Ten minutes in the future, the world runs on an economy of job shares and apps, including Reapr: a crowdfunding platform to fund assassinations. Charlie Ellison leads a quiet, normal life until she’s suddenly targeted by a million-dollar Reapr campaign. Hunted by all of Los Angeles, Charlie hires Vita, the lowest-rated bodyguard on the Dfend app. As the campaign picks up speed, they’ll have to figure out who wants Charlie dead before the campaign’s 30 days—or their lives—are over. From Eisner-nominated writer CHRISTOPHER SEBELA (Heartthrob, We(l)come Back, Harley Quinn), RO STEIN & TED BRANDT (Captain Marvel, Raven: The Pirate Princess), TRIONA FARRELL (Runaways, Mech Cadet Yu), and CARDINAL RAE (BINGO LOVE, ROSE).

For a 30-page start to the story, this installment manages to pack quite a lot in. I found myself incredibly intrigued right from the first page. The authors do a really good job of establishing a world that I immediately wanted to know more about because it's so ingrained in our characters' lives. Everyone who has read more than one review from me knows that I read mostly for the characters and really could not care less about the plot unless the characters make me care about it and this graphic novel did just that! I am extremely curious to know more about both of our main characters and I cannot wait to see what's going to be revealed about them in future installments. Unfortunately, this installment on its own didn't have much going for it because it was the beginning and I wasn't as invested in the story as I wish I could have been, which is why my rating is a three star, HOWEVER, I am planning on continuing with the series because I really do think this is one of those cases where it's going to get better and better as the series continues.

"Crowdfundead"...…...

That title above was the series name they originally played with, and I like it. I also liked the first issue of the series, and am keen for the first volume, (comprising the first few issues and the full original story arc), to come out in March of 2019. I'm posting this review now, even though we only have the first issue available, because I liked this series enough to want to encourage interest in it.

This was sort of a three way hit. The idea of crowd funding assassinations, and of a defender app, is a brutal parody of where we are at the moment. The authors underplay it and that deadpan approach actually makes it sharper and edgier. On top of that it's clear that our heroine Charlie is not the innocent nobody she claims to be, so there's a mystery there to be uncovered. Finally, Charlie and her defender, Vita, who's a low rated Dfend bodyguard for an as of yet undisclosed reason, have a very funny love/hate relationship, so the banter and crosstalk is clever and fast paced.

The art supports this nicely, being a little impressionistic, with big color and sharp edges. The pacing is fast, the inking is just right, and a variety of lettering approaches keep the comic looking modern and sharp.

All in all an entertaining and promising find. (Please note that I had a chance to read a free ecopy of this book without a review requirement, or any influence regarding review content should I choose to post a review. Apart from that I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.)

I like where this comic series is going and I’m very curious as to why Charlie is so, fake, for lack of a better word. I’m also very curious about Vita and want to learn her backstory.

Crowded is a new series by Image, and it’s jokingly described as being ‘ten minutes in the future.’ In this not too far off future, Charlie finds herself the target of a mass hit. You see, people in this age can crowdfund anything and everything, including hits. Those hits last as month long campaigns. During that time it seems like anybody that wants the money just has to…well…they sort of have to kill the target. In this case that means they have to kill Charlie.
They did a great job establishing this series. I don’t love Charlie, but I’m also clearly not supposed to. She’s hiding something, either intentionally or not. Sure, there’s a chance she really doesn’t know the reason behind all of this, or that she’s lying to herself, or something along those lines. But none of those would explain the sheer number of people willing to help fund her campaign, now would it? So we have danger, mystery, and a lot of sass all rolled into one issue, and we haven’t even talked about the other main character.
I love Vita’s character. They’re competent as hell, and while they may have a bad rating on Dfender (another app you can hire people for – in this case it’s specifically to hire body guards), but as they put it; those people were alive to leave those bad ratings. It’s a pretty solid point. Vita clearly cares more about keeping their targets alive than by keeping them happy. Given the alternative, I’m okay with that. Clearly their clients are too stupid to see it that way.
It’ll be interesting to see how these two work together in the long run, as clearly they’re quite different from one another. I think Vita can keep Charlie alive, assuming that Charlie stops acting dumb for at least one minute. We’ll see how that goes.
Along with being intriguing, this series did a good job of dropping some humorous moments. My favorite was probably the first attempt on Charlie’s life. It doesn’t sound funny when you put it like that, but it ended with coffee being thrown into somebody’s face and Charlie running off with the would be assassin’s dog. I think that’s a fair exchange, don’t you? And yes, the dog seems to be hanging around. I wonder if that’ll come back to bite them in the end? No pun intended. But seriously, I can see the owner having one of those dog trackers, especially given the tech in this near future.
I can’t wait for the next issue to come out. I really want to see what happens next. I’m already invested in what happens to these characters, and I may or may not be shipping them already. Totally not ashamed of that or anything.

I loved the concept, the characters, and the art style. It's a commentary on the culture of today but in a fun way. Obviously the main joke and pun was about crowd funded assassinations and that it's crowded in Vita's house with Charlie there. I was most interested in the ideas of hustle culture and anonymity on the internet that were explored. There's talk of how much Charlie is getting done in a day, and though she is checking boxes it's not actually fulfilling (she's not fully interacting in the world around her). But instead of a bitter view it is showing how she is mostly likely running away from herself. The other thing is with the ending and finding out a friend had donated to the crowd funding for her assassination. With the information being readily available about who wants who killed I think the story will progress to explore this idea more and it will be really interesting.

This is the a case study in style carrying the story across the finish line.

That could have been a critique, but in a situation like the one we have here, it can be a marvel.

The art style is so effervescent and the world that the characters leap about in so charming that you quickly forgive the tired story.

An absolute gem of a first issue, all sparkly and shiny. One hopes that the brilliance carries on.

I picked this up because I’m really into Chris Sebela’s writing in House Amok and I’ve continued to hear awesome things about this story. It’s fantastic. I loved it and I’m planning on picking up the rest of them tomorrow at the comic shop.

The art is spectacular. I love it.

Killings can be legal.

Good color artwork, image freebie. A young woman is surprised that there is a huge amount of money being raised for her death? She hires a low rated body guard online and plays dumb. Keeping her alive won't be easy.

It's a #1, but it sets up a fun world with a kind of weird situation for our protagonist. Can't wait to see what happens next

Fun start

I like the art. The colors are vivid, I like the angles but the androgrony is starting to wear thin. It's boring now.

Review: Interesting story plot, mostly trying to find out why one of the main girls has just a big bounty on her head, and how the society in the comic work out. I mean it's very mob mentality, which is never good. Although, it was interesting, and lots of info at once. I don't think I will be reading more of the comic Crowed any time soon.

Girl hires a body guard to protect has as assassins try to kill her. You never find out why they are trying to kill her, even though the body guards asks multiple times. Instead the target seems more interesting in sassing the bodyguard and telling her about how she stole a dog.

No wonder a lot of the Image #1 comics are free they're all awful.
