Well, hello, Sugar, my name is Joanna…
That’s the introduction that all my victims get. It’s nice to be polite.
Even serial killers have manners.

I know what I do isn’t normal, but I also know that I do the country a service.
And the world is better off with me in it. You’ll understand.
See, I was once the victim.
Hurt by the one who should have taken care of me.
Let down by the system that should have protected me.
Now I vow to help others, and if I have to hurt people to do it. I will.

Saucy and Sinister Tale

I really liked this story! It was fast paced, well written and full of dark humor. "He's got a girlfriend, so meeting him once or twice a month worked well for us. That might sound wrong but I just stun gunned a guy in the nuts, so, whatever."

I read it all in one sitting and gave it 5 stars because it was edgy, always entertaining and dang it, I just love a saucy sociopath!

I will definitely read more from this talented author.

Woah, I was not expecting this book to resonate with me as much as it did. So many emotions with this book. I love the many twists and turns with this book. I really related to Joanna in the end of this book about just desserts. Really immersive piece of art. The speed of the storyline was nice and steady and it flowed superbly. This book physically hurt my heart at the end of it and the fact that there are helpful contacts at the back of the book filled my heart with love and gratitude. Excellent work!

One of the best short stories I've read this year.
Joanna has had a troubled past, but rather than dwell on it she seeks to make things better for others. As a vigilante/torturer she is unyielding, unforgiving, and as witty as hell.
As a young woman she is vulnerable, warmhearted, and dependable.
A fascinating story that sped by all too quickly.

This story is short and sweet. Death and torture are the order of the day. But there’s a powerful message in there… sometimes, by our actions we create our own monster, and sometimes they come back for us.

Definitely a 5-Star. Very dark fiction, exploring the sinister side of human nature. Thanks to an episode in her childhood, or rather a series of episodes, Joanna has turned a corner in her mind and set herself on a path that there is no turning back from.

Dark fiction normally concerns the murkier aspects of humanity, such as death, fear, and the evil side of human nature, but in Joanna’s case the world is clearly a much better place with her in it. This isn’t the first book by DM Wolfenden that I’ve read, and I must say that she has a talent for combining a gloomy, shadowy tone to her writing, with a sense of horror and dread.

So how is the world a better place with Joanna, a serial killer, in it? Because she chooses her targets, that’s how. Most serial killers prey on the innocent. Not Joanna, with the help of someone else – and you’ll have to read the book to find out who exactly this is, as well as a few more of Joanna’s secrets – Joanna preys on the guilty.

Vigilantism is frowned upon nowadays, but in the Deep South and the Old West of America, where there were no law enforcement agencies, no courts, no local jails or prisons, and vast open spaces to which perpetrators could disappear from their victims, I’m sure people could be forgiven for taking the law into their own hands. Lynchings were common.

Well, allow me to ask a question, if you went to jail for your thoughts and not your deeds, have there ever been any moments in your life when you’d have found yourself banged up? And whenever you think about, say, the red-bereted Guardian Angels, making the New York subway system safer at night, doesn’t it give you a good feeling to realise that there are people out there willing to risk their own safety to keep you safe?

Well, we can’t have lynch mobs roaming around nowadays. Overzealous people might make the wrong decision. But, in the world of fiction, I think it’s great there are people like Joanna.

….. oh, you haven’t read the book yet. Well, what’s wrong with you? Buy it immediately. You won’t regret it.

This is not a short, short story |I think they class it as a Novella, and its not for the fainthearted. You see, Joanna is a serial killer. And she enjoys what she does. After all, she has a damn good reason for doing what she does.
And all her victims are people who don’t care about hurting others, rapists, paedophiles, you name it.

We join Joanna as she interrogates a man who has kidnapped a child, can she get in information from him in time to save the child’s life?

With twists and turns and surprises galore I loved this one. Her humour is great and it takes the edge of the brutality.
If you like strong women and don’t mind a bit of torture then you won’t be disappointed.

4.5/5 Sugar.

The past and the present come together perfectly in this dark, gritty, intense tale that will make you hold your breath with each page. A courageous woman on a war of retribution... Interesting twists that will bring a smile to your face. It is short but fully satisfying

This is a very short and bitter little story. A little horror, a little social comment, and a little angry rant. An ex police woman is taking crime fighting into her own hands with some very questionable methods. Leaves you with the question 'do the ends justify the means'.

4.5/5. A nice little tale that involves torture and revenge. Pretty simple concept, but hard to capture unless you have the right motive. Meet Joanna, who along with her foodie sidekick mother, has just that. So come on, Sugar. What are you waiting for?

Abruptly ended the story before it begun. Just as the characters were introduced it ended. Shame

“Well, hello, Sugar, my name is Joanna...”

Joanna is the ultimate bad ass. Sure, she’s a serial killer, but our girl has her reasons. She doesn’t just go out and kill at will. She only kills the worst of the worst – child molesters, rapists. On one hand, you know what Joanna is doing is wrong. On the other, you might find yourself cheering her on as she takes out these horrible men one by one.

Be prepared. Joanna’s methods are quite brutal and may bother some.

An excellent book.
