This is a collection of ten military SFFH stories written in English by a Romanian author. I read some of his previous works in Romanian and liked them, so I was curious how they sound in English. And I must say, they sound pretty good, even if military SF is not my thing.

Here are my thoughts on them:

ZMB 1. Tigermen & ZMB 2. Molokan –not necessarily related, they feature the same main character and both follow cases of some presumed biological threat. Too gruesome for me. 2/5

The Padojd Trites – the consequences of a close encounter between humans and a primitive society on a remote planet. It reminded me a bit of RCW’ Bios and MDR’s The Sparrow. 3/5

The Mir.322 Case – in a world ruled by two AIs, humans were exterminated being flawed and cyborgs are being rewarded with living tissues to become the perfect humans. Until one of them makes a discovery… 4/5

Shaman 1. Kurgan & Shaman 2. Maple Heart – two fantasy stories featuring a shaman and his otherworldly powers. It would have worked better for me in a fantastic realm than in a 20th century Russia. 2/5

God Tears – great idea and the most intricate of all. A sci-fi story about an unexpected finding on a far away Earth-like planet. 4/5

Tolya and the Ankylosaur’s Death – time machine exists but makes only 50 years jumps. Presumably… A group of soldiers makes the jump, however nothing goes as expected. 3/5

The Dark Room – a dark and depressing horror story involving an alternate reality were people go missing and monsters appear instead. 2/5

Red Snow in Kaperka – a woodsman is trying to solve the mysteries of some brutal murders; I liked the animal connection here. 3/5

Bottom line: although they are well written, with nicely shaped characters and strong worldbuilding, the general setting and subject of most of the stories did not appeal to me. I felt they are written in black and white, with the myriad tones of grey in between. There is no ‘color’ in the stories. The winter, the war, the bleak atmosphere, the crimes, the brutal characters, the atrocity of the actions, all these build up a terrifying world, which left me depressed. Therefore, not the best choice to read in a holiday.
2.7 stars rounded up.

But for those of you who like military SFFH and don’t mind gory details, might be right up your alley.
