A careless whisper. A shattered trust. Will Darcy choose love. . .or vengeance?Elizabeth's secret hopes for an offer from Mr. Darcy are shattered when gossip spreads like wildfire through Meryton, branding Miss Georgiana a compromised woman at the hands of George Wickham. There is only one person entrusted by Darcy with his sister's secret—Elizabeth Bennett.
Lizzy's fierce pride forbids she continue to plead her innocence. She would never betray Georgiana, but if Darcy does not know her better than that by now, then he never will.Bruised pride and a broken heart must be set aside when a threat to Georgiana spurs Elizabeth into action. Placing herself in harms way, she is faced with utter, foul ruin. . .unless Darcy can reach her in time and rescue her from the blackguards set to sell her virtue, and possibly her life.
Indebted is a sensual Pride and Prejudice novella variation for readers who crave intimate scenes between Darcy and Elizabeth, but also adore a dash of action and intrigue. Second in the Darcy, A Little Dark series, standalones featuring Mr. Darcy just a little spicier than originally written.
It was a good story and a thrilling plot, with intimate interludes in between laugh out loud moments.
I have a penchant for a badass Darcy and this story certainly delivered in that aspect. I thought he was fabulously portrayed but so was Elizabeth. Strong and independent with a discerning mind.
I would rate it high angst but the plot took a twist that I struggle to stomach... (It was not drawn out nor was it rubbing too much salt in the wound though).
Georgiana visited her brother at Netherfield. Unfortunately, rumours about her ruin were spread through the Meryton society and Elizabeth was the only person who knew. Darcy naturally drew the conclusion that Elizabeth had been telling the tale, creating adversity between ODC.
Circumstances, I have no inclination to reveal, landed Elizabeth in the hands of a sinister group of men that profited on selling women at auctions...
Good storyline - Darcy and Elizabeth develop feelings for each other early. He's established a pattern of finding her on her morning walks in Hertfordshire, joining Bingley on social visits to Longbourn, and conversing with her at neighborhood social events.
Georgiana is also at Netherfield, and she has formed strong friendships with Elizabeth and Jane with her brother's approval and encouragement. As a result, she shares with them the story of her heartache at Mr. Wickham's hands.
Unfortunately, the story somehow finds its way to the gossip network surrounding Netherfield, and Georgiana becomes known as a fallen woman. Darcy is incensed, assumes Elizabeth betrayed Georgiana's confidence and refuses to acknowledge her from that point. Georgiana is made of tougher stuff in this imagining, and she remains convinced of her friend's innocence, maintains their friendship, and refuses to hide from the local society.
The author's writing is engaging. It flows with just the right mixture of narration, dialogue, and introspection and offers a gradual build-up of tension leading to a satisfying turning point and resolution. Considering that the climactic scene occurs in a brothel and the book's title indicates it's a "sensual intimate variation," it's not a surprise that the content gets into Mature Adult territory - and I have to say that it's very well written MA content.
Several things about the plot give me pause. The first is that Darcy fixates on blaming Elizabeth when he knows Georgiana told both her AND Jane. He never considers it could be Elizabeth's sister who passed along Georgiana's secret. While it's made clear that neither of the Bennet sister are responsible, the story never does identify the source, which bugged me.
Then I couldn't understand why Darcy would allow Georgiana to continue to see them, considering how certain he is that Elizabeth is guilty, regardless of how much his sister digs her heels in. Or that he'd go to London and leave Georgiana at Netherfield when George Wickham is in the neighborhood.
There are a couple of scenes at Netherfield where the Bingley sisters are curiously absent. I found it hard to believe that Caroline would let her quarry and his sister out of her sight so easily, especially with Elizabeth and Jane there.
It's a wonderful plot and the writing is stellar, but a bunch of little things add up to make it a wee less credible.
Indebted: A Pride and Prejudice Sensual Intimate Variation (Darcy, A Little Dark Book 2)
Liked that Georgiana was at Netherfield with Darcy and becomes friends with Elizabeth. She and Darcy have feelings for one another, but his pride and duty keeps him from fully committing himself. Elizabeth knows about Georgiana's secret about Wickham, and when rumors surface after the Netherfield Ball, Darcy blames Elizabeth. When Wickham tries to kidnap Georgiana to sell her to settle his debts, Elizabeth is taken instead when she rescues Georgiana. Darcy infiltrates the exclusive gentlemen's club, and buys Elizabeth. Rules of the club means he must "take" her before they can leave the premises. As the bans are read in Meryton, Darcy spends his time in London with the destruction of the sordid gentlemen's club. After marrying, they leave for Pemberley no one knowing what horror Elizabeth went through. Hopefully, the slimy snake Wickham was dealt with too.
This is the second book in the Darcy, A Little Dark series and is the first book by this Author that I have read. A well-written story that I enjoyed reading I am now going to be looking to read the first book in this series. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Jane Austin must be turning over in her grave. What a steamy, almost x rated book. I doubt this is what Jane had in mind for her characters, but oh my Darcy!
