Basically abandoned (rich folkstyle) by her parents at age 14, Jacinta has been taken care of by her brother Jagger since. Any sense of security and the only love she's really known is because of him. Now she's a recent college grad who just caught her boyfriend of 3 years in bed with another woman. With no other options, she moves into her empty childhood home until she can find a new job and a place of her own. Turns out that the house next door is owned by 4 of her brother's former classmates; Sebastian, Caleb, Ethan, and Judson. Four best friends, all gorgeous and all busy trying to find success in their various fields. Because of their busy lives, they have always looked for one woman; one woman to share, one woman to dote on, one woman to love. They immediately recognized Jace as their woman but her past won't allow her to believe or accept their love easily. It becomes more complicated when her ex becomes a problem. These guys are prepared to keep her safe, prove that it can work, prove that it can be perfect.

Fighting the Odds is an insta-love RH with more than a touch of drama. It's a fun read, one of those books that's easy to escape into. The characters are all very likable, the story entertaining. And even though Jace has some rough moments from her childhood on and it's not all smooth sailing, it's not at all dark or depressing. There's more of a rom-com feel to the book than a drama so it never gets weighed down. The writing becomes stronger as the story progresses, almost as if the author becomes more confident of her ability. Honestly, it never even matters because the story flows so smoothly and the guys are all so perfect, including her brother that you are completely caught up in the relationships and romance. I did love the POV aspect. Most chapters are from Jace's POV but the guys are all sprinkled throughout. It gave us a firsthand glance into their love and affection and this is what works best. The guys' unwavering adoration for Jace is the strongest aspect of this book as far as I'm concerned. The way they were steadfast in their feelings, generous with their attention, and pampered her from the beginning is a fantasy come true. Isn't there a part in all of us that wants to be spoiled? Multiply this by 4 and you have Jace's HEA. I wouldn't mind more from this family including Jagger and Faith. Maybe a follow-up in a few more years, build on that final scene...

Let me start off by saying this is a Reverse Harem. It’s not a genre that I typically read, but I thought I’d give it a shot. And I can honestly say I was NOT disappointed. Well, only slightly, but that’s because I went in expecting open door sex scenes and they are closed door. I’m not going to say the book was perfect, but I will say that I absolutely could NOT put the book down.

After discovering her boyfriend cheating on her, Jacinta is forced to accept help from a woman who for all intents and purposes seems to hate her. She had no clue what she was in for when she moved back into her childhood home. Or the lengths her ex-boyfriend would go to keep her in his life. Can the four sexy guys next door fight the odds and restore her faith in love? Or is she as unlovable as she believes?

There you have it. The story in an instant. Based on that information alone, it isn’t hard to see where the story will go. But before I get into the nitty gritty, this is your only warning that SPOILERS are AHEAD. Continue reading at your own risk.

As I said before, I LOVED this book. Despite the fact that it was slightly flawed, the main character Jacinta was perfectly relatable, the harem was hot, and I was completely enthralled by the story. That in and of itself is a plus in my book. There are some stories that, minus flaws, you simply cannot get through. And then there are stories like this one that, flaws and all, you have to keep reading just to see what happens next.

We jump right into a scene between Jacinta and her mother. At this point, we don’t yet know why she’s moving, just that she is. Unless of course you read the synopsis. Reminder of the cheating boyfriend is given fairly quickly though. What I liked most about the opening is that we get an immediate sense of Jacinta’s family dynamics: meddling mother, absentee father, and loving brother. More about how this came about is revealed throughout the story. Plus by the end of the first chapter, we get a clear sense that Jacinta is a fighter. However we don’t see this until about a quarter of the way through the novel.

And to close the chapter out, two of Jacinta’s love interests are introduced. This is one of the flaws I mentioned. Most of the novel is told from Jacinta’s POV. There are places where her love interests POVs are littered throughout the novel. I would’ve actually liked to see more from their POV, only because I get the sense we might get to understand these guys better. It would’ve been nice to see more through their eyes instead of just how Jacinta sees them.

This leads me to a second flaw, yet relatable family dynamic. In the first chapter, we meet Jacinta’s older brother Jag, who has pretty much taken care of her for most of her life. He’s overprotective and slightly overbearing. I understand this type of relationship because I’ve similar moments with my own siblings. That really didn’t present a problem to me. The only time I really felt this became an issue was when it seemed Jag took over the scene and it happened a couple of times. In the beginning, it was a little annoying, but eventually I realized, it’s the character. Jag has a way of taking over. This is really noticeable in the third chapter, where Jacinta, her four love interests (Caleb, Sebastian, Judson, and Ethan), and Jag are all having dessert. Some conversation occurs between Jacinta and the guys, then Judson inquires about Jag’s life. And it goes from Jacinta getting to know the guys to Jag and the guys playing catch-up with Jacinta as the sixth wheel.

In case I haven’t said it, Jacinta works for her ex-boyfriend. We know he cheated on her, which makes him a douche-bag in my book. His actions in trying to make it seem like she did something wrong in her work make him a double douche-bag. I kind of wanted to slap the shit out of him. And really wished later Jag had kicked his ass. The guy deserved it! And more. Though Jacinta does give him a what-for later on in the book. I don’t want to spoil too much, just know I was rooting her on when she did it.

As for the guys: Sebastian, Judson, Caleb, and Ethan, I said earlier that when they’re all with Jag, Jag can kind of take over a scene. The scene that follows the aforementioned scene is a scene where we truly get our first sense of the guys and Jag falls to the background.

“The swish of balls rolling down the lane and pins crashing on impact echo through the building. After we check out our shoes and find our assigned lanes, we settle into our area. I inspect a few bowling balls, find a sparkly blue one, and bring it back to the lane.

Judson opens a bag I didn’t notice he carried when we came inside. He pulls out a brown-marble colored ball. Then, he pulls out a matching pair of shoes. I stare at him, mouth open.

The rest of the guys chuckle, and Judson glances up at the sound. ‘What? I like to bowl. I was in a league awhile back.’”

This. Was. Adorable! Judson is supposed to be this giant of a guy and he bowls. I LOVED it! There were actually a LOT of things I loved about this scene. In fact, some of my favorite lines come from it.

“‘Thank you. What else could I say? What am I going to do? Call sexual harassment on an eighty-year-old lady? I’m glad I could make her day.’” (For the record, this little old lady pinched Dr. Sebastian’s ass. Yes, this made me giggle.)

“Stopping in my tracks, I turn towards him [Trevor] again. ‘If you call me anything other than my name one more time, I will drop you.’” (This was awesome! I didn’t know yet that Jacinta had taken MMA classes, but this line alone, I screamed, “Yeah!” And for the record, Trevor called her a bitch.)

“‘But, nothing. This is what I wear to work out in, and you have no say about it.’ I poke his [Caleb] chest. ‘And if you have a problem with that, then try to stop me.’” (Another awesome moment where Jacinta stands up for herself. I was totally cheering her on! I’d share the whole scene, but honestly you just have to read it for yourself.)

“‘Doesn’t matter. I still have to train. I’ll just ignore them.’ I snap my fingers, raising my eyebrows. ‘Or kick one of their asses.’” (More snarkiness! I love it! All because all four guys showed up and glowered at her during her work out. I promise, this was a funny scene.)

By now I think you get the picture. Yes, there are some flaws and things the author could’ve done differently. Yet with the humor, character strength we see develop in Jacinta, and the suspense of what happens next, it is impossible not to KEEP READING until the very end. Before I give my overall rating, I’m going to leave you with one more scene. Because it has to get worse before it can get better, right?

“Trevor must lurch toward me again because Caleb steps in front of me also.

‘Move out of the way, she’s coming home with me,’ he slurs again. ‘I’m not going anyplace without her.’

I cross my arms and slide between Judson and Sebastian to stand in front of Trevor. The tow truck pulls up and drives down the block. He moves around and parks in front of Trevor’s car. Judson holds up his hand, and the two driver sits, waiting for further instruction.

‘Trevor, take the help and go home.’ I sigh.

I’ve had enough of this whole situation. It’s time for him to leave.

He sways and puts his hands out to balance himself before reaching for me again. He grabs my elbow, and I latch onto his arm, sweeping my foot on the back of legs, making him fall to the ground.

I put my bare foot in his neck, pressing down. ‘Take the help and go home.’”

And that is only the beginning of it getting worse. Yep, that’s right. Trevor doesn’t exactly take the hint. But on that I will say no more. Just that all that happened makes the book worth the read.

With that said, my overall rating is 4.5 stars!

As a general rule I'm a fan of the RH genre, and if you read enough of them you easily recognize the standard pattern. With Fighting the Odds all of the boxes of the typical RH formula are checked:
- Damaged/unloved MC - check.
- Major event that tears apart MC's life and leaves MC with nowhere to go - check.
- Deranged villain threatening the life and wellness of the MC - check.
- 3+ seemingly perfect men who have the resources to save the day and don't mind sharing - check.
Even still, I have to say K Williams did a good job of developing an original backstory for the MC to explain all of the cliched circumstances; it was certainly something I've not read before and as such I'd give the plot a solid 3.5 stars.

Unfortunately, I didn't really feel the chemistry between the characters, despite frequent references to the electric current passing between them on contact. Many of the scenes used to demonstrate the MC's awesome affection/protectiveness of the guys were, for me, at best awkward and at worst an indication of almost abusive control. The guys were not particularly memorable and their voices were not distinct enough to differentiate between their POV chapters. I read the story 2 days ago and already can't remember all of their names. That lack of character impact and lack of chemistry drops this one down to 2 stars. As Goodreads defines it, "it was ok".

Last side note - it should be a really minor thing, but I found myself very distracted with the un-addressed back story of the guys and their money. With no indication of a significant inheritance how can these 4 guys afford a McMansion, a new SUV at the drop of a hat, private security, a spur of the moment group trip to Florida, etc.? Yeah, they all have respectable jobs, but if they're the same age as Jag then the lawyers are -1 year- out of law school and have started their own firm, so you know their liquid assets are tapped out unless someone has a trust fund. The doctor *just* graduated and would be in the very first year of his residency, which not only means he's making practically no money, but he also would not have anywhere near the schedule flexibility depicted. The only one who is believable as the financer is the mechanic, who has had 4 years since undergrad to build up his business, but with all the branches he's opened in that time I can't imagine he's very liquid either. Now, we were told that Jag and Jace have trust funds, and these guys went to the same high school, so maybe it's just supposed to be assumed that they also had trust funds? I just wish it was addressed so I wasn't wondering about it every time they made a purchase or took time off work.

My library just got a few RH titles on Libby and I was so excited to check them out! I don't usually read contemporary RH--I have a hard time accepting the lack of conversations that would usually happen in such a setting-- but this one looked interesting. I found that I simultaneously couldn't stop reading it, but I also wasn't particularly wowed. The book is quick, compelling, and full of drama which made for an enjoyable reading experience. However, the guys all felt a little too interchangeable and I just wanted them to have some time to work everything out. With as much drama as there was, there wasn't a lot of time for figuring things out like each individual relationship. The guys came as a unit and had all their rules already in place, then they asked her to join. We see her build a relationship with the GROUP, not each man, and I found that troubling.

The physical side of the romance is also very slim here, what with everything that goes on in terms of drama. It's mentioned that there are kisses here and there as well as the rotating sleeping arrangements, but that's it. No sexy times until about 75+%. And when it does happen, it is brief (like 3 sentences each time) and a little jarring to be honest. Also, no one really has an issue with their relationship, which would totally happen in real life. Her brother knew them in high school so he already knew that's what was happening before she did. And the guys' parents all just want to meet her to approve of her, not the relationship, which is very unrealistic. I really liked the story's concept--I just wish there was more development overall.

Tropes/red flags: contemporary reverse harem; post-college graduation setting; recently cheated on female meets 4 financially successful males (1 doctor, 2 lawyers, 1 mechanic who owns his own businesses); slow burn--very little sexy times and very sudden when the scenes do happen; female has extreme parental neglect and is supported by her brother; mentions of cheating and infidelity (not among the RH); stalking, characters in peril, continued threats, attempted kidnapping and murder; miscarriage; therapy sessions; parental gaslighting and manipulation.

Heat rating: MEDIUM—no explicit descriptions and a lot of vague scenes; fades to black or quick paragraphs; more of a focus on feelings/emotions rather than body parts.

This book is a contemporary RH with several plot points that have become quite common in RH stories. I don't mind seeing those commonalities and I can be ok with a book being predictable but unfortunately the biggest issue I had is that I was never drawn to any of the main characters or the romance. The heroine and heroes are immediately enamored of each other and we are told they feel instant electricity but I never felt that connection or heat as the reader, even after they started spending time together. I never fully warmed up to the heroine (Jacinta or "Jace") and I also did not get a good sense of the heroes as individuals apart from their professions. The character I liked the best in the book was the heroine's brother, Jag.
Somehow the relationship between the harem and Jace didn't feel all that different from what she had with her protective brother, and while that made for a nice, close relationship between Jace and Jag, it made the romantic relationships feel like they were lacking. I like contemporary RH a lot in general but unfortunately this one just didn't work for me.

Meh I felt kinda numb all the way through this book. It took me a long time to figure what was wrong then I realised the fmc has no effin' personality! I mean we had maybe two or three scenes throughout the entire book where she shows her character but other than that she's just kinda there a cardboard cut out. I mean her brother lies to her about her biological parents, no reaction, she's suddenly kissing 4 guys at the same time with no conversation about it no reaction. 4 adult attractive guys randomly living together no reaction, no questions. This was such a weird contemporary book the relationship with the guys was waaaay too easy everything seemed to just immediately fall into place. I dunno maybe it was me but I struggled to connect to these characters they just didn't feel real.

First off.. I'm not a fan of the whole insta love thing in RH. I find it a bit ridiculous and frankly just plain annoying. That said being said, I had a hard time getting into the plot when 3 seconds after the MC meets her guys they are all tripping over themselves to make her theirs. The character development fell a little flat for me and the guys POVs all seem like the same voice. Fighting the Odds had a decent back story for the MC, and it was cute story. I just have a hard time with the multiple guys all love at first sighting over a girl. I'm a slow burn kind of girl, I want that relationship development.

I will say this, if you want a quick, sweet contemporary RH read then this book fits the bill. If you are starting out in the RH world this book is a good choice to go with. I just could not get into this book, unfortunately. I wasn't able to connect with any of the characters. The storyline was pretty cookie cutter to me. I find it difficult to suspend my disbelief with Insta-love stories. My issues with the book have more to do with personal taste then anything so I wouldn't dismiss the book completely if it is your style.

Oh boy! This is a superb read. I absolutely adore the storyline, Jacintas life has been far from easy and she has not known much love and affection. After splitting with her boyfriend she moves into her parents home where she meets for sexy men who want to get to know her

I absolutely love the relationship between Jace and her brother, it’s so loving that I want to be Jacinta, and sexy men next door all have different but wonderful personalities. I thought this book was well written, with the plenty of drama and romance, I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book and could not put it down

Where is the trigger warning? You cannot put miscarriage in a book without a trigger warning it is very rude and disrespectful of the author not to warn me and others when this is a mjor trigger for readers. The girl was a huge pushover who was boring. Who keeps working for their ex have some self respect and quit. She leaves him the apartment which again no he cheats he leaves. She does not report ex to HR after he calls her names and worse this just makes her a weak pushover. The guys were great but even they could mot make up for a boring weak heroine.

The story line was good and well thought out if not original. I had a hard time enjoying this book due to the amount of internal debating of the main character and the constant professions of love and devotion by the love interests. The ending also feels very rushed after how slow the beginning was. The intimate scenes are sort of awkward as well. Not an awful read but not something I would read again.

What a fabulous love story!!

K. Williams had me hooked as quick as Sebastian with this fantastic tale!  All the characters are great as we are wrapped up in all the drama, love, angst, danger and wonder as we follow the MC through her discovery of herself as she encounters one thing after another.  I loved the occasional change in POV to provide better understanding from everyone. While many books tend to end abruptly, I was pleased to see a well rounded full closure on this one.

Sweet story

This is a romance story that's about the characters and not the bedroom.
Having said that, it was sweet but shallow. There was a lot of depth to these potential relationships and I found the lack of interaction between the men who are supposedly best friends since childhood, saddening.

I was honestly skeptical when o read the synopsis of this thinking oh another one of these stories BUT I am so glad I read it anyways. I LOVED it! I thought the writting was believable and captivating. I loved the characters personalities. The story line even though has been done before was still suspensful and exciting. I look forward to reading more from this author.

Would never recommend

I’m sadly disappointed that I paid money for this book. The premise was so good. The execution horrible and the writing worse. I felt like I was reading a high school English book report. The female MC seemed weak and the male MCs were too smothering. By chapter 16 I was done. I want my money back.

A decent tale of love, trust and betrayal, K Williams has written a moving and generally consistent novel.
**Trigger warning for miscarriages and guns **
I recommend readers to push through the stifling beginning, as the writing becomes more forgiving at it goes.

I loved the characters in this. It was a easy read, but had an emotional rollercoaster through the whole book. Between cheating ex, neglectful parents, and a stalker, it definitely broke your heart. Over all it was a good story.
