Read up until chapter 8 of book 3/7. 2 stars: it was okay.
This was a meandering novel, seeming much more like western fantasy than most xianxia. I quit because the mc's drive was very nebulous, and as more and more people came to find beef with him, the story seemed very contrived and meaningless.
Characters: 1/5 disliked The characters are all very one dimensional. In fact, most of the characters are zero dimensional, and do not even have a single important distinguishing characteristic. There are 30 names that are constantly repeated for the second half of the second book, and 20 of them are just identical cannon fodder. All the important side characters do not have their own motivations, and are characterized by how they interact with the mc: loving young lady love interest, fatty young master friend, wild kid who is mcs underling, strong beauty who is cold to mc, etc. Even the mc is bland. He's just a guy who is "smart" and can "learn anything" and "does research," pulling all kind of skills and abilities out of his butt when it is convenient to the plot. His driving force is to "help humanity" by "doing research," which makes for an understandably boring and forgettable plot.
Plot: 1/5 disliked On the subject of plot, the mcs inherent lack of desire to fight other people for resources and benefits means that he's halfway to being a passive loser mc. Is this secretly a jp ln? The mc is just "doing research" all the time while problems repeatedly fall into his lap. It is very boring and unrealistic. In other xianxia novels the mc gets into tons of problems as well, but that is because usually those mcs have no EQ and go around looking for fights and treasures. In this case this guy is such a shut in that his problems just seem like too much. Each problem, when viewed individually, seems to make sense. However, for one person to encounter all of these problems is far too unlikely. In the end there is nothing special about this story compared to other xianxias, aside from the passive mc.
World: 1/5 disliked This world-building is sub-par, even when compared to other xianxia. That's saying something. We have zero idea of the structure of the world in terms of power levels, and the mc always "happens to run into enemies" that are just perfect for his power level. The whole setup feels contrived and lame. We only learn about the world when it is relevant to the mcs enemies or abilities. The fact that the mc has OP creative powers to synthesize new abilities makes things doubly annoying, since really he should be a lot more comprehensively powerful than he is. He should just go sit in a cave for 100 years and come out strong.
In the end I guess this should be a 1 star. While I think of every part as a 1 star, I still think this was a 2 star xianxia, since the bar is so low.
Incredible stuff, read the whole 1000 or so pages of book 1 in a day.
Easily the best work I've read within the genre alongside Ze Tian Ji and it honestly stands up well against most modern action based fantasy. This stands out by breaking from Xianxia convention, the protagonist has some unique lucky breaks but they do not govern his journey, instead it's competence and intelligence that are the real trump cards here. Instead of simply being overpowered characters are instead outthought and outmaneuvered by the protagonist.
I found this pretty much by random and I cannot stress enough how far above the most commonly recommended staple works of the genre it is.
There's a lot to like about this book: the main character is especially observant and audacious and gets his way often through coercion or manipulation which keeps the tension building throughout the book as plot stacks upon plot. There's also a lot that doesn't work very well in my opinion like the long historical interludes and heavy explanation of internal thoughts instead of more natural integration into the narrative.
Su Chen doesn't always chose the moral route and it's hard to root for him when he beats servants, tortures, and extorts but that makes the book stand out among books with more comfortable main characters.
With a MC with a god complex (the irony is huge when you actually read the book) and divine plot armor (again, the irony), the fact that I know that he will always win in spectacular fashion without any fanfare, and the awkwardly inserted backstory when you least want it, it's a wonder that I actually finished this. So glad it's over. Good luck if you still want to read it after reading this review.
Although It did set the narrative and was an interesting starter, I wish it kept his eyes being blind and instead of him fixing it as that was one of the things that drew me to read this. but besides that, I thought it was a good start.

MC loses all sense of morality so I gave up. Overall the plot was a little interesting with the MC losing his eyesight causing many problems in his family but this is a looong novel and I don't have time for this.
A really strong start with amazing world building and clever MC but the final arcs and reveals were very rushed and honestly it's an unfortunate wasted potential, but I still recommend reading it because it's fun !
This is a great book, and I loved the world building and character development. the story is 10/10 but I hate the harem aspects that were introduced later in the story.
