Last Things First shows how taking a realistic look at death can help you focus on life. How overcoming your natural fear about what happens then can encourage you to make better choices now. Here is what the Church teaches The "last things": death, judgement, heaven, and hell The Communion of Saints and prayers for -- and by -- the dead The resurrection of all bodies -- including yours and your loved ones. Understand the particulars about the sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick, about the Catholic funeral liturgy, about the transition between this temporal life, and the eternal life to come.
The book stresses an important concept: living your life with the end goal in mind; the end goal being eternal life with God in Heaven. While the concept is excellent, I found the book redundant. The table of contents looked very promising, but I don't think the book accomplished what was promised on the cover: "A comprehensive answer to... what comes after death?". The book covers the general judgment, particular judgment, and the fact that you will either go straight to Hell, straight to Heaven, or to Purgatory. It talks about what those "places" are, but it doesn't really talk about WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU DIE in the sense that I expected. I guess we really just don't know anything beyond those basic facts.
