"There is no one coming to save us, no one who can be entrusted with our defense. There is only us—and we will have to be enough."
New Year's Eve, 2000. The end of an old year, the dawn of a new. But man never changes. . .
And in the Middle East, the frail peace of the new millennium's earliest months has now been shattered by the savagery of a growing intifada, violence which first gripped the world with the brutal lynching of Israeli reservists in the West Bank city of Ramallah now spilling into the streets.
In the wake of Ramallah, the Mossad dispatched a Kidon team led by a young assassin named Ariel, the"Lion of God", to Europe to track down and kill Mustafa al-Shukeiri, the man responsible for the lynchings. A mission which ended in blood and fire one dark night on the Mediterranean island of Elba.
They thought it was the end. But it was only the beginning. . .
For al-Shukeiri's plans ran far deeper than anyone had dared suspect. And the Americans are involved.
And as Ariel's Kidon team races to stop a "weapon" from being transported out of Saddam's Iraq and into Palestinian hands, only one thing seems
No one can be trusted. And the safety of the Jewish state is in their hands.
Stephen England is the author of the bestselling Shadow Warriors thrillers, including Amazon's #1 Bestselling Political Thriller, Pandora's Grave, and its long-awaited sequel, Day of Reckoning--a novel hailed as "the perfect spy thriller for our time--chaotic, cynical, with only a few good men keeping the barbarians from the gate."
Drawing upon nearly a decade of research into the nature of Islam, the Middle East, espionage and counterterrorism operations, England's work has drawn praise for breathing new life into the genre with the hard-edged, unsparing realism of his portrayal of the war on terror, the people who wage it, and the moral and psychological costs exacted of those who take the war to the enemy where he lives. "Soldiers without uniforms. Fighting a war without end. Shadow warriors. . ."
The short stories NIGHTSHADE and TALISMAN round out the Shadow Warriors series, and England's work also includes the stand-alone historical adventure novel, Sword of Neamha.
Since this title normally isn’t available outside the US, the author was kind enough to provide me a copy, in exchange for an honest review.
Most of the big names in the Military/Spy thriller genre, need cinematic action pieces to create the nail-biting, page-turning suspense in their novels. But only the very best of the best, can create this kind of suspense, without having a single shot fired on page. Stephen England is one of these select few and the second episode of the “Lion of God Trilogy” proves just how far he has come as a writer, over the course of just four novels and five short stories and novellas!
Episode 2 picks up where the first ended. It is the year 2000 during the second Intifada and Mossad and CIA aren’t at the best of terms. Meanwhile an Iraqi general prepares to sell chemical weapons to a Palestinian terrorist, in order to launch a devastating attack that would shatter even the last bit of hope for peace in the Middle East…
Once again, England’s meticulous research shines through every page. He takes you right into the middle of historical events, while seamlessly blending fact with fiction, even if you have no extensive knowledge of the region yourself (like me), you can still feel how deep his understanding for the Middle East and it’s different cultures is!
Like I mentioned at the beginning, this novella includes no blistering gunfights and explosions (even if England has proven in the past, that he can write both in perfection), but a fascinating view into the inner workings of intelligence agencies and how real politics can foul everything up. Over the course of only 90 pages, England again manages to tell a complex and suspenseful tale, that other authors can’t hope to reach even with a much higher page count!
The characters are very likeable (or despicable in case of the villains) and are nuanced in their portrayal. They often have more depth than their counterparts in full-length novels. And of course, fans of England’s Shadow Warriors Series will again see some familiar faces.
All things considered, I can’t recommend this author highly enough and will eagerly await the conclusion of this stunning trilogy!
On one hand, it is such a difficult and unbelievably complex ongoing ancient narrative & yet one that from day to day is so simple. Survival. At all costs. Kill or be killed. Outwit or be outwitted. It’s a continuous dance with death, every minute, every day, every year, ad infinitum.
Another amazing read by Stephen England. A spythriller without any explosions or shots fired and still awesome. I highly recommend this very amazing author to everybody who likes thrillers. As this was never available outside the US, I got the trilogy from the author. Part 1 he has already released independently on Amazon today. The other 2 parts will follow soon. Trust me you want them and will continue with his Shadow Warriors series. Support independent authors !!! They actually want to hear from their readers and you basically can ask them any question.
