Where light is, shadow cannot go.

The king is dead - killed by the same assassin intent on ending Larkin’s new reign as queen. Worse, the White Tree is dying, and with it, the magic the pipers use to defend themselves from the wraith. The same magic Larkin has used to keep the curse inside Denan from spreading. Once that curse reaches his eyes, he’ll be worse than dead. He’ll be an inhuman mulgar bent to the will of the wraith.

As Larkin runs out of options, a message arrives from the wraiths. They will spare Denan, cleanse and return every single mulgar in their service on one condition: Larkin must heed the darkness growing within her and become one of them.

It’s an impossible and deadly trade. But if she’s to defeat the wraiths and solve the curse that has plagued their kingdoms for centuries, it may be the only choice she has left.

Well.......how do I review this... How many stars do I give this. Man. I put off reading this book until it started to bug me. I remembered everything from the first 2 books and I needed to end this story in my brain. I needed this poor girl to have happiness but I was not ready for what she was put threw in this book. The only books I have read to compare it too is The Hunger Games and the Bible. This poor girl goes thru a lot to save her people. There is fighting in every chapter. She and everyone she loves is just tortured. It made the sweet happy moments so sweet but dang it was hard to read. I will spoil it and tell you all ends well cause this author puts her characters threw hell and I was not sure what she would do at the end. It is well written, each fight scene is so well done. The whole ending was such a surprise. These are not books you can predict. I loved it and hated it and just wanted it to end but didn't want it too.
These are adult in the violence, this would be a R rated movie. The main characters are hurt and tortured multiple times in a thousand ways. The zombies are awful made worse because they are friends of theirs. The violence was worse in this one then in the others. There was so much death.
There is fade to black sex, with kisses and nothing too detailed. That part is 17 and up.

Book three! The final installment! This has been such an interesting series, unique to me in it's plot and setting. I really like changing up what I'm reading to keep things fresh and books by this author always do that for me. I'm not normally a fantasy reader but I make an exception for this author.

This book was long. And not very happy. There were a lot of bad things happening with lots of different characters as the story marched toward that very climactic ending. I think I had a harder time with the violence and struggle because of where I am personally in this crazy year. I find myself longing for happy escapes instead of turmoil and fighting. Because of this and by no fault of the author, I had a harder time reading this book.

I did love how the author surprised me with things in this book. It didn't go where I thought it might go originally and I like when that happens. I also really enjoyed Larkin's personal development from the beginning of this series to the end. I also loved the relationship between Larkin and Denan. 💙

This series is one you must read in order. There is no way you will have a handle on all the characters and the plot if you don't.

Content: high violence (descriptive), killing, death. Innuendo and intimate relations between a married couple with no real descriptions, but you know it happens.

- I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions expressed are my own.
3.5, rounding up

It was a long wait for this book--I read the first two in February, thinking it was a duology, and then the book's release was delayed twice--but it was worth it. It was a very nice finale.

Now, I didn't love it quite as much as I did the other two, but seeing as this installment is the most fraught with danger, death, hopelessness, and fighting, that makes sense--this is, after all, the installment with the grand finale, where all is revealed and the stakes are their most pressing. The things I enjoyed the most from the first two were less present by merit of what this section of the plot was focusing on and the fact the tone is much more serious and somber.

The writing was fast-paced, engaging, and the story is rife with a lot of action and it has good emotional beats. The characters endure a lot of things and it's easy to be affected by the story; I felt sad and hopeless when things were looking down, I felt excited and hopeful when they were looking up.

One thing I didn't much care for though was the attempt to redeem Larkin's father and Garrot, the master druid. I felt like the things the two of them did weren't really forgivable, in the end, but I guess that's ultimately why .

Overall, a really great fantasy series! The plot was nicely complex and I really liked Larkin and Denan's relationship. I recommend it highly.

Wraith King is the spellbinding conclusion to the Forbidden Forest series, following Larkin as she's trying to find a way to save her people and the dying magic. I've highly anticipated the book ever since I read Piper Prince and it did not disappoint. It was a great finale, to a great series.

I tried to read the book slowly in order to savour every moment, but I got so immersed in the story that I was unable to put it down. It's been hours since I finished, and I still get tears in my eyes when I think about it. I loved this book and it's bittersweet that a series I have enjoyed so much has come to an end.

Wraith King is the darkest in the series - the stakes are high, and it's filled with death, danger and fighting. I was at the edge of my seat throughout most of the story and sometimes it was heard to read through all the tears. Though my heart broke too many times to count, the book is not all darkness and sorrow. As always, there's a good balancing of light and dark, hope and despair. I love the banter between the friends and how they always take care of each other, no matter what is thrown their way.

I loved returning to the world Argyle has created and to once again meet the characters I've grown to love. It's been a pleasure to follow their journey and to watch them grow. Despite the dark setting, there is so much love, the sweetest of friendships and unbreakable bonds. The setting is just as magical and imaginative as in the previous books, and Argyle's vivid writing really makes the world and the characters come alive.

The plot is fast-paced, and you can really feel that it is the finale. It's intense, action packed and suspenseful. I enjoyed the clever and daring twists and turns throughout, and I did not expect the direction the story took in the second half.

Wraith King really is the perfect conclusion to a magical, thrilling and emotional story that will always have a special place in my heart.

3.25 - liked it but also didn't like it at all

Well, this was...a book.

This book wraps up Larkin's story, princess of the Alamant, and part of a solution to a problem the Alamant has has had for three hundred years: the wraiths.

Three hundred years ago, they were cursed to not have daughters, and their sister city, Valynthia, fell. From Valynthia's ashes rose the wraiths, evil beings that only want the end of mankind, and a single cut from their blade will turn you into a mulgar, a mindless, undead soldier.

This book picks up in the Alamant, several months after the battle of Druid's Folly. The Alamant is now determined to attack the wraiths at the source: Valynthia. To do this, they've allied with the very druids they fought only months before. But when they bring the druids into the Alamant, people start dying, and they 1) have to stop it, 2) figure out who's doing it, and 3) figure out why.

And ultimately, it boils down to Larkin, who the wraiths desperately want, and the fate the White Tree has for her.

I feel conflicted about this book. I think it's a fitting end to the series. It wraps everything up: explains who the wraiths are, why they want Larkin, what happened to the Black Tree, how to cure the mulgars, etc. It's nice to have an explanation and closure.

But at no point in this book did I enjoy reading it. It's fairly dark, hopeless, and tiring. The subject matter isn't easy. Solving the impending doom of humanity to basically zombie overlords is a monumental task, and it feels like a monumental task the whole book.

As in most of the books, Larkin is annoying. She continually makes dumb decisions. Thankfully, this is alleviated a little bit in the latter half of the book as she finally finds out the secret of the wraiths.

As keen as I was to be back in the Alamant in this book (one of my gripes about the last book was that there was no time spent in the Alamant), the portions of the book in the Alamant were a real slog to get through. They spend so much time going back and forth, quite literally, between different trees, trying to figure out who's dying and why, etc. It just didn't end

So yeah. I have conflicted feelings about this book. I can't say I liked it, but I did read it, and I am glad for the conclusion and especially the explanations.

Gasp.

I have been tricked!

I thought this was a trilogy! It's a quartet! There's another book after this! No! The third one ended just fine! There were no loose ends left to be tied. Why does there have to be a fourth book that's a prequel!?!

I shall resist its siren call, I don't need to know the origin of the curse, it was explained well enough.

At least, I shall resist the call until the summer, then I'll read the final volume.

This is the end of the story. The battle is won, the peoples are united. Friends are lost, and friends are found. Larkin grows.

I was surprised by the origin of evil. The final revelation was surprising as well, and I wasn't quite happy with it. It seemed a bit of a copout to me. We've been building up a particular thing as evil this whole time and then it's revealed that it's not evil at all and is really just a bunch of misunderstood people, and this other thing that is alien and not explained at all is the source of all evil. I don't know why that thing became evil in the first place. Why should an alien intelligence fixate on suffering? Humans fixate on suffering all the time, but the whole point of having an alien intelligence is that it is alien, different to us, so again, why would it fixate on the same thing that we fixate on? And why would the only other member of the species not fixate on it? Why can the one maintain a balanced view and the other can't?

Why are their only four wraiths? An entire civilization was overthrown in a sea of shadow, so why didn't more get made?

How did they manage to get seeds in the first place? There are male and female trees, one would presume that there had to be some sort of fertilization process, but how did that happen when the female was dead and cut off from the male?

I guess I do have unanswered questions, maybe the prequel will answer them when I eventually read it.

The one thing that I did like in here was the insistence that love and forgiveness both are a choice and once you choose them, you have to keep choosing them, even when it's hard.

A thrilling and heartbreaking conclusion to the Forbidden Forest series.
The fight against the wraiths and the darkness is escalating, and with Denan's blight threatening his life and sanity, as well as ardents and assassinations in the Alamant, it starts to look hopeless for Larkin and Denan as the ruling couple. Pushed to the edge, Larkin accepts in the end the sacrifice she was destined for and becomes a wraith to save her husband and the Alamantians - only to finally see the truth and realize the danger has not yet passed; on the contrary, the all consuming hatred is becoming more powerful and ominous.
This finale was epic. It had everything I could hope for, and even though it was longer then the average book length of what I read nowadays, I absolutely did not mind. It was packed with action, tension, and deep emotions, the consequences and sacrifices of war making it feel all too realistic. I was on the brink of tears in certain moments, but true to my connection with the main characters, I did not lose hope and fought with them to the end. I thoroughly enjoyed every page of this, and when Eiryss' story comes out, I'll be standing in the line to read the book as soon as possible.

In keeping with the treaty, the Black Druids have arrived to receive the thorns that will give them magic from the White tree. Even though they need the druids to kill the wraiths, Larkin still wants to kill the Master Druid Garrot. When an assassination of a high ranking Alamantian occurs, the ceremony is postponed. The druids arrived unarmed, but Larkin still feels they must be behind the assassination. When more danger arises, Denan and Larkin realize that the real danger is from elsewhere. I have vaguely described the plot, because I don't want to spoil the details. I received a free copy of this ebook from the author. This is my honest and voluntarily given review. To fully enjoy reading this book, you should read the previous two books first. This book is part of a fantastic fantasy series. The action is intense at times and very suspenseful. There are a couple of twists in the book that I didn't expect. I love the writings of this author because of her imaginative plots and strong characters. The love between Denan and Larkin, their strength of character, and their ability to do what needs to be done is so admirable. I recommend this series.

This was an exceptionally good series and this last book in the trilogy was even better than the ones preceding it. I was moved and I cried more than once. I hated that I had to put this down last night so I could sleep.

This was a story of sacrifice, love, courage, death and new beginnings. It was the story of magic gone wrong hundreds of years prior resulting an evil that grew with the sole intention of obliterating the human race. The resulting good versus evil battle that eventually had to take place was very well written. However, even better was the way the author wove the tale to show that things are not always what they seem and evil can overtake good, making good people become very bad. But all is not lost as redemption is possible. I adored the love story between Denan and Larkin from the beginning. It was nice to watch their love grow over the three books. I also loved the way the author depicted the strength and importance of family and friends, and the need to forgive. I highly recommend this series for everyone who enjoys fantasy and good clean romance with a lot of adventure and bit of magic mixed in.

Man what can I say!?! Ms. Amber Argyle has done it again. A classic tale of good vs. evil but with a daring twist. We see Larkin dealing with the after math of Druid’s Folley and almost losing her heartsong. Larkin’s fear of not being good enough for her people makes me love her even more. Because she knows that she is in charge of so many lives and I love to see her grow and coming into her Queenship. #LongLiveTheQueen
We see Larkin and Denan’s love grow stronger and I am HERE for it! #TeamDenarkin
The way this world's history, loss, pain and most importantly love is woven with just words leaves me SPEECHLESS…all of these emotions I felt in my core and it felt like I was right there with Larkin cheering her on and telling her not to give up!! The twist that nothing is what it seems made me 🤯🤯. Thank you for bringing us into your Forbidden Forest world-somethings are just worth it. Love and compassion truly conquers them all.

Breezed through the whole series - kinda couldn’t put it down, and one of those that kept me up way later than I should have stayed up a couple nights. When I read a whole series together I can’t separate a critique out for each book - but overall, I just liked it. Not the typical ‘quest’ fantasy novel, as advertised, it almost feels like the back story to a fairy tale. Flowed well and kept you wondering what would happen next. Enough interesting world building details, characters you’re pulling for or love to hate, good detail/descriptive and just well written. Really clever dialogue and descriptions of personal interactions. Also love seeing the feminine perspective in that’s so underrepresented in fantasy. A fair number of little timing inconsistencies/‘plot hole’ type mistakes - really wish it had a more polished editing job, because the quality of the novel deserved that. Overall, just a throughly enjoyable read.

As a fan of Amber’s Fairy Queen’s series, I was quick to sign up for her newest book, Wraith King, book three in her Forbidden Forest series. This book captivated the fantasy lover in me from the beginning until the very end. With the King assassinated, and Larkin now Queen, she will once again be forced to decide a path for her future. Spare Denan and the others by leaving her new life behind and become a Wraith? Or solve the curse upon their kingdom and fight the wraiths? Along the way the characters are faced with danger, fighting and even death, but also friendships and unbreakable bonds. The last book in this series, it doesn’t disappoint. I am really looking forward to the next world this author creates.

Oh my god I love this series so much...

Oh my god I love this series so much...even if it does make me cry ugly tears. I have been hooked since book 1 and was eagerly awaiting this book’s release. I had to go back and reread a couple spots in book 2 just to remember key events, like the treaty with the druids, Druid’s Folly and what part of the curse Sela broke. But oh the way this story developed and concluded had me on the edge of my seat and crying for my next chance to read a few more chapters between work and chores. Highly highly recommend this.

A war was about to happen. The King, Denan and the Queen, Larkin just became King and Queen as the King before was shot and killed with arrows. The White Tree they lived in was dying but no one knew what to do about it. This special tree had the magic they needed to be strong and live to the fullest. The Idelmarchians, the Black Druid was allowed to get some magic from this tree, but not everyone thought this was a good idea. This was a bad idea because the Wraiths were coming. Good reading.

Right now I am filled with the stories told in this series and can only say “Read it.”
If you love fairy tales, enchantment, strength and courage ... read it.
If you love love stories, and friendship stories, and good vs evil stories ... if you like stories with good and bad, and broken and flawed people like we all are ... read the series.
If you love heroes and heroines ... adventure, discovery, tragedy and triumph ... read it.
Such a great series.

Wonderful

I enjoyed this series. It was beautifully written, and with detail. I love the love story of Larkin and Denan, and how it has evolved since the beginning of their tale. I love their tenacity and honor, their willingness to give everything for the people they love. I've had the first two books in my library since last year, and I wish I would have read them sooner. I will definitely read more work by Ms. Argyle, as she is a new favorite.

Wow, no words

If you love a greatly descriptive world, twists and turns, a brave heroine who defies all odds; then this story is for you. I rate it 5 stars, would give more if I could. The author Amber Argyle created an amazing world, and I felt like I was really there, along side Larkin the main character. Trust me, this series is worth the read. It's now in my top 3 favorite series ever, with Harry Potter and The Hunger Games.

Oh wow. This story is just full of surprises and action! It is so beautifully written and set in a world that is equal parts horror and beauty. I loved how Larkin really grew into her role and found the strength to do what needed to be done deep inside. I was so happy how everything ended. I loved this story!

The beginning and middle of this book drag a bit, but the twist-ridden ending makes up for it. The earlier part of the book felt mired in politics and hopelessness; maybe it was just a bad year to read it? Also, there were quite a few editing errors (missed word, wrong word) throughout that threw me from the story. This is atypical for one of her books, so I'm going to chalk it up to the pandemic and a disrupted publishing process. 3.25 stars

Amazing series!

Love this story and all the characters. Larkin the main character often makes me a bit angry with her lack of common sense throughtout books 1 -2, but book 3 she seems to be doing better. Still doea some dumb things. But her husband Denan keeps her grounded and thinks things thru.
Off to book 4!!
