In a far off land called Fru Fru, lives a unicorn named Gertrude. Gertrude loves to eat pizza and chug cola...and she's got a bit of a weight problem. But she's awesome at helping her friends beat the evil baddies that try to spoil all of the fun on the Island of Fru Fru. This is her first adventure.
Gertrude, Starlight, and Nightwatch are three unicorn friends who live on the island of Fru Fru. Starlight interrupts her chubby friend Gertrude by calling her on the cell phone. Gertrude doesn't really want to answer. She is about to eat her fifth slice of pepperoni pizza. But Starlight has a real emergency. The island of Fru Fru is about to celebrate its 500 million year birthday and the magical cake that Starlight baked has gone missing.
To her chagrin, Gertrude agrees to accompany Starlight and their other friend Nightwatch to search for the missing cake. They know that Cray Cray has snatched it and hidden it in Captured Cake Cove. So the three friends set off on an adventure to fly to the thief's lair. Chubby has great difficulty keeping up with her friends. Once there they confront Cray Cray, who promises he will return the cake if they can find the right one.
Starlight reveals that in order to make the cake feed the entire island, she embedded magic in the recipe. Every time a slice is eaten, another one grows to replace it. Gertrude successfully uncovers their cake, but will Cray Cray live up to his promise. Can they rescue the cake in time for Fru Fru's celebration?
This chapter book has a clever plot, filled with lots of humor and just enough challenging vocabulary to keep the book interesting. I would recommend it for fantasy, magic and unicorn lovers. It could be divided up into sections for younger readers and read independently for middle-grade fans. Recommended for ages eight through twelve.
I am actually a adult... I hope that's ok. I chose to read this book because it reminded me of how much I always loved children's books as a kid, and how I still think they are wonderful!. I thought this book is so very imaginative and that even though she's chubby, she still can do great things. 😁
I give it a 4.5. I think my grandson would love this in all of its farts and funnies. Gertrude, Starlight and Nightwatch teamed together to get the cake back. The three of them are a pack of characters and the visuals in my head had me laughing and saying ewww simultaneously. Funny, funny! I did feel some kind of way though about using chubby even though shown in a positive yet funny light.
My 9 yr old son really enjoyed this book and laughed so much as we read it together. The book was entertaining from the start. There were some parts that I thought was rather gross, but he couldn't stop laughing and is looking forward to the sequel.
