Easy Korean Reading For Beginners will help you have much more confidence in your Korean reading comprehension through 30 short stories about various everyday topics. If you’ve been learning Korean for more than at least a month now and feel like you are ready to start reading stuff, but you find regular novels and magazines too hard to begin with, our Easy Korean Reading For Beginners will be a great place to start.
I cannot recommend this book + the free mp3s from the TTMIK website highly enough! For beginners, it's really fantastic and probably the sole reason that I am no longer struggling with several very basic but very tricky aspects of the Korean language; how a basic sentence is structured (very different word order to any other language I know): pronunciation/sound change rules (this was not clear to me even after learning Hanguel without using this book to actually see/hear it working in practice): several very common expressions that I now hear everywhere and have become second nature to me (요즘에는 is just one example of this - after hearing it multiple times here, I don't have to even think about it anymore, when at first I kept mishearing it). You just don't get this kind of reading and listening practice from pure textbooks, but any other source is way too difficult when you're just starting out.
Each story has an audio track, where the story is read by 2 different voices, then repeated again slowly with 1 voice repeating the hard to pronounce words (clearly marked in the book), and then finally the vocabulary list is read out by voice 3. The audio tracks are available for free online, but I think the book is well worth buying for the transcripts and the really good focus on correct pronunciation. It's so well thought out and organised!
On top of that, the topics in these 30 "stories" (really short texts, really) are really charming and fun, not boring at all, which I think it amazing when you think how they needed to keep the language simple. Can't really complain about anything here, and I'm very excited to keep using TTMIK's books and materials for quality practice.
A good resource for beginners in Korean looking for a way to start dipping into reading in the language, especially since it incorporates vocabulary lists, audio files, and pronunciation guides too, so it trains not only reading but also speaking skills.
The stories cover a variety of topics and are the perfect length for beginners, however, the grammar and vocabulary are more suited for lower intermediate learners.
I loved reading this book. It showed me where I was good and where I was weak. The stories are just difficult enough to make a low intermediate like myself read carefully to get the nuances.
This is totally a must read for beginners in the language! I honestly thought the first chapters would be basic conversations with characters introducing themselves and all that kind of stuff you see on workbooks, but no! You learn useful vocabulary in every story and the illustrations add so much fun to it that you don't feel like you're just studying, I actually had fun and enjoyed all chapters as if I was reading a webtoon. I hope they release more books like this one for all levels of proficiency. 10/10 :)
In my opinion this is not exactly perfect for a complete beginner despite of the description in the title (easy and beginner). The vocabularies are quite easy and commonly used in daily life, but i don’t think the sentence structure is easy for a beginner. I bought this book when i was in my level 1 text book, i got frustrated because it was hard for me to understand the sentence. I would recommend to read it after you’re already reaching the end of level 2 text book or even better of you’re already in level 3 book. This book then becomes enjoyable when you’re in level 4 book
I had fun with this book. I needed a little break from intensive studying and this book served me well as quick lessons to help with retention. Most of the stories were easy to understand while other stories such as 병원, 치미, 안내방송 were a little bit more challenging due to the vocabulary words that I know.
Yes, if you are a beginner or intermediate level, I would definitely recommend that you try this books
The idea of this book is very nice, but even for beginners, the sentences and words are too difficult. On top of that, the choice to present the text hand written makes it really hard, sometimes to understand what the letter really are: is it a ㅇ or a ㅁ?
The audio and the explanations well done, as usual from TTMEiK.
the order of the topics seemed weird to me, and the topics themselves (i'm looking at you, dementia) are a strange mix... i don't really want to review this in detail, it's okay, but not balanced in terms of difficult and easy grammar and vocab. so it's simply a compilation of those that are imo too hard and those that are too easy, not a collection of medium difficulty level things.
+ Good layout. It's not a boring book. + The grading is good. Majority of these stories are good for upper-beginners but there are a few like the Dementia chapter that is higher level so you can learn new words.
I loved this book. It's a great way to study and practice reading for upper beginner and lower intermediate level learners! Has a wide variety of vocabulary and grammar, pronunciation guide, and translation.
A nice book for beginners. Simple sentences, frequently used vocabularies and some cultural notes here and there to understand the context better. As a non beginner, it's fascinating to see there are a lot of vocabularies that I don't know. Good book, totally recommended.
