Brave Beautiful Birth: Trusting God Through VBAC

Rate this book
After three c-sections, she just could not consent to another. So, with her fourth pregnancy, Jaimie Schrock decided to pursue the birth she felt best for herself, her body, and her baby: an unmedicated VBA3C. She fought to find a supportive provider, but realized that was only the beginning of the battle, and the journey, on which she was about to embark. Learning to leave her deep-rooted fears and her people-pleasing tendencies behind, Jaimie chose to trust her body and, ultimately, her God for a redeeming, healing, life-changing birth.

Reading this book was so encouraging for me. Wanting a VBAC after multiple C-sections is a lonely road, and reading from the perspective of a woman who has been there was healing for me and uplifted my soul. I loved that the author included her birth scriptures, it felt like a smile from God that I have all the same ones written down to encourage myself in this journeys. This book left me feeling empowered and excited to continue on my path and most of all gave me even more confidence to trust in the Lord and his plans for my birth and my life.

This is a book about Jaimie Schrock’s VBAC story. Several parts about this book were encouraging, as a Christian reader who also desires a VBAC. I appreciated how raw her writing was. She didn’t get caught up in attempting too many eloquent colloquialisms or witty ways of writing. She wrote from the heart about her experience.

I differ from her thinking about words. She believes that the words you speak to yourself determine your reality. I found myself skipping over the parts that focused on this belief. As a Christian, this word of faith movement has its pitfalls as ultimately God will establish His plan no matter what words we speak. As a momma of two precious babies in heaven, I tried that mentality of speaking words of life in to those pregnancies, and it didn’t make a difference in the end, which left me feeling betrayed by God. My faith has grown since then, but I know now it is much healthier to have a mentality of “thy will be done” and “thy will is good” and “please God make my will be your will”. All of this said, the word of faith implications were the only issues I had with the book, and it wasn’t a prevalent teaching throughout the whole book, just a few paragraphs here and there. And I know she comes from a sincere faith and isn’t trying to steer anyone into a wrongful use of words.

I found encouragement and accountability in my own VBAC journey through her writing, and plan on writing out scripture on flashcards as she did, setting up a worship playlist for labor, and working out more because of her enthusiasm in doing these things. I’m grateful for her story and would recommend this book to any Christian momma attempting to have a VBAC.

Brave Beautiful Birth is such an inspiring book about a mother who follows her heart to pursue the birth she feels is right for her and her baby. Her faith in God throughout the story is really encouraging. This book is really well written and easy to read. It can bring hope and inspiration to any mother planning a VBAC, especially if it's after multiple cesareans.

Great read! I finished this book in one afternoon. Jamie does a great job capturing the readers attention through her own personal experiences shared in her writing. A woman’s journey through pregnancy and vbac is broad, expansive and emotional. This book helps capture that emotional roller coaster and the hope that is available to all Moms as we pursue healing & wholeness in birth!
