சந்திரனும் வேலய்யனும் இளமை நண்பர்கள். இருவரும் இளமையில் ஒரே வகுப்பில் பயின்று, ஒன்றாகவே விளையாடி, ஒன்றாகவே வளர்ந்தவர்கள். ஆனால், பத்தாவது வகுப்புக்குப் பின்னர், அவர்கள் வாழ்வில் பிரிவு ஏற்பட்டது. பிரிவு விரிந்து பரந்து ஒருவரை ஒருவர் எட்டாத அளவிற்குக் கொண்டு சேர்த்துவிட்டது. சந்திரனுடைய வாழ்வு மேடு பள்ளம் நிறைந்தது. வேலய்யனுடைய வாழ்வு சமவெளியில் அமைதியாகச் செல்லும் பெரிய ஆற்றை ஒத்தது.
சந்திரனுடைய வாழ்க்கை அரளிச் செடியைப் போல், ஒருபுறம் கண்ணைக் கவரும் அழகும் நறுமணமும் உடைய மலர்களைக் கொண்டு, மற்றொருபுறம் அவற்றிற்கு மாறான இயல்புள்ள இலைகளைக் கொண்டிருப்பது. வேலய்யனுடைய வாழ்க்கை துளசிச் செடியைப் போன்றது. துளசிச் செடியில் அழகிய மலர்கள் இல்லை, வெறுக்கத்தக்க பகுதியும் இல்லை. மலரும், இலையும், தண்டும், வேரும் எல்லாம் ஒத்த ஒரே வகையான மணம் கமழ்வது அது.
சந்திரனைப் போல் நல்ல அழகும், கூரிய அறிவும் பெற்று அதனால் செருக்கடைந்து சீரழிந்து தாமும் கெட்டுப் பிறர்க்கும் சுமையாக வாழ்வதைவிட வேலய்யனைப் போல் அறிவு குறைவாக இருந்தாலும் சிறந்த பண்புகளைப் பெற்று அடக்கமான வாழ்வு வாழ்ந்தாலே போதும் என்ற உயர்ந்த வாழ்க்கைக் குறிக்கோள் இக்கதையைப் படிக்கின்றவர்கள் உள்ளத்தில் உருவாகும். இக்கதை இளைஞர்களுக்கு ஒரு பாடமாகவும் அமைகிறது. அகல்விளக்கு நாவலுக்கு சாகித்ய அகாதெமி விருது கிடைத்தது.

He was a prolific writer whose published works include 13 novels, 6 plays, 2 short story collections, 11 essay anthologies, a book on the history of Tamil literature, books on Tamil linguistics and children's books. During 1961–71, he was the head of the Tamil department at the University of Madras. In 1961, he was awarded the Sahitya Academy Award for Tamil for his novel Agalvilaku. During 1971–74, he was the vice-chancellor of the University of Madurai.
மு.வ எனச் சுருக்கமாக அழைக்கப்பட்ட மு. வரதராசன் 20ஆம் நூற்றாண்டின் புகழ் பெற்ற தமிழ் அறிஞர்களுள் ஒருவர். இலக்கியக் கட்டுரைகள், ஆராய்ச்சி நூல்கள் போன்றவை மட்டுமன்றிப் பல சிறுகதைகள், புதினங்கள் போன்றவற்றையும் எழுதியுள்ளார். இவர் சென்னை பச்சையப்பன் கல்லூரி, சென்னை பல்கலைக் கழகம் ஆகியவற்றில் தமிழ்த்துறைத் தலைமைப் பொறுப்பில் இருந்ததுடன், மதுரை காமராசர் பல்கலைக்கழகத்தின் துணைவேந்தராகவும் பணியாற்றினார். பன்முக ஆற்றல்கள் கொண்ட இவர் நல்லாசிரியராகவும், பண்பாளராகவும் விளங்கினார்
மு.வரதராசனார், தமிழ்நாடு, வட ஆற்காடு மாவட்டம், திருப்பத்தூரில் முனுசாமி முதலியார் - அம்மாக்கண்ணு தம்பதிக்கு பிறந்தார். திருவேங்கடம் என்று பெயரிடப்பட்டு அழைக்கப்பட்டாலும் தாத்தாவின் பெயரான வரதராசன் என்ற பெயரே அவருக்கு நிலைத்துவிட்டது. மு.வ. வின் கல்வி, வேலூர் மாவட்டம், வாலாஜாப்பேட்டை அருகிலுள்ள வேலம் என்னும் சிறிய கிராமத்துடன் இயைந்து வளர்ந்தது. உயர்நிலைக் கல்வியைத் திருப்பத்தூரில் கற்றுத் தேர்ந்தார். பதினாறு வயதில் பள்ளி இறுதித் தேர்வில் வெற்றி பெற்றார். 1928ம் ஆண்டில் திருப்பத்தூர் வட்டாட்சியர் அலுவலகத்தில் சில காலம் எழுத்தராகப் பணியாற்றினார்.
எழுத்தராகப் பணியாற்றிய போது உடல் நலம் குன்றியதால் அந்தப் பணியிலிருந்து விடுபட்டு ஓய்வுக்காக கிராமத்துக்குச் சென்று, அங்கு திருப்பத்தூர் முருகைய முதலியார் என்பவரிடம் தமிழ் கற்கத் தொடங்கினார். 1931 இல் வித்வான் முதல் நிலைத் தேர்வில் தேர்ச்சி பெற்றார். பின்னர் தாமே பயின்று 1935 இல் வித்வான் தேர்வு எழுதி, அதில் மாநிலத்திலேயே முதல் மாணாக்கராகத் தேர்ச்சி பெற்றார். 1935 ஆம் ஆண்டு தம் மாமன் மகளான ராதா அம்மையாரை மணந்தார். இவர்களுக்கு திருநாவுக்கரசு, நம்பி, பாரி ஆகிய ஆண் மக்கள் பிறந்தனர். 1935 முதல் 1938 வரை திருப்பத்தூர் பள்ளியில் தமிழ் ஆசிரியராகப் பணியாற்றினார். 1939ல் பி.ஓ.எல். தேர்ச்சி பெற்றார்.

Arguably the best novel by Mu.Va. The book was actually a part of our college Tamil curriculum thanks to our professors. The book is about two close friends (Chandran and the narrator) who are different in their intelligence, behaviour, habits and thoughts about life. The story revolves around them from their childhood to their adulthood. It gives a strong message to youngsters who even with good intelligence could suffer heavily if they have wrong thinking and choose the wrong ways in life. Mu.Va handles the story with personal touches(which could make one think that this is a semi-autobiography), elements of romance, heartbreaks and sympathy and a beautiful narration about the landscape of villages, towns and colleges of those times. A really engaging and impactful novel.

The book talks on two different characters their friend ship and separation. It talks from vela's point of view. Every one will have one such friend in life whom though we don't contact will be in our thoughts always.
The climax helps us understand every one will try to find solution for their problem in the best possible way they know. Some times it starts small and keeps going in belief more than analysis / ethics. It easy to judge but difficult to actually go through the situation.
Though the character of velu gets more importance, the thoughts of him and how he struggles with those thoughts not able to cope up with the same is well explained. While reading the novel seemed easy but the magnitude / the reason for the books praise is understood more after completely reading it and the impact it had on me.
I can relate lot of things during my college days with the book. One more book that made me understand the human nature of things and about people. Go for the book will be a very good thought provoking read.

Great authors transcend time. This book written 6 decades ago does not sound progressive anymore, but I can see how progressive this must have been at that point in time. Bold ideas and thoughts put forward in multiple places in the book.
My grand father loved Mu.Va's books. I read this book when I was a teenager, and I now realize I did not appreciate the book enough. I wish my grandpa was here with me to discuss about this book. I want to hear his thoughts on it.
Each character had a role and meaning. No line wasted, no story skipped, my perfect novel. The narrator is not in any way a hero, but just an honest man. Although this book glorifies virtue, it is not the fake-virtues (like 'women should obey men', which was and is considered a virtue by some). It talks about being conscientious and virtues similar to that.
The story revolves around the narrator who has both virtue and is not superstitious, and his observations on his two best friends, one with no virtue and one who believes in superstition.
Another beautiful thing about the book: There are a few flashbacks/recollections, and each time, we recollect the details and each time we feel differently about the same incident.
