Dreams do come true, especially at Christmas time!🎄
This is a sweet romance all about believing in yourself... it does take place at Christmas time, however I wouldn’t call it a Christmas romance, more of a romance that takes place during Christmas.... I felt this was a wonderful balance and will really appeal to those who aren’t crazy about Christmas books... this also is the second book in the Castle Cove series, but it can be read as a standalone... although the first book in the series is quite fabulous!
Lily is content working in the Castle Teashop, however her dream is to be a chef... The only thing stopping her is herself! Josh is doing what he loves, he is a photographer, but his parents are still trying to persuade him to be a doctor.... two people who aren’t quite comfortable in their own skin thrown together to plan a wedding... Lilly’s BFF is marrying Josh’s big brother, the thing is they are not in the country so it is up to Lily and Josh to plan the perfect Christmas wedding.... it was sweet watching Josh and Lily trying to build each other up, and in doing so they both became more comfortable with themselves.... their flirting was very sweet and occasionally a little awkward, but still sweet...
Something I really liked about this book and the previous book in the series is how prominent a part family played... Lily was raised by her father and older brothers... her estranged mother has re-entered her life, making things a little complicated.... josh’s parents have a different idea about his future than he does, and he has also felt second-best to big brother Paul.... as most familial relationships are these were complicated, but there still was tremendous love and a tremendous sense of family... also loved the family that all the villagers really were to one another, blood or no blood! As they say friends are family that you get to pick!
Recommend to those of you that are fans of clean romance with fabulous characters and a beautiful setting💕

Sometimes the best gift is to simply believe in yourself. In The Little Christmas Teashop of Second Chances, Donna Ashcroft illustrates this lesson beautifully.
Lily King has not had a good year. She has been dumped by her boyfriend, is at lose ends in her life and desperately in need of a change. When her best friend asks her to help organize her holiday wedding, Lily see this as an opportunity to showcase her talents. But things never turn out quite as planned, especially when it comes to weddings. Thrown into the mix is the groom's brother, Josh. As infuriating as he is, Lily is drawn to him in ways she didn't think possible again. As the big day approaches, will Lily be able to pull off the event of the season for her small town and best friend? ;)
I absolutely adored this book and all of its quirky characters. I am an absolute sucker for holiday stories and this one is a true gem. It has Christmas, a wedding, a romance and more. It's hopeful and beautifully written. If you are looking for a wonderful holiday read this season, look no further than The Little Christmas Teashop of Second Chances.

My thoughts: The characters were fun and I enjoyed getting to know them. The town was so cute and everyone helping each other out. Lily was raised by her dad and her 2 brothers. Her mom had run out on them when Lily was a baby. Now all of a sudden she wants to meet lily. Josh is the kind of guy who never settles anywheres and his career is photography, which his parents hate. They want him to be a doctor like his brother. Watching Lily and Josh interact and pull the best features from each other to show they can be who and what they want.
I received this from NetGalley Bookouture for an honest review.
This was a cute book of a woman finding her confidence and inner fire and going for her passion. All Lily wanted was to be a chef and all that was stopping her was her insecurity. The way she saw herself. Till she met Josh and their interactions gave her the confidence to leap for the brass ring
Donna Ashcroft has weaved main her characters in the plot brilliantly. It was endearing to see Lily blossoming in every page in the latter half of the book. Donna has etched Lily's character with a loving hand. Conversations and flirting with Josh was the highlight of the book.
Lily's overprotective father and brothers, her reappearing mother Aubrey, boss Simon all add to the plot. But some parts niggled me, the prose was too descriptive and pace went slow.
But I loved the book only for the romance and relationship between Josh and Lily. A car accident and first interaction between Josh & Lily
Her mobile started ringing again, making her turn towards the car.
Lily works at the Castle Teashop, but her dream is to work as a chef. Lily has two jobs, but when her best friend Emily ask her help to organise her wedding, Lily can't say no. Lily is not going to do it all alone, the groom's brother Josh is going to help her. While Lily and Josh are working together on such an important task, will there ignite a spark between them too?
I absolutely loved this book, it was so sweet and charming and had great characters. Such a fun and festive book, I'd definitely recommend to pick up this book during the winter/Christmas season.
I am loving the town of Castle Cove and all its inhabitants, to the extent that I'm wondering why on earth I didn't read Donna Ashcroft's first book.
This is a lovely feel good read, with a clear theme of second chances running through it - with Lily and Josh needing to give each other a second if not more chances, to get to know and trust each other, and also Lily has the opportunity to get to know her estranged mum too.
The title definitely doesn't lie as besides the second chances, and not just for Lily and Josh but other villagers too - there is a little teashop in the book, and its set in the run up to Christmas.
But yet given I have read lots of tea shop books and Christmas books, it is not overly themed towards either of them. They are setting and there is a lot of action in the teashop but its not your typical book that may make you hungry and it didn't make me feel festive either.
What I did feel was romance, there are many romantic threads woven into this lovely tale, and I really enjoyed reading all of them. Despite this being a standalone I do think that it may be best to read the previous book by the author, just to know more of the secondary characters back stories, as I felt there was hints but not enough for me to really know them properly.
What I did learn of the characters I really liked, and I just had a very enjoyable time whiling away a few hours reading this book. I would be interested in reading more from this author in the future.
Thank you to Netgalley and Bookouture for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.
What a joyful, uplifting read this was! Even with the word Christmas in the title this would be a gorgeous and inspiring read at any time of year - very highly recommended.
In this brilliant novel we're introduced to Lily King and the rather delectable-sounding Josh Havellin-Scott.
Lily is working in the local cafe and also restaurant dreaming of becoming a chef herself one day. She is tasked with trying to arrange a wedding for one of her best friends, Emily, who is stranded abroad during the countdown to the big day. The groom's, Paul, brother will also be helping Lily arrange the finer details in time for the Christmas wedding - enter photographer Josh.
I loved reading about their separate professional lives as well as potential romance and really felt the characters and their relationship develop. There truly is a theme of second chances running throughout the course of the book and Lily's mum (pantomime boo from me!) was a very interesting sub-plot.
There were so many elements to this book I found it difficult to put down - Lily trying to carve out a new career, Josh has an important photography exhibition to prepare for, Lily's relationship with her pushy mum, a dream wedding to organise and obviously whether love will find a way.
Lily was very relatable and seemingly always thinking of others first and wanting to please and as Josh was trying to bring out a more forceful side of her, in a good way, it did not feel fake or unrealistic. It felt like Josh was almost scared of commitment and tried to hide his good-natured character but as soon as he took in a dog in need of a home I knew he was all heart and was rooting for him.
I recently saw the first book in the series in my Kindle recommendations but I spend hundreds (& hundreds!) of pounds on books a year so, as it was a first-time author for me, I reluctantly carried on browsing. I was therefore delighted to receive this book to read and review prior to its release date - I can guarantee the next book I buy will be it's predecessor 'Summer At The Castle Cafe' - thank you Donna Ashcroft, you've made a new fan!
Many thanks to Bookouture via NetGalley for providing me with this advanced reading copy in exchange for an honest review.
I really enjoyed the first book in this series and couldn't wait to read the second especially as it was based around Christmas. Perfect book to read around a log fire and to dream of Christmas and friendship and romance and finding out who you really are. So heartwarning and perfect for Christmas. Really enjoyed the follow on and didn't want to put it down has you hooked very quickly and an easy read. Lily is lost her way in her life she works at the castle tea shop and loves it but dreams of being a chef but can see it slipping through her fingers. Her best friend is getting married but is stuck away so she's asked lily to prepare the wonderful day and age feels it's her chance to shine. But the grooms brother is a also asked to help organise it so when she is thrown together with Josh how will things go. Also lily hasn't heard from her mother for years but she gets a surprise letter from her and she meets up with her. Is her mother who she thinks she is or not and has she made a mistake contacting her or not. Can lily and josh find romance or are they just to opposite great Christmas read.
Festive Christmas story that is perfect for reading during the long cold winter nights while drinking your tea and eating mince pies . The cover is so bold and bright, very eye catching! Nice, makes me think of a Hallmark movie. I recommend it. Pub Date 02 Oct 2018 I was given a complimentary copy of this book from Bookouture through NetGalley. Thank you. All opinions expressed are my own.
Pleasing people is good, but don't put your own wishes on the back burner ...
The author has taken me to Castle Cove before and I loved that story. It's not easy to surpass a good book, but the author has shown she has not one single problem doing that.
Although the story takes place in the run up to Christmas, it's not soggy one. I, for one, am very happy about that. This has so much more depth. It's about standing up for yourself and chasing your dreams, about family and accepting people for who they are or what they want to be. Of course it is all spiced up with a lot of love and romance.
It was very hard to put this lovely and fluently written book down. I hope I will be able to travel to Castle Cove again real soon.
Thank you, Donna Ashcroft, Bookouture and Netgalley.
I loved this cost and heartfelt story. Josh and Lily are an endearing couple, with fun banter and sizzling chemistry. I loved that they each had to really find out who they were, and what they wanted before they opened their hearts to each other.
THE LITTLE CHRISTMAS TEASHOP OF SECOND CHANCES by Donna Ashcroft is just as delicious as its beautiful cover and is definitely a perfect read to snuggle up with on a cold evening.
Lily King knows what she wants and that is to be a chef but something seems to be stopping her from reaching her true potential and she isn't quite sure how to achieve her dreams. It doesn't help that her love life is a mess and her family a tad overprotective. When she gets a shot at making her dreams come true, Lily's life suddenly gets a lot more complicated - the mother who walked away from her when she was a baby returns, a handsome stranger almost runs her off the road, and she has to help organise her best friend's wedding with the groom's brother whom she has never met. Oh, and it also happens to be Christmas which means she is run off her feet at the lovely teashop where she also works. Add in some misunderstandings, some Christmas magic, and a character who finally understands who she really is and sit back and enjoy the journey.
The setting is stunning in this story and I could picture the teashop and the mouth-watering desserts every time without fail (a piece of advice - get yourself a slice of cake and a cup of tea before you sit down to read this book!). The characters are endearing and very down-to-earth and while the pace is slow, it is never boring or drawn out. While this story can be read as a standalone, why deny yourself the enjoyment of more good books and it will help with some of the backstories in THE LITTLE CHRISTMAS TEASHOP OF SECOND CHANCES.
For a lovely, heartwarming, and truly enjoyable read, look no further than THE LITTLE CHRISTMAS TEASHOP OF SECOND CHANCES by Donna Ashcroft. It is sure to make you smile.
I absolutely adored this book, it was such a lovely story to read and it certainly made me feel all warm and cosy!
I warmed to Lily immediately, she is a superb character, really well developed and I loved her personality and how it developed as the book progressed, and oh my goodness Josh sounded very lovely too!! They made a brilliant pairing as the lead characters for the story.
It is well paced, and has a completely addictive plot and Castle Cove as the setting for the book is perfect. This is my second full length novel so far from the ones released in time for Christmas 2018 and I know now that this is already going to be up there with my favourites for the year!
It is a delightful read and one I would say that can really be read at anytime as it doesn't contain that much Christmas (and I can say that as I read it over the August Bank Holiday)!
Five stars from me, very highly recommended and a complete treat to read!!
I have to admit it was the cover of this book that enticed me. I just love peeking into tea shop windows to spot what goodies they have on offer, especially if the windows are slightly steamed up which indicates lots of people inside chatting and creating a warm, welcoming atmosphere.
I do adore Christmas at the right time of the year ie: December, but in the book world it’s like being in fashion, always working to the wrong season. So even though The Little Christmas Tea-Shop of Second Chances would make one assume it’s going to be overly festive thankfully it’s not. It is however full of life lessons, how we can all learn from each other and sometimes it pays to give someone a second or maybe even third chance so long as you trust them enough not to let you down again. And then have a festive season event to look forward to.
The tea shop is the backdrop, Lily adores working there but finds herself stuck in a rut she has ambitions that she hasn’t yet fulfilled. Best friend Emily comes to the rescue a bit by asking Lily to organise her dream wedding, she eagerly agrees thinking she can show her worth. Emily is stranded elsewhere but Paul hubby to be is there to lend a hand. However the groom’s brother Josh is also roped in to help while also being the eventual wedding photographer.
This is where the story begins to ramp up and become fascinating. I enjoyed trying to figure out who could do what and whether there could possibly be a romance blooming that wasn’t the brides! All the characters were written with believable qualities, I did like Lily I could see a lot of myself in her in younger days.
This is apparently the second book by this author set in the same location which I haven’t read unfortunately. With so many books released with tea shop, coffee shop, cafe, castle, cottage etc in the title it’s sometimes difficult to keep up but after reading this one I will be tempted to go back and find Castle Cafe. While it may have helped fill in some of the background I didn’t really feel at a loss by not reading in order.
This is perfect to curl up by the fire with a mug of hot chocolate, just enough sprinkles of Christmas to get you in the mood if you desire and romance to warm your heart, giggle a little and restore faith in human nature.
Thanks to the author, publisher and netgalley. I read and reviewed voluntarily.
This review was originally posted on Star Crossed Reviews I received this book for free from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.Thank you to Bookouture for my copy of this book via Netgalley and for letting me take part in this tour. Christmas is my absolute favourite time of year and this was a great start to my season of Christmas stories!
In this story we follow Lilly King and Josh Havellin-Scott. Lilly and Josh are thrown together when Emily, Lilly's best friend and Paul, Josh's brother are stranded in Nepal and need the last few elements of their wedding finalised.
Lilly King has spent her life feeling inadequate. She has tried to please everyone by being who they want her to be rather than who she is. I really liked Lilly. She was easy to identify with and had a lot of issues that many women have probably had themselves.
Josh Havellin-Scott is the rebel in his family. His older brother is the doctor his parents would love him to be. Josh's parents think his profession of photographer is beneath their family and that he should get a real job. Josh was fun, cheeky and not to mention pretty easy on the eye.
This is the first book I have read by Donna but I am excited to read Donna's previous books and catch up with the other characters from Castle Cove. I really liked Donna's writing style. It was easy to read, with an engaging story that will have you rooting for these two characters. This was a real feel good romance that will help you find a little self confidence. If you like a romance book with a dash of Christmas then this is the book for you.
The Little Christmas Teashop of Second Chances is the perfect Christmas story. When I started reading it, I knew it was just what I needed, a cozy and lovely Christmas story to lift up my holiday spirit. And it really was. Lily King is a very nice girl, too nice. Josh is the opposite. However, together they might find some middle ground, or at least in the wedding preparations her best friend and his brother had asked them to do for them. Though, there might be something else in the air… I enjoyed the story; it was simple yet complex enough. The characters were interesting, although there were many of them. The story was sweet and I found beautiful quotes that actually made me think. The plot, about Lily’s personality, was interesting and something you can easy feel related to. I have not read the other book by Donna Ashcroft, but that was not a problem at all; I know I definitely want to read it. If you are looking for an easy to read, lovely and cozy story for the holidays, this is definitely a perfect choice. I am sure you will enjoy it as much as I did. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the digital copy.
new 2 Donna's writing and such a great read. i love the cover!! totally pulled me in. i can't be the only one who loves a good cover, right??! such a heart warming Christmas read, 'cause miracles always happen. great characters, love Donna's writing style. do you enjoy a bit of spice ...this one with warm (wink wink) your heart right on up! who is ready to be a taste tester?? i sure am. this read is filled with great visuals and makes ya wanna have some treats. be sure to read it with your fave drink and a couple of treat ...or you might be running to the kitchen or store to grab those treats. i will definitely be reading more from Donna soon enough. such a new fan.
The story itself was good enough, and there's a dog for extra bonus points!
But I didn't especially like either of the two main characters. One is a total pushover who tries to please everyone. While I have no problem with a shy character, I often just thought "Oh just grow a backbone already, will you? Your life is your own and not for others to dictate..." here. The other is a rather rude and always late artist - driving a Porsche... Because every photographer (who won't even do anything for sales) can afford that...?
I enjoyed the side characters a lot more than these two, that's why I can't rate it higher, even though the prose and plot were well enough and I don't regret the time or money spent.
If you do however click with the characters more than me, then this definitely is a nice Christmas romance!
This book was set at Christmas time. It is also written in British dialect. This story was very slow moving and I was almost half through it before it picked up. A great ending though.
A very sweet story. I‘be come back to the character of Lily often in my thoughts of this book. I liked her so much. She was sweet, kind and deserves happiness. A lovely, heart warming, festive read.
4.8 stars ...This short English romance is about Lily and Josh two people who themselves need to appreciate who they are. They recognize it in each other but not individually for themselves.
The Little Christmas Teashop of Second Chances is my second visit to Castle Cove this year and again Donna Ashcroft has written a wonderful book, this time with the theme of second chances and finding happiness at its centre. This book has a gorgeous, colourful cover which draws you in and makes you keen to discover Lily King's story.
Lily works in the Castle teashop but she has a long held ambition to become a chef which would allow her to indulge her passion for food and cooking. Several times a week she also works as a waitress at the Castle Cove restaurant and this is as near to achieving her dream as she has gotten. Lily was a lovable character right from the very beginning, she knew she had flaws and wasn't afraid to admit them. OK maybe she didn't shout them from the rooftops but she knew she needed to fix a few things in her life before she could take the next step forward. But she is kind, good natured and has a heart of gold and would do anything to help a friend or family member in their time of need whenever and whatever that may be.
When it comes to love Lily can't say that she has been that fortunate and contented as she has recently been dumped by Rogan Kelly. 'Lily was unlucky in love and her heart had been broken a few times now- so many that she wondered if it was even worth giving romance another try'. I think romance is always worth a try for if you don't explore and get out there and look for that special someone you really don't know what you could be missing out on. The very person you are meant to spend the rest of your life with could be right there under your nose. For Lily the Castle Tea Shop is a home from home but one can become stuck in a rut and routine and although she loves her job and enjoys meeting lots of different people now is the time she needs to take a risk and follow her dreams. She is in danger of settling on a lonely path and she needs to change this attitude. 'The time had come for new challenges if she was ever going to be happy'. Yes this was a terrifying prospect for Lily to step out of her comfort zone but also the fact she was attempting to adopt this new found attitude and outlook on life was inspiring at the same time.
I think Lily's family history had a profound impact on why she was often so tentative when it came to finding love and happiness. Her family run the local brewery and it was her father and brothers who brought her up when her mother left when she was just a baby. Not having a mother figure in her life didn't damage Lily but yet it did have a significant impact on her. So when a letter arrives out of the blue from her mother Aubrey the cat is set amongst the pigeons. Why is she making contact after so many years of silence and nothing at all? Should Lily take the risks she so often talks about and go and meet Aubrey? Should she tell her father and brothers about this unexpected event? Or would that cause too much heartbreak?
I never liked Aubrey as a character at all. I thought from the moment we met her that she had ulterior motives. Why would she just contact Lily so suddenly unless she wanted something? Aubrey just waltzed back into Lily's life after an absence of so many years and then arrived with preconceived notions, ideas and expectations of how she wanted Lily to change to her own standards and way of thinking. I felt Lily deep down knew that what Aubrey was doing was wrong and therefore she didn't tell anyone about her mother making contact. Yes Lily wanted to make changes in her life and find her confidence again but I don't think establishing a relationship with Aubrey was the way to go. I wouldn't normally say that when it comes to a mother/daughter relationship in books but here it felt there was more bad than good and ulterior motives were behind everything rather than genuine love and affection.
Reconnecting with Aubrey was just one strand to the story and I thought the author gave us just the right amount of this balanced nicely alongside the challenge Lily has to arrange her best friends wedding. Aubrey presented the more serious side to the story whereas planning Emily's wedding, as she was away and wouldn't arrive back until her wedding at Christmas, gave us plenty of fun, humour and laugh out loud moments. Lily thought this would be plain sailing, not so when Emily's soon to be brother in law-Josh-is tasked with helping Lily with the arrangements. Josh is a photographer recently moved from London and working on his next exhibition. He was a brooding character who I felt at times just wanted to be left alone to get on with his passion but he has his own family pressures as his mother is constantly at him to become a doctor. Lily instantly feels something for Josh but she can't measure or quantify what it is. She needs time to sit back and assess things.
Whereas I thought - Lily you wanted to grab new opportunities and go for them so why are you being so tentative around Josh? It was like they circled each other and sparred off each other when it came to selecting things for the wedding. At times they very much rubbed each other up the wrong way but this was more like a smoke screen or a resistance to how they were perhaps feeling deep down. Lily always has a smart answer or rebuke for Josh and I loved seeing this develop between the pair and go back and forth. 'Perhaps it was a defence mechanism because she liked him more than she should and while she found him attractive, his irresponsible, rebellious attitude to life proved he wasn't the man for her'. I get Lily wanted someone in her life that she could rely on but really she wasted so much time and energy keeping everything locked inside and not just going for it and seeing where the wind would take her. She's not truly honest with herself or anyone else.
I think Josh saw this aspect to her character and he wanted to break it down. He was a man who did what he wanted regardless and maybe Lily should adopt that stance with regard to life as well. I loved Josh and deep down I knew he was in pain because he couldn't fully commit to what he wanted to do due to external pressures. I thought himself and Lily were so compatible and their romance was ripe for development, the question remained who would be prepared to make the first move? I thought the scenes where Lily and Josh have to come together to organise things for the wedding provided alot of light relief and laugh out loud moments going from test driving suitable wedding cars, to trying on the brides dress to tasting food for the reception, the pair were covering all angles and in doing so I fervently hoped it would bring the pair closer together.
Really reflecting on everything Lily and Josh were as bad as each other not wanting to make the leap. Even though they both had feelings for each other Josh was afraid of failure and of getting hurt. I think we all feel that way but unless you try you'll never know and you'll never realise what joy you could be missing out on. 'That was why he didn't let people close - the reason relationships of any kind were a bad idea. He didn't live up to expectations, he hurt people without meaning to and he'd do well to remember it. Which was yet another reason why he was determined to keep his distance from Lily'. Yet with the wedding preparations forcing them to come together maybe this solemn and defeatist attitude from Josh might very well change. I for one really hoped it would.
Lily needs to find out who she truly is. Can Josh help her do this? Can they have the perfect wedding ready for Emily and Paul as Christmas approaches? Will Lily fulfil her dream and become a chef and as an aside will herself and Josh push things to one side and take the plunge? All these questions arced through my mind as I flew through the final satisfying chapters in what proved to be a delightful read and a welcome return to the characters and setting of Castle Cove. It's a lovely read for this time of year- entertaining, uplifting, cosy and with plenty of drama and romance thrown in as Lily and Josh learn some truthful, honest and intense life lessons. Donna's new book will be with us in March, The Little Guesthouse of New Beginnings has a stunning cover and it's certainly on my radar as a book to look forward to in 2019.
This is my first time reading a book by this author, and it didn’t dissapoint, but I didn’t love the story either. I guess it’s partly because I expected a little more (oh well, a lot and over the top) christmas spirit with a book with the word christmas in the title. But that’s on me. The story is set in the weeks leading up to christmas, and there are decorations.
I liked the character development of both hero and heroine, and how their personal and professional lives nicely contributed to that. The analogy with cooking and letting go was spot on, as was the resolution with the omelets. The exposition worked at the same level for the hero. A job well done!
The writing style dragged a bit at times. To me it felt the author tried to hard to start each scene at the beginning, sometimes including stretches of forgettable dialogue. My advice: dare to jump with each new chapter, surprising the reader and challenging them to follow along untill the backstory leading up to the start of the scene is explained. (Example: the Porsche driving scene near the end)
The rest of the cast felt a bit bland, even the villain was one-dimensional: all bad and selfish. That part could have been developed better, maybe providing some surprising twists in the story.
All in all a nice (albeit a little predictable) cosy small town romance that feels as if the christmas part was added during the last edits, maybe to match the title.
I bought this because it was so highly rated, but because it was book #2, I also bought book #1 so I could read it first. Book one was pretty feeble but I struggled through. Needless to say having read it my expectations for the second book were not great and soon proved well founded. I only managed the first 50 pages, there seemed little purpose in trying to reach my usual “100 page decision point” so I gave up. As soon as I returned to one of my preferred authors I was reminded just how poor this book was. I am not averse to a lightweight read but this is too limp for me. I doubt I will buy any more from this author.
