While reviewing books here at Goodreads, I found that for anthologies and co-authored books, the editor or the first author is credited in the books page leaving the others. Here I am trying to set the record straight by mentioning the author Khyrunnisa A. who is an Indian author of children's fiction, speaker, academic and a columnist, and the one who created the comic book character Butterfingers.
Ooops… It’s Butterfingers is another book that was published under the aegis of Tinkle a beloved Indian fortnightly magazine for children published continuously in India from 1980. Tinkle has been from the India Book House stable but in the last couple of decades has found its way into the ACK Amar Chitra Katha(Amar Chitra Katha) stable which has on its own for decades held the flag up for Indian comics along with Pran.
In the last few years Tinkle has under ACK become a comic book stable with several loved characters like Suppandi and Shikari Shambu that were created in the early years of the magazine have nationwide recognition among all age groups. India's famous Uncle Pai (Anant Pai the founder of ACK was the editor for Tinkle from its inception in 1980.
This book as the name suggests is about a kid who has what else - Butterfingers. A clumsy boy named Amar who is chidingly called "Butterfingers" by his parents, friends and teachers. He is chided for his sloppiness and laziness, but is a happy-go-lucky character who also has a presence of mind and manages to save the day despite messing up trivial stuff.
This book is a series of adventures or rather misadventures for our titular character and his friends from school. And like most comics Amar aka Butterfingers saves the day or creates an unusual situation that devolves into one where he turns a surprising savior.
The stories are all hilarious and clean fun and the shorts are written with great humor and the artwork by Abhijeet Kini, the illustrator behind Butterfingers who first put the character on paper as a Gangly Amar with his shock of unruly hair and slightly crumpled clothes that has charmed readers of all ages with his antics over the years. A laugh is always lurking somewhere and that joy comes through in the illustrations. Tinkle has always been a favorite comic for most of us.
