Strength does not come from pride or narcissism. It comes from humility and trust.

A devotional on doubt that leads to the arms of Christ. All of us whether we follow Christ or not have doubts. Believe it or not, doubt can increase your faith as you cling to the promises of Christ. However, when we put ourselves in isolation or let bitterness or self-indulgence settle in, we grow further from Christ. This devotional explains what doubt is and how we can bring our doubt to a stronger faith where we experience the grace of God. In experiencing the grace of God, we can share that grace with others.

I appreciated the fact that faith doesn't have to say that everything will work out the way I hope for it to but what we can say instead how might God chose to work. Many times I see God working more in my life when it doesn't work out the way I want it to. When I didn't get that job, or that opportunity. It makes me now think that the Lord may have someone better than myself or that Lord is teaching me something or something better is coming. Faith is about trust not about what you receive. Grace is what you receive.

Fitzpatrick is transparent in her teaching and always showing others that Jesus is better.

Overall a strong book with a few weaknesses in my judgment.

Strengths:
- Good gospel reflections and assurances are laced throughout.
- She deals with a wide variety of sources and types of doubt: doubting the veracity of the Bible, doubting God's goodness in suffering, etc.

Weaknesses:
- Flip-side of strength #2: it comes across as scattershot. A given struggler with doubt will probably find big chunks of the book unhelpful.
- There is not much about walking with others (esp. brothers, sisters, and pastors in the church) in the battle with doubt.
- In my view, the historical proof apologetics are not very helpful.

Good overall—definitely helpful in parts. I gleaned a few things I had never really thought about before, and there was some good truth to focus on. Much of the emphasis was on doubting God’s love and care for us. Perhaps incorrectly, I expected more content that would encourage me personally or that I could use in conversations with others about resting in and trusting the Christian faith in general. While there was some of that, it wasn’t as much as I anticipated. Still, it’s a good resource, especially if your doubts tend to center around feelings of shame, guilt, or relational disconnect with God, rather than doubts about God Himself.

Elyse Fitzpatrick books are clear and deep. She loves to share bible truths straight. If you are dealing with doubt (as we all are at certain times in our lives) these devotionals are going to be a glass of fresh water while you walk on your desert. This could be a great gift for a friend who is dealing with doubt. May God help our unbelief.

Great devotional - I read the one on contentment to start the year. I wish this one would have a reflection/question style ending similar to others in the series.

You can read my fuller review at Spoiled Milks (8/30/19).

In her introduction Fitzpatrick states that everyone has doubts, even her, a biblical counseler (9). One can be a Christian for decades and still wonder sometimes (or often), "Is all this Christianity stuff really—I mean really—true?" (9). If God is real, why hasn't my life turned out the way I thought it would? Why do I still struggle with sin, the same sins, and with belief?

After talking about key doubters and how God still showed them grace, Fitzpatrick spends some time showing proofs for your faith. I didn't find this section particularly strong, but perhaps this is because my own doubts usually lie elsewhere. There just isn't enough space to cover such massive topics. But Fitzpatrick knows that and so provides some websites in the endnotes.

Our confident faith lies in the fact that God knows us, loves us, and he has silenced the accuser. We need this confidence when we endure trial and suffering, asking the Lord how long it will last. In our half belief we ought to consider the Lord who took on flesh and suffered so that he could sympathize with us.

What will be refreshing to many is how Fitzpatrick shows how normal doubt is. Everyone doubts. You are not terrible for it. Questions are not bad. The Bible doesn't systematically answer every question we have. Hopefully this book will help relieve doubt and help others understand that Christians can doubt.

Don’t expect this to solve everything. Reading it daily will help you to soak up her advice. Take her questions seriously. Read the Scripture she advises and think through it. If you struggle with doubts, consider picking up Fitzpatrick's devotional

Doubt is a common experience, and yet many people say that if you doubt, you’re not a Christian. But doubt is a part of the human experience in a fallen world. This devotional builds up the reader by showing that doubt was everywhere in the Bible, yet that didn’t stop God from choosing those people for His purposes, and it also explores God’s promises to His people. If you struggle with doubt, know that you’re not alone. I recommend this book to those who have doubts yet still want to believe.
