First things first, I love horror movies. I have been watching them since I was first allowed to have a television in my room at 8 years old. It was there in that room I shared with my little brother where my love for horror initiated, because those midnight movies scared the crap out of us. This book reminded me of that time, although this is a slasher in the vein of a Michael Myers, the Shape, an unstoppable force that is relentless and surprisingly resilient. The killer is a collector of souls, and we all know that the eyes are the windows to the soul soooooo. . . However, I don’t want to be "blinded" by nostalgia goggles. This was bloody, gory, fun like a grade B slasher. Bower has talent, but there wasn’t enough of a suspenseful build, and seemed a little trite. The ending twist is contrived like most schlock, which is not used as a pejorative here. Again, it was fun, but mediocre. Nothing to write home about, unless you don't mind schlock horror. If that's the case, you might like this. Although for me, Soul Eyes by Jay Bower is just an OK kind of story.

This book was a huge waste of time and money. I do not need descriptions of three different women's breasts before page 28. This book comes off as a horny teenager's attempt at writing a horror story. Characters are weak and no clear storyline existed.

So, so bad.

Female lead’s entire character is ‘nice ass’. Repetitive events, poor dialogue, nonexistent character development.

I hate eyeball things, so this one definitely disturbed me! And that is exactly what you want a horror book to do!

Great plot and just enough gore with a twist I didn’t see coming.

A great concept that didn’t quite hit the mark for me.

The character of Kyle felt very two-dimensional and didn’t come across as the 38-year-old man he was supposed to be. Instead, he felt more like the late-teen he’d been when he’d left Brownsville twenty years before. The other main character of Jules was much more rounded. Felt much more invested in her life and what drove her to do the things she did. A third character, Georgie, was also a lot more interesting than Kyle. Georgie and Jules both had powerful motives whereas it felt like Kyle wanted to be passionate and driven but, more times than not, he didn’t know how to do that.

The opening scene, along with subsequent scenes of the killer in action, were well-written, but after the third or fourth time of being told pretty much the same sequence of events in the same way, it got a bit monotonous and I found myself skimming over those parts. Likewise, the dialogue felt flat and unrealistic a lot of the time.

I really liked the whole idea and premise behind the book, I just couldn’t get as deeply invested with the characters or their problems/motives as much as I would have liked.

This would be a better read for a newly blossoming teen Horror fan, but probably won’t cut the mustard for the older, more hard-core fans of the genre.

Just listened to the audio of Soul Eyes. I absolutely loved the narrator he had me laughing at times with his accents.
This was a fantastic and creepy story. So many parts will keep you wondering what is happening... you will definitely be asking what the hell. Jay has a way of telling a story that will draw you right in all the horror.

The killer had returned.

If you're looking for a good, moderately scary but extremely gory B-grade horror story, well, rest assured that you can do a lot worse than Jay Bower "Soul Eyes". Which I mean as a compliment if not outright, um, high praise. I think. All kidding aside, this book is definitely an unabashed tribute to lower budget horror stories of all ilk - written or filmed - where you can pretty much tell from the start "whodunit". Still you'll want to stay and watch it all unfold in all its glory until the last scream fades away. So yeah, even though I wouldn't call this story suspenseful - far too much is revealed really from the first page on for there to be any real tension - it does definitely check off my "slasher" category for this Halloween reading season. And you could also add "serial killer" in there as well, even though I've already marked that one.

Your soul is now in my custody. I will treat it well.

The premise of the book is pretty straightforward, where once you realize it's all built around the verse "the eyes are the window to the soul" - which Bower paraphrases as "The easiest path for sin to enter was through the eyes…" - well, it all kind of makes sense in a extremely bizarre and truly gruesome way. I like how either the old or even the newest cover makes that abundantly clear. However, I did find Bower's structure was very repetitive with, for example, far too much focus on women's asses or the redundant way the "deeds" were carried out. I'll confess there were more than a few passages where I caught myself skimming over the text because "been there, already read that." Just too many scenes and too many actions were repeated too many times, which I guess helped this not wind up being classified as an official novella. On top of that, there's not a lot of character development or exciting and/or deep dialogue either; but let's be honest, this not the basis for a script that would have A-listers scrambling to land a part.

Oh God, no! It’s you! You’re the crazy murderer! No!

I don't really know what else to add and this has got to be one of my shortest reviews ever for a non-DNF book! I mean, I was entertained, sure. I don't regret checking this book out on KU at all, though I am glad I didn't put any money down (mentioning a "sawbuck" here might make for a great pun!). But if you ask me in a week what this was about, I'm not sure it'll stick with me enough to be able to fill you in. I will say though that if you don't particularly like your horror to be delivered in any way that requires too much thought to digest, then you'll probably love this a lot more than I did. It certainly avoids any mystery in the way that "it was never a question of if, just when" things were going to happen. I guess my tastes tend towards the kind of stories in this genre that folks like Joe Hill (and his dad, oh, whatshisname?) and Lindqvist tend to deliver.

Hope was shredded into nothing, replaced with despair and dark cold pits of anger.

What else? Well, the editing was good which is always something I look at. I will say this though: the book would have been a lot better if the author had cut out the last few pages or at very least the last few paragraphs. That last scene was just too clichéd and/or trite for comfort. Moviegoers would definitely not be taking their empty popcorn containers to the trash cans if that would be shown before the credits! But if I can leave with any lasting impression it would be that I think Bower has talent and potential, so I won't hesitate in the future to check out other offers by him. OK, now get everyone out of here so we can start pushing in the midnight showing crowd!

If eyes are the window to the soul, then can the soul be captured?

Our main character Kyle is accused of killing his girlfriend, the love of his life. When her body is found while Kyle is locked up, he is released, but the suspicion never leaves him.

Meanwhile, a little girl sees her father do some nightmarish things to her mother, and a new belief is born, as is a monster.

It's all in the eyes. But where have they all gone?

This is a short book but packs a lot into it. If gore and serial killers are not your thing, skip this one. I, however, am still a sucker for a good serial killer story.

This book weaves the past into the present, and you have more monsters than you know. The twist at the end was not unusual for experienced serial killer fans, so it may not be the most original. But the story is worth it.

The only part that bothered me was how interested Amber was in Kyle. She is a coworker half his age and comes on to him so strongly it's like watching a dog on a bone. I could not make that make sense in my head and it did pull me out of the story a bit.

I also appreciate how straightforward the story is. It's great to read a subtle mystery sometimes, where you wonder who the bad guy is and why. But Soul Eyes goes hard right from the start. The pure craziness and evil are never in doubt.

The story is predominantly set in the present, with references to 20 years ago when Kyle’s girlfriend was killed and the murders began. I don’t know if it was on purpose or an oversight, but the character of Kyle seems like he’s still a young man and not the grown-up 40-year-old man he is supposed to be. He’s likable, but I would have liked to see more depth for an MC.

This was a fun serial killer story alongside a secondary plot that was pretty depraved on its own. Another trigger warning for animal abuse, by the way.

I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed his book, considering I just randomly picked it at a book signing. But I am glad I did. 4 Stars.

If you LOVE your horror to be Graphic! Gruesome! and VERY viscerally disturbing;......this is for you!!

Kyle is accused of a brutal murder of his girlfriend Debbie, and he knows he had nothing to do with it. After he is released with no charges he leaves town. The murders stop. Twenty years later he returns to the small town and once again people are being found tortured, and missing one eye and murdered in the most gruesome ways!

Jay Bower is an author that i had never read or listened to however he will be one that I will closely follow to see and hear what is coming next. This narrator was SO good at changing the character voices that it just made this gory serial/slasher book so much fun! Did that sound kind of gross? As I said in the opening line to this review.....it is GORY, Gruesome and so much nostalgia going back to theose 80's and 90's horror slasher classic movies that I loved so much! NOT for everyone......this killer in here made Norman Bates and Jason Voorhees look very timid. I LOVE D this!

Remember that our eyes are the doorways to our souls!

i lessoned to this on you tube and it was a very good audio book. The stories about a preacher who is insane, he says the way evil gets in is through the eyes. His way of fixing this and making you pure again is to cut they eye out. When his daughter witnesses him cut her mom's eye out and kill her, its more than her mind can take. shortly after when its discovered how her mom died, authorities' step in and take her to live with her grandmother while her dad is on the run. Years later murders start happing the same way that her dad killed her mom. When a young woman's boyfriend is picked up for the murders everyone assumes it has to be him. Even when he is released, and his name is cleared with no killer caught the towns people still judge him as the killer. wanting a fresh start he leaves town where no one knows him. things wind up not going as planed and with no other options he decides to move back to town. All gos well with time no one remembers him but when murders start to happen again, he gets caught back up in all the scrutiny.

Eyes

Kyle is sitting in jail at the time his girlfriend Debbie is murdered, but the cops make him sit in his cell longer.

When he finally gets released, he saves up his money and leaves town as well as his dream of becoming a lawyer.

Twenty years later he returns to the town he left and also resumes his college still determined to follow his dream. Most of the locals have forgotten the murder of by gone years. He starts working at a hamburger joint where he meets Amber who is also in college. She's very interested in him despite the almost twenty year age difference.

I've given you the plot, but I dont want to give out any spoilers. I will say this though, be prepared for a vicious left hook as you travel into the mind of the author Jay Bower! This is definitely a must read book!

Soul Eyes is a fun, creepy, and slightly gruesome book that horror fans will enjoy.

I felt so much sympathy for the main character, Kyle. After a tragic past, all he wants is to go back to his hometown, find a simple job, and maybe some romance. Someone has other plans, though, and proceeds to bring up past troubles in a gruesome way.

Throughout the book, I was really invested in how Kyle was going to get through it all. The character development was really well done, in my opinion, and just when I thought it was going to be predictable, the author manages to add to it to keep it fresh and shocking. Nothing was a loose end, and it ended beautifully for a horror fan like myself.

🌟🌟🌟🌟
This is an entertaining and unique horror story.
Kyle returns home to find he’s being blamed for horrible murders, which involve one eye being cut out while the victim is still alive, and then brutally killed afterwards. Kyle is determined to get to the bottom of these horrendous murders!
This book has a good amount of gore, creep and twists! The story is well written and very descriptive! It’s a fast read and holds the intensity for the whole story.

Thank you to Jay Bower for an audio copy of this exciting book! I really enjoyed the narrator too!

*This book has been out for a bit, but can use some more love!*

Jay Bower may I ask what you have against eyes. This is the third book I've read that involves eyes... also please make more 😁
Soul Eyes is a quick read/listen and at times graphic. The first chapter really set the scene of what's to come.

Kyle was wrongly accused of killing his girlfriend and just about escaped prison but many still believe hes guilty.
Why he returns to his small town is beyond me but hey that's what he decides to do and shock horror killings begin again.
The only thing I didn't like about this book was I found his girlfriend overly annoying but that could be just me.

More eyes more eyes more eyes!!!!

Kyle returns to his hometown after nearly two decades and discovers everyone still thinks he murdered his girlfriend all those years ago. Despite his insistence that he definitely didn’t, people are suddenly turning up murdered in the exact same manner, which honestly doesnt help. Maybe coming back home wasn’t such a great idea.

Gosh was this one fun to read! I went through a wide range of emotions while reading it and was entertained the entire time. The violence was graphic (believe me when I say that you should proceed with caution if you have a thing about eyes) and I was emotionally invested in the characters. The storyline was creative and I enjoyed the ending.

I enjoyed this grisly little horror story – it actually had me squirming in my seat on more than a few occasions! I am very squeamish when it comes to eyes, and this story knows exactly how to play on those fears! There’s a killer on the loose, and an ending I never saw coming – but this is a quick spoiler-free review, so you’ll have to read it to find out what. Just don’t forget to blink when you read this one (you’ve got to look after those eyes, after all)!

The eyes are windows into the Soul, but you're going to want to keep your eyes peeled after reading this tale. You might want to keep that nightlight on as well...You know. Just in case.

This story will send shivers down the spine of even the most avid Horror reader. Why? Because it could happen, and deep inside you know it can. Don't miss this one if you want to spend a night tantalizing your mind and wondering, could it really happen?

The book is worth a read but feels like it has a lot of filler that really does not add to the story. Not to say I did not enjoy the book, I just would most likely not read it again. After about the tenth or twelve time the book mentions Amber has a "bouncy ass" or "swung her ass side to side" it was just like, okay I get it, she has a nice ass.... The eye removal parts made me squimish and were very detailed sometimes, but it wasn't overly disgusting.

Jay Bower can't miss in this horrifying tale of murder and, you guessed it, eyes! Soul Eyes has the perfect creepy factor, with just the right of air of mystery. The gore is shocking, but not gratuitous. This one really got to me because, well eyes. Damn you Jaya nd your obsession with eyeballs! Still, person icks aside, this is a stellar story that will draw you in, chew you up, and spit you right back out.

I LOVE horror and gore and everything in between, so this book sounded like something I’d love. I’ve tried so hard to get interested in this book, but unfortunately, I’ve had no luck. I’ve managed to get about halfway through it, there’s been no character development and I’m honestly not entirely sure what’s going on. I think the book has a great concept, but not so great execution. Props to the author for the concept though!

Good, but...

...the ending felt rushed. Not quite deus ex machina rushed but like "the deadline is in 20 minutes so I need to finish this now" rushed.
The concept, story, characters, etc were fine. I enjoyed all but the last 8-9% (kindle version).
I would give Mr Bower other works a read.

This was intense! I had it all figured out and then a massive twist hits you but that's not the end. When I thought how the story would proceed then there's another twist, right until the end. This was a short but full on novel which will make you cringe and disgust you all the way with enough blood and gore. How I like it! Can't wait to read more from this author.

This book was really good, the plot moved at a nice pace, and the ending was a twist I didn't fully expect. This would be a five stars, however I felt there were some things that (for my liking) were to obvious for the mystery, then some things which confused me once they were revealed as I couldn't understand how what happened truly happened or how it was possible.
