All Kat Montgomery wanted was a fun night out on the town. What she got was a death warrant. As it turns out, the quaint little hamlet of Mystic Harbor, Maine houses more than sandy beaches and adorable B&B’s. Beneath the New England charm rests a deadly world where shifters, demons, vampires, and angelic hunters all vie for power.

A world where magic is the greatest weapon.

Magic that Kat now possesses.

After that one fateful night, she can feel the changes beginning to take hold of her. Only problem, she doesn’t even know what she’s turning into. With threats hiding in plain sight, deciphering the lines between friend and foe is nearly impossible. As if things couldn’t get any worse, Kat learns her only real ally rests in the one person she can’t stand: Reese Blackburn, an insufferably handsome magician whom the town fears most.

She didn’t know the charming New England town was a hotbed of danger filled with vampires, demons, shifters and angelic hunters. It was only a night out with friends, but that night would be the turning point for Kat Montgomery and the new direction her life was taking would be both deadly and terrifying and the lone wolf at school would be the one who tries to save Kat as their strained relationship grows into one of trust and survival.

Something is happening in Mystic Harbor and it carries the stench of evil. Something is also happening to Kat and she is both clueless and terrified of what it is. Can she trust Reese Blackburn, a strange young man who actually has magical abilities? He would never win a congeniality contest, but there is something deeper that speaks to his sincerity.

Those Kat saw as friends are keeping secrets, including her ex-boyfriend, whose loss she never understood, until now…but is he actually evil or misguided? What of the clandestine group he is part of? As Kat and Reese fall further into the pits of hell in a world where she discovers her own awakening powers, will Kat find she is the biggest monster of all? Maybe Fate has its own plan for Kat that even the monsters cannot see.

Keep your eye on Victoria Evers, her foundation entry for The Marked Mage Chronicles Series, INSIDIOUSis a non-stop unveiling of brilliant characters, a tantalizing plot filled with more twists than a Twizzler all wrapped up into one riveting read! Ms. Evers builds a world where the hook is set within a few pages, then shifts gear into the “reeling us in” stage that never lets up! Great pacing, an atmosphere that shifts between light and dark, the known and the unknown, the mysterious and the downright terrifying, INSIDIOUS has heart, a healthy dose of magic and one heroine caught in the middle of an unfriendly game of tug-of-war. There is pure meat here, no added fat to be trimmed…and I thought my high school days were hellish…Read it, it’s hidden gem uncovered!

I received an ARC edition from Victoria Evers in exchange for my honest review.

I recieved a free copy of this book in return for my honest review :)

Mystic Harbor is just like any other Maine town. But not all is as it seems. Beneath the sleepy exterior of this place, a deadly paranormal war is being waged. When Kat Montgomery is caught in an accident one night, she finds herself caught up in a world of magic, power, and danger that she never dreamed possible. All she has to do is survive.

I had never heard of Insidious before I started it, which was nice because I went in with no expectations. And let me just say, that this book absolutely blew me away. I was sucked into the story right from the first chapter and was kept riveted throughout the entire 400+ pages. I had to keep reminding myself that this is Victoria Evers' first novel, because she writes like a professional. The pacing was perfect; there was just the perfect amount of action and worldbuilding that it didn't drag at all. I loved the characters, especially Kat. She just seemed absolutely so real and down to earth, despite all the crazy paranormal stuff that was going on around her. She is definatley someone I would love to hang out with! And my favorite aspect of the story was actually the mythos surrounding the Revenants. I won't go into too much detail, because I don't want to spoil it for you, but honestly it was such an intriguing background and description of the magic and how it worked that I am almost desperate to read the next book in the series.

I actually enjoyed this book so much that I am considering purchasing a physical copy in addition to the ebook version that I recieved. I plan on reading and enjoying it again and again!

*Received Arc in exchange for an honest review*

Let me just start by saying…
MIND. BLOWN!!!

description

I really wasn’t anticipating this. After reading “A Court of Mist and Fury,” I had the worst book hangover ever! Three reads later, and I still couldn’t shake it. Then the author contacted me, asking for a review. Now I have a whole new book hangover, because “Insidious” is amazing! And it’s her FIRST freaking book!

description

The story starts in Mystic Harbor, Maine where 17-year-old Kat Montgomery decides to enjoy a night out with her friends. Unfortunately, things quickly take a turn for the worse. And they don’t get any better. I don’t want to spoil anything, but the mystery and suspense in this book just builds and builds until you seriously feel like you’re going to have a panic attack (in the best possible way). The pacing is spot-on, the characters are great, and the plot twists—just, WOW! That’s all I can say.
Fans of Supernatural and The Vampire Diaries will rejoice in this amazing first installment. Evers crafts a riveting paranormal thriller that will leave you breathless and begging for more. I know I am. I want to know more about these characters, especially the guys.

Reese Blackburn, the resident outsider, definitely had my heart racing on more than one occasion. Between his “magician” sense of style and overall demeanor, all I could picture was Sebastian Stan from Once Upon A Time.

description

Yeah, never a bad thing. :)

And then there’s the “villain”. Yes, I say “villain” in quotations, because I have a feeling he really isn’t as bad as he seems. Sure the guy does some really really really bad things, but there’s something about him I can’t shake. Definitely picking up on some Warner “Shatter Me” vibes here. And to that I say:

description

I know. I know. It might be a bit masochistic of me to not completely hate *secretly like* him, but I think the more we get to know about him the more we will like him.

As for the writing style, Evers knows how to pace a story. A lot of books over 400 pages long usually have lulls in them that make parts feel really really slow. This book didn’t have any of that. I seriously couldn’t stop reading, and when I had to, all I wanted to do was pick it up again. “Insidious” is a blend of paranormal, romance, mystery, and suspense, and Evers nails every genre, weaving them into one amazing, complex read. Easily one of my favorite books of the year! Well done, Miss Evers, well done.

Kat lives in a small town in Maine. She's a normal teenager with regular teenage problems. During a bonfire Kat is not feeling well and the town's golden boy, Blaine, offers to take her home. A terrible accident leaves Kat as the sole survivor. Her injuries should be a lot worse, but she walks away with severe bruises only. Not long after the accident Kat starts to feel weird. She is famished all the time and Kat swears she woke up floating above her bed.

Now that Kat is changing she needs to know what's going on. While she's looking for answers it turns out that not everyone can be trusted. Kat is used to taking care of herself, since her parents are not looking out for her. She's down to earth and is not easily fooled. She needs some persuasion when she's being told that she's become a changeling. Kat has no recollection of who made her that way. A whole bus with students vanishes as well and there are similarities. Will Kat be able to master her new abilities in time to defeat the ones who are coming for her?

Insidious is a fantastic story about the unseen creatures that live among humans. I have a soft spot for great looking covers and it was the beautiful design that got me interested immediately. Luckily the story itself is just as amazing. I was drawn in completely from the very beginning and didn't want to stop reading. Victoria Evers has written a unique story from an original point of view. I loved the unexpected twist and turns, which kept me guessing until the end. Insidious is a debut novel, but it can easily compete with books by established authors in the same genre. After reading Insidious I'm definitely a fan.

MY REVIEW
4.5 STARS

I was hooked into this story immediately! Well-told, engrossing and different, the author's imagination really brought the setting and the characters to life. The dialogue is particularly engaging, fluent, and often funny.

The heroine is likable and sassy. When her world is turned upside down she finds out who her real friends are and discovers that there are plenty of spooky and dangerous creatures in her small community. Suddenly she has become a target in an insidious conflict in which the lines between good and evil are blurred.

This is a suspenseful, magical tale that is sure to please even the most jaded paranormal readers. This new author is certainly one to watch! I am looking forward to the next adventure!

Wow just wow. I tend to read more adult romance than young
adult. But this book was so wonderful so do not pass it up
just because it is a YA book. It is extremely well written.
Toughly thought through, and was just so dam interesting.
I cannot wait for the next book.

This story is about a teenage girl (Kat) and the strange
goings on in the small town of mystic Harbor . at the
beginning of the book a whole buss full of kids goes missing.
And when you find out what happened to them let’s just say
it was not nice. But not long after that Kat is in a car accident
with her friend Blaine, and only she walks away. But she
does not go unscathed, she ends up changing physically.
But she has no one to help her but the strange boy in school
(Reese). He may be weird but he genuinely cares about Kat.
And when she finds out not only his secret but her ex's
Adam she is so unsure what to do. And then there is the
psycho stalker she does not know what to do with all that
is happening.

Now before I ruin this for you I will leave off here. I hope you
enjoy this book as much as I did. If you do like this book,
please consider leaving a review. The Authors really like it
when you do; they value your opinions too.

I need the next book NOW!

I preordered this book based on some great reviews from a blog I follow and had high hopes because I needed a good book in my life. It blew me away! I'm a huge fan of the show Supernatural and this book has similar monsters and backgrounds that I already know. The characters are great; love everything about them. I had to sit this book down twice to return to reality but managed to finish the story at 4 this morning. I am now going to reread it because I'm still on the "book high" and I need more!

Ok I actually kinda liked this?? We have Mages, Reapers, Hellhounds, oh and of course a Crown Prince of Hell. Very interesting combo if you ask me lol. My main issue is that it takes way too long to get to the actual story. You don't really know where the plot is planning to go until well over halfway. This includes character development as well, as we don't see much of that until over halfway. Even then the characters are really lacking and don't have much going for them. This could be so much better but it was still an enjoyable read for the most part.

Although I started this on April 25th and finished May 6th, it didn't actually take me that long to read it. I've been very occupied playing a new video game, and when I'm gaming, there's no time for reading. Oops.

I'm actually quite surprised with how much I liked this book.

Paranormal books set in modern day can be pretty hit or miss for me because while I love the fantasy aspects of the paranormal genre for expanding beyond the realm of tangible, the contemporary parts that usually accompany them often impact the world and characters negatively.

The first bit of the book did have me worried. It had a lot of random bits of awkward grammar and what not, so I wondered if the whole story would be plagued. I also wasn't super drawn in by the initial set up--what with Reese acting as edgy and mysterious and Kat seemingly having a complex dating life we're just pushed into and only explore later--but the longer things went, the more engaged I felt and the more I felt like the author was starting to hit her stride both with her technical writing and her story creating.

A few reviewers mentioned finding parts confusing, and I can concur that a few scenes could use some revision.

One issue I found was that during a fight scene, characters were called by their first names, then their last names, then their first names again, which is jarring because if you're used to Reese being Reese, it can take you out of the flow to sudden read "Blackburn", his last name, and remember that the author is still talking about the same character.

Another was that sometimes something would happen suddenly and the author wouldn't fully express why; it's like she was envisioning it like a movie, where the visuals fill in for what's not said, and didn't add in the necessary inner dialogue to let readers know why this was unfolding, so for several lines it's like "wait, why is this happening?"

Despite this, however, I didn't find the plot especially predictable and was engaged. The world building is interesting, the story is very action packed, I enjoyed Kat's character, I like Reese a lot, and I want to know more about the world and what's going to happen. The author set up enough unresolved things to make me feel like there has to be a larger plot in mind, so I'm hopeful.

There's not a whole lot else for me to say--I didn't notice much that was outwardly worth noting as a problem in context and since this is book #1, I'm giving the book the benefit of the doubt and believing that the things left hanging (like Kat's relationship with her parents) will be resolved more in proceeding books.

I initially had never picked this up despite having bought it because I wasn't seeing any real writing updates from the author--I loathe series that never conclude, so with this being the author's first work as an indie author, I was hesitant to get involved. With the publication of book 3 quite recently and seeing its length, I felt more comfortable with starting the series and hope that my leap of good faith sees the conclusion to the tale published before I stop caring.

Overall, it was a fun read! I'll be picking up book #2 here shortly.

Although I'm a little confused with that epilogue I still loved reading this story, it was full of suspense and action and kept me on the edge of my seat. I did find that I was a little confused in some places but it all made sense in the end and came together, I can't wait to see what happens next. Kats character was strong and she didn't take any shit from anyone and couldn't be manipulated, she was head strong and didn't act out of fear or act impulsively, she was pretty much always clear headed (most the time) haha. I liked reese and what he bought to the story, I'm intrigued by the epilogue about him and want to know more now! I loved carly and want more of her in book two!!! I also loved her "master" the main villain as well as the side bad guys were interesting to read about especially her master, finding out who he was, was a shock and surprising and made everything all the more fun and interesting to read about, he made for a great bad guy! I was sucked into the mythology and figuring out everything about this story and can't wait to read the next book!! It's nothing really original or anything but if you like paranormal romances with a little action and mystery then you'll enjoy this!

I’m not sure how I feel about this book. It was sort of jumbled. I don’t completely get what’s going on or what’s happening. I found too many similarities to the show The Vampire Diaries for comfort. Idk who to trust and who to root for. It seems like we are on deck for a love triangle and I kinda like both. I like Reese more because he’s nice. But I like the other person too, and I can’t pinpoint if they are evil either. Then there’s this overall plot of something going down with her (for the life of me I can’t remember her name right now!) that involves her but isn’t really explained. The book was still intriguing and gained my interest by having me constantly wonder where this was going.

Even with the end of the book and the reveal of who is causing all the problems I still am not sure where this is going. I may read book 2 just to see where it’s going.

Wow although a little confusing at times for a YA i enjoyed it, sometimes i find them a little too juvenile, the only aspect in this that annoyed me is everywhere Kat went she saw someone she knew, im surprised she was able to go to the toilet in peace.

After Kat meets up with the schools heartthrob a trip home turns deadly, Kat wakes up in hospital to hear her date had been killed in the accident, and she finds she's different.

After all this goes down More is slowly revealed in the story about Kat herself and some nasty supernatural creatures... I did get a little muddled on all that, but apparently if you get bitten your screwed.

I liked the writing style, i liked the twists i'm definitely going to get to book 2 soon!!!!

Thoughts

I have this weird little habit; I pick up books CONSTANTLY. My Kindle Unlimited Queue is consistently flush with 10 new books, along with a plethora of $0.99 deals, new releases, pre-orders and books that drop in price temporarily. That means that my Kindle is always bursting with new reads, ready and waiting for me to enjoy them. Often, by the time I get to them, I have already long since forgotten what the book was about - and I refuse to read the blurb again. This causes plenty of surprises in my reading adventures....

...and this book was one of the best surprises so far this year.

I was 17% into it before I even gained an inkling of what was going on, and at least 50% in before I thought I had a firm grasp on the plot - until Victoria Evers shook it all up and left me in the dust again. Honestly, it was GLORIOUS!

Kat is a Heroine that I cheered and saluted from page 1. While a typical teenager, she is far from the typical Urban Fantasy Heroine Trope... no, instead of just baldly accepting the strange and unusual happenings in her life, this chic steps back and goes, "Uhhh.... HELL NO!" And then she fights, and KEEPS fighting! She even fights the one who is trying to help her. Why? BECAUSE SHE HAS NORMAL FREAKING REACTIONS! I am so tired of these books where the FMC is like, "Oh? I'm Fae? That's cool... let's save the world!" (No, Kat is not Fae, I am throwing out a bad example.)

As for the other characters and the narrative? It's a complicated journey that grabs you from beginning and doesn't let go - even after the final page. The revelations and the questions they inspire linger, taunting a severe Book Hangover and theories to abound. It's well written, entrancing, inventive and, surprisingly? YA.

Perspective

First Person, Single POV

Ending Type

Cliffhanger......

Steam Level

Feelings emerge, but this is a YA and suits YA steam, even if the plot smacks you upside the head.

Pros:

~Incredibly well written.
~Well Edited.
~FMC.... Now Kat is the kind of Heroine you just love.
~Reese: I knew a guy like him in High School, or at least dressed like him. Who doesn't?
~Mythos: The inventive combining and changing of familiar themes, myths and biblical stories creates a lush and original world.
~May be a YA, but adult readers will LOVE this!
~That cover! (Cover Design by CivilAnarchy) Model is Miranda Hedman.

Cons:

~Long time between publications, though Book 2 is out now (review coming tomorrow!) and I understand that Book 3 should be published sometime soon.
~She's going to break my heart.... I just know it.

Holy crap on a cracker! lol I loved this book!! I was hooked 2% into the story, equal parts intrigued and terrified! This was not a tale I have read yet, it was fresh and exciting. Definitely got my blood rushing! There was so much suspense and action! I was gripping the edge of my seat waiting for what was going to happen next! Lots of twists and surprises that I did not see coming and some took my breath away! I absolutely love supernatural series and I'm so happy this was recommended to to me! It's been months since I read a supernatural thriller this good!! The characters were so love-able and (trustworthy)!! AKKK!! Lots of secrets between this group of friends. I feel like this should be made into a mini tv series!! It would definitely be all the rage! Kat was a great heroine, I instantly liked her and felt every emotion she was going through. Blaine, Reese and Adam had my blood heated for all kinds of reasons with so many mixed emotions! I have to know what happens next!! I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review

Thank you Victoria Evers for the opportunity to read your book. This was an alright read. I thought that the story was good. There were some parts where I was confused, while other parts were really interesting. I thought that the characters were good. I liked getting to know them better. I was really intrigued by them. Out of all the characters, I think Kat is my favourite. The epilogue was a bit confusing for me. I cannot wait to continue this series to see what happens next. Overall, an okay read.

In the charming, small town of Mystic Harbor, Maine there is a whole other world that is full of secrets floating around that most people of the town don’t know anything about; the deadly world of shifters, demons, vampires, and angelic hunters and they all vie for power.

Kat Montgomery is one of the ones who know nothing about this secret deadly world in Mystic Harbor. On one eventful night all of that changes for Kat when she ends up in a tragic accident that leaves one of her friends dead. Kat just wants to have a night out with all of her friends and have a good time without having to worry about what party or event her mom is going to drag her to next.

After this tragic accident strange things start happening to Kat which she does not understand. Kat is changing but the thing is she has no idea what she is turning into. Kat is being stalked at every turn. Someone just may want her dead or do they? Why are they following her? What do they want with her? What is happening to her?

She can’t trust anyone every time she does it ends up in disaster. But there is one person she may be able to trust but there is one problem; he lives on the other side of town, yeah the town’s bad boy Reese. Her mom would have a conniption fit if she found out but Kit may have no choice. I don’t think that it is too hard of a decision for her though because I think she secretly likes Reese. Well I don’t blame her one bit. Cute dude and all!

When I read the blurb for Insidious and saw that it had vampires, shifters, demons and the word deadly in it that is all I needed to know and I was hooked. I am so glad I gave Insidious a try it is so amazing. It is filled with so many twist and turns but they bog you down you just keep turning those corners wanting to get to the next one hoping to find out what is up ahead. The mystery just rains down on top of you and just when you think you have it all figured out then bam something else slams you in the face and you are like what, whoa, wait a minute, what just happened? I definitely didn’t see that one coming.

If you love a good vampire, shifter, demon, angel hunting, deadly world, killing book then Insidious is the one for you. Come on give it a try and step into the deadly world of vampires, shifters, demons and angel hunting who all want to be on top with all the power.

Promising start to the series, plenty of intrigue and action that kept me involved. I will say that it did seem like a fact dump when it came time for some splainin', and it also seemed like not only did they hit her with every supernatural in the book, but they threw in the book as well. It did seem a little overwhelming for a few, but I pulled myself together. Character wise I'm not a super Kat, our FMC, fan but there is definitely some potential. She has come across as juvenile and a tad immature to me so far. Shes not quite whiny... but its kind of close. Personality wise she was kind of all over the place so I couldn't really get on her wavelength...I feel like that was part of the plot though so I'm still on the fence. Reese our MMC I'm a huge fan of already, give me a Nerdy underdog and hes got me at hello lol!

Kat on a night out with her friends gets thrust into a whole new world of supernatural chaos when after a tragic car accident she miraculously makes it. Haunted by that night, not really remembering how she made it with not a scratch when she does remember the pain..she begins going through some physical, mental, and...magical changes. These send her into a tailspin of the "Am I crazies" and right into the arms of the school "weirdo" Reese. Reese is also not what he seems. As they try to find out what happened that awful night they discover and increase in demonic activity, murders, and someone is after Kat. Friends become enemies... and then maybe friends again as Kat tries to hold onto her humanity and also save the town.

I feel like the story line is interesting enough to maybe get me back for #2... especially with the happenings there at the end. We will just have to see.

What in the ever loving fuck did I just read?!?!

At first, I thought I might be able to plow through the horrendous grammar and non existent editing. But boy was I wrong! To be honest, I gave it a really, amazingly good try, I read half of this drivel. However, I just can't continue! The story (if you can call it that) seemed interesting in the beginning, especially the dark beginning and the marks on the MC's arm. But there are no questions answered half way through. Instead of keeping the mystery it just feels rather mean.

And can we just stop with the 'ly' words? Sarcastically, Instinctively, Exhaustingly (that one isn't even a freaking word). Speaking of making up words: uneatable! Shakespeare the author is NOT!

If you are thinking of reading this book, stop, pick up something else. Even a board book will do.

Absolutely Love!!

I fell in love with this book from the very beginning. It left you guessing and wanting to find out more. The characters were engaging and easy to connect with. It was different and I couldn't put it down. I seriously cannot wait for book 2 I'm this serious! Highly recommend to all, you won't be disappointed! <3

Insidious is one of those books that you cannot put down--even though it does get confusing in some parts but overall this book was pretty interesting. All of the characters work extremely well with each other and have great backstories. I absolutely loved Kat throughout the book and I cannot wait to read the next book---which I will get ASAP. Fun read. Really enjoyed it.

I can’t. I tried to stick with it but after that crazy long reveal with the running away and the pepper spray and everything! It was too frustrating! I couldn’t get into the story after that. Plus I don’t like the set up. One bite and you’re evil? You’re telling me she’s not going to get bitten? Yeah right.

I enjoyed this story. Full of action with light romance. I do want more of Reese and Kat, I don't feel like they gave them enough time together. Hopefully the next book will have more these too. Can't wait to read the book 2.
