Because the fans of Ashley’s Tale demanded it! Making Jake gives you the backstory of how an unpredictable killer was made. In a mind twisted by abuse, there is little more than the hope of breaking free from its chains. Barely a teen, Jack starts a ripple effect that will follow him into adulthood and irrevocably shape him. He can see now, the world needs to be fixed... and he can start with his best friend and unrequited love, April. Through a brutal intervention, Jack plans to break April's cycle of one despicable boyfriend after another and teach her how to stand up for herself. But can he navigate the obstacles and pull it off without going to jail? And, more importantly, can he free April from the psychological chains she clings to and bring about lasting change – not only for her, but perhaps for him as well?
Jake is a character I love to hate...and also the character I hate to love.
The books in this series bring out a weird (but really clever and unique) dynamic, because the reader can completely understand, and approve, of why Jake is doing what he's doing. Yet, it's hard not to feel his methods are abominable.
Making Jake was a fascinating look at everything that eventually led to the heart of book one in the series, Ashley's Tale. This was the prequel. And though I did feel there was some repetition between the two stories, it was necessary to establish how Jake's "process" came to be.
Mike Duke's voice is crisp and fresh...I love his writing style. And I'm just going to say it...I was NOT expecting one of the twists at the conclusion. Bravo, Mike!
There is a trigger warning, as there are some animal deaths. Thankfully, Mike warned me ahead of time, so I just skipped over those sections. It did not diminish the story for me in any way, and I appreciated knowing it was coming.
Bottom line, I highly recommend this series if you're looking for something new and different. I'm already curious about book three, The Initiation, which I'll be reading in the next few weeks.
4.25 stars AVAILABLE NOW!
My heartfelt thanks to Mike Duke, who is a very cool guy, for my review copy.
White Knight turns into Black Knight, with lots of exposition. I felt "Ashley's Tale" was a better emotional read. This one was a complete turn off. Not for me.
MAKING JAKE is brutal. And brilliant. I am rarely a fan of a prequel written as the second book in a series. I like things orderly. Yet here I am, suggesting you read this after Ashley's Tale. If you survive that, you'll be ready for this one. Maybe. Duke rocks! I have quickly become a fan and look forward to reading even more of his works.
In Making Jake, we get to see just what caused Jake Marlow to become the twisted psycho that we experienced in the first installment of this trilogy, Ashley's Tale. Mike Duke did a great job at making me loathe our deluded main character from his shocking origins to the heartbreaking end of this novella. There was one scene that I do not think i can ever forget... and I practically felt it as I was reading the words. Truly a disturbed individual, Jake is now explained and we will get to see what his ultimate endgame is in the next and final book of the trilogy!
This book was given to me by the author, in exchange for an honest review.
Much like the first book, Ashley’s Tale, this book does not disappoint with its themes of revenge. One thing this book does well, is that it provides backstory for the first books antagonist. You see just how far he goes to get what he wants and the methods used to get him metaphorically off. Something else that is interesting is that this book becomes a character study as well, with seeing how he manipulated and changed identities just to escape problems. Something else, is each story is self contained, which is easier to follow! Overall this book was just as good as the first and seeing the lore build for these two makes me excited for book 3!
Thank you giving me the opportunity to review, Mike!
Okay, this review may make me out to be some kind of psycho, but hear me out! LOL
In a way, I kind of see what Jake is trying to do. I can understand his frustrations with women who refuse to stand up for themselves and just accept the abuse. I, myself, have been in abusive relationships before and have the scars to prove it. Before I met my husband, I was much like the girls Jake's talking about. The ones that just accept it because they don't have any self esteem or self worth. I can understand how frustrating that is to see, to watch, but I IN NO WAY agree with the way he went about to change them. LOL!
While I do agree with his idea of helping the girls, or in this case, April, realize just how strong she truly is, I think his tactics were so messed up. Definitely made for a great story though!
Once again, this story is dark, yet so gripping, there were even times where I actually had hope for Jake. You find out where he came from, what he went through as a child, and it felt as though you were living those horrors right along with him! You can't help but get into the character's heads, to feel what they are feeling and try to understand them. You can feel Jake's frustrations, his hopes for April to finally realize what she means to him. You can also feel his disappointment. Even I was disappointed!
WARNING: This is NOT a happy story, this does NOT have an HEA where they ride off happily into the sunset. This book is dark and gritty. And that ending?! HOLY CRAP! Which is probably why I loved it so much! LOL
A page turner for sure! If you haven't read Ashley's Tale, read it first. Once again, I am thrilled to have read this authors works. He really knows how to draw you into the story and hold you total attention. If you have Ashley's Tale and haven't read it yet..........read it before reading this. It makes much more sense and gives you a greater understanding of Making Jake.
At the age of 13, Jack killed his mother's boyfriend because he was trying to strangle her and he just had enough. I can't say that I don't blame him.
While he is in College, he has a god friend April. He loves April and feels like he is her white knight. She comes to his home one day with a black eye and in tears. She has been raped and beaten by her boyfriend Brad. This causes him to be enraged of how she keeps being treated by abusive men. But, she keeps going to them and not standing up for herself.
Jack realises that he couldn't even be with her because he had a girlfriend that shut him down, and he became controlling, selfish, and narcissistic. That's when he feels like he needs to become the Black Knight to try to make April protect herself and not be weak.
He rents a barn for 2 months in which he states is for an e,experiment. He wasn't quite lying. He suckers April into the experiment and kidnaps her. He has interesting and horrific tactics to strengthen her.
I understand his intentions but things don't go exactly as he planned.
I really liked getting more of a background about Jack aka Jake. It gives you more of an insight on his intentions with Ashley. This book just shows you the beginning of Jack's plan and I can't wait to read the next book and see where it takes us.
The skill it must take to put so much quality content into such a short piece of work is astonishing to me. So, after reading Ashley's Tale, I had so many questions about how the hell Jake became such a piece of work. And Making Jake answered a lot of those questions. Is it nature, is it nurture, is it both? This novella makes the reasoning behind Jake's absolutely bonkers ideology almost make sense. This was gritty and revealing and absolutely grotesque sometimes, but really got into a deep dive into what makes this guy tick. This was great and I'm really excited to read the 3rd book in the series and get back to Ashley's story. TW for some sexual abuse, physical violence and animal harm (easily skimmed). Highly recommend, this is some good shit!
Mike Duke is a dark horse. He isn't as well known in the horror community as he should be. He is an incredible author. His writing is raw and gritty and it never fails to give you a visceral response.
This is book 2 in the Ashley's Tale trilogy, a prequel of sorts giving the backstory of the antagonist introduced in the first book. It was great and I appreciate knowing more about the antagonist and his motivation. The storytelling doesn't miss a beat and is so fluid.
I can't get enough Mike Duke and am anxious to read the third in the series. These books affect me at gut-level, making me feel breathless and questioning so much.
OK, OK.... so I loved the first one but this one? Even better!
This 2nd installment of Ashley's tale focuses on Jack (a.k.a Jake) and how he became the person that he is. Is he good? Is he bad? Is he really trying to help? In the 2nd short story we get to meet April, a friend of Jacks. She keeps dating men that do not treat her very well and Jack decides to do something about it. You'll feel sympathy for him but there is another side to Jack that will make you question his true intentions. Is he really the knight in shining armor or is he just like all the other men, these brutal alpha males?
Can't wait to read the 3rd installment of Ashley's Tale.
A burning question I had when finishing Ashley's Tale (Book One) by Mike Duke was "who is Jake?" Boy-oh-boy did Mr. Duke answer with Making Jake (Book Two). This novella wastes no time and offers no pleasantries when giving us the building blocks that birthed Jake. The emotions are raw and the dialogue (both inner and outer) pave the way to a fast paced hellishly fantastical read that pulls you in and doesn't let go. Is Jake evil, or, is that "evil" necessary in a world where we are becoming more and more content in our discomfort and anguish? Enjoy the ride, and decide for yourself!
Perfect sequel to Ashley’s Tale. It was able to answer so many questions I had after finishing the first book and still left me wanting more.
I love a book where I am (secretly) rooting for the main character and despite Jack’s obvious moral flaws, I can’t help but be fascinated by his mind and desire to do what he considers “the right thing.”
This book is a short, quick read but leaves you thinking about the story as much as a full-length novel would.
Making Jake is the second book in the Ashley's Tale trilogy and gives a really important insight into Jake's psyche. I thoroughly enjoy Mike's writing, he really knows how to immerse the reader into the mind of Jake and make you feel a certain amount of empathy. I have just started the 3rd and final book in the trilogy The Initiation and can't wait to see how this story concludes.
A great look into the forging of Jake Marlow. Perfecting his methods and creating his "school" while revealing the why was brilliantly put together leading to a quite shocking conclusion. Duke delivers again, setting up for the finale of the trilogy.
Making Jake is the second of a three (so far) book series. It follows ‘Jake’ and gives the reader an interesting insight as to how he became the man he is in the first book. If you enjoyed the first, this is a no-brainier.
WARNING: THIS REVIEW MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS FROM THE FIRST BOOK, ASHLEY’S TALE! IF YOU HAVE NOT READ ASHLEY’S TALE, I ADVISE YOU TO READ IT BEFORE EVER CONSIDERING READING ASHLEY’S TALE: MAKING JAKE! THESE BOOKS WERE DESIGNED IN AN ORDER TO BE READ CORRECTLY AND TO EXPERIENCE THE TALE TO THE FULLEST!!
Ashley’s Tale is phenomenal in every way you go through a series of events straight from the first page to the end of Ashley’s Tale. Duke presents the sharp terror of Ashley, the main character, and the twisted game that her abductor, Jake, has induced upon her. The struggle from the low succumbed life she has almost messes with your mind and the feelings you feel towards the main characters; this story line leaves you with a sense of defeat giving way to a rise and questioning the bounds of restraint that we face in our normal, pathetic, everyday lives. Ashley’s Tale brings forth the strongest female character we have seen since Jennifer Lopez in “Enough”, imparting this darkness that surrounds this tale of extreme survival. Will Ashley rise above the situation at hand and survive? Will she be the same person if she does?
This is the third book I have read from Mike Duke, the “Master of Horror” himself. Ashley’s Tale: Making Jake takes you on a personal level to learn more about the vivid and realistic domain of Jake himself from the first book, Ashley’s Tale. Again, from start to finish this story is a hellish and bumpy ride. As you will learn throughout Making Jake, he goes through a lot of events shown through his own eyes; he decides in the end not to resist himself. He changes the outcomes, which are brought forth into his own personal domain, to rise against and take over the hell that is burning before his very own eyes at an early age. His real name is Jack and he has a plan: a game that needs to be initiated. Jack is a disturbed, sweet, and intelligent soul out to see the path that he created is fulfilled; but how will he do it? While thinking of her and it roaring in him for years, like a train of inevitable consequences bearing down on him at last. The unspoken love for her, a love reciprocated in the way he wished. Jack heard a knock on the door; he looked through the peephole. It was April... Are you ready to learn how this all transpired- how the ultimate life changing domain and environment process for changing your everlasting soul began? Will this forever change Jack? Can April be strong enough to be put through Jack’s game like Ashley before? Find out for yourself, you will not be disappointed- let the games begin!
Mike Duke did it again- he is one of those rare gems that will keep you hanging on and continue to push you to new limits with every read. He has constantly surprised me with each book I have read, keeping me engaged with the story every time and taking it further each time. This time I am going to compare him to James Wan the creator of “Saw”. I know what your thinking, ‘Is this book really capable of being like “Saw”?’ Yes! In a very realistic way of the games portrayed by Mike Duke’s Character Jake, it is very much so. In my opinion, it is better than James Wan version because he had potential but never striven to the fullest and got off track; Mike Duke, on the other hand, has the potential James Wan’s movies never had.
A terrific book. A prequel. I suggest reading 'Ashley’s Tale' first!
Once again Mike explores character psyches in an original and compelling manner. We have a traumatizing past that deeply affects a young man. He grows up realizing he is becoming his wretched father, which he despises. So instead, he turns himself around. He uses the disturbing childhood experiences to shape him in an entirely different way. This realisation occurs about the time he falls for a girl named April. A poor college girl who repeatedly goes after abusive guys. She cannot break the cycle due to psychological wiring. She is drawn to these guys. Guys that beat her up and abuse her. Jake won’t stand for this. Any typical guy in his shoes, witnessing a girl he loves being beaten, would kick the crap out of the scum that do it. But Jake isn’t a typical guy. He has a much more insidious and carefully considered plan that’s much better than just assaulting some guy. His plan, if he succeeds, will see April being able to get revenge herself. Jake plans on toughening her up, and turning her into a weapon of his creation.
This is both fascinating and unnerving. We watch one character fight his natural instincts and become a better person. While we watch another forced into growing a pair! Then we have additional drama on top of that with some very tense moments.
This short story explains how Jake’s obsession began, his motives and justifications. In the real world some may not agree with his tactics, but his heart is in the right place. However, he deeply feels for this girl. If he is to make her strong enough to battle her enemies, he must be cruel to be kind. He has to shake off her initial impression of him, and become tougher, for both their sakes.
There is no writer quite like Mike. His writing is suspenseful yet elegant. I adore his depictions of action. How this author creates characters is uncanny! They become not fictional people, but real victims who have suffered and are turning their hurt into strength. He also glues us to these characters, who we grow attached too. We want them to succeed. We also want the various scum to get what they deserve.
A dark, tense tale of a man who makes women stronger by any means necessary.
A fantastic sequel to Mike Duke's 'Ashley's Tale'!
First of all, if you haven't read 'Ashley's Tale', go back and read that FIRST!!!
That being said, this sequel is an interesting "prequel" to the first book. It explains so much more about the characters introduced in the first book. Very well written and I'd love to see more from this author!
What a dark and disturbing story....I loved it. If this is want doing anything for love is about, I'll pass. The compelling characters are both damaged goods and the pace of this story is relentless, right up to the shocking conclusion. This author sure has a way with words and you find yourself totally engrossed in the story. I'm looking forward to the next book in this series.
Making Jake looks at the circumstances that created the mysterious figure from the first book, but by giving us answers as to how the main character became the man he is, the author dilutes much of the punch and impact of the first book. For me, this didn’t really work as well and I much preferred the previous novel of the two.
Wow. This was a visceral ride from start to finish. Everything was clearly thought out and logical but totally unexpected. I'm left wanting to know more about where this dance ends up. I can't help thinking Jake is the new Hannibal without the food fetish.
Interesting short story of love and abuse. Jack trying to make woman he loved see the difference. Thumbs up for this one. I recommend giving this one a try!
