I didn't think I'd ever return to this town.

We weren't together long, but I loved my wife deeply. Brooke meant the world to me and in her dying days, I married her. It's been a year since I lost her and I haven't been quite the same. It feels like my life has been put on hold and I'm not sure how to get it back on track.

But apparently, Brooke believed she knew how to help me through my grief. On the anniversary of her death, a stranger shows up at my door claiming to be Brooke's old best friend. Danielle claims Brooke left her a series of letters telling her to invite me on a road trip to commemorate her death. But it feels all wrong. Danielle seems nice enough, but this is the last thing I want to do a year after the loss of my wife.

But if it was Brooke's dying wish, I have to fulfill it.

This isn't easy for me either.

When my old best friend Brooke was dying, I was traveling abroad and had no idea how dire her situation had become. I have a lot of guilt for not being there for her death, even though she gave me no inkling she was dying. So, though it's awkward for me, I feel I have to take Brooke's widow, Natalie, on this road trip with me. I have to do this one last favor for my old friend.

Natalie won't make it easy on me though. It's clear she has no interest in this. But I can't give up, I have to take her on this trip for Brooke's sake. So, who knows, maybe we will find ourselves somewhere along the way.

And I hope I can shove down these budding feelings I have for Natalie, because I cannot get involved with the wife of my dead best friend.

This is a standalone lesbian romance novel with HEA ending!

This has seriously got to be one of the worst F/F stories I've ever read, regardless of its M/M origin or the fact that many KU F/Fs start out that way. THE TRIP is a novella, yet it took me 3 days to read. I know a few months ago I swore off this author, but in truth it's so hard to. You want to not give up hope, that the author HAS to present something that resonates with you after a while. Personally, this is a misguided notion I have to learn to let go of. Sometimes you don't see eye-to-eye on a piece of art & that's okay. Sometimes it's not worth giving someone a second chance, also okay. In light of this, I will no longer be continuing Bryant's endeavors.

Natalie has only been dating Brooke for a few months, but when Brooke is diagnosed with terminal brain cancer, they tie the knot. Never feeling truly in love with Brooke, Natalie struggles with the guilt of not feeling worse about her wife's death & the anger of being a caretaker instead of a lover. A year after Brooke's death, her best friend, Danielle shows up at Natalie's door. Danielle claims that Brooke put her up to this & gives her a series of letters, explaining everything.

Eventually the two women fall in love, which is where Bryant tends to lose me in her tales. Too instalove, the only thing they have in common is Brooke & even then I didn't believe their affection for each other. To get to point A to point B (aka the HEA) was cringeworthy & uncomfortable. Nothing about their relationship felt organic & frankly, Natalie spent way too much time commenting on her moral conflicts. Yes, I get that you didn't really love Brooke. No, I don't understand how you could love a woman you basically went on a scavenger hunt with. Just...so many things wrong with this picture. I can't even.

Looks like Bryant's works just aren't for me.

What happened

Why didn't we get to read Brookes letters? I feel like we were left wanting. How can we know how it was okay for them if we don't know what Brooke said? Feels unfinished

The Trip — Edie Bryant (13 chapters + Epilogue) August 2-3, 2017

Note: This story contains f/f sexual scenes between two consenting adults. If tis is not your cup of tea, I suggest you read something else.

I really like the plots this author comes with, but her execution is a little…well, passive and abrupt. She needs to use more active language, and smoother transitions. She likes to use the F-word, (I have no issues with that,) but it gets used in a way that doesn’t seem all together natural.

There were also inconsistencies. (First Natalie was a software engineer; then later she said she worked in upper management.) The one super-sexy scene was filled with grammatical errors (typos, incomplete sentences, editing errors.)

These stories always start out cute and good, and so far, from what I have read by this author, the end up a whole lotta hot mess. This author needs someone to help her refine her ideas; it would benefit and improve the plots.

I like the story a lot, but the issues mentioned above make it a two star. I can see where a lot of people would not be able to finish this book. I can also see people, like myself that would soldier on, knowing it won’t get better, but hopeful that this could-be-promising author will get it together. Finally....the bait-n-switch at the end of the book to get the free bonus chapter of this story was pretty slimy of the author. Ick!

Two stars.

It was ok.

I liked the book but I also didn't like it. First the thing that irritated me the most would of been it showed little interaction with the characters, I couldn't see how Danielle could have fallen in love with Natalie as quick as she did and with as little communication as they had, the way that Danielle claimed her love for her was a little off. I found myself not liking Natalie very much through out the book. She had a very quick temper as well. And then when it came to being intimate it seemed very rushed and there was quite a few misspellings at that point. I also hated how it never was told what the last letter was said. Maybe it's just how I feel, maybe others would like it. It was quick and to the point for sure.

Novella in length, The Trip is pretty short.

The book is "reimagined" from a previous m/m version. Natalie and Danielle come together a year after Brooke has died. Natalie was her spouse and Danielle was her childhood best friend. Brooke tasked Danielle with taking Natalie on a trip to help her overcome disabling grief.

This is soulmate romance. Grief and guilt are twin dragons that must be slayed by this newly minted couple. Suspension of disbelief is a necessity when reading this book. I'd give it about a 2.5 point rating.

Not happy with author

I enjoyed the book until the end. It is very deceitful for authors to want you to join their mailing list so badly, that they entice you with a final chapter or bonus chapter for their book. It really bothers me at the lengths they go to.

Good

Very nice, light reading I enjoyed a lot. Because love come when you least expect it. and fate inevitable. Through pain, sacrifice, guilt and depression we learn and love wins.
