Georgia Merkin-a magazine writer and self-sufficient divorcée with a young son-always adored her father, who was her buffer against her cold, fiercely ambitious mother, Dr. Estelle Merkin. When he dies of cancer, secret histories wash up in sorrow's wake-and Georgie must finally find the courage to confront her mother and their years of detachment and misunderstanding. Very slow story development. Skipped sections and never lost any part of the story

Intriguing story that kept my interest with the twists and turns that were unexpected.

Liked this a lot and I could relate to Georgie's cool relationship with her difficult mother.

One of the reasons I often read genre fiction instead of more literary fiction is because I like plot. I like plot A LOT. Not to say this doesn't have a plot, but it doesn't have the same rise and fall of action that I find most satisfying in leisure reading.

That being said, it's very well written and doesn't shy away from tackling difficult subject matter gracefully.

Quick beach read. Captured the jewish dialogue and lviing in the big city with a close knit family well. I understand bad relationships, but I didn't care for the unforgiving nature of the daughter with the mother in the book.

Obviously "what matters most" to this author is NOT character development or a plausible plot.

I did finish it, but it was depressing in that the girl had an abortion and her current boyfriend was more concerned about WHO the dad was than the fact that she lost the baby....signs of our times.

This book went from good to bad and than mediocre. I had a hard time getting through parts of it. It just didn't capture my full attention.

A story about family dynamics and how people deal with loosing a central figure in their lives. It was a nice read, but didn't wow me.
