From the #1 New York Times bestselling team Andrea Beaty and David Roberts—who created Ada Twist, Scientist and Iggy Peck, Architect —comes a spirited story full of adventure, friendship, and science !
New York Times bestseller! Now a Netflix Series!
“Packs plenty of information into a high-flying adventure.” — School Library Journal
“Adventure, humor, and smart, likable characters make for a winning chapter book.” — Kirkus Reviews
In Ada Twist and the Perilous Pants , Ada must rely on her curious mind, her brave spirit, and her best pals, Rosie Revere and Iggy Peck, to solve a mystery in her own backyard.
Ada Twist is full of questions. A scientist to her very core, Ada asks why again and again. One question always leads to another until she’s off on a journey of discovery! When Rosie Revere’s Uncle Ned gets carried away wearing his famous helium pants, it’s up to Ada and friends to chase him down. As Uncle Ned floats farther and farther away, Ada starts asking lots of How high can a balloon float? Is it possible for Uncle Ned to float into outer space? And what’s the best plan for getting him down?
Ada Twist and the Perilous Pants is the second in a unique and exciting series of chapter books for children, parents, and teachers who want to make STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) fun.

This new addition to the Questioneers Chapter Book Series focuses on Ada and teaches kids about gases. There is humor incorporated into this installment as well as some solid science for the chapter book set. The scientific method is demonstrated in concrete ways. Readers are also reminded that not all experiments will be a success and Ada models perseverance and adaptability. Both boys and girls will find this to be worth picking up. If I had been able to view the finished artwork along with the text I might have found it to be worth five stars.
A big thank you to ABRAMs Kids and NetGalley for a digital ARC of this book.
A silly situation brings the Questioneers together, and allows the author to convey a number of scientific concepts clearly and simply. The illustrations are great, and Ada’s smart as heck and cute as a button.
Our boys loved Beaty's Rosie, Iggy, and Ada picture books and really enjoy the STEM aspect. Our older son is very interested in this new "Questioneers" chapter book series and loved seeing the further adventures and problem solving of these well-loved characters in the first book with Rosie. He was thrilled to check out this edition with Ada.
These books connect with our kids because failure and disappoint happen (and isn't avoided like many books for kids) and you are able to feel that which I think it is important. The problem-solving step is a great thing to show that ideas don't always go as planned but that doesn't mean that things can't still work out in a different way and that making an effort and trying is a success in itself.
This book was fun to read also has real-life lessons about perseverance and empowerment. We were also happy to see that the beautiful illustrations by David Roberts are still included which are such a positive addition to this wonderful storytelling. Highly recommend! Thank you to NetGalley and ABRAMS kids for a copy of this book, all opinions are our own.
This was my first intro to Ada Twist & her science friends. It reminded of The Magic School Bus, which I loved as a kid.
A great book for elementary/grade school kids just like my 7 year old son, who asks a lot of scientific questions like: why does helium make a balloon float? Why do we only float in space, etc.
This was a cute book based on Ada Twist, Rosie Revere, and Iggy Peck. I love the positive messages for young females and kids of color. The story is pretty basic, but the book's real value lies in its message and ability to be read by learning readers.
I love this book personally, it comes with knowledgeable facts that I did not know of. I think this book is good for beginners and if you do not like to read. I think of Ada like myself because, I am very intrigued in art and cooking because it is my passion. I have never read one of Andrea Beaty’s books before but now that I have I am positive that Ada twist is on my favourite book list.
Ada Twist and the Perilous Pants is a fun story about a young scientist who loves to ask questions and try different experiments. In this book, Ada, is conducting experiments about air masses and gases when Uncle Ned happens to float by in his helium pants. When he suddenly floats away and gets caught in an whirlwind, can Ada, and her friends Rosie Revere and Iggy Peck, find a solution to help Uncle Ned return back to the ground? This shorter chapter book is filled with facts and science explanations that young readers will understand and it’s a great book to model questioning and scientific thinking. My students love the Ada Twist Scientist picture book and I can’t wait to introduce them to this new chapter book/series! Thank you #NetGalley and ABRAMS Kids for an ARC of this book (all opinions are my own). #Questioneers
Ada Twist and the Perilous Pants is a fantastic continuation of the The Questioneers series by Andrea Beaty. This beginning chapter book series encourages young readers to learn about the science around them and to be creative problem solvers. Just like the picture books and the first novel in the series, Ada Twist and the Perilous Pants is adorable and inspirational and I greatly enjoyed reading about Ada working to save Uncle Ned from his own helium pants invention!
I highly recommend this series be included in school and classroom libraries serving children in grades 2-4 and I look forward to more... I assume Iggy will get his own novel next!
The second title in The Questioneers chapter book series, which is based on the best-selling picture books featuring these same characters. When Rosie's Uncle Fred takes her Uncle Ned out for a float in his helium pants and accidentally lets go of the rope, Uncle Ned flies all over town. Ada and her STEM-inspired friends use their talents to keep him from flying away or falling to the ground. Back matter contains a poem about gas as well as information about birds and the environment.
Any book that promotes science (and some pretty complex science) in a fun, inviting and interesting way is good for me. The Questioneers books are just wonderful and I’m so glad they’re now in chapter book form. I loved how this was a bit silly but a lot science-y. Ada is one very smart little scientist!!
Ada Twist loves asking science questions and conducting experiments. But when Rosie’s uncle Ned flies away in his helium-filled pants, Ada is determined to help her friend bring him back safely. Will the combined efforts of Rosie, Ada, and Iggy be enough to bring Uncle Ned down safely?
The second chapter book of a beloved series infused with science, facts, and a whole lot of fun!

Filled with facts and science explanations that young readers will understand. It's a great book to model questioning and scientific thinking.
A delightful celebration of STEM STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathmatics.
Recommend this book for any girl with an interest in science. I think any child between 6-10 years old would enjoy this scientific tale but adults young and old can enjoy this too.

133 pgs. This is a great book for aspiring scientists. Ada is on the stinky trail of science topics like molecules, gases, and smells. She is inquisitive and tenacious. She tries not to bother her brother and use this "stuff" but it seems impossible. She needs so many items while conducting her research. This time Ada is trying to help Rosie's Uncle Ned whose helium-filled pants have taken him for quite a dangerous ride. Great fun with lots of science sprinkled throughout the book. Kids will enjoy this one. Highly recommended for Grades 4-5.
Ada Twist is a scientist and she loves finding answers to all of her questions. When Ada's friend Rosie's Uncle Ned, wearing his helium pants, has a mishap and is floating farther away, Ada's questioning mind and her desire for answers are just what it takes to save the day.
I read this book aloud to my five-year-old twins, and they both said they liked it and it was funny and they think lots of people should read it. My son said readers will think the pants are funny, and my daughter said she likes Ada because she does experiments. As an adult, I also enjoyed the book. It was a fun story, and I'm looking forward to seeing the final version with the finished illustrations. My kids and I have enjoyed both of the chapter books in this series, as well as the picture books, and will definitely be reading more about Ada, Iggy, and Rosie in the future.
I read an ARC via #NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
An excellent entry in the "engaging stories with sound science behind them" canon--which seems pretty small as of right now. This series has a little less story flow than Zoey and Sassafras, but more clear ties to the science behind the plot, and both are equally fun and informative overall. Definitely recommended.
It was alright, but not great. Ada is obsessed with being curious and basically questions every phenomenon and molecule that she can, to the point of seeming almost overwrought. I much prefer the "Zoey and Sassafras" series, which also features a young black heroine with a scientific mind.
Ada Twist, Rosie Revere, and Iggy Peck have their own chapter books! Now kids who loved the picture books can learn more complex science concepts in this great chapter book series.
Ada is very interested in finding out about her myriad of questions, like do warm stinky shoes smell worse than old stinky shoes? She’s participating in the Great Backyard Bird Count when Rosie’s Uncle Ned comes floating by in his helium pants. Rosie and Iggy are trying to rescue him as he’s floated away. The three friends work with others to help rescue Uncle Ned.
I learned a lot about air pressure and air currents. The science concepts are explained in simple terms that are easy to understand but not too simplistic to insult a kid interested in science.
I will be recommending this entire series of chapter books to kids.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for an advanced reading copy.
A continuing of the picture books. This is book 2 in this chapter book. Few bumps for adult readers but grade 3 should love. Especially if like science, asking questions and funny friendship stories
Absolutely adorable book. I will definitely use this when we return to school to teach about characters as well as how books can move us to action. The Great Bird count.
Andrea Beaty does it again with book two of the Questioneers series. With Ada as less in this story, the team of friends have science to thank for their mystery solving. When uncle Ned's helium pants take him on a dangerous adventure, Ads had to use science to figure out how to keep him safe. The book was fun, fact-filed and easy to read.
Ada Twist and the Perilous Pants is a cute book filled with great information. Ada is a young scientist whose mind is overflowing with questions and answers, but no logical way of explaining things so others can understand her. When her friend's uncle is in trouble, Ada has possible solutions, if she could only find a way to get her thoughts in order. Many people, young and old, can relate to Ada. I loved the fact Beaty included the Great Backyard Bird Count in this story. As nice as the story is, I found Ada quite annoying with her "Zowie" expression and it's another story where adults are inept and the day is saved by a child. Yes, it's a children's book, but many of the adults in the book would have better reactions to Uncle Ned's cries for help. Overall, a cute, quick read and I am sure lots of children will enjoy reading about Ada's adventures.
Thank you NetGalley and Amulet Books for the opportunity to read an advance reader copy.
Another cute conundrum solved through the use of science. Ada uses her knowledge of gases and birds to help Uncle Ned, whose flying pants have him floating adrift the Riveteer's town.
Budding scientists, rejoice! The Questioneers is the perfect series to show you the how and to have some extra scientific fun! ADA TWIST AND THE PERILOUS PANTS is a delightful book that follows Ada Twist, a scientist who may borrow her brother's stuff too much without asking. Her experiments can be messy, but she is making important discoveries. The book begins with Ada noticing that her parents' coffees smell different- the cold one does not smell as much as the hot one. Ada creates a hypothesis about why (heat of the coffee) and then designs some experiments to test it.
However, soon, she finds out there is a problem- an uncle wearing helium-filled pants has floated away. Ada is ready to use science to explain the problem and identify potential solutions. Luckily, science can save the day- with the help of Ada and her friends and family. Ada also takes the opportunity to identify some birds that the uncle sees on his perilous journey.
What I loved: So much about this book is amazing! It's humorous and certainly giggle-worthy. The illustrations are also perfectly suited to the text and add some extra fun to this book. The best part is the depiction of science and the scientific method so perfectly! As a scientist myself, it was fantastic to get to see children excited about science and to teach them so easily about how to employ scientific experiments in their own lives (but making sure they ask before borrowing people's things, of course). Thus, this is a great book for children broadly as they can learn and get excited about science in a really approachable way.
Final verdict: A delightful celebration of STEM with a tenacious main character, ADA TWIST AND THE PERILOUS PANTS is a fantastic read for elementary school aged children who will giggle at the plot while learning how the scientific method can be enjoyable! Highly recommend for chapter book readers who like great images, strong characters, and a funny plot!
Ada is full of questions as always. Why does her mother's coffee have a stronger smell than her father's? Why do her brothers shoes stink so much? What kind of birds are in her backyard? And then, a man in puffy pants comes floating in to her backyard. Floating! It turns out that her friend Rosie Revere's uncle was wearing pants filled with helium and the person who was holding the safety rope let go. Off floated Uncle Ned and now the girls and Iggy Peck have to get him down before he floats away and is lost forever.
Ada uses what she knows about predicting the direction of the wind, gases, buoyancy, and temperature to bring Uncle Ned back down to safety. Her friends Rosie and Iggy have ideas too, but this situation is more suited to Ada's scientific knowledge than to Rosie's inventions or Iggy's architectural know-how.
The scenes with Ada's family are very believable. Her cat and older brother run when they see her tapping her chin, because they know she is about to experiment on something and they don't want to be the subject of her study. Her mother and father encourage her gently, "Keep investigating ... you'll figure it out." But they also make rules such as, "Don't take Arthur's things without his permission." Even when they become exasperated with her experiments or endless curiosity, they always love her and forgive her enthusiasm.
Many of us have loved the picture book adventures of these friends and rejoiced when the chapter book series began. The Questioneers book 2, carries on the proud tradition and leaves us ready for more STEM fun with the whole gang. In the back matter there is an explanation of Citizen Science with specific details about the Great Backyard Bird Count that Ada is practicing for in the story. There is also a very funny "Ode to a Gas!"
I read an ARC provided by the publisher for review purposes.
