Fire in one hand, ashes in the other

Studious tutor Emmy McKay fell in love with Cash Kingston over a biology textbook, never expecting the high school football hero to give her a second thought. But his feelings for her burned just as hot. All too soon, Emmy’s choices destroyed their youthful relationship, reducing it to a pile of ash. Years later, she has landed her dream job as an ER doctor in her hometown. Now it’s time to win back her dream man.

As a firefighter and tactical medic, Cash Kingston is no stranger to white-knuckle situations. But when he learns his beautiful—and brilliant—ex-girlfriend has returned to Steele Ridge, he feels as if he’s standing on the roof of a blazing building. With no escape route in sight. Emmy is the only woman who’s ever had the power to build him up one minute and burn him down the next.

But when someone targets Emmy and they begin to suspect the danger stems from their past relationship, it’s impossible for Cash to stay detached. Will the struggle to untangle a web of half-truths bring them closer together, or will it tear them apart for good?

Cash Kingston and Emerson (Emmy) McKay were high school sweethearts. She was the smart, ambitious, nerd. He was the quarterback who needed tutoring to get a college scholarship. When Cash proposed in front of the whole town, she turned him down because she didn’t feel he was ambitious enough. She leaves town after graduation, only coming home occasionally to visit with her mom and cousin.

It is 13 years later, and Emmy is an Emergency Room doctor in an elite Boston hospital, living with the chief of staff. When he proposes, unceremoniously, in front of the staff, she realizes just how unhappy she is with her life. She turns him down and returns home to figure things out.

Cash is now a paramedic with the firehouse. He’s worked hard to get where he’s at. He’s currently hoping to be the team lead for the newly developed Tactical Medical Team being formed to assist SWAT. When he learns Emmy is back in town, and she’s been given his position, he isn’t very happy, and a little confused. Since Emmy left, he’s dated casually but no real relationships.

While Cash and Emmy are trying to figure out where they fit into each other’s lives, someone starts targeting Emmy. There are a couple of possible suspects thrown out, some negativity from a few people, but I was caught off guard by who was actually behind all the violence towards Emmy. The final suspense scenes were a bit disturbing to me.

The Kingston/Steele families are a close knit family. Their interactions are realistic and underline the tight connections they have.

I felt the suspense overrode the romance, but still a good read that held my attention all the way through. I look forward to the next book.

In Tasting Fire, Ms. Browning takes the reader on a journey touched by love, trauma, suspense and twists and turns so unexpected they take you off the edge of your seat and dump you right on the floor!
I have read Kelsey Browning's romances and romantic comedies before, but Tasting Fire is a romantic suspense. It's just as good as everything else she has written. She has included some things that are current to society today and soooo troublesome! Emmy and Cash, who were a high school couple years before, are caught up in the horrific happening Emmy has returned to Steele Ridge at least partially because of him. Events and circumstances may bring them back together or they might drive the wedge further between them.

Tasting Fire by Kelsey Browning
Steele Ridge: The Kingstons #2

When given a second chance at forever-love with a man you turned down thirteen years ago and you really want that opportunity it just might be worth leaving the big city for your small hometown Steele Ridge in North Carolina. That is just what Dr. Emmy McKay decided to do one day after events pushed her a bit in that direction. When she arrives in town as the new head of the Tactical Medical Team working with the regional SWAT team it is a bit of a shock to the team and to Cash Kingston…the man she never really got over.

Cash has never really had more than fleeting relationships with women and is a charmer with a ready smile on his face but he is a lot deeper than many, especially Emmy, might think. As the two become reacquainted they learn that the supposed ashes of their youthful love may hide embers that only need to be fanned a bit to burst to life again.

As Emmy settles into her job at the ER and as team leader of the TMT bad things begin to happen. One thing followed by another has Emmy and Cash thinking about who might be behind the sudden happenings and both want to get to the bottom of the situation. In addition to the mystery threatening more than one the two take time to be together.

This is a story that is deep and thought provoking. It is a second chance romance but it also deals with current situations heard about in the news and they are handled with skill and heart without losing the essence of the underlying love story.

It took me a bit of time to warm to Emmy…I mean…how COULD she leave Cash behind to pursue her professional goals…and yet…how could she give up those goals? And, why was Cash so eager to fall back into Emmy’s arms after so much heartbreak on his part? Well, perhaps their young love was true love and always meant to be.

I loved Cash’s family and found them, the Steeles, Emmy’s cousin and mother all to be wonderful people. I would love to know more about the rest of the Kinsgston siblings and look forward to finding out what will happen next in Steele Ridge.

Did I like this book? Definitely!
Will I read more in this series? Without a doubt
Do you need to read previous books in the series? Not really

Thank you to the author for the ARC – This is my honest review.

I loved this book! The main characters are so well written. Emerson McKay is such a strong female lead. I enjoyed how smart and spunky she is. She is tough but also vulnerable, she is a no-nonsense woman that longs to figure out what having fun is all about.
She has worked hard to earn her position as the lead emergency room doctor at Baltimore General. But one break up later she finds herself out of a job and moving back to her hometown Steele Ridge.
Cash Kingston is a medic with Steele Ridges local fire department. He is strong and caring works hard and loves his family. He is selfless and willing to lay his life down for others. He also used to be in love with Emerson McKay and when he hears that she is engaged and moving back to Steele Ridge he is not happy. When he discovers that Emmy will be part of his Tactical Medical Team he is not happy at all.
When bad things start happening Emmy, Cash steps up and tries to find the person behind the attacks. Things really become serious when an innocent teenager is killed.
Cash and Emmy work together to try to find the person behind the attacks starting with Emmy's ex-fiancee.
This is such a sweet love story with just enough action and heat to keep you turning the pages and trying to guess who the villain is. Honestly, I was shocked not only to find out who it was but also how violent that person truly was.
If you enjoy and good action-packed mystery with a love story and some pretty hot scenes added in, then Tasting Fire is the perfect fit for you.

Tasting Fire is the second book in the Steele Ridge: The Kingstons series. Much like the original Steele Ridge series, Kelsey Browning, Tracey Devlyn, or Adrienne Giordano will write the books in the newest series. Kelsey Browning wrote Tasting Fire. I usually read books in a series in order, but I've jumped around a bit with both the original series and this newest one. While I really believe you can read each book as a stand-alone story, I totally plan to go back and read each of the books I missed so far.

I absolutely adore a reunion romance and add in a bit of suspense and I'm in my happy place. Kelsey Browning did an amazing job with Tasting Fire. Not only did I love both Cash Kingston and Emmy McKay from the moment they each appeared on the page, I could tell even after all the years they had been apart, they still loved each other, even if they weren't willing to admit it in the beginning. I love that both Emmy and Cash are extremely strong individuals. I loved seeing them get to reconnect so quickly thanks to Emmy being the new leader of the tactical team along with being an ER doctor in the local hospital. As Cash thought he was a shoe-in for the position of leader for the team, he is doubly shocked not to get the position, but to discover Emmy is back and the position is hers.

I loved while there was major tension between Emmy and Cash when they first saw each other again, they quickly found a way not only to put the past behind them and work together, but build to so much more. I have to say the mystery of who was targeting Emmy totally threw me. I was so sure it was one individual and was completely blown away to find out who was behind everything. I love when an author can keep me guessing in a romantic suspense book, and Kelsey Browning did an amazing job in Tasting Fire. Add in all the super sexy and amazing chemistry between Emmy and Cash, and Tasting Fire was a winner in my book.

4 1/2 STARS!

First love reunited! With the next books in the Steele Ridge: The Kingstons series, Kelsey Browning brings us Cash's story! We all know and love Sheriff Maggie who's been with us for the entire series, and Cash is her sexy firefighter brother. He had his heart broken by his first love and never quite recovered, and now here she comes barreling back into town. The characters had my attention quickly, the backstory was intriguing and the mystery and danger that soon pops into the story was a really great addition. Really enjoyed Cash and Emmy!

Emerson McKay met Cash Kingston as a tutoring assignment in high school, but a fast friendship and spark of first love was quick to follow their introduction. They were soon inseparable and everyone thought they were in it for the long haul ... including Cash. Emmy's ambition and career dreams led her to break his heart and go on to make a life for herself. Now she's back .. and she wants the guy she left behind!

Cash loves his job as a firefighter and tactical medic, so when the promotion he's been vying for is snatched up by returning Emmy, he's spitting nails. First she dumps him and leaves him hanging his head in embarrassment, and now she takes the job that was supposed to be his? What more does this woman want from him?? When upset and danger seems to follow soon after she arrives in town, Cash sits up and takes notice.

Tasting Fire blends two of my favorite things - second chance romance and suspense - and it does it with quite the tale woven in between.

It's been years since Emmy has been home and in that time a lot has changed - but also some things never change - such as her love for Cash. Emmy made a mistake years ago - knowing the life she wanted and the plans she had she broke Cash's heart and left but now she's back and she's determined to make everything about her return work out.

Cash is still just as in love with Emmy as he was when she hurt and left him years ago, but he's found a good thing in life, happy in his career choices. So when Emmy turns up back in town unexpectedly he's a little put out and yet he can't quell those feelings of long ago especially not when danger is lurking.

Tasting Fire will suck you in as you move to figure out who is out for Emmy and why, how is it all connected and what will it mean for the love that is still between these two. The chemistry and connection between Cash and Emmy is powerful, even as there is still a lot of pain and regret lingering between them too. There's just enough drama and suspense to keep you guessing but it's balanced out by the rest of the story. Browning has taken current events and used them within the story developing a plot that is easy to connect with and follow while also giving life to these characters and their past, present and future.

The surprise ending of this one is great. I never had a clue and I loved that!

Emmy was a small town girl with big time dreams. But to achieve those dreams she has to break the heart of her high school boyfriend and fist love, Cash Kingston. With no ambition beyond staying in their hi hometown she has to say no. Little does she know that seta off a chain of events that will change them forever.

Years later Emmy is a Dr and well known ad loved with her colleagues. But when her eyes are opened to what Oliver, her boss and lover wants, she finally understands what she wants. And with her sudden unemployment, her dream job opens up in her hometown.

Seeing Cash once again, Emmy realizes she never stopped loving him. And Cash knows all too well what his feelings are for her. Taking the job that should have been his should make him bitter but it only makes him want to work harder. Then things start happening. Bd things that are focused towards Emmy and all things stop for Cash. His only concern is for the woman he loves and noone is going to hurt her.

But as their renewed passions increase s does the danger to Emmy's life and career. Is Oliver behind it all? Could she really have been so blind to what he was capable of? Or is it someone else, someone who wanted Cash for their own?

Talk about a whirlwind book! I love second chance romance and romantic suspense. When its all wrapped up in one? Perfection! Cash and Emmy are sizzling! When they were seniors in high school Cash knew what he wanted formthe rest of his life, Emmy. Emmy was single minded in ambition for a career. She felt driven to succeed and didn't want anything to deter her from it. Her goal was to save and protect everyone. Cash was devistaed and embaressed.
Once Emmy establishes her career she's missing something, fun. She has a fantastic opportunity to come home and that means she must make amends to Cash. She is met with resistance from the team she's supposed to be leading until Cash gets on board. There are some other things happening that threaten her and try to run her out of town. Cash becomes protective and they discover they still have deep feelings for each other. Can they make it work this time? And who is behind all the threats? Her ex? Her staff? Or are the threats coming from somewhere neither of them ever suspected?
This book was heart wrenching, exciting, and was one I didn't want to put down.

Tasting Fire

WOW! This story was on fire! This story is about Cash and Emmy. The beginning was a little sad because Cash had to face the one gal who broke his heart in high school and walked away from her hometown. Now, quite a few years later, Emmy returns, after she fired from her job in Baltimore because she refused to marry the Chief of Staff. When she accepts a position that Cash wanted, he resents her for a while but then realized he still loved Emmy. Then things start going downhill from there. Someone didn't want Emmy back in Steele Ridge and was doing all kinds of bad to get rid of her. Cash was trying to protect her but he was getting frustrated when she keeps getting hurt. Towards the end, I was shocked to find out who wanted Emmy gone. Once that threat was eliminated, Emmy decided to propose to Cash and once he accepted, the story kind of ends. 😔 Still a FANTASTIC job Kelsey! I would recommend this book.

This is the second book in The Kingstons series of Steele Ridge. While it is not necessary to read the Steeles, it does help to know the characters and the roles they played in their respective books.

Cash has played it footloose and fancy free for the past ten years. His heart was set on a girl - until she turned down his marriage proposal in front of the whole town.

Emmy is back in Steele Ridge to work as an emergency doctor and set up the tactical medical team that will assist with the SWAT calls.

She's not back to rekindle a long ago romance. However, when things happen around her, she knows she can count on Cash. The only man who has her heart.

I will say I did not see the who the stalker was. That - and the reason behind it - really threw me. Ms. Browning did a fantastic job of holding me in suspense till the end. I loved it!

Tasting Fire has everything I could possibly want in a book! A wonderful second-chance-at-love couple with Cash and Emmy, check! A close-knit family who supports not only its members but their entire small town, check. A squad of firefighters/paramedics/SWAT team members...yes! And that doesn’t even include a creepy ex, the suspense of a possible hidden threat and a splash of current events.
While Tasting Fire is book two in the Kingston series, which is a continuation of the Steele Ridge multi-author set, it is a stand-alone story. I didn’t feel I missed out on anything by not reading book one, but I’ll be going back to it, since I loved this one so much. With plenty of drama, romance, fun dialogue and great secondary characters, Kelsey Browning has written a fantastic 5 star read!

This book was so full - emotions, actions, suspense, mystery, action, growth and of course heated romance!

Can you ever truly go home again? Emmy, a successful doctor, returns to her hometown after 13 years. Cash Kingston has loved Emmy all of his life, despite her turning down his public proposal. When it comes time to announce the leader of the Tactical Medical Team, Cash just knows the position is his, until Emmy's name is announced and he lays her eyes on for the first time in 13 years.

What starts as a tension filled professional relationship slowly builds into a friendship. When it seems like Emmy is being targeted, can Cash remain professional and protect Emmy or will he lose the one and only woman he's ever loved all over again?

This book sucked me right in. I loved it was a second chance romance. Getting to know Emmy and Cash I want them to get their HEA. It's not going to be easy because someone isn't happy Emmy is back in town. The characters are great. I loved Cash's family. I love all their different personalities. I will say Emmy's ex is a real piece of work. What a number one jerk! I strongly disliked him. This book had the heart and feels along with the heat and the suspense. The suspenseful parts of this book had me on the edge of me seat. It also had me flipping the pages to see what was going to happen next. To me this book was well rounded and gave me what i crave in a book.

I loved this book by Kelsey its the first book I've read by this author and it won't be the last. Kelsey's story line is awesome, about a young love that burns hot until Emmy leaves the town to follow her dreams, leaving Cash to carry on without her. Cash becomes a firefighter medic in his town but he never really got over Emmy. When Emmy returns to the town as an E. R doctor they realise their fire still burns brightly. But when Emmy becomes a target things change dramatically, can Cash keep Emmy safe and find the culprit before it's to late?

Tasting Fire (Steele Ridge: The Kingstons Book 2)
Kelsey Browning

A great second chance book that works through issues that Emmy and Cash need to solve if they are going to have a HEA. Bring in a aggressive former boy friend, threatening incidents that are aimed at Emmy that accelerate to attempted murder. Who in Steele Ridge could possibly be doing it? It is a nonstop read from start to finish as Kelsey weaves a tale of suspense layered with loyalty, friendship, and love. Many twists and turns draws you to try and figure out who is the villain. Have to admit that I did not figure it out.

Hands down one of my favorites so far!!!!!!
Cash and Emmy were small town high school sweet hearts. Emmy wanted more out of life, leaving the small town and a broken hearted Cash behind. Now Emmy is back! Emmy takes over the tactical team that Cash wanted. As they work out their differences and back into each other’s hearts they have some serious obstacles to overcome!! Someone has it out for Emmy!!! This book has it all! Love, drama, twists and turns, a little mystery and a whole bunch of fire!!!!! I was fortunate to receive an ARC for this book! Kelsey Browning is an amazing writer!!! Gripping all the way from beginning to end.
I loved this book. It was very different from what I have been enjoying lately and a palate cleanser.
Yes, romance is the base of the story, friends to loves, lovers reunited trope, but for me, it was the suspense and dramatic climax which kept me on edge and turning page after page.
The flow of the story was the perfect mix of romance and suspense.
I enjoy the Kingston family and their infamous cousins, who add depth to the story.
Family, love and suspense, I couldn't have asked for more.

I loved Cash and Emmy and how their second chance had real life elements to it. It made them relatable and endearing. I also loved the way the author wrote about some of todays social issues in such a thought provoking way. It was perfect! Highly, highly recommended!!

Another great addition to the Steel Ridge series

Another delightful visit to Steele Ridge, this time featuring Cash and Emmy. High school sweethearts who grow apart and many years later find themselves working together professionally. Watching them reevaluate their personal and professional choices, throw in an unexpected villain and visiting again with previous terrific characters makes Tasting Fire a very enjoyable read. I can’t wait for the next book in the series.

Wow!

This one took an unexpected turn at the end but wow! Very good second chance at love story. 4.5 Stars.
Cash did one of those crazy big things like propose to her in front of the whole town when he & Emmy were seniors in high school and she wasn’t ready. They’re all grown up now and need to work through their issues while someone is out to get Emmy. Seriously tho, I can honestly say that it was not predictable at all! Just Wow!

Romance and suspense with great characters. Cash and Emmy were strong willed characters who could realize they had made mistakes and had flaws. Great story although I didn’t realize this is a series and I started with book 2. I will be looking forward to reading the rest of them.
