Anna is now a rear admiral much to her horror. She had finally become comfortable being the Eastar NIA Station Chief. She had been successful in the position, made good friends, and found bad guys to chase and puzzles to solve. But that success had catapulted her into the position of Director of the NIA stations–all thirteen–and far out of her comfort zone. Ironically, Anna finds herself bored–admirals don't do work, they give it to someone to do. And she has a master chief as a secretary, a lieutenant aide-de-camp, and thirteen commanders and their staff to do the work. But she suspects not all of her commanders support their new, very young admiral, or are doing their jobs, or are competent. But has no way to resolve the feeling as twelve of those commanders are on distant systems, giving them a great deal of autonomy. A personal request from Admiral Webb to look into a friend's missing daughter solves the bored problem and provides an excuse to visit her NIA stations. The subsequent investigation uncovers a criminal organization which has been kidnapping women across the UAS for the past six years. The kidnapped women meet a very specific profile which isn't obvious. Anna manages to unravel the mystery only to find stopping the organization and freeing any of the kidnapped women will take years, during which time more women will be kidnapped and fewer women will survive to be saved. Unless… Anna is willing to abuse the laws that safeguard the innocent and protect the criminals and to irritate very influential people the criminals' activities support. Actions that would open Anna to prosecution and jail and to attempts to retire her early and permanently.
I was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois, and joined the military right out of high school. I served twenty-two years in the United States Air Force as a certified internal auditor. While in the military service, I lived in seven states and two foreign countries, and obtained two degrees: a BS in mathematics and an MS in computer science.
After I retired from the Air Force, I secured a position with Digital Equipment Corporation, located in Bedford, Massachusetts, as a software course developer and instructor. I worked twenty-two years at DEC and held positions as a course developer, course development manager, software engineer, and software engineering manager.
Today, I’m retired and live in Tucson, Arizona, with my wife of fifty-three years. My daughter and two grandchildren live in Maryland. I began writing several years after I retired, when I was seventy. My first two attempts remain in my desk drawer—good ideas, but poorly written. Subsequently, I co-authored, with Jeanne Tomlin, three fantasy novels: Talon of the Raptor Clan, Scales of Justice, and All My Friends Have Wings (young adults). Talon of the Raptor Clan was sold to ePress-online Books and came out in July 2009. Since then I have written two additional novels: The Laughing Hounds (urban fantasy) and The Riss Gamble (science fiction).
My hobbies for the past forty years have been kung fu and tai chi.
I am enjoying this series and this author. There is triggering material, but the author handles it with respect. Love the MC- female/ass kicking/smart/altruistic person♡ Possible longer review to come later.....
Things are happening all over the place! We see a little more of the planets. We start seeing more about how things are interconnected in the government of law enforcement.
Our main character is dealing with a pure management position where she needs to inspire people to follow her. People skills are not her strong point and some of the people she needs to lead are unpleasant. Their bad attitudes go up against her stubborn attitude, things get a little crazy.
So the storyline is very engaging. However the author has quotes all over where there is no dialog, and quotes in th middle of dialog. It just needs editing. Worse is when major character changes from Kris to Chris in this book.
Don't get me wrong. The story I good and in some places made me cringe... just the lack of editing is really impacting my njoyment.
Mr. Daems is the top in his field. His story is always believable and page turning. I have enjoyed all of his books. I wish He was 40 years younger so I could keep reading his books until the day I left this earth. The only way I can put one of his books down is when I fall asleep exhausted, eager to pick it up when I awake. A truly gifted storyteller.
The author spins a unique yarn with unpretentious writing and believable, fluid dialogue. While his heroine's story, itself is almost too fantastic, his story carries us past the implausible with ease. Each installment of this 4 book series left me delighted with the time spent reading.
Definitely one of the best of the series so far. I especially enjoyed that her personal side shows more in this book, talking about her time in captivity in the Shark, showing her emotions with the other rescued girls while at the same time still kicking but and taking names.
The commanding charm of this series is in watching the NIA team members play catch-up to their leader who guides them in expectation of their success . Her ability to enact a work-around interfering people, even to converting them onto her team is pure fun!
The story is very good. The narrator is absolutely GREAT. The narrator makes it easy to distinguish characters and captures emotions that really fit the characters.
The author has a formula - one that has been followed in each story. While the formula makes the writing somewhat predictable he provides quality writing and leaves me with the desire to read the next.
I liked this series enough to gobble them all up like candy. But like candy, this last book felt like a sugar overload. Either the series should end on a high note here or the character needs to step out of the spotlight and spend some time nurturing herself, her mother and the storyline. I don’t think the character could really get promoted any higher and still be in the business of actively ferreting out crime syndicates. After getting promoted after each book/big case, it started feeling formulaic.
This is a fast paced action series with a great MC in the traditional C.R Daems style. I have now finished book 5 so will give a full review on book 5.
