John Ernst Steinbeck was an American writer. He won the 1962 Nobel Prize in Literature "for his realistic and imaginative writings, combining as they do sympathetic humor and keen social perception". He has been called "a giant of American letters."
During his writing career, he authored 33 books, with one book coauthored alongside Edward F. Ricketts, including 16 novels, six non-fiction books, and two collections of short stories. He is widely known for the comic novels Tortilla Flat (1935) and Cannery Row (1945), the multi-generation epic East of Eden (1952), and the novellas The Red Pony (1933) and Of Mice and Men (1937). The Pulitzer Prize–winning The Grapes of Wrath (1939) is considered Steinbeck's masterpiece and part of the American literary canon. By the 75th anniversary of its publishing date, it had sold 14 million copies.
Most of Steinbeck's work is set in central California, particularly in the Salinas Valley and the California Coast Ranges region. His works frequently explored the themes of fate and injustice, especially as applied to downtrodden or everyman protagonists.

A Steibeck short story that gives us a snap shot of the wonderful characters and insights of his epic novels. Steinbeck creates amazing characters and a sense of place in the small California farming town. I don't think I can ever enter a bar again without yelling out "Whiskey!"

This short story, among others, is why I find Steinbeck fascinating. The premise that is presented bursts with vividness throughout the short story, and although, at times, it might seem as an echo to the gripping "Of Mice and Men", Johnny Bear is able to stand on its own.

An unusual yet somewhat amusing tale. A large dirty man, known as Johnny Bear, is able to recite conversations impeccably that he has overhead. His price is whiskey. The bar that Johnny Bear frequents is the hub of rumors and information, and the more whiskey he is fed, the more conversations he will recite that he has heard.

Johnny has the mind of a child, he is known as a fool and a "half-wit". Inevitably, this ends in tragedy - a similar theme in Of Mice And Men.

My mom had the same ability as Johnny Bear: both could imitate other people's voices, word for word, tone for tone. And Mom, like Bear, would do it in another state of mind and never remember. Oh, did I learn family secrets! Steinbeck's skill at characterization as about impossible to top. That said, I found the final lines tough to grasps at first.
