The Lily Singer Adventures #4.5

Love, Lies, and Hocus Pocus Cat Magic

Rate this book
Saving the world is such a bother when it makes you late for your nap.

Blessed (or cursed, depending on who you ask) with human intelligence, Sir Edgar Allan Kipling, magical talking cat extraordinaire, spends most of his time keeping his human out of trouble. Of course, having a wizard for a human means that trouble is never far away.

When Sir Kipling's human goes away for the weekend and leaves him to guard her magical library, things start out quiet. But when he discovers a witch smelling suspiciously of demon magic snooping in his human's office, quiet goes out the window and chaos looms on the horizon. Will Sir Kipling be able to outwit the intruders before their mischief causes permanent damage?

If you are a cat person, you will adore this book. If you are a dog person, you will also adore this book, and upon completion will be inexplicably compelled to go out and adopt a cat. You have been warned.

I wrongly though I had listened to the first book as it had a very similar title but I was confused when it didnt mention the pov from the wonderful cat. This might been the 4.5 book but I definitely enjoyed it and didn't find myself missing crucial info from other books. I adore the pov from the cat and I think I'll need to look if the series has more books like it. Found it both extremely charming and with an exciting plot that kept med engaged to the very end

From the moment I first heard about this story I was excited about it and curious how the author would handle it. Cat Magic is a short story told from the point of view of Sir Kipling, the talking cat from this series. Sir Kipling is one of my favorite side character of the series. So I couldn't wait to read a whole novella written from his point of view. Although I also was slightly hesitant, as I was afraid it might not be as good as I had hoped or the story would be boring now we only got Kipling's point of view. Ofcourse I shouldn't have worried as it was great!

Given that Sir Kipling is only a cat I did wonder how the author would handle a story from his point of view. But Sir Kipling is far from a normal cat and with his smarts, Cat Magic and some allies he comes a long way. Who needs opposable thumbs when you have Cat Magic? The author managed to capture the feel of his character really well and it was delightful and so fun to read about Sir Kipling and see the world form his point of view. There is a whole lot of snark, cat magic and an adventure.

And the adventure is a good one. I might've worries his adventure would be something silly, but there was real danger and Sir Kipling managed to prevent bad things from happening. I also liked the more normal cat parts and cat behavior mixed in between the adventure. The whole anti dog inner monologue was a bit overdone, but that's only a small niggle. And it all did fit Sir Kipling's personality wonderfully.

I really like Sir Kipling and I feel like this novella made me like him more and it was just so fun to have a whole story told from his point of view and seeing how he handled everything. He was still very catlike in his behavior, but also was smart and capable on top of that, which was great. It also was fun to hear his thought regarding Lily and Sebastian and some other topics. And I liked how Sir Kipling met a new side character and how they worked together to stop the threat to the library.

I think the book takes place chronologically between book 4 and 5, but it can easily be read as a standalone or you can start the series here I think. The most important parts are explained, so I think it would also work as a fun introduction to this series. The plot line in this novella isn't fully resolved, but does have a satisfactory ending. And I am hoping we get to see what happens with the letter and if the bad guy returns. Guess we'll see in book 5 how/ if this ties in with the rest of the plot.

To summarize: If you want to get a look in the mind of a talking cat and go an pawsome adventure, this book is for you. It was such a fun read and I loved spending some time with Sir Kipling, who is one of my favorite side characters from this series. The author managed to capture his snarky personality perfectly even from his point of view, the adventure was fun to read about and also contained some danger and I liked how cat like, smart and capable Sir Kipling was. While part of the series, you can read it in order or start the series with this one. I am curious how/ if the plot point in this novella ties in with the next book.

Ok, let me explain myself...
I have this book and the actual first book in the series in my possession currently. From what I can tell this novella (actually 4.5 in the series) is one of maybe 2? novellas written in the cat's POV. But, it looks like all the other novels are from the wizard, Lily's POV.

I was intrigued first with the novella because of the POV. From what I can tell you don't really need to have read the others for this book to make since. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I also thought if I read the series opener first and didn't like it, there would be a slim chance I'd give the novella a chance. And, the novella - remember- was who I was really after.

So I did this first and eh, it was okay.
HOLD ON.
I thought the cat POV of Sir Edgar Allan Kipling was wonderful. I loved the way he described cats vs dogs and their complexes and tendencies. I thought Sir Kipling pawing glowing letters from a word bank to make sentences to a wizard he didn't belong to was adorable and his dialect was humorous. It's lovely.

But it wasn't much of a story, and I know it was a novella. I know that's the whole point, but it just wasn't a very 'on the edge of my seat' short story. I actually took a cat nap, with my cat, half way through the book. I did really like Sir Kipling, however, I'm now worried that he might not be as main a character as I hope he is in the actual story line. *paws crossed*

So, yeah, it was just okay for me. Not exactly a bad okay though, okay?
Now you can resume hating this review. K, thanks.

How can anyone not fall in love with Sir Edgar Allan Kipling. He is one seriously talented cat. His wizard Lily and her boyfriend Sabastian have their hands full trying to keep up with Sir Edgar. This is a fun and different kind of story. The story is told completely from Sir Edgar’s point of view. He sounds just as you would imagine a cat to sound. He is a total hoot. You will enjoy this story, it is funny and interesting and the end leads you to the next story. Looking forward to the next book.

Sir Edgar Allen Kipling is wizard Lily Singer’s cat, magically awakened and can talk to her (and only her) via telepathy. With Lily and her friend Sebastian away on a trip, Sir Kipling considers it his job to patrol and protect the basement library full of wizarding books at Lily’s college. He finds odd men lurking around the all-girl’s college, some with very dangerous powers.

This was a cute little spin off standalone story. I did have some questions at the end that will probably be answered in the main series (further than what I’ve read) (as in, we never did get the name of that wizard. Nor did we really answer who the villains were, especially the main villain. And I really would have liked to know how Sir Kipling got his telepathy with Lily. Maybe it’s covered in a book I haven’t read yet. He refers to it as his Awakening, but didn’t mention too much more than that). I did like all of Sir Kipling’s views on various people and his opinions. And I loved how it talked about Lily and Sebastian, introducing them to the readers. And I loved how sneaky he thought himself and his ego and I loved his names for various things (like Buzzsaw). And I loved how he dealt with the villains using cat methods, and yet had to show the normal humans (like Lily’s assistant) that he was a normal cat and that there wasn’t anything weird going on. I was a bit bored with the plot itself though. Since it was basically to protect the library from the bad guys, and really not much else happened (though the bad guys were indeed magically dangerous and not cartoonish villains). In all, it was a cute little read, with plenty of magic, and plenty of cat-isms and cat attitude.

Cute story w/ the protagonist's POV from a cat. VERY creative. From the details Ms. Sherrer has and loves cats. Very cute. Definitely children's lit. Interesting to learn that Ms. Sherrer's setting was Atlanta, Ga - my part of the country. Fun Fantasy!

Never disappointed

This story is as cute as Kip. Lydia never disappoints with her stories. I absolutely love the way she writes for Kip. I swear my cats say the same things sometimes...lol Kip is by far my favorite character and I do hope we get to hear more of his adventures. Thank you for the smiles, Kip ;-)
P.S. Luna would like to know if you are single ;-)

Very cute and quick read. Found this Author at the Lexington KY Comic Con where she introduced me to the book, and Book 1. She told me this book could be read as a stand alone, so it didn’t have to be in order. I enjoyed it and looking forward to reading the series.

Started this book around 6pm and finished around 1am. Just kept wanting to read it!

Love this cat

I love reading Lydia Sherrer's books. I devored this book in a matter of hours and wish it were longer. I love being in the world that she writes about and all the adventures that the characters go through. I can't wait to see what she dreams up next for Lily, Sebastian and Sir Kipling.

Since Kip is one of my favourite characters in the series, this was a must-read for me - and I was not disappointed. :) Fun, short read, and very "cat-y".
I would definitely like to read more stories from Kip's point of view!

Bonus points for Kip's ancient-wizard sidekick with his unexpectedly modern repertoire of colloquial German cuss words - you had me at Hackfresse. :D

Cats can do it all.

If you are into wizards, witch's, magic and cats, this might be a book for you. Or even a series of books. Sir Kipling is the cat that was assigned to help Lily Singer,a young magician. He keeps an eye on her and will get himself involved in almost everything she has to handle, even things that Lily has no knowledge of.
Give it a try.

Title:
In honor of Gizmo (RIP, Sweet Dreams Furbaby, RIP)

FYI: Warning Will Robinson -- snarky humor ahead!

{I m sorry, I ve read one book of this series, started a different book of this series. I can t keep helping with the misinformation: Wicca faith practitioners are called witch, plural are witches. Calling any practitioner a wizard and/or warlock is a major insult.}

We now return to regular review:

Sir Edgar Allan Kipling -the main character cat- in some ways are just like any other cat.. In other ways he s as far from normal as you can get. Watching how he reacts to various stimuli.

He does include the Cat Rules -in case there was any doubt - and proves that he has his human trained right. The Cat Rules: {The First Rule of Cat is simple: never beg. Ever. Cats do not ask, we tell.,
Second Rule of Cat: always give humans what they need, not what they want.}

Now if I could only find some beautiful young woman to pet me like Sir Kipling got petted. {Lucky Furball}!

Sir Kipling guards the library while his human how's on a trip. And like the proverbial mice, the witches came out, not to play, but rather to try to break into the magical archives in the lower level.

After one snake couldn t get in during the normal library hours. It slithered in after hours and showed that certain aspects of normal human lives -- cat magic really can be superior to normal magic.

Cat Magic is a beautiful yet all too brief return to the Lily Singer world. If you ever wondered what Sir Kipling gets up to when Lily is not around then this is the book for you!

It’s the same intelligent writing style as the main series but a little extra vocabulary and snark, as befitting a cat of Sir Kipling’s standing. His voice as the main contender is more than able to carry a book of his own. The story itself involves his adventures in McCain Library whilst Lily and Sebastian are out of town, and when Kip’s “Cat Magic” alerts him to things being amiss, he must investigate! If you wanted to know how Kip gets into the places he does, Cat Magic will give you all the answers.

As well as being a great piece, it also moves the main story forward, we have a frightening new big bad and a curious new guardian. There is also a sense that there are more things going on in the basement than Lily and Madame Barrington are letting on. It certainly lays a nice foundation for the way forward. Kips use of language in this one is brilliant, I love the fact that he says “for catnip’s sake” when he’s frustrated and his referral to the basement as the room of 1000 mischiefs. I also think every cat owner can attest to his prescription of Purr Therapy.

It is however, a read tinged with a little sadness as Lydia Sherrer recently announced the sad passing of her beloved cat who inspired Sir Kipling’s many adventures. It’s an extraordinary legacy that he has left though.

Cat Magic is a fantastic and exciting short read and a must for fans of the series, i’m also left wondering just how much Lily’s assistant Penny really knows….

Oh, I really enjoyed this story! Lol

Strangely, it was number 0.5 on my list, but was written down, here, as 4.5, so I guess I've read it in the wrong place.

But, seriously, I really didn't care, as this was a really fun, and very interesting story, to start off my reading of Lydia Sherrers' 'Love, Lies, and Hocus Pocus, series!

I absolutely fell in love with Sir Edgar Allan Kipling, the Cat Familiar to Lily Singer, Wizard.

In this story, he Introduces himself to us readers, and you couldn't have a more cat-like cat if you tried, with all their arrogance, pride, excellent hunting abilities, or their shrewdness, in knowing just when to fight, or give flight or, most crafty of all, when to turn into the lovable, purring, fluffs of fur that we Humans have been deceived by, ever since cats were worshipped as Gods! Lol

This was a great introduction to this new series, to me, so I'm going straight on, to read book 1 of this series: 'Beginnings', to see just what kind of mischief that Sir Kipling can bring to the Wizard, Lily Singer, and her Witch friend, Samuel.

Once I've read this, I'll catch you on the flip side, to let you know just what I thought of it though, if it's half as good as Cat Magic was, then I do believe I'm in for a real treat!

Lydia has done it again. From the snark of the author comes the snark of a cat, and not just any cat, but Sir Kip. This book is a standalone adventure in the "Love, Lies, and Hocus Pocus" (LLHP) world but it would be helpful to have read at least books one and two first. If only to get more backstory and not have too many spoilers for the series. For those that have read LLHP, you've already been introduced to Sir Kip and know of his antics and attitude. This book expands on that and truly lets you in on his thoughts and motivations in life. Additionally, other characters are introduced and will hopefully be revisited in future installments. Oh, lastly, try to not drink much of anything whilst reading. Trust me, hot tea burns when it comes out your nose from snorting at some of the humor in here.

Fun to Get to Know Sir Kipley

Ok, so the basic storyline was very good. I love the cat, Sir Kipley. The reason I gave this book 4 stars instead of 5 was because the pace at the beginning of the book was slow, too much inner dialogue and background for someone who has read the series. Also I found the ending incomplete due to unanswered questions. I want to know who the bad guy is and what he was after. Having read the series I believe I know who the good guy is, but someone who has not read the series may not be able to guess. Also, I was very disappointed we were not told what was in the letter. I dislike the ploy some authors use to keep readers coming back so they can get questions answered. A well written book by itself will bring readers back for more.

I love cat and dog stories…..so, I thoroughly enjoyed this short “book”. I haven’t read any of her other books (this was my first)….so, it took me awhile to become accustomed to her way of writing and the tempo. Plus it was from the cat’s point of view.
This book had everything I enjoy…..witches, wizards, cats, magick (not stage magician magic…REAL Magick), humor, evil doers doing evil deeds, no graphic sex, no graphic violence (well, the cat attacks an evil doer), no editing issues, and no cliffhanger endings. I look forward to the next book in my “to be read” stack.
So, curl up in a comfy chair with a cup of tea (or coffee if you prefer) and enjoy the story from Sir Kippling’s perspective.

Ms. Sherrer must speak cat because she knows just what a cat thinks. This is so cute and fun to read. It brought a smile to my face and I could not stop laughing. Sir Kipling is one special feline with his dry sense of humor he really is a cat extraordinaire. Just because his human has gone on a trip does not stop him from guarding the books and it was a good thing with the witches. He even kept Penny his human's helper busy with the mystery of the disappearing cat treats. This is the first book of Ms. Sherrer I have read, but will not be my last they are just too good not to read more. I did receive a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to review it.

I enjoyed reading this short story very much. Sir Kipling is a snobbish cat who decides to stand guard at a special library managed by his owner after she has left for a few days with a friend. Lily is a wizard and needs to protect her library from the evil. Sir Kipling is a magic and curious cat who wants to protect his human owner at all costs. The story is mainly based on his funny adventures, with a series of events in which he energetically chases and attacks witches together with an old wizard who has come to the library with the sole purpose to meet the old manager. The feeling while reading this story reminds me of tales of witches and enchanted worlds. An enchanting read.
