Enid Mary Blyton (1897–1968) was an English author of children's books.

Born in South London, Blyton was the eldest of three children, and showed an early interest in music and reading. She was educated at St. Christopher's School, Beckenham, and - having decided not to pursue her music - at Ipswich High School, where she trained as a kindergarten teacher. She taught for five years before her 1924 marriage to editor Hugh Pollock, with whom she had two daughters. This marriage ended in divorce, and Blyton remarried in 1943, to surgeon Kenneth Fraser Darrell Waters. She died in 1968, one year after her second husband.

Blyton was a prolific author of children's books, who penned an estimated 800 books over about 40 years. Her stories were often either children's adventure and mystery stories, or fantasies involving magic. Notable series include: The Famous Five, The Secret Seven, The Five Find-Outers, Noddy, The Wishing Chair, Mallory Towers, and St. Clare's.

According to the Index Translationum, Blyton was the fifth most popular author in the world in 2007, coming after Lenin but ahead of Shakespeare.

Although I rated this one long ago it turns out that I was mistaken in thinking I had read it. Recently I listened to the audiobook with my daughter.

It's in this book that the trusty fisherboy, who appears now and then in the first five books, mysterious changes his name from Alf to James. I like to think Blyton was playing the long game and had the series endured past book 23 this would have been resolved amid the unravelling of some dastardly plot.

This volume is one of the weaker ones in the series. It centres on Uncle Quentin's ill-specified scientific endeavors. In book 2 he was writing formula and brewing things in test tubes. Men working for an unspecified "foreign country" worked to infiltrate his household and steal his papers. In book 4 he seemed to be some sort of civil engineer collaborating on a project to drain a marsh and getting kidnapped by an irate smuggler. In book 6 the ubiquitous uncle is working solo on a government funded project that should "eliminate the need for coal, oil, and gas". Uncle Quentin appears to be about to solve the problem of nuclear fusion single handedly!

The science involves a tall tower made of plastic with wires poking out of the walls and a glass room at the top. We later learn that the experiment has the power to cause an explosion that would completely destroy the whole island. This is not, however, the reason Quentin has recused himself to the island (much to George's disgust). No, health and safety were never mentioned. Eschewing this simple and reasonable reason why Quentin might need to be on an uninhabited island Bylton wanders out on the slender limb of her scientific knowledge and declares that his work needs to be conducted beneath water and with water on all sides. We never find out why.

Of course bad men want to steal his idea. This time for profit rather than "the enemy". Quentin gets spooked that there maybe someone on the island even though reality has shifted and made it utterly impossible for anyone other than George and the local fishermen to navigate the rocks and land on the island.

Timmy has to stay to guard Quentin while back on shore the children monitor his lantern and mirror signals to confirm he is ok.

George "just like a girl" gives away too much information to a shady type who shows an interest. He also provides the mandatory "extra child" in the form of his son.

It turns out that the baddies have parachuted onto the island to overcome the impassable rocks. For the rest of the series the rocks are eminently passable and fossil fuels are still used despite Uncle Quentin's discoveries...

It's a Famous Five book so of course there have to be caves. Not only caves but a nonsensical series of natural dry tunnels running from the island under the sea and surfacing on the mainland. Think about that one for a bit ... try to imagine how they formed and how they don't fill with water.

Pistols are drawn once more and a shot is fired! Don't worry, **SPOILER** Timmy survives.

Anyway, the baddies are caught, the son turns out not to be related by blood and gets a chance at a new life where he can use his artistic talent, and all's well that ends well.

What kind of scientist will Uncle Quentin be next? Stay tuned!

This instalment in the Famous Five series seemed a little dull to me in comparison to the last two books, which were both pretty high on the excitement scale.

Perhaps it was the fact that they were back on Kirrin Island for the third time... or perhaps it was because not a lot really happened until the third act, when things did start to pick up.

Don't get me wrong; I still enjoyed the book... just nowhere near as much as the previous two.

P.S. - I'm not completely mad; I do realise I'm not the target audience for this book. ;-)

I haven't lost my marbles or anything but this is a series I grew up with and loved. I spent a lot of time on my own when young and books were my great comfort. Some time ago I decided to read these again. I still enjoy them after all these years. Yes parts of them are not quite pc for today's world but that aside I think they hold up well.

Any book that simultaneously advocates developing an alternative fuel source (circa-1950) and suggests the necessary ingredients in the underground rescue of a 13 year old are shovels and brandy is ok in my opinion.

Uncle Quentin you really are the most infuriating and grumpy old fart. You angry up my blood to Hulk proportions!

Anne although the others think you're a pointless, incompetent turd, I think you're brave and kind with just a hint of Snow White twee for good measure.

Timmy, clever boy you appear to have learnt how to understand the entire English language so stop faking it and say something other than woof!

Aunt Fanny, if Uncle Quentin can't remember to eat when he's hungry I say tough! Just make yourself a nice cuppa and sit in the larder eating all those spare cakes that seem to be hanging around in there all the time!

George stop being a grumpus!

Dick, don't let Julian take charge all of the time.

Julian, stop patronising Anne, she'll turn one of these days. You have been warned!

However... If you all change too much it won't be very Enid Blyton which means it won't be very Famous Five so...as you were! Where to next gang?

Truly great, fast paced children’s adventure books. The entire series has expertly crafted plot lines with many red herring and unexpected twists and turns, demonstrating the best of the mystery/adventure genre. With challenging language, realistic imagery and stunning illustrations the famous five are a treat for imagination to let children explore. Perfect for the book lovers and children looking for escapism to a foreign world where different rules apply. Would very much recommend all these books and any other of Enid Blyton’s work.

Eep, it was awesome!!!
And reading at midnight is sooo fun heheh
Also criminals can be soo mean, also George I still don't get how easily George gave Timmy to her dad, now, if it were me, I would have thrown a HUGE tantrum for giving the island, and even more and asked for soo many things if someone were to take my dog, and told them I'd be visiting more than 2 times a week.
Anyways, Enid Blyton will always be the best author ever.

'Mogen we gaan zwemmen? Tante Fanny, het is heus warm genoeg! Oh, zeg alstublieft dat we mogen!
Natuurlijk niet! Zwemmen in april - wie heeft ooit zoiets gehoord!'

I’m reading these to my kids at bed time.

The Famous Five and Secret Seven remind me of summer holidays at my grandmas; I loved these books.

Luckily they’re not old enough (or immature) to laugh at Enid’s brilliantly named characters. Sadly, I am.

This isn’t my favourite book in the series, it’s main focus is on strange Uncle Quentin on Kirrin Island.

I do laugh when reading these adventures, as I can’t imagine us parents letting the kids go exploring alone, but they’re always fun to re-read, though!

Definitely the best of the series to date! Uncle Quentin is in the final stages of developing an energy source that will make oil, coke and coal (and any associated mining) obsolete, and which won’t be available to private companies to exploit; plotting and characterisation are tight (and believable) and the whole novel ascends a notch or three above previous adventures.

A heartwarming and highly enjoyable sick-bed read.

It is genuinely a fascinating story among well known five series with part of anticipation and secret associated with it. The individuals who have not perused five in treasure Island will be befuddled as this story is pretty much the continuation of that one.
The four children and Timmy was making ponders all through. The appearance of two characters Martin and his guardian additionally stimulated interest in me as I was anxiously brushing through the pages to know the peak. The peak was absolutely surprising.
Just part which sounds tad exhausting was uncle Quintines experiments as science was mixed with fiction which will evoke lack of interest for the people who love suspense thrillers...

8,7/10

beberapa waktu terakhir jujur aja aku sedikit takut saat Lima Sekawan serasa udah ga seru lagi. kupikir jangan" umur tuh pengaruh ke buku yg dibaca, karna umurku yg udah semakin tua pasti ada perubahan ke selera baca. sedikit takut nganggep mereka berlima cuma sebagai kenangan. ternyata emg salah baca buku aja 🤣

dari 2023 aku baca :
Dalam Lorong Pencoleng ceritanya garing bgt, rateku cuma 2/5
Minggat sebenernya bosenin meski dapet 3,5/5
Rahasia Harta Karun dapet 5/5 tp jujur aja lupa ceritanya 😭🤲🏻

The book runs along the familiar lines of the rest of the Famous Five series.
The Five meet someone they do not fully thrust, at least not all of them so they quarrel about that. Uncle Quentin is his own peculiar self and his wife must form a dam of peace between him and the children. Some people play they minor but reliable part: James as a devoted trustee of George, Joanne who provides them with enough food to feed an army.
And there are differences that make this book stand out from the rest and worthwile reading. Like the soup that Aunt Fanny provided for Quentin, Quentin who takes residence on Kirrin Island and the children that must stay at Kirrin Cottage for instance.
As usual some secret passages are discovered, this time a very spectacular one.
The childres are all very polite and obedient to their elders - it stays old-fashioned but can be read with a nostalgic chuckle, it does not disturb or drives attention away from the actual storyline.
Only #6n in a series that has many more books to come. Great!

REALLY DIDN'T KNOW HOW I'D GO WITH GOING "BACK" TO KIRRIN ISLAND "AGAIN", BUT TRULY ENJOYED THE READ!

PREMISE: Uncle Quentin is busy working on Kirrin Island - and it's all top secret! He doesn't want anyone to visit. Not even the Famous Five. But the island is full of hiding places and Uncle Quentin is not alone. Someone wants to steal his ideas and ruin his plans. George is determined to find her father and save her island, no matter what dangers await. She can't do it without the others - can they help her in time?

THOUGHTS: Really enjoyed this one. No harm comitted which was a great improvement. Was good to see Enid Blyton take us back to Kirrin Island but in a really different way! Still love all 5 of them very much and am looking forward to the next book in the series.

5 Stars!

We're really enjoying this series. We try to read a chapter or two each night with our 7 year old but my husband and son were getting so excited to hear how this one ended that I had to read 5 chapters tonight taking us to the end because they couldn't cope being left on a cliffhanger.

I can't believe i didn't read any of these as a kid but I'm making up for it now and thoroughly enjoying it. We've read a lot of Enid Blyton but these are by far the best.

No 6 of 21 reliving my childhood.

She certainly knew she was on a winning formula with tunnels, scientists, threats to the world and ginger beer and cakes!

This was quite good with Timmy and George being the heroes this time while poor Anne had to sort clothes and prepare meals. So many secret tunnels which all seem to have been built perfectly at some time. If you can get over things you know that just are factual, you can still enjoy these books.
