Ko te wā o te raumati, kāore he kaupapa i tua atu i te mahi pohū! Kei tēnā, kei tēnā tōnu ake tino pohū. Engari, tērā tētahi tama, e kore e tika i a ia tana pohū.

This picture book embodies the kiwi experience in a way I haven't read before and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Superb illustrations, a great voice and a terrific tale that encourages personal growth. Highly recommended.
Winner of the Margaret Mahy Book of the Year Supreme Award 2019 and the Picture Book Award in the 2019 NZ Book Awards for Children & Young Adults, this is a story with a strongly affirmative message set midst that favourite Kiwi summer pastime, doing bombs in river, lake or harbour.
Illustrations contrast the close-up with the distant shots of waterside activity showing nearly everyone enjoying themselves trying to outdo each other with their many and varied versions of the bomb.
As one child tries, but fails, to copy others in their many and varied versions of the bomb, his self-belief shrinks. There's plenty of advice offered but his self esteem continues to fall. It takes a wise Nan to counsel, encourage and finally give this youngster the confidence to keep on keeping on. “Listen to your heart, to your mind, to the pull that's inside. Do it your way.” “My way?” “Yes, baby, all the way!”
It's easy to agree with the judges of the Picture Book Awards. This is one for the Christmas stocking, if you didn't spot it last year, that is. For readers and water bomb lovers, from age 5.
Geweldige art, erg leuke stijl! Mooie kleuren!
