Love on Her Own Terms

Rate this book
Kathleen is Boston born and bred, with a degree from the Boston Conservatory of Music. On her 18th birthday, her parents announce that she has been betrothed to a longtime friend--one she has always known as Uncle Elias. She ponders that fate, but not until she finds out that the betrothal was actually a deal struck in order to save her father's ailing business! As a bold response, she answers a Mail-Order Bride ad for one Dan Gallagher, a ranch owner in Tombstone, Arizona Territory, without knowing what future awaits her...

After his late father left it behind, Dan Gallagher struggles to keep the ranch alive, which seems like a difficult feat. His hardships with his brother, and his loneliness lead him to send for a mail order bride, with the expectation to fill his otherwise empty life. He hasn't even seen her, nor has she, which makes it even more difficult for them to meet...

Her adventure begins when she leaves Boston, but as it unfolds, she starts to wonder who was the mysterious gentleman she met on the train station. Was it the real Dan Gallagher? Despite the way they meet and all the duplicity around her, who will save whom and, most importantly, will she find love on her own terms?

"Love on Her Own Terms" is a historical western romance novel of approximately 80,000 words. No cheating, no cliffhangers, and a guaranteed happily ever after.

I'm in the it-just-didn't-make-sense camp on this book. I was with the story when Kathleen/Kaitlin decided to become a mail order bride rather than marry the man old enough to be her grandfather because of a debt her parents owed. After all, a story has to start somewhere and I thought this premise worked.

But things started falling apart when she married the wrong brother. After being so independent, why did she sign the marriage license?

I stopped reading after she married Dan, the brother who had placed the matrimonial ad to begin with. I could buy into his rescue of her from his brother and his assistance in getting that marriage annulled. I liked that she easily became a part of the household, helping Lupe prepare meals for the ranch hands despite her upper class background.

But Dan seems to get cold feet about moving forward with the wedding, and Kathleen has her own doubts. But she wants to get married, although she doesn't know why. Then Dan tells her it's because she wants to feel safe and protected.

And then there's a big jump to where they are married, but he leaves her alone in his room on their wedding night, she waits for two hours before going to sleep, and he immediately takes off for a few days. It's as if there's a chapter missing where they talk to one another and let the reader know why they're going to get married after all. As it stands, I couldn't understand why Dan couldn't have protected Kathleen while she stayed as a member of the household helping Lupe.

I tried to struggle through this section, but in my opinion, the book just got worse and more unbelievable, so I stopped reading it.

A sweet western romance with an imaginative and convoluted plot. The heroine is impulsive, the hero is strong, silent and conflicted, and the bad guys are obnoxious. I enjoyed the book.

ROOTIN' TOOTIN' COWBOYS!!!
Talk about running headlong into trouble. Wow! This is definitely a delightful tale taking place in the old West. I could tell you all about the story. I could tell you how great of a read it is. I could even tell you how adventurous and exciting it is. But come on guys. You've read the blurb, you know what the others readers are saying. You know the score, but because I'm me I'm running this show. Just kidding, there's no show. If you're looking for an action packed, fast paced, nailbiting, smooth flowing read that captivates from the start and holds your attention until the last word. Congratulations my friends, you've found it. One intriguing tale with such depths that only when you start peeling the layers back do you understand just how potent this bad boy is. The characters are well developed and believable. Their personalities are strong willed, bold and individual with traits that balance out perfectly. The two main characters have a solid connection and chemistry that only grows as the tale unfolds. The secondary characters are such a variation that they blend well and support the main characters in one form or another. The scenes are vividly detailed and descriptive it paints a fantastic backdrop that really makes the storyline pop. With all the twists and turns, ups and downs, all the deceit, lies, backstabbing, betrayal it keeps you on edge until the end. The main characters are caught up in a power play they have no chance of winning if they aren't dealt the right hand. You have all the drama, suspense and danger that keeps your eyes focused on this page turning bombshell. You get so caught up flipping page after page until you're looking at the final page in no time at all. I enjoyed witnessing the characters growth and action as they meet each obstacle and hurdle. Carol did an incredible job bringing this read to life flawlessly. Fantastic job Carol, thanks for sharing this awesome read with us.

A recent graduate from the Boston Conservatory, Kathleen, has dreams of touring Europe with her friend Siobhan. On her 18th birthday her parents inform her she is to be married to her fathers 50 yr old business partner! Once the shock wears off and before she realizes it’s because her father is broke she decides she can’t do it. So her and her friend try to find a way out for her by looking at ads for governesses, nanny jobs etc. when she comesing across an ad from a lonely Arizona rancher looks for a campanion/ wife. When she answers the ad and he sends her money for the next train out her adventure of a lifetime begins. After she faces danger, drama and a whole new life. She discovers she’s not the same girl that left Boston! I really really enjoyed this book. It’s not as predictable as some of the mail order bride westerns I read before. I hope this is the start of a great series. I highly recommend this book and this author!

Excellent book

I received a free copy of this book and this is my voluntary and honest review. This is the first book by Carol Colyer that I have read and it won't be my last. I love stories about mail order brides going west to meet their future husbands based only on correspondence. This one had a twist near the beginning when Kathleen of Boston finally got off the train at her destination in Arizona. It made the story more exciting and hard to put down wondering if she would finally end up with the correct guy. I like that there was no cliffhanger, but knowing that there are several characters in this book that could have their own storylines. There is an extended epilogue that is free that is also great to read and completes this story even more. I highly recommend this book of good clean romance.

"Love on Her Own Terms" by Carol Colyer
Oh, my what an adventure... from cover to cover. If you are reading this review, then you read the blurb and are trying to decide if you really want to read this story. Well, I vote yes to reading this story. In my opinion.. and since this is my review... who else's opinion would it be? If you like clean sweet Western Romance with lots of adventures for the stars of the tale then I will expect you to enjoy your time with this story as much as I did mine. You definitely will want to keep turning those pages to see what happens next. Oh, I was gifted a copy of this story and what a good gift it was. I thank the giver of this gift.

Kathleen O'Shea is Boston born and bred. She is very talented musically and is able to study at the Boston Conservatory of Music. What she does not know is that her parents allowed a much older man to pay for her schooling as well as their debts if they will betroth her to him. She finds this out after she graduates the Conservatory. She is disgusted with the whole idea and the fact that no-one told her the truth of the circumstance. She and her best friend, Siobhan, find a Mail Order Bride advertisement and she decides to answer it an run away.
She goes to Tombstone, Arizona to meet her fiance, Dan, but is tricked into marrying the fiance's brother. A long road ensues in order to have Kathleen's marriage annulled so she can marry her original fiancee and start a life with him.

This was an interesting book. Wyatt Earp, the Earp brothers, Josephine Earp (nee Behan in this novel), are friends of Dan and Josephine becomes a fast friend of Kathleen. It was fun to imagine them as real people doing real things and helping their friends.
I found the descriptions of daily activity and the area to be very good - it wasn't hard for me to create a picture in my mind of the land, the house, the town, etc.

There were only a couple of things in the book that caught my attention as being either weak or too modern. I found the premise where Kathleen is manipulated into marriage with the brother VERY WEAK. Kathleen had already been established as a fairly strong person, or at least one who spoke her mine, and the way she didn't say ANYTHING when she was being married was silly. She even signed the register when all she had to do was throw away the pen! Maybe it would have been better if she had been drugged or something.
Also, much of the language, especially from Kathleen, was very modern. If this young lady was upper class Boston born and bred, I feel there is no way she would have used the speech patterns the author gave her, not to mention the more modern idiomatic speech. That keep tossing me out of the story.
Other than that, a nice novel with some interesting twists and turns.

Love on Her Own Terms is a Historical Mail Order Bride book that is about an eighteen year old, Kathleen, who leaves her wealthy home in Boston when she learns her parents have promised her to a man old enough to be her father. Kathleen is a promising violinist but she throws her wealth and her violin future to become a mail order bride in Tombstone, Arizona.

She is engaged to Dan Gallaher and intends to meet him when she gets off the train. She is instead met by Dan's brother, Doyle, who does his best to marry Kathleen for himself. He is able to get her to marry him but not to consummate the marriage which gives Kathleen the option to annul the marriage. When Dan learns of his brother's deceit, he takes Kathleen to his ranch until the details of the annulment can be worked out.

Dan is immediately drawn to Kathleen but trust is something he has trouble doing. Dan also has fears he is dealing with that stops him from getting close to Kathleen. But the more time he spends with her, the more he finds himself falling for her. Kathleen feels the same way. When Kathleen's marriage is annulled, she and Dan get married. But being fully married is another thing.

Soon Dan finds he has an enemy that is determined to get Kathleen all to himself.

I thought the book had a good plot but I was turned off by some of the comments in the book about related to consummating the marriage. It was a huge focus that I understood, it was just the way it was referred to that I did not really like. I agree that some good editing would have been helpful. But overall, the book kept me engaged and I liked the romance that was clean and the suspense and action that book had.

Kathleen has just turned 18 found out that her benefactor the man who paid for her to go to the Boston School of Musical Arts. Is now hes her betrothed hes several years her senior and she only thinks of him as a uncle. Mr. Applelton he is extremely creepy and just one villian in this book. So with the help of her friend Siobhan they devise her escape out west as a mail order bride. She journeys west to Tombstone, Arizona and she meets who she assumes is her fiance Dan who has inherited his fathers ranch along with his troublesome brother he is looking for a companion to share his life with if circumstances dont stop him from claiming his bride. I was allowed to read and advance copy of this book and this is my honest review.

I found Kathleen to be very spoiled and for just to agree to marry a man after she finds out that he abducted her from his brother is pathetic, Especially after she escaped marrying a man thirty years her senior. Any situation this woman found herself in from then on was her own doing. Dan was beyond generous in having her in his home after what his brother had done. Personally, he should have put her back on the train to Boston, after he got her marriage to his brother annulled. For Dan to fall in love with Kathleen was a tragedy in of itself. I rate this story as three because the writing and the plot of story were well written, however Kathleen as a character inspired me to say take that you deserve every unhappiness and unfortunate thing that comes your way.

Average

I picked this book up free on Amazon. I was expecting a Christian mail order bride book, with a more detailed account of the Wild West and the Tombstone era with the Earps, but I was disappointed. There were not a lot of details in the story, so I was left wanting to know more about each scene. It was a "sweet" romance, so nothing other than kissing was mentioned.

I am glad this book was free because of the reasons listed above. If you are in the market for a sweet romance with not much story development, then you will probably enjoy this book. It just was too underdeveloped for me.

Wonderful story.

I couldn't put it down. The idea of being sold to someone just to secure their place in society is really bogus.
At least Kathleen found her way out of that arrangement and found true love in the wild west. The idea of using the Earl brother in your story was great.
The adventures that she went on were somewhat terrifying at times. Other times not so much. It took awhile for Dan to come out of his shell but, eventually he did.
Doyle caused a lot of problems that should have been avoided.
But, all in all I give this book a 100% okay in my book.

Thank You,

Good thing is the marvelous description of the landscapes. The story has an excellent romantic scene at the lake, the inside of the house, the mentioning of music concerts and certain famous melodies, the warm relationship that develops between Kathleen and the Mexican housekeeper, Lupe. Bad thing is that the heroine looks ridiculously dump through her actions. She seems like a puppet who lets everyone drag her wherever they want.Story’s drama is wether the hero will have sex with the heroine and when will that happen. And when it happens, it’s just a three word mentioning. No real conflict, no real drama and an absolute shallow heroine.

It is hard to remember at times that it wasn’t that long ago that daughters were considered a commodity to be used for financial position or gain for the parents, not necessarily for the daughter’s best interest. Kathleen preferred to take the chance on being a mail order bride to being the child bride of a much older family friend/benefactor. Things don’t go quite as planned. Carol Colyer put a lot of twists and turns into this tale. Kathleen has definitely her hands full with the Gallagher family. I loved the inclusion of what could have been happening in Tombstone in this time period.

A Woman ahead of her time!

When Kathleen learns at 18 that her parents have betrothed her to a man in his 50's to pay their debts she decides to take her life into her own hands. The strength she shows throughout this book is amazing and would be expected of someone more mature. Even though some of her decisions get her into trouble she owns up to them and moves forward. I truly enjoyed the story surrounding the Earps and their women. As the relationship of Dan and Kait develops it is rare to see the fears that a man can have that holds them back and this was a great aspect of this story. As the relationship builds the HEA is so worth waiting for.

I enjoyed this story very much. It had many twists and turns. I like how it wove the Earps and Tombstone into the storyline. I have been to Tombstone and enjoyed very mush my visit. I especially loved the main characters, Kathleen and Dan. However all of the other characters in the story added much to the story. I liked the additional epilogue at the end of the story too. I do have to say that Kathleen had to put up with a lot of crap from a lot of people; but in the end she was able to forgive.

This was an easy reader, compulsive Kathleen running away from one engagement into another marriage proposal to find herself whisked away by the brother Doyle.
Dan was the brother she meant to marry but now being hitched to Doyle throws a complication. Dan has relationship issues of his own which when Kathleen eventually gets her annulment they marry soon after . Dan is a strong protector with a body you just want to crumble into.
Overall a good read would have liked a bit more action in sure the West was more dangerous.

Even though I'm not a big fan of wild west stories, I enjoyed reading this book.

The author does a good job of making the characters and settings realistic. The characters are believable because they aren't perfect. For example, the heroine is spunky, but had a lapse in judgment early on that causes complications later. The supporting characters add depth to the story. Not all mail-order brides had happy endings in real life, but this story has a happy ending.

I would recommend this book for a clean read for any age person. It has love, drama, friends, death, and growth in self worth. It is enjoyable and has a variety of characters. When you write a semi- historical novel one should use words from that time line and not modern phrases that didn't exist in that period of time.

A convoluted story

A good try for a new author. I think that as Carol continues to write stories she will get better. There were a lot of loose ends in characters, such as the Earp Brothers. Also, the H and h stories at times were unbelievable. This is not a quick read at almost 400 pages.

Liked all the characters, several became very endearing and story was interesting. Set near Tombstone, AZ , I think in late 1800s. Was a bit chagrined that her "intended" sent her $1,000 . If year was 1870... that's like.... $18,000 today... that's quite some trousseau! But very good story, great descriptions , especially of the Ranch.

Entertaining

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The story was easy to follow and understand. There was one booboo, concerning the Dr name. He was one name on the first mention and the last couple, and another throughout the book. Funny but didn't ruin the story. A little description helped the visual without making it flounder. Good job!

Her parents were more or less selling her to a old man.

She became a mail order bride to run away from being sold before it happened. His brother played a trick on her and said he was his brother when she got off the train. I liked the way the story played out to get her to the right man.

Enjoyable read

The story itself is well crafted. It’s delightful and I truly enjoyed it. The only concerns is the choppy nature that it is written. There are times that it bounces from one scene to another without a smooth and clear transition. There are a few places where the consistency is a little off. But over all the story was a simple and fun read.

A well written Western Mail-Order Bride novel with somewhat of a twist. The characters are well written and she even throws in some well known names from the past. My first book from Carol Colyer and I was not disappointed. Definitely looking forward to more from her. A must read.
