Hi there! I am a writer of gay furry fiction--but you probably know that if you've seen my book listing here. I live in California with my husband Kit, and when I'm not writing, we like to go out to eat and watch movies. We travel a lot, too, mostly around the West Coast, but occasionally to the midwest and east.

I blog at http://www.kyellgold.com/wpblog about upcoming travel plans, upcoming books and news, general writing principles, gay rights, and whatever else seems interesting. And I co-host a podcast, called "Unsheathed," where we talk about the craft of writing and the furry fandom, sometimes at the same time.

If you have a question about any of the books, check the FAQ on my website and then ask away! :)

This is more than a collection of stories, this is a window into the minds of each of the characters depicted in the stories. Having read Out of Position through Over Time (and before Titles and Ty Game), it provides the context for me to appreciate each of these stories and the depth of emotion contained in them. It is such an insight into how some of the support characters think, and elevates them into something more than a support role. I particularly enjoyed Coach Samuelson's story - someone we know little about from OOP but who plays such an important role in Dev's life.

I feel like each of the stories is packed with enough emotion to fill a novella, but Kyell Gold manages to do it in just 20 pages. Some of the most dramatic and heart-wrenching moments of OOP came out of these stories. In Brenly's story, Eileen says to Brenly (referring to Lee),

Argonne's story completely transformed the way I view him as a character.

Gerrard's story reiterates his transactional nature and obsession with winning a championship. But we get to hear it from his perspective, and that somehow makes it seem so much more important. I also noticed and appreciate the easter egg of Gold's signature in the football Gerrard is holding in the opening sketch.

Speaking of sketches - Kenket did such an amazing job on all of these illustrations. The emotion and facial expressions captured are second to none. They help me picture each story and I am truly awestruck by her talent.

I think what I liked most about Tales of the Firebirds was seeing Dev and Lee's world through the lens of so many other people. Each has their own view, and Kyell Gold does such a fantastic job of describing the individuality in each one. In particular, Hal's story where he describes Lee watching the football game. It totally changes my image of Lee in my head. I just really appreciate the different views and haven't really seen this so well done before.

Enough gushing. This collection of stories if fantastic. Read it. But not before you read OOP through Over Time. The history and context of the characters is necessary to appreciate the condensed emotion contained in these short stories.

Author Kyell Gold assures this collection of short stories set in the universe of his Out of Position / Dev and Lee books is enjoyable without first reading them.

“Off the Cuff” – The fox Lee talks about a sexual encounter with an otter masquerading as a policeman.

“The Wallet Story” – A look into the life of the tiger Dev before the Out of Position books.

“Halftime Entertainment” – Gold notes this wasn’t originally an Out of Position story, and it looks into the footballer Jay Cornwall.

“Blessed” – Gold describes the story’s narrator Colin Smith as a “villain” in the universe of his series, although he’s far from a bad person, given his Christian faith.

“Sinful” – Narrated by Colin’s wife Penny, who is somewhat less chaste than her husband and has an interest in fornication.

“Slowing Down” – Focuses on one of Dev’s coaches, Coach Samuelson, parallel to the novels.

“False Dawn” – Focuses on the life of Lee when he was with his former spotted skunk boyfriend Brian.

“Heart” – Focuses on the journalist Hal and delves into how he formulates his sports stories.

“Getting to Sleep” – Lee’s father Brenly describes how sleep can be elusive for some.

“Rest Stop” – Trucker Argonne is interested in sexual activity.

“More Than a Game” – Gerrard wants financial security for his family.

“Contents Under Pressure” – I think Kodi is a bear, might be an athlete.

All in all, fans of the novels will enjoy this collection, although one can find difficult keeping track of the species of the various characters, and it is a bit inaccessible to those unfamiliar with the characters of the Out of Position books.

This is an interesting read, best enjoyed after reading the Dev and Lee books; it gives background on some of the characters (some quite minor, but interesting, like Argonne) Again, lots of football terminology, which doesn't get in the day of the story; once again, it feels like the author has researched professional sports in depth or been an athlete himself. It goes without swaying that the stories contain adult themes, some relatable to our world, some possible only in a world of anthropomorphic animals.
