Fitzwilliam Darcy has nearly everything a gentleman could want. Looks, wealth, connections. He lacks but one aspect of a perfect life, a bride. He’s chosen Miss Elizabeth Bennet to fill the role but when he proposes, to his utmost chagrin, she refuses him in no uncertain terms. His heart stomped on by a country miss who is by no societal measure his equal, he can’t imagine a worse moment. Elizabeth Bennet does not care for Mr. Darcy and his highhanded, supercilious ways and wants nothing more to do with him. She hopes, in view of her vehement refusal of his proposal, to never set eyes on him again. After all, a man with Mr. Darcy’s pride can hardly be expected to bear her company after the strong words she’s issued. Fate, however, has more plans for Elizabeth and Darcy. The moment before they mean to separate forever, both are abducted and whisked away on a harrowing journey. To save themselves and return home, they must band together to surmount perils, overcome obstacles and decide whom to trust. Join Darcy and Elizabeth on their journey as they take the long road back to Longbourn… and to love. The Long Road to Longbourn is a Pride and Prejudice variation novel of approximately 74,500 words. Renata McMann and Summer Hanford began writing Pride and Prejudice Variations together in 2014 and have since become immersed in the amazing world Jane Austen created. Whether you’re a fan of Darcy and Elizabeth specifically or of clean Regency Romance in general, you will enjoy both McMann’s ability to imagine variations of this classic love story and Hanford’s skill in turning these variations of Mr. Darcy, Elizabeth Bennet, and their enduring love into entertaining stories.
When I wake up, well I know I'm gonna be, I'm gonna be the man who wakes up next you When I go out, yeah I know I'm gonna be I'm gonna be the man who goes along with you When I come home well I know I'm gonna be I'm gonna be the man who comes back home to you And if I grow-old well I know I'm gonna be I'm gonna be the man who's growing old with you But I would walk five hundred miles And I would walk five hundred more Just to be the man who walks a thousand miles To fall down at your door 500 miles - the Proclaimers.
This is a wild, adventurous P&P what if that has Darcy's dreadful proposal interrupted by a kidnapping, where they are stuck on a dilapidated ship with Wickham who seems to be a captive, wrecked and forced to wander around Scotland seeking assistance.
During this adventure the scales are lifted from Lizzy's eyes regarding Darcy and she finds herself falling in love with her hero. Darcy is revealed to be everything a young lady would want; resourceful, brave, honest, fair and caring. And of course Wickham is revealed to be Wickham.
What I particularly liked: Lizzy was already suspicious of Wickham and didn't immediately take his side over Darcy.
What I could have done without: Apparently when it comes to Georgiana, Darcy and Richard are total putzes. At no point since her thwarted elopement did either man disabuse her of her notions of George being wonderful. Nor did Mrs. Annesley. What a bunch of maroons....
Also the subplot of Lizzy constantly thinking she has been ruined. I am not a Regency expert but if being victim of a crime meant you were ruined I think there would have been a lot more 'kidnappings' ... Wickham could have just snatched Georgie off the street and taDA he's going to the chapel before the gallows...
I really enjoyed this story. We don't often get kidnapping along with sinking ships and our dear couple having to hike through the terrain of Scotland begging for food and a place to rest their heads. The Hunsford proposal is just about at its end when men bearing guns and the parsonage cook
break in and carry both away. They soon find themselves taken to a boat and are thrown into a room in which George Wickham is also captive. There is a much leading up to this point and it is not only ironic that Elizabeth now has a chance to really compare the two men as they dwell together on board a ship but also somewhat amusing as all know she is now truly compromised. Darcy has already offered and she threw it in his face. Wickham has always seemed charming and a true gentleman whose future was spoiled by Darcy. Who will be her hero here, offer for her and/or try to protect her?
It was intriguing to read how when push came to shove true character is revealed. Elizabeth does realize her misunderstandings about Darcy's acts and words but there is still all he thinks about her family and her connections. As their trials take them bedraggled and dirt poor on their way there is no pride standing in the way of seeking solace.
I don't want to say too much here as it was so interesting to read and I want other readers to have that same pleasure. Part of the amusement in this story is our truly bad boy and all he gets himself into. Yes, Wickham's part in this story has me smiling ear-to-ear. ODC does have their HEA.
Read this story - I can't hint enough but there is lots to find of adventure and amusement as well as a bit of romance...all clean and above board.
It's not bad enough that Elizabeth Bennet is in the middle of telling Mr. Darcy he's the last man in the world she could ever be prevailed upon to marry. As she's still talking, kidnappers burst into the Husford parsonage, grab the two of them, tie and blindfold them, and take them away. Talk about having a bad day!
The original plan was to kidnap Darcy for ransom, but when one of the conspirators overhears his proposal (without hearing the refusal), it is correctly assumed that taking Elizabeth along will ensure better behavior from their prime captive. The thugs aren't terribly bright, though, and it doesn't take too long for their plans to go awry. Naturally, Wickham is around and looking out only for #1 (himself).
The story moves quickly from the kidnapping experience to their difficult journey once Darcy and Elizabeth get free of their imprisonment, as the title implies. They're on foreign soil (though where exactly they're not sure), they have no money, and they look like vagrants. Of course, Elizabeth's reputation is shot after spending so much time without proper chaperonage, but that's the least of their worries when they're hungry, they need shelter, Darcy's (borrowed) boots are pinching his feet, and they must walk miles to get to civilization..and all Wickham can do is complain.
It's fast-paced, and obviously Darcy and Elizabeth get plenty of page time together. Well-written, clean adventure/romance.

Here is a tiring adventure!
We begin with Wickham departing Meryton in debt and falling in with a bunch of smugglers. The smugglers turn kidnappers; pumping Wickham for information on any rich families he knows. Hmm … who does Wickham know among the upper-crust?
The scene shifts to Hunsford on the evening of a certain visit at the parsonage. Armed men enter the Collins’ home and abduct Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy. They are forced into a wagon for a trip to the sea, and then imprisoned in a small room on a ship.
And there in that small room is … Wickham!
Is Wickham confined because of a break with the smugglers/kidnappers? Or is he confined to spy on Elizabeth and Darcy?
The civilized man has built a coach, but has lost the use of his feet. ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson, "Self-Reliance," 1841
Days of travel follow in the badly-manned ship. They seem to be heading north but Wickham says the smugglers’ plan is to go to Ireland. Why are they traveling north?
A storm at sea – a ship wrecked on rocks near the shore. Escape – but escape to where? Scotland where they might find aid? Or France where they might find the enemy?
Safety in Scotland! But after days confined in the ship, after escape into the sea, after having lost all their money – who will offer aid?
The disheveled travelers are no better than vagabonds to the isolated Scots they encounter. Very little aid and comfort is offered. No alternative but to begin walking from southeast Scotland to Derbyshire!
Miss Bingley always claimed Elizabeth was a very great walker!
Oh – what is Wickham’s part in all this? Will Elizabeth still believe Wickham’s sob story or will she see the truth?
This is a great adventure; a clean story of self-reliance and survival. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys JAFF.
Thoughts come clearly while one walks. ~ Thomas Mann
A delightful story about Darcy and Elizabeth developing a strong relationship through adversities and danger. Darcy is swoon-worthy, always ready to defend Lizzy and a rock solid support. He learned a lesson through their harrowing experience and worked on his less impressive personality traits. Elizabeth is delightful , fierce and indomitable. I loved a twist with Wickham, Darcy didn't have to tell Elizabeth about him, Wicky exposed himself beautifully. It was a pleasure to read. Highly recommended
“Life is a journey that must be traveled no matter how bad the roads and accommodations.” –Oliver Goldsmith
Just when Elizabeth Bennet thought the disastrous Huntsford proposal couldn’t get any worse, it did. Right as she was delivering her famous set-down to Darcy, men with pistols entered the room and kidnapped them. Next, ODC [our dear couple] endured a journey, bound and gagged, to the coast of England, where they boarded a smuggler’s ship and were stowed away in a room below deck. Only they were not alone. Slowly, from the shadows, we see none other than that SBRB [scum-bag-rat-bastard] that started the whole thing.
This was a story of survival. ODC surviving a shipwreck on the Scottish coast, hunger, the elements, societal rejection of strangers who were suspicious of their story, and footpads. And yet, through all their hardships they managed to find kindness among strangers. This AU [alternate universe], which deviated from the canon story, was riveting as ODC walked the Scottish road south toward England and Pemberley. This Darcy was the large-and-in-charge Darcy. Oh, my. He was amazing. His love for Elizabeth intensified as the story progressed and he watched her endure so much with no complaints. She was amazing and so observant to what was going on around them.
This was also Elizabeth’s story as she came to realize the truth about Wickham and Darcy. She witnessed first hand the character of each man and came to her own conclusions. In many JAFF [Jane Austen Fan Fiction] stories, Darcy informs Lizzy of his relationship with Wickham. The authors took a different approach and I liked how they let Lizzy come to her own realization regarding the SBRB that continually showed his… character throughout the story. Yeah, he was… you know.
Quite the adventure! Darcy and Elizabeth embark on quite the journey in this multi-trope adventure: from Hunsford and an interrupted proposal where they are kidnapped; to being held prisoner on a ship with Wickham of all people; to being shipwrecked due to the ineptitude of their captors; and finally, making their way to safety while walking through Scotland, depending upon the kindness of strangers—or lack thereof.
Another kidnapping variation, you say? Yes, but this one has some unique details. First, the opening chapter is Wickham-centric, laying the foundation of the plot. Second, his being also a prisoner on the ship with ODC leads to much more interaction between him and Darcy than in most variations, something we don’t often see. Adding Elizabeth to the mix also provides lots of good dialogue, as she slowly pulls back the curtain on Wickham’s true character, and observes the kindness and gentleman-like manner of Darcy, and shows her just who is the better man.
Arriving at Pemberley, Georgiana causes a little angst, as does Mrs. Bennet upon their arrival at Longbourn, lamenting about Elizabeth’s ruination.
I loved Darcy in this book. He remains a hero and protector to the end. I haven’t read too many books by this pair of authors, but if the last two I’ve read are any indication of their talent, I have a lot of catching up to do. As mentioned, the dialogue is very good, but the narrative describing the events during their journey is also very well written.
Content is clean, with kisses only.
I read this book while listening along with audiobook, narrated and performed by Benjamin Fife. His delivery of all the characters was brilliantly done, entertaining me throughout.
I absolutely loved this book. Thrilling, engaging and entertaining with plenty of page time with ODC. I adored the portrayal of both Elizabeth and Darcy, one of my all-time favourites.
During the disastrous proposal at Hunsford, Darcy and Elizabeth are kidnapped and dragged to a ship headed north. They had to endure appalling conditions and great trials which showed their mettle while exposing Wickham for the lowlife he is. I loved how their relationship developed, how Wickham's flaws were revealed and the twists to Mary and Georgiana. The two latter were not given much page time but added a little something to the story in their own way.
It was entertaining with a few excellent jokes and I even appreciated Wickham's happy ending. His Journey was almost as much a part of the story as Darcy and Elizabeth's. This bit was chef's kiss brilliant and you will have to read the book to understand my paraphrase: Not three love, not three. Now have a pastry.
There is an option for a lost chapter and I read it and cannot understand why it was removed. It seems like it was needed.
Another excellent joke in the book is the way Darcy handles all manner of trials with aplomb but Mrs. Bennet fells him.
This was an enjoyable read that kept my attention. I would have liked to have seen things resolved a little better at the end, especially between Elizabeth & Georgiana as well as Georgiana’s budding romance. I also would have enjoyed seeing Jane & Bingleys engagement as well as a Darcy/Lizzy wedding, I was just left feeling a little unsatisfied. That aside, I really liked it!
Absolutely loved this variation! It really does have it all! So much crazy stuff happens to our heroes - they are kidnapped at gunpoint right after the first proposal! Then they are shoved into a cart's secret compartment, up close! They are taken to a ship and low and behold - Wickham is also a prisoner! They get shipwrecked, and have to make their way back to Derbyshire!
It's a fantastic journey. I was really kept captivated.
My only complaint is that there could/should have been one or two more chapters. I believe others have said this as well. Georgiana is so terrible to Elizabeth, screaming about how much she hates her because she can't believe how horrible Wickham is. That's fine - but we don't really get to ever see an understanding between them. Her attention is diverted elsewhere - but do they ever get along? Is there always animosity between them? Elizabeth's mother is terrible. We don't hear much about what happens in that realm either. Just a few more chapters and this would have been a 5/5!
Another good book by the Renata/Summer authors. Lots of off canon action and new interesting characters. The only spoilers I have for you all are in my subject line.
My only wish is that Darcy had given some thought to the ridiculous members of the Bennet family a little sooner. He seemed a bit churlish toward the end when we were well into the HEA.
I have read other books where Darcy and Elizabeth have been kidnapped or stranded after a shipwreck. This one included both as well as Wickham! Wickham was true to form and his the fact that he had money for food when they stopped at an inn. Wickham gets his comeuppance when Darcy finds out about his wife, especially since Wickham thinks that he can blackmail Darcy and force Elizabeth to marry him. Darcy and Elizabeth are already married unknown to Wickham. Darcy has the last laugh!
I loved this story in which kidnappers interrupt Darcy's first proposal and Wickham helpfully provides Elizabeth a fresh perspective on why Darcy doesn't like him. There is a lost chapter available as a link at the end and I have no idea why it was replaced with the existing epilogue because it was better IMO.
This Pride and Prejudice variation proves one my favorite quotes - "The flower that blooms in adversity is the most rare and beautiful of all".
In the middle of the Hunsford proposal, Elizabeth and Darcy are kidnapped and trapped on a boat with a most unlikely acquaintance, as part of a ransom scheme. As they escape their situation, they have to discover where they are and how to get home. During which time they have no resources or creature comforts. Elizabeth learns Darcy's true worth as a gentleman and genuinely good person. Darcy learns that Elizabeth is even more than he previously thought as they walk home. When they return home they have even more to deal with before - reputations, young ladies who believe themselves in love, and Wickham. All does come out right in the end for our dear couple that went through so much to find their happily ever after.
This is very different... the story starts with Wickham and we get some insight into his life as a smugglers assistant - if that would be the correct title for such a profession. He then supplies his co workers of details of Darcy and Lady Catherine with a view to robbing them. However, the situation quickly escalates to a kidnap of Darcy and Elizabeth in the middle of his infamous proposal. They are bound and taken on board a ship and what follows is the tale of them managing to get back home with no money or anyone else to rely on.
Georgiana is a right little madam and Wickham is a total scoundrel. All in all, I liked the story and read it in one sitting. There are lots of threads going on in terms of the relationships between the other characters, but the main focus is with Darcy and Elizabeth.
It is a real pet hate of mine that a story finishes at the point, which I feel, is just before the bit I really want to read about- then we fast forward into the future with an Epilogue. A personal thing that never fails to annoy me... despite the annoyance though, it didn't feel as though anything was missed out and I was happy with how everything came together at the end.
A good clean read and definitely something different.
I enjoyed this epic adventure. Will read again because I read quickly and I’m sure I miss a lot.
I did end up reading it again in my own personal challenge of reading all the Darcy and Elizabeth kidnapping stories. I loved this one. Wickham gets his just desserts and everything turns out well, of course.
I read a UK review that describes Georgiana as a right madam, which is just perfect. Of course the fault of all of the adults in her life. They didn’t tell her the truth about him? As Leslie says what a bunch of maroons.
Lots of humor but unfortunately lots of typos, too.

This story kept me captivated throughout. I loved this Darcy even more than most and honestly, that's saying something. It could take pages to recap this plot so I'm not going to attempt it. But the gentility of our favourite gentleman is so heartwarming and sincere that you just want to hug him and reassure him not to worry - there's bound to be a HEA.
What an interesting and clever plot! It is very interesting to be a witness to the lengths Darcy is willing to go to get Elizabeth's love. And the visual image of the characters and places I got from the descriptions of everything are great. You should add that chapter.
Loved loved loved this story. I’ve read other kidnapped stories but this was definitely the best. Darcy was perfect and Elizabeth was perfect. There characters were well done and perfect. Wickham was Wickham, not to evil but definitely depraved. Well done story.
In this Pride and Prejudice variation what could go even more wrong when Darcy proposes to Elizabeth at the Hunsford parsonage. They are abducted and eventually find themselves in Scotland but with Wickham. How will they all survive. An entertaining story.
I could not put this book down! This Pride and Prejudice variation is not your average Jane Austen fan fiction (JAFF). It's more of a romantic adventure story. I enjoyed it immensely in spite of a lot of implausibility. The reader does need to abandon rather than merely suspend disbelief with this one, but it's a fun read. By fun I don't mean humorous, though it has its moments. I mean it's full of adventure.
George Wickham deserts his militia post (though no mention is made of the fact that he has essentially deserted in the book) and abandons all his debts of honor as well as debts owed to trades people in Meryton. He takes up with a band of smugglers who aren't doing very well. They can tell from his manner of speaking and his behavior that he was raised as a gentleman and start pumping him for information about the wealthy people he knows, first with the idea that he can help them sell their smuggled brandy, but later with more sinister ideas in mind.
Coincidentally, the smugglers have a couple of cohorts working at the parsonage at Hunsford as servants. One is a young pregnant woman from Scotland working as the Collins' cook. The other is her lover, a groom named Jeb. Jeb's brother is one of the smugglers. Fiona/Mary doesn't really want anything to do with smuggling, but since Jeb is the father of her child, she doesn't have much choice but to keep him around. The smugglers have been plotting to steal from Lady Catherine.
After the smuggling operation fails, the four original smugglers decide to try kidnapping, at which point, Wickham realizes he's gotten in deeper than he wants (according to this story, smuggling doesn't carry nearly as severe a punishment as kidnapping, though in fact I believe the punishment was equally severe at that time in history), so he backs out, or tries to.
Meanwhile, Elizabeth Bennet is visiting her friend Charlotte at Hunsford, and Mr. Darcy and his cousin Colonel Fitzwilliam are staying with their aunt, Lady Catherine, at Rosings. The smugglers have just shown up out back at the same time Darcy rides to Hunsford to visit Elizabeth and propose to her. She has just turned him down and they are arguing, when armed men with pistols burst in and kidnap the two of them.
It's tempting to go on, but that sets the action in motion in this adventure story, and by then the reader is hooked.
Although the enjoyment factor made up for most of them, the story had quite a few weaknesses, I thought. I was going to go into them in exhaustive detail, but on second thought I don't want my super pickiness to make me every writer's worst nightmare or spoil the enjoyment of this book for others.
I loved this story, and I do highly recommend it to anyone who loves good JAFF.
It was so enticing that I couldn’t put it down, this book grabbed my interest from the very first page. I couldn’t put it down, I had to know what happened next. The story is well written with a very good storyline. You will see the most beloved characters in a whole new way. This is a Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice variation. This is a part of the A Pride and Prejudice Variation series.

Join Darcy and Elizabeth on their journey as they take the long road back to Longbourn, and to love. So with all that and more this story pulls you in and holds you tight. It’s a must read. I highly recommend to everyone.
This is a fanciful story, about kidnapping, shipwrecks, rescues, betrayals, and weird family behaviors. It starts with Wickham falling in with a group of smugglers after he deserts his militia post to avoid debts. When smuggling doesn't work out they decide to try kidnapping and ransom demands. Wickham inadvertently steers them to Darcy during his disastrous proposal at Hunsford parsonage, and Darcy and Elizabeth are both abducted, forced aboard a ship, and kept prisoner in a room with Wickham. In this way Elizabeth learns just what a sleazy coward Wickham is, and what a hero Darcy is. They eventually escape, and Darcy and Elizabeth make their way back to Pemberly and become engaged.
The whole storyline makes me wonder why Darcy has such terrible luck, first with Georgiana 's near catastrophe with Wickham, then his failed proposal to Elizabeth, then his abduction and all the horrific trials that ensue, then encountering the Bennett family. In this story Mrs. Bennett is ridiculously bad. There is also some very bad behavior on the part of Georgiana when she meets Elizabeth, and the story never does pursue a solution to that problem. Instead she ends up married to a very strange character named Mr. Everett, whose weird ways make it seem unlikely to me that Darcy would ever accept him for her.
This is not great literature, but all right for a light diversion. There are quite a lot of editing errors, but I can recommend it as a cute story.
This is a P&P variation unlike any I've read before. The story is interesting. One might say that Darcy was having a "terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day". And unfortunately for her, Elizabeth got dragged right along with him. And the days coming weren't much better. The only thing that came from canon was the few words overheard from the disastrous proposal. The rest of the story all came from the author's imaginings and it takes the reader on a fantastical ride. What is the probability that all the events could really happen? Not terribly high I should think so just suspend those ideas and enjoy the adventure. The journey brings out the true colors of each character. Darcy really is a hero. He shows himself as protector, problem solver, able to set aside pride, physically and mentally strong and caring, among other things I'm sure. Wickham truly is a louse, whiner, selfishly thinks only of himself. Elizabeth is brave and strong, doesn't complain about unfortunate situations and also a problem solver. The whole adventure shows Elizabeth who she really trusts and prefers. Didn't care much for Georgiana's behavior. And I wondered about how Lady Catherine would really have responded to the situation. But I enjoyed that Charlotte gained strength in the eyes of both Collins and Lady C. Also, that she knew how to hold on to it too. Overall, I enjoyed the story and it was nice to see Darcy and Elizabeth get so much time together.
Sex: references to Wickham's escapades Language: a little Violence: here and there
In the face of Fitzwilliam Darcy’s chivalry and constancy, Elizabeth Bennet gradually falls in love for the gentleman who she initially despised and whose marriage proposal she refused. The slow and detailed progression of Elizabeth’s blossoming feelings for Mr. Darcy is what makes this variation remarkable and worthwhile the read. With outrageous adventures that throw the beloved couple constantly together, Elizabeth slowly discovers the true nature and honorable character of the man she deemed the last man she will ever marry. Compared to someone with the appearance of goodness like George Wickham, Elizabeth Bennet realizes Mr. Darcy is the only man who captured her heart and retains it especially when, by his acts/deeds, he shows the utmost care for her safety and comfort.
What confounds this reader is the title used, which seems to be just a hurried afterthought. After their ordeal, Longbourn wasn’t really the beloved couple’s destination but love and safety.
