About the author

The brothers Arkady Strugatsky [Russian: Аркадий Стругацкий] and Boris Strugatsky [Russian: Борис Стругацкий] were Soviet-Russian science fiction authors who collaborated through most of their careers.

Arkady Strugatsky was born 25 August 1925 in Batumi; the family later moved to Leningrad. In January 1942, Arkady and his father were evacuated from the Siege of Leningrad, but Arkady was the only survivor in his train car; his father died upon reaching Vologda. Arkady was drafted into the Soviet army in 1943. He trained first at the artillery school in Aktyubinsk and later at the Military Institute of Foreign Languages in Moscow, from which he graduated in 1949 as an interpreter of English and Japanese. He worked as a teacher and interpreter for the military until 1955. In 1955, he began working as an editor and writer.

In 1958, he began collaborating with his brother Boris, a collaboration that lasted until Arkady's death on 12 October 1991. Arkady Strugatsky became a member of the Union of Soviet Writers in 1964. In addition to his own writing, he translated Japanese language short stories and novels, as well as some English works with his brother.

One of the earlier Strugatsky books which I think didn't reach their excellence yet but is already pretty close.

When landing on an unknown planet two young men, Vadim and Anton, as well as a mysterious stranger Saul who went with them encounter a less developed civilization with concentration camps and a lot of violence. Their question is how to help them.

A very short novel that includes a lot. The most interesting is their discussions on whether it is right and will work to interrupt the development of the planet's society and change their brutal way of life which they consider to be normal. Would it be possible to change it to utopian communist society in this case? This idea was pretty well developed.

The book was published in the 60s and what is interesting is that the original didn't pass censorship. in the first version Saul escaped a Soviet camp but they had to change it to him escaping the fascists. This fact gives an interesting turn on what Strugatskys wanted to tell their readers

Too bad I read this book before the first in the series. I usually never do this but I don't think it will change much. Will move on in a right order from now on.

Disclaimer: I did not include the other two short stories in this volume, The Kid From Hell and Space Mowgli, in this review, as those two are the 7th and 8th stories in the series, and I'm moving through the Noon Universe chronologically.

Escape Attempt starts off a bit strange, as the tone is almost blase. I suppose it was just a bit difficult for me to wrap my mind around a few nobodies casually hopping into their semi-living spaceship, at a stranger's behest, and flitting off to an uncharted planet with no guidance or supervision.

However, once they got there, I was leaning further into the pages with each paragraph. The characters stumble across a bizarre and primitive human society that is so sharply contrasted with the book's antagonists as to be well and truly alien. The Strugatsky brothers really get you hooked, however, and when the three explorers started openly contemplating the implications of both their actions and inactions, I was glued. The authors have a masterful way of pulling off a compelling and contemplative dialogue. Really great stuff, but the opening is a bit of a strange experience to get through.

However, the choice of the publishers to release the second, seventh and eighth stories in one volume is just incomprehensible to me.

Сильная книжка!

Наконец-то я добрался до знакомых и любимых Arkady Strugatsky и Boris Strugatsky!!!! Будем считать все их предыдущие книги просто пробой пера.

Из плюсов могу отметить, в первую очередь, сюжет: читать было интересно, потому что была тайна, что-то неизвестное, неисследованное. Во-вторых, появились настоящие мысли, а не советская пропаганда о том, что единственный смысл жизни - это труд (хотя и здесь без подобного бреда не обошлось, но это были единичные случаи)!!! Ну и конечно же, юмор (все эти стишки про структуральнейшего лингвиста)!!!!

Из минусов: странные завязка и финал. Но здесь это было не главное.

An interesting, though at times difficult to read, series of three science fiction novellas, each dealing with a different extraterrestrial world. It would appear that the main weakness of all three is the authors' erstwhile efforts to maintain as detailed an imaginative construct as possible: an effort which results in a plethora of description at the expense of actual narrative action.

In 'Escape Attempt', Saul Pepnin, an historian, gets Vadim and Anton to allow him to accompany them on their vacation trip into space. Rather than going takhorg hunting on a known planet, he persuades them to visit an uninhabited planet. The hellish conditions they discover there among the wretched inhabitants, whom they had not expected to encounter, are truly frightful. 'This was a dark misery, an anguish and a complete hopelessness ... you felt an indifferent despair when no one hopes for anything, when ahead there is nothing but death, alone in an apathetic world.' Their attempts to help the poor people are rebuffed, and they seem to be totally powerless to do anything about the wretched conditions they've encountered. The time travel requirements necessitated by Saul's eventual revelation of his true identity make this strange world even stranger and harder to comprehend.

In 'The Kid from Hell', the main character is a professional soldier named Gack, a member of the Fighting Cat troop who are at war with 'the ratcatchers'. Grievously wounded, he is removed by the supposedly benevolent Kornei to Earth, where he is overwhelmed by the architectural, zoological and edible creations of this, to him, new world. However, he soon develops a strong suspicion of Kornei's ultimate motives. It appears possible that the more-developed Earth is simply trying to mediate and bring to a conclusion the seemingly fratricidal conflict on Gack's home world, but the motivation for such an action remains an elusive, and possibly sinister, one. The protagonist's eventual return home is somewhat abrupt and inconclusive.

In 'Space Mowgli' an expedition from Earth tries to terraform another seemingly uninhabited planet by altering its flora and fauna. This effort is made on behalf of the people of Panta, whose sun is about to change, which will make their home planet uninhabitable. The expedition encounters the destroyed remains of a spaceship from Earth, with the bodies of the husband and wife team who manned this expedition several years earlier. They encounter 'The Kid', who believes himself to be the sole inhabitant of this world. He is their offspring, and it appears that the subterranean-dwelling natives of the planet worked to help him survive by altering both his psyche and his physiognomy. Dissension among the four members of the expedition from Earth highlight what is a largely unresolved development of the attempt to use 'The Kid' as a conduit for contact with this extraterrestrial race of beings. To this point in future time, such contact has been made with twelve such extraterrestrial races, three of which are non-humanoid. Of the remaining nine, only three have chosen to have any contact with Earth; thus the importance of this expedition's findings. Once again, however, no definitive resolution to the issues raised by such contact is postulated; the effort seeming to be more to raise questions than to provide possible solutions.

Definitely the weakest of the three Soviet science fiction works I've read (the others being the superb Andromeda and the interesting Aelita), this book is nonetheless a credible effort at an imaginative understanding of what issues will confront the human race once inter-planetary contact becomes a regular reality. Although not all that engaging, still an interesting read.

With respect to this volume, I've only read "Escape Attempt" and "The Space Mowgli" so far, but that's enough for me to say that, based on these and many other Strugatsky stories I have read, they are among the most brilliant science fiction authors I can think of. Their stories, though sometimes difficult to follow, have two qualities that I love: 1) they explore big ideas and issues in an engaging way; and 2) while confronting serious/complex issues, they still somehow manage to create a wistful, whimsical mood that I find highly entertaining. Yes, it's science fiction, but it also always somehow reminds me of "Alice in Wonderland." (Stanislaw Lem is another science fiction writer who manages to combine whimsy with serious thought.) I can't recommend the Strugatsky Brothers enough. They are absolute masters of the genre and deserve to be much better known. P.S. I didn't like the third story in this volume, "The Kid from Hell," as much as the other two. It is nearly 100 pages, but seemed unnecessarily drawn out.

Самый цельный рассказ Стругацких. Этакий глубокий, аккуратный порез в мозг. Четко завуалировав под антифашизм и пацифизм мысли Саула им удалось провести свою книгу через цензуру и дать советским читателям огромную пищу для размышлений.

Originally a fun romp on a new planet, it soon turns deadly as three space explorers find themselves isolated in what appears to be a fascist concentration camp run by a Homo sapien adjacent alien species.
Another fine addition to the Noon universe, this story is ultimately the Strugatsky brothers’ bread and butter: alien worlds, fascist regimes, and deeper psychological struggles among the characters.
I also find it very unique that in the idealized version of Soviet Earth, humans have essentially stopped expressing negative emotions. I think this reflects their belief that once humanity fully submitted to communist ideals, people would become purely rational beings.
However, this contrasts nicely with the subplot of someone who had experienced hardship and tragedy in a previous age, reliving it again through this alien planet causing struggles with PTSD that our sheltered space explorers have no concept of.
Overall, I would say it’s a lovely short story that requires very little commitment to understand the overarching plot of the Noon universe.

Es ist interessant, dass die primitive Feudalgesellschaft auf dem Planeten Saula offensichtlich auf eine Kritik an sowjetischen Arbeitslagern abzielt (vormals reiche und einflussreiche Menschen werden als 'Verbrecher' von der Metropole in die eisige Peripherie geschickt um dort an unbekannten Maschinen herumzuwerkeln, von der sich ein technologischer Standortvorteil in einem zukünftigen Krieg erhofft wird), der Text selbst aber durchweg eine Lesart nahelegt, die die Parallelisierung mit dem Holocaust ins Zentrum rückt (Saul ist geflüchtete KZ-Häftling, der von den Zuständen auf Saula sichtlich ergriffen ist). Noch interessanter ist, dass in der ursprünglichen Version, die der Zensur zum Opfer gefallen ist, Saul tatsächlich als sowjetischer Gefangener konzipiert war, die kritischen Untertöne die Zensur also trotz alledem überlebt haben.

Двое молодых людей, звездолётчик Антон и структуральный лингвист Вадим, собираются лететь в отпуск на космический курорт — планету Пандора. В последний момент к ним присоединяется странно ведущий себя человек по имени Саул (Савел Петрович Репнин), представившийся историком по XX веку и предложивший изменить маршрут, чтобы высадиться на любой неисследованной планете. На найденной планете, названной в честь пассажира Саула, герои обнаруживают цивилизацию, находящуюся на низком, феодальном уровне развития.

Фактически они находят концентрационный лагерь с заключёнными, сосланными сюда за различные преступления и находящимися на грани выживания в суровых природных условиях. Заключённые под контролем охранников на полигоне пытаются жестоким опытным путём и даже ценой своей гибели научиться управлять техникой, оставленной на планете негуманоидной сверхцивилизацией Странников. Спонтанные и гуманистические попытки героев помочь заключённым, договориться с охранниками и воздействовать на ситуацию в целом терпят крах.

Герои возвращаются на Землю с намерением передать информацию об открытой цивилизации Комиссии по Контактам. При этом Саул неожиданным образом исчезает, причём выясняется, что он не современник своих молодых друзей, а «дезертир» из прошлого, заключённый, бывший бронетанковый командир Красной армии, бежавший для спасения своей жизни в будущее из фашистского концентрационного лагеря, но впоследствии устыдившийся[1] своей «попытки к бегству» и решивший вернуться в своё время «доделывать своё дело».

"You haven't done anything bad; you've just done something strange." This is how Saul's crew reassures him after his unauthorized attempt to bring justice to the new planet. And this is how the Strugatsky Brothers raise one of the most important questions in the novel: Is a strange action necessarily bad? Is a bad action considered normal?

"Escape Attempt" (other working titles included "Love Thy Neighbor" – censored due to the religious allusion, and "Love Thy Distant" – censored due to the Nietzsche allusion) marks the beginning of social reflections in the authors' work, the initiation of the "real Strugatsky," as described by Boris Strugatsky himself.

The novel also introduces a literary device that would become recurrent in the brothers' subsequent works – the refusal to explain. "Furthermore, this is our first work in which we fully embraced the sweetness and magical power of refusal of explanations. Any explanations, be they science fiction, logical, purely scientific, or even pseudoscientific, were deliberately omitted. How delightful it is to tell the reader: 'This is how it happened, but why it happened, how it happened, or where it came from – these details are unimportant!' Because the essence lies not in those aspects, but rather in something entirely different, something that the story itself revolves around."

This book contains three 100-ish page stories from the Noon Universe, incidentally the second, eighth and seventh in the Noon Universe, and despite some people protesting at this breach of chronology, I don't think it matters that much, since the Noon Universe is already connected relatively loose. The seventh contains more references to the rest of the Noon Universe, but that's all.
So, here are the stories' mini-reviews:
Escape Attempt (the second): 3.5 stars, some of Strugatsky's slightly more average in quality fare, a story about how the advanced, peaceful humans in the future, can't comprehend the sheer brutality and inhumanity of the feudal system.
The Kid from Hell (the eighth): 3.75 stars, a sort of reversal of the previous story, about a soldier on a more primitive planet being taken to the future Earth, feeling trapped and threatened under peace.
Space Mowgli (the seventh), despite its atrocious English title is...... 5 stars. Pure genius. Incredibly immersive, tense and thrilling, and even better than Roadside Picnic, probably gonna do a review for that novelette only.
So, on average, 4.08 stars.

Повесть АБС «Попытка к бегству» мне показалась примечательной. В ней обыгрывается ситуация столкновения высокоразвитой цивилизации с цивилизацией намного более низкого эволюционного уровня. (Также в ней присутствует и иррациональный, внелогический компонент концовки, тоже являющийся приятным «дизруптивным» элементом.) Авторы опирались, по-видимому, на марксистские положения об эволюционных этапах общественного строя или уклада и технико-экономических способов производства. Однако существуют также модели эволюции и развития сознания (как индивидуального, так и коллективного), описываемые Жаном Гебсером, Кеном Уилбером, Клэром Грейвзом, Юргеном Хабермасом, Лёвинджер/Кук-Гройтер и другими. По-моему, повесть служит прекрасным примерном возможного столкновения развитого рационального мышления с чувствительными плюралистическими компонентами, руководствующегося высокими идеалами и возможностями высокотехнологичной цивилизации развитого коммунизма (как это выражено в тексте по факту, скорее оранжевый уровень по спиральной динамике — обобщённой модели, основанной на трудах Грейвза; рациональное мировоззрение по Гебсеру и рациональное эго по Уилберу, возможно с плюралистическими вкраплениями), с представителями цивилизации, которая находится, как минимум, на 2–3 уровня ниже в стадии своего развития — то есть на стадии магико-мифического (красного) мировоззрения, исключительно руководствующегося властью силы и динамикой господ и рабов. Показан межуровневый конфликт и огромная трудность в установлении коммуникации (и невозможность её вести на равных). Конечно же, повесть отражает какие-то аспекты советской истории с её «коммунизацией» и «социализацией», концлагерями и проч., когда идеалы высоких стадий сознания воплощались в обществе, не готовом к такому грандиозному скачку через уровни сознания. В тексте присутствуют пригорошни интересных концепций и подступов, например описание биоэнергетической медицины (психохирургия) и идеи биоблокады в высокоразвитой цивилизации XXII века. Проникают в повесть и сновидные к��мпоненты (необъяснимый скачок во времени), да и сама она может рассматриваться как сновидческое отражение трудных реалий двадцатого века и более широкой истории человечества.

С начала повесть виделась как еще одна космическая одиссея/эпопея в духе "Пути на Амальтею", только действие теперь происходит в мире "полудня". Группа молодых людей живут, занимаются спортом, общаются на какой-то станции и готовятся к полету к Пандоре, толи чтобы исследовать толи чтобы охотится. Но все меняется с появлением таинственного человека, представившегося как историк-архивариус Саул Репнин, человек странный и чудаковатый просит отвести его на какую-нибудь слабо изученную планету и оставить там одного и о дивный новый мир молодые космонавты соглашаются, век где-то XXII на дворе и слетать к далеким безымянным звездам наняв космический корабль все равно что арендовать корабль и попросить сплавать на необитаемый остров, да не обычно, но ничего сверх того и вполне допустимо. И вот чудо техники уже на следующий день высаживает наших героев на планете с числовым номером, сразу названной Саулой, в честь нового поселенца. Не успев выйти из корабля, они обнаруживают мертвые тела людей, чуть позже стаи хищных птиц, странные механизмы и остатки техногенной катастрофы. А полетав над планетой вообще обнаруживают группу людей, сбившихся в стадо которыми руководят люди в шкурах. Молодые космонавты пытаются им помочь, но те их только пугаются и убегают, преследуя их астронавты попадают в деревню, где царит что-то среднее между первобытнообщинным строем и рабовладельческой структурой.
1. Саул скорее всего человек из двадцатого века как то очутившийся в будущем, и его вполне логичные и понятные выводы о том что происходит на планете, сталкиваются с странной и немного пугающим мировоззрением людей будущего которые даже не могут в мыслях представить что человек может причинить зло другому и что есть такие понятия как злоба, корысть и т.д. Странно по мнению авторов люди будущего видимо совсем забыли про банальную подлость, а это пожалуй еще более фантастично чем корабль за день преодолевающий миллионы световых лет.
2. Вот дочитал повесть, как и предполагал Саул из 20 века непонятно как попавший в будущее, этого момента авторы конечно не объяснили. А вообще повесть понравилась, не смотря на дикость представлений о людях будущего, которые забыли, что такое "плохо".

Текст, с которого началось моё знакомство с творчеством Стругацких. Сразу узнаваемый, ёмкий и ловко провоцирующий на дискуссию стиль.
С точки зрения проблематики, приквел к Трудно быть богом.
Прослеживается интересная параллель нуль-транспортировки

— Они не возвращаются в первую, — сказал он. — Это нуль–транспортировка, понимаете? (После каждого слова Саул истово кивал.) Элементарная нуль–транспортировка. Кто–то использует это место, чтобы перегонять технику на большие расстояния кратчайшим путём. Может быть, на тысячи километров. Может быть, на тысячи парсеков. Неужели непонятно?

— Примитивные автоматы, — пробормотал он. — Постоянная скорость, постоянные интервалы… Стоило из–за них сворачивать пространство…

Таким образом, в обоих случаях описывается мгновенное перемещение завязанное на точки, неким образом соединенные в пространстве высшей размерности за счёт изменения геометрии пространства — невозможно игнорировать наличие сильнейшей физико-математической интуиции Бориса.

Escape Attempt by Strugatsky Brothers

This one was great.

The tone of the second work within the Noon Universe is dark and depressing. The joy of communist utopia, of funny situations and ideas, is gone. As a loose tie-in, it starts similarly innocent, only to quickly spiral out of control and descend into the depths of mystery thriller, forcing the main characters to become more and more horrified with each new discovery. I loved the way their regular communist mindset was projecting onto the new reality, loved their somewhat grotesque solutions to the presented problem. Especially when clashing with Saul's worldview, brash and fearless, aimed to immediate action.

The whole thing with Saul going back and forward in time was weird, but acceptable. The way I see it, the work tells you an important truth on escapism. You can perform an escape attempt, but the problem would always find a way to snuck in your safe zone. Do not run away, but face it will all your might.

In a way, Escape Attempt can be viewed as a prelude to Hard to be a God . Both bounce around the themes of humanity trying to change another society in their likeness. The only difference is that this novella sets the ground for such an intrusion, whereas the latter shows it mid-action.

It was a fun ride, I can already see the start of the Noon Universe altering from its upbeat path. Intrigued to see where it goes next.

Каждый раз меня удивляет, как в одно и то же время, благодаря окружающему социуму, похожие идеи приходят многим писателям и как они интерпретируют их в новых формах и видах, со своим набором мыслей и сюжетных ходов.
Время космического энтузиазма, время бесконечной веры в человека, в его духовный и технический рост. И в то же время понимание, что места для несовершенства еще много и есть куда стремиться.
Не знаю, задумывали ли Стругацкие уже свою эпопею, но тут заложено множество элементов, которые будут развиты позднее: Странники, развитые смотрят на неразвитых, сложность соединения разных культур, стоит ли быть колонизаторами и спасать людей или дать развиваться самостоятельно? Набор этических проблем, на которые и сегодня не очень-то есть ответы.
Книга небольшая, наполнена действием и оставляющая простор для самостоятельных размышлений.

Аудиоформа. 4.5 часа.
Слушал не очень внимательно, но почитал потом пересказ и критику. Узнал про принцип "необъяснения", про роль повести в творчестве Стругацких. Я пока что их, после пары повестей, так и не распробовал. В детстве/юности не читал, т.к. были слишком серьезными, а после возвращения в чтение через 15 лет - пока что не кажутся увлекательными в должной степени. Надо бы какой-то их роман выбрать. Произведение покрупнее.
Так что путешествие на Пандору (привет Кэмерону и его "Аватару") не показалось мне особо интересным. Люди будущего на дикой планете столкнулись с дикарями и угнетателями, что одному из них (который, на самом деле, тоже с секретом) очень напомнило концлагеря 20-го века. Приключения скучны. Философия не абы как цепляет.

Per certi versi questo romanzo breve è il precursore di "E' difficile essere un dio", nel senso che tratta una tematica che sarà più ampiamente sviluppata in seguito dagli autori. E' questo il momento in cui gli Strugatskij acquisiscono il loro stile peculiare. Il "rifiuto di spiegazioni" (otkaz ob'jasnenij) viene messo a punto e funziona alla grande. Cioè, per esempio, gli autori non intendono in alcun modo spiegare come abbia fatto Saul a spostarsi in avanti nel tempo, partendo dal XX secolo... Mi è piaciuto subito. A quanto pare, ci sarà presto anche una serie TV...

Неоднозначная книжка. И хорошая и плохая.
С одной стороны история вполне реальная. Изнеженные цивилизованные люди попадают к "дикарям" такое и сейчас может вполне произойти. Тут даже не нужно лететь на другую планету.
С другой стороны абсолютно нереальная, так как подразумевается, что люди убрали в себе все звериное и стали очень классными и пушистыми. И вот только осталось отсталое общество, которому нужно прожить свое развитие. Но кажется это не так. Любой человек носит в себе частичку звериного и нужен только удобный момент, чтобы дать этому звериному захватить власть над человеком.

Эту повесть нужно прочесть перед тем, как захотите прочитать широко известное произведение Стругацких "Трудно быть богом". Я немного жалею о том, что прочитал её намного позже "Трудно..". А повесть и по хронологии написана авторами раньше и по одной из основных мыслей является в каком-то смысле приквелом истории Руматы. Эта такое компактное изложение моральной дилеммы, с которой столкнётся Румата, это неизбежность истории и невозможность её изменить.

Неплохо; можно сказать, что это фантастика не "социальная", а "культурологическая". Мне очень жаль, что этот жанр так плохо развит: почему нет серии книг или рассказов, посвящённых проблемам культурных различий между землянами и инопланетянами? Тема-то благодатная, из неё можно выжать не меньше интересных загадок, чем из азимовских Законов Роботехники.
Концовка, однако, слита. Не люблю, не люблю недосказанностей и нерешённых тайн, ни в жизни, ни в книгах.

Братья Стругацкие, как всегда, на высоте. В голове не укладывается, что 60 лет назад они так тонко, так умело поднимали вопросы, которые актуальны и поныне. Вмешательство в естественный ход истории, наивный юношеский идеализм, упорное неприятие, даже непонимание, чужой точки зрения. И, как обычно, ненавязчивый юмор и глубина диалогов - как их визитная карточка.

интересная мысль, что невозможно заявиться на планету, пропустить несколько этапов эволюции и насильно привести к финишу. что обязательно надо выстрадать, научиться.

эти два чела, конечно, супер наивные. но приятно читать про такое будущее, оптимистичное.

концовка неожиданная, я сначала не понял, потом вроде чуток понял. надо будет почитать еще книги из полуденного цикла

Not bad, but time travel in the same timeline, and a frankly-suspicious behavior would've surely alerted that something was seriously off even before taking off from Earth. The book's more of a parable on colonialism rather than anything else, really.
