Mrs. Brown-Tyson eloquently takes the reader through her personal bout with depression. Her depression was brought upon by multiple lay-offs. She didn’t let the depression become her however. Mrs. Brown-Tyson rose to the occasion in pushing towards the high mark of the calling. She shares with the reader how she did that by taking them on a 21 day journey in refreshing their mind and Spirit. She does this through her Grateful, Listening, Observation, and Witness (G.L.O.W.) Framework.
The book was ahead of its time in a sense given that it was released in 2018. Notwithstanding there is no time like the present. I say this because so many people are unemployed as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. What’s more, over 500,000 [and counting] Americans have passed away as a result of the pandemic. Given those sentiments, it’s easy to infer that depression and anxieties are high right now. Mrs. Brown-Tyson’s literary offering helps to offset that in a sense. She does not prescribe to have all of the answers but she has 21 of them. This book in itself is excellent reading material for the times that are now upon us. Please do yourself a favor and take the 21 day journey. I promise that you won’t be sorry.
I lost my job around the time I had the opportunity to read this book. The author takes you through a day by day journey through her own layoff and gives you words of inspiration, scripture references, and prayers to take with you each day. It's a book that to truly obtain a sense of renewal that the book describes you must take action each day that is described in the book. It may be a fast read but in reality, taking it one day at a time, it's the perfect length.
Losing your job isn't easy but Karen's book helps you get a better outlook and see it as an opportunity, not just a loss.
I was recently laid off from a job. It was an unexpected and unfair. Naturally I wanted to turn to God for guidance. I searched, what scripture to read after being laid off and this book came up. It was so specific that I had to get it. Then the first required scripture was Psalms 23 - my mom's favorite scripture that's own her headstone. I knew this was God sent. Before I did anything, I read this daily devotional and scripture and prayed. 21 days later, I feel like I need to rest and have faith that things will work out how they're supposed to.

My Review
Time to Refresh by Karen Brown Tyson is a 21 Day devotional that was written as a result of being laid off from a position Karen loved. As she struggled to make sense of it, she came to God for understanding. Time to Refresh has clear guidelines that allow us to take a daily journey with God as you recover your balance and focus. We all face challenges in our lives and this devotional can help you face those challenges or timeouts. Each day begins with a note from Karen, with her thoughts and prayers. She quotes bible verses and uses the stories in them to provide “Timeout Takeaways”. She then uses the G.L.O.W. Method to further delve into one’s relationship with God. I have been sidelined the past two years, as I have put my husband’s health issues front and centre, thus putting my writing and art on the back burner. I decided to not only read Karen’s book, but follow the advice each day, with journaling, prayer and reading scripture. Listing what I was grateful for each day was a wonderful way to start the day. I felt a renewed connection with God, one I had pushed back the last few years. This is a very practical, but powerful book, one where Karen is with us along on this journey to find a new path, as we emerge from our own timeout. Time to Refresh certainly will transform you. Thank you Karen for your very special book.
