple of days ago. This is going to stick with me for sure. My emotions are riding high!

I can't say enough how much the audio impresses me. I can't imagine reading this series without Nicole Poole narrating. Poole brings out the personalities in all the characters that just has this series alive for me. I definitely recommend the audio for anyone wanting to start this series. However, I do want to own the paperbacks just because I love the covers. One of these days I'll catch a good sale or get a great gift card and will snatch them up!This review was originally posted on Rantings of a Reading Addict

The last chapter is what elevated this book from a 2 star to a 3 star read for me, and that makes me sad. I have LOVED this series up until this book. Aside from being kinda boring, I was really annoyed with every character in the book. There are quite a few storylines going on in this series, and the ONE that I really wanted to advance--the one that has kept me following along like a damn groupie--is the one that didn't advance much at all. If anything, I feel like we have taken several steps back--and that pisses me right tf off!

Everyone is running around as usual trying to save humanity and all, and the bad guys are still causing problems around every corner; in this, Blackout stays true to form. In everything else though, I feel completely let down. The one character that I felt showed a little character development in this installment was Shepherd, and, as much as it pains me to say it, I wasn't impressed or moved by it. I was annoyed by it, and everyone else was just kind of 'meh'. Well...let me not lie. One character did pique my interest, and I am actually quite interested in learning a little more about him (even though I really don't like his name), and that is Merry. I mean, who isn't interested in a long-haired blonde with dimples who carries a sword and looks like he stepped off a magazine cover? Yeah, I know...I can be such a basic bitch sometimes. Don't get me wrong, Christian is still my main man..errrrr...vamp, but Merry definitely had me side-eyeing him pretty fecking hard. DAMN ALL THESE RH BOOKS I HAVE BEEN READING LATELY! Now all I can think about is how much I would not hate this veering into m/f/m territory. Oh God! Dannika, are you reading this?? Can we totally go there please?!?!

Fans of this series will still love and continue reading this series (yes, I'm already chomping at the bit for the next one), but for me, Blackout is not as good as the other books thus far.

Love the characters, humor, banter...especially how they're done on the audible version. Definately could use a brief summary of characters & breed/abilities because I was lost initially trying to remember names, nicknames, constantly thinking how now who was that? Especially when reading a number of fantasy books. The push pull plot is getting a bit thin and old. The secondary characters need some growth, romance. Book five and I'm still waiting for something that resolves the main chatacters and moves the action along. The characters are fun but feels like they're all still singing the same notes i checked out several times in the middle of the book...then the last 20 minutes of the listen there's a predictable touching scene and some resolution. I have enjoyed this series. However its suffering from what I've noticed in so many series the trilogy that turns into too many books so there's a lot of repetitive dialog & overcwritten scenes that don't really develop or move the story forward. I liked the writing approach she used in Her Seven series because each book addressed a specific chatacter's story.

Obviously, if I'm this far into the series then I'm a fan. The series has enough dramatic pull to keep the suspense and two main characters in Christain and Raven that keeps things interesting. Though, Christian has a

I'm a bit annoyed with Raven. Every single book she tests Victor by doing something against his orders, even if it helps alittle. I wouldn't trust her if I worked with her. Raven is not a teenager, yet this book has her progressing back to immature reactions and insecure thoughts.

Usually these books have pulled me in immediately. Especially when Christian has a big part. However for this one, the first major event has happened and I'm like "Meh".

Not that I don't like Gem... but unless it's about her and Niko getting it on I'm not as interested in her in comparison to Raven and Christain. I'm not sure if the author has anything planned... but maybe some pre-keystone side novels could get me more invested in the side characters. Same for Blue... I'm curious about the idea of her and Victor potentially getting together, but not in her solo... that could change though.

I dont know why I never posted my notes for this novel. I just happened to see it still in my 'Currently Reading' even though I finished this one shortly after it was released.

3 Stars 🌟🌟🌟- Good Book. I like the overall concept and it was delivered well. Most common ranking for a book I enjoyed and look forward to the next.

Keystone is pulled into a case that involves the murder of members of the high breed authority. Someone is seating members that believe in the same thing as he does...the upcoming extermination of the humans. Only the blackout causes a snag in the chaos that's being set in motion.

I do enjoy Christian and Raven...those 2 make a good team. We learn more about other members of Keystone throughout the story.

Excellent installment in the series. The characters continue to develop, the intrigue, twists, and passion in Christian and Raven’s relationship developed and a mysterious ending. Love this series of Ms. Dark. Great audiobooks.

Better than previous offerings in the series although I thought the ending was a bit lame. I'm glad I waited to listen to this series, and I'm glad I could just go right into the next book which picks up where the last ends.

I loved the book. I wish Christian was a real person! He is my favorite character in Dannika's series.

Dannika Dark is a very talented writer. I love reading all her books. I never want her series to end.
