After losing her father and husband in a mine disaster, Priscilla Heartsel faces poverty and eviction from her home by a heartless mine owner. Tricked into a bank robbery gone wrong, Braxton Gamble finds himself shot and unconscious in Priscilla's bed. Can they survive long enough to find a love more precious than gold? A sweet read.

Priscilla begins the multi-author series, The Widows of Wildcat Ridge. The premise of the series is intriguing and realistic for the time period. An explosion in a local gold mine where most of the men of this small, frontier town worked has killed almost every male citizen. The widows are left to pick up the pieces of their lives, rebuild the town and simply survive as best they can. Add to the mix an odious, dastardly land owner who practically owns the town and plans to pack up the buildings to move on to another gold mine he owns. He requires rent, mortgage payments from the women and none can take over their husband’s businesses… he’ll only accept money payment from men – from the women, he’s willing to barter, and his requirements are rather disgusting. So in order to remain in their homes the women must find husbands… quickly. Mortimer is an absolute piece of crap, and hopefully at some point he’ll get exactly what he deserves.
Every reader has their own perception of a “clean” romance. I read across genre and heat levels, so my perception is different from yours – and that’s perfectly fine. So I’ll mention that there is slightly rough language, a few “hell”s some cuss words that aren’t finished, but we certainly can finish the thought in our own minds. There is intense kissing, and the suggestion of enjoying those kisses very much. There is no sex but the attraction and the level of enjoyment of those kisses can certainly be felt. I certainly would consider this book within the “clean” range – but others may not. That perception is completely up to each individual reader, in my opinion.
Priscilla and Brax make an interesting couple, complete opposites in many ways but the attraction is strong between them. There are interesting twists and turns to this story – some you might see coming, others will, most likely, broadside you. It makes for an intriguing read that keeps you on your toes, that’s for sure. I enjoyed Priscilla, it’s a story that will keep your attention, does a bit of world building for the series, and presents threads that will probably weave throughout this series. If you enjoy Western Historical Romance, and your definition of “clean” romances can vary a bit but still remain within “good taste” then I believe you will enjoy this story. As to the details of this romance, for those you need to read the book. Expect to laugh, get mad, swoon a bit and have a good time.
I read this title through my Kindle Unlimited subscription.
This book had a lot of potential, but just didn't hit the mark for me. The premise and plot were engaging, and I enjoyed seeing how everything came together at the end.
However, if I had to sum this book up in one word it would be "contrived." The hero and heroine did not feel well-suited for each other, and there were several moments in the development of their romance that made me cringe a little. There were also a few things that felt off about the historical setting. Not enough to be jarring, just enough that it felt out of place. Finally, the plot with the stolen money was completely obvious and yet hard to believe from a character development standpoint.
I wish this book had been executed at a level that matched it's potential, because that would have been a spectacular book. As it is, though, I was quite disappointed.
Priscilla: The Widows of Wildcat Ridge Series Book 1
Book one in this exciting new series, Widows of Wildcat Ridges, starts the series off with a bang and it pulled me in from the very first page. A strong storyline along with well thought out characters I love, and a few that were unsavory and dastardly, made it hard to put down. An unexpected surprise was fun! I love a strong heroine and the author didn't disappoint me. Priscilla is a strong, somewhat stubborn woman, who dusts off her hands and gets back to the tasks of living after suffering a great loss. Add Braxton, our hero. Handsome and with a devilish way about him and you have the romance and angst along the way to a HEA. I really enjoyed this book by a favorite author, Charlene Raddon. Been reading her books for a long time and always a 5 Star Book. I am looking forward to reading each one in this new series, written by several different authors, many that are favorites of mine. Priscilla is the first installment from Charlene Raddon’s new series, The Widows of Wildcat Ridge Series. It is, also, my first introduction to her work. Priscilla Heartsel goes through so much tragedy in her life. I liked it when she finds Braxton Gamble. I found their story to be intriguing. I was rooting for Priscilla’s happiness until the end.
I give Priscilla four and a half stars. I would love to continue to read the others in The Widows of Wildcat Ridge series.
I received this book from the author. This review is 100% my own honest opinion.
Kept me glued to it from beginning to end with well drawn and unique characters. The author managed to give the heroine strength of character without sacrificing femininity, a rare feat these days and much appreciated by this reader. A well thought out plot with many surprises kept this story going at a perfect pace. If you need an escape from these troubled times jump into a work by this author. I’m glad I did!
The series revolves around Wildcat Ridge, Utah, where the Gold King Mine was located. This is a historical western, multi-author series about the women left behind and what they must do to keep their homes, their late husband’s businesses, and survive. In March 1884, there was an explosion that altered the lives of those who did not perish in the disaster. One hundred and forty-three men, plus nineteen women and thirteen children, died that fateful day. Now, Mortimer Crane is making threats against those left behind because he owns the town.
“Mortimer Crane owns this town, whether we like it or not. If he chooses to tear down our buildings or move them to his new mine at Clear Creek, there is little we can do to stop him. Mortimer has given us three months to pay the rent and mortgage payments we owe him before he tears down the town. And he will not renew rental leases for any woman running a business in her dead husband’s absence unless she has a new husband managing the business.”
“We can’t avoid the obvious, ladies. We must remarry.”
Justine: We could send out ads offering businesses already set up, stocked, and ready to run, to men willing to marry us. Cordelia: Aren’t we rushing matters a bit? Our men are barely cold in the ground yet. Priscilla: The point is, ladies. We have no choice.
Braxton Gable is in Curdy’s Crossing, four miles from Wildcat Ridge, playing cards and being plied with drinks. He’s out of money, and the other two men, Irish O’Malley and Logan Cash, must help him up and outside, and lead him over to the bank, where Irish and Logan plan to rob it. Braxton is caught in a bad situation, and while he gives the saddlebag to the teller, an elderly woman, he refuses to shoot her, and is shot himself. He gets outside, releases the horses, and leaves town carrying the saddlebag. Hearing that Wildcat Ridge is an abandoned town, he heads there.
Priscilla Heartsel lost two men the day of the explosion and collapse of Gold King Mine: her father, Reverend Bainum, and her husband, Robert Heartsel, attorney. What a shock when Priscilla gets home from the town meeting and sees mud on her floors. She grabs a gun, heads upstairs, and finds a man, unconscious, bleeding out on her bed. She starts medical care, removes the bullet, and tends to him for days.
The story was an interesting, page-turning tale and a great start to this series. It has the good, the bad, and the ugly of people. Priscilla has no desire to start over, but fate has different plans for her. While she misses her father and husband, the marriage wasn’t the best in some areas. Priscilla wants to be a mother—and that would mean marriage—but is it worth it? It isn’t long before Priscilla realizes Braxton and Robert are opposites. When Braxton kisses her, it stirs a passion within her she doesn’t recognize. But is Braxton just passing through? Even with him cleared of the ‘robbery charges’, things still aren’t settled. What happens when Irish and Logan come calling, wanting the stolen cash? How far are they willing to go to get the money? What happens when a friend is discovered to be keeping secrets, and life and death come into play?
Another great historical by a first-time author for me. I didn’t know what to expect when I picked up this one. You never know, do you? Well, let’s just say that I was pleasantly surprised by this book, and yes, I plan on reading the next books. I just have to find out about Thalia, Hester, Cordelia and the other women that are left after the mine accident that took most of the men in town. Plus, Mortimer is a just a hoot when he gets caught in his own lies and fantasies going on in his mind. I know, he supposed to be the “villain” but I just thought he was a wonderful character for these women to stand up to and realize that they will not be bullied anymore.
Brax and Priscilla are wonderful together. For a clean romance, there is a sizzling amount of chemistry between these two. Yes, I said clean. Kisses only but wow can Ms. Raddon write the buildup between the characters and this is a historical romance where most of the time sex wasn’t talked about at all. I’ve read some really good books with bad romances and smexy times all rolled into one. You don’t have to worry about that in this book. Ms. Raddon delivers.
I absolutely loved the mystery element in the book and the whole plot arc that will be featured in the rest of the series. I’m really enjoying when authors do this. You get a complete romance between two characters but the plot isn’t finished. The suspense/mystery will be featured in the other books. Plus, this one had me guessing into the very end. I never would have thought that…oops. almost give it away but let’s just say, I never saw it coming.
I want to thank Ms. Raddon for writing a beautiful romance filled with some sweet moments, suspenseful scenes and a good mystery and villain that I can’t wait to read about some more. Peeps, you need to read this book. It was exactly what I needed to read right now.
More like The Man Haters of Wildcat Ridge! I am so disappointed, there were actually so many good points about this story that I kept pushing thru the heroine's bitchiness, hoping she would mellow out a bit.
I loved the theme of how the town was left with a bunch of widows/unmarried females that realised it would be best to find husbands to save their town and keep it running. I loved the hero, he had a great personality, was an honest speaker, teased romantically...
But the heroine just came across as a man hater. On one hand she was nice enough to have healed our hero and taken care of him, but the second that he flirted with her, she would become a starchy "how dare you flirt with me!" kind of shrew. And the hero was so cute in his flirtations. Bummer. Another annoyance... the time period was in the Gold Rush 1800's sometime. So when the hero first learned that the mayor and the sheriff of this little town were both women, he expressed shock. Not disgust, or outrage, just shock. I think it would be a rather big surprise to find a female holding either of those jobs in the 1800's... but our heroine was incensed and disgusted at the hero's reaction of shock. She mistook his surprise for disapproval of a female holding these positions and she needed to get bitchy about it...
Still on my search for a good romance book where the heroine lets the hero be a hero...
Its been sometime since I've read any historical romance books. It always remind me of my history class - very boring , they just don't appeal to me for some unknown reason, this book exceeded WAY OUT of my expectations for a historical romance book.
What I dont like about the book is that the plot is pretty predictable to me . ( or maybe because i'm a genius at guessing plots hahaha) and THATS ALL. No other things that I don't like about it,wow. I'm normally pretty picky with romance books because there are so much books of this genre out there.
What I do like of this book is the plot is very smooth, there are a few plot twists in the book to keep you going so you won't be bored. And the plot is different from what I normally read (time setting etc) its refreshing to me and a very nice book to chill with it. It is comfortable to read and you'll throughly enjoy reading it.
Priscilla was such a kind-hearted girl, she can be a little too naive at times but you'll learn to outgrow it. Braxton exceeded my hopes for Priscilla, he is a nice man and respected and deeply cared for her *awww* I'd definitely be interested in reading other installments of the series in the future!
Most of the men were killed in a mining accident leaving many women widows. What were they going to do? How would they survive? They came up with the idea that they should all marry again because women couldn't own businesses so without a husband they we're doomed. Meanwhile in another town Braxton Gamble got drunk and accompanied Logan and Cash to the bank to make a withdrawal, only it was to rob the bank. They wanted Braxton to kill the elderly woman who worked in the bank. He managed to hit Cash and escape. He was shot as he escaped. He ended up in the town where the women lived and since he was shot he broke into what he thought was an empty house. It was Priscilla house and she found him injured and passed out on her bed. She nursed him back to health only to have the Marshall arrest him when Priscilla and Braxton told her about the robbery. Cash and Logan came looking for him. The story gets very interesting when these two come to town. I won't spoil the story for you. Read the book, you'll enjoy it.
Widows of Wildcat Ridge is a new historical series that explores what happens to a mining town after an accident at the mine takes the lives of most of the men, leaving their widows to survive and rebuild the town. Priscilla is the first book in the series. It can stand alone, but it draws the reader into the community and leaves the reader wanting to continue to read the following books to learn more about what happens in Wildcat Ridge. The main characters are Priscilla Heartsel, a strong resilient woman who lost both her husband and father and Braxton Gamble, a man who she nurses back to health from a gunshot wound obtained during a bank robbery. These two make an unlikely couple that work well together, leaving the reader rooting for their HEA. Add in a couple of villains and a surprise plot twist and you have a story that keeps you interested and wanting more! I highly recommend Priscilla!
I love when an Author can hook you into a new book from page one! This book shows just how much determination two people can have to remove themselves from a painful past and work to come together to show each other just how happy they can be. Priscilla is hard working and fighting to retain her town. Braxton Gamble appears in her bed one night while she is out. She finds him bleeding and near death. She works to save his life and their story begins. Stubbornness prevails, along with a little danger and excitement! You won't be able to put this book down. I received an ARC of this book. This review is my choice and all opinions in it are my own.
Loved this story. It's so hard to find sweet romance story that you can share with your daughters and feel good about today and this is a lovely example of just that very thing. I can't wait to share this with my 16 year old granddaughter who is constantly being assaulted by the "worldly" things like 50 shades of grey and she hates that her friends reads things like that. Those are not our family standards and clean sweet romance is wonderful to find. Thank you Charlene Raddon you have just become our new favorite author! Can't wait to read the whole series.
This was a sweet read despite all the danger surrounding Wildcat Ridge. Priscilla thought she knew what she wanted after losing her husband. I loved how her generosity and innocence came through, along with the fear as she realized there was more to her world. Braxton was a great guy with his honesty and protectiveness once he met Priscilla. They made a nice couple trying to survive the rough times. I would enjoy visiting Wildcat Ridge again to see how the town regrows.
I received an ARC of this story through Goddessfish Promotions, and this is my unsolicited review.
This first book in the Widows of Wildcat Ridge series was a great first book to introduce the premise for the series and explore the town and those left behind after the mining tragedy that took most of the men, some women and children after the mine explosion. It is thrilling and a wild ride as well as the story telling and characters that keep you reading. I really enjoyed this first book and its hero and heroine are awesome characters that are well developed as is the plot line for this story. It’s a fantastic read from beginning to end and one that is hard to put down.
I loved this first book in the series, and can't wait to read the other books!
Wow, this first book in the series was great, I couldn't put it down because I wanted to find out what was going to happen next with Priscilla and Braxton especially knowing there where outlaws after Braxton. Also what happened with Etta came as a big surprise to me, and I couldn't believe what happened with her. Now I truly can't wait to read the other books in this series so that I can find out what happens with the other widows in Wildcat Ridge, will they get their HEA also!
Many widows and orphans as a result of the mine explosion and collapse with few men remaining in Wildcat Ridge. The preachers daughter was one of those widows. Priscilla was proper, alone and running out of money. They were talking, having meetings and looking for ways to get men to visit and stay in the town. Along came a wounded man, Braxton. It's an interesting read and can be enjoyed by anyone.
Wildcat Ridge is devastated by possible earthquakes and landslide. Close to 200 souls were lost leaving numerous widows. The town is owned almost totally by an evil and unscrupulous man. The townsfolk are left with our many options for livelihood and at mercy of the land and building owner. Braxton meets Priscilla and they are attracted to one another. It is fun to read of their adventures and see if they find their happily ever after. You will enjoy this book.
Priscilla is a widow. She and most of her friends lost husbands fathers and children in a mine collapse. Braxton gets drunk and follows two acquaintances to make a withdrawal from the bank. It turns out it was a bank robbery and he was to be the patsy. He stopped the two men from killing the teller and escaped with the money. He was shot in the process. He ends up in Priscilla’s bed. She nursed him back to health. This is a good book with a twist.
Cute, easy read- I wasn't expecting much from it, but it kept my interest and was a quick book, so I gave it 3 stars. I'm not a huge historical romance fan anymore (10-15 years I was obsessed with them though 🤣), but I still enjoyed this, even if it was a little cheesy and incredibly predictable. It reminded me a lot of When Calls the Heart (the TV series; I've never read those books). Not a bad book, but nothing memorable either 🤷♀️😊
Pricilla is one one over two dozen widows left in depair after losing husbands, siblings and children in a mine explosion. She comes home to find a wounded man and attempts to care for him. Later the man, Braxton, recovers to become an deputy marshall when he is supposedly cleared of the charge. She doesn't want to remarry but he falls for her and tries to court her. This is a cute story with twists and turns that make it a page turner and has a very much feel good ending.
What a wonderful first book full of surprises and interesting people that draw you into the story that you cannot put down. A page turner that you just had to keep reading. This great author always does this in her books, but this one was like a roller coaster. Great job Charlene! Loved it! I can't wait to read the other books yet to come out.
A great start to a series. I love this story. A mix of crime, tragedy, female power, humor and love. This is a multiple author series which allows readers to find new authors to follow. A very creative idea for a series. I hope everyone starts at book one and continues on to the end. I highly recommend this book.🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟💖💖💖💖💖
This was a nice story. It was also somewhat of a mystery. It was a little slow at times for me. The story kept going it just didn't keep me as riveted as other stories do. This does not mean that it was bad. The characters were created wonderfully. I especially like the qualities of the two main characters. However, the qualities to the character development spreads horizontally.
I give this 2 star rating because unfortunately some language and it was a little to graphic in about some areas to me to be considered sweet and clean, it would have been a good read otherwise!
What a wonderful book, sweet and sad at the same time, to lose so many at one time is heart breaking, but strong willed women will do what they must and keep their town going.
Priscilla character and storyline was a page turner.no downloaded to my kindle fire and enjoy it from the beginning to end. Looking forward to reading the series of the Wildcat widows. I would recommend this author book to my family and friends.
I'd been wanting to start this series, so when the book popped up on KU it was a good time to get it. So glad that I did! Hard to put down as the story kept you moving with a really good twist. On to book two in the series! You won't be sorry!
Like a.lot western romances but with a smidge more oomph. Cast of characters well rounded & have individual idiosyncrasies to match. Great for a rainy afternoon day.
