Rate this book
The night before their wedding, her fiancee ran off with his mistress.
Out of frustration, she grabbed the man standing in front of the Civil Affairs Office, "President Mo, your bride has not arrived and my groom has run away...May I suggest we get married?"
Before marriage, she said, "Even if we were to share the same bed, nothing would happen between us!"
After marriage, he said, "If we don't try, how would we know?"

Update 7/3/20: I finally finished! I'll be cleaning up the review soon. For now, I'll celebrate that I read a webnovel of over 1000 chapters. (Likely my first and only since it's a time consuming task.0

Truthfully, idk what made me think reading a 1274 chapter novel was a good idea. I've lost sleep for almost a week now. But... it's also addictive.

Due to its repetitive plot structure, undeveloped ensemble cast, and the fact that it's too long, I can't rate it higher than 3 stars. There are undeniable flaws. Yet there's also a lot that stands out.

Despite the characters being undeveloped, I am nonetheless amazed that the author can craft amazing PR strategies to the countless situations that Tangning and those around her face. Not to mention that each character has a unique background, story, temperament. (I do admit most could have been better fleshed out.)

One of the things that I appreciate the most is how Tangning and Mo Ting are both characters with high integrity who are also capable of being ruthless. While they do not initiate an attack on others, they also don't sit idly by as they or their loved ones are attacked. I think of them as chaotic neutrals. They give as good as they get.

I also really enjoy the complicated relationships. While there's undoubtedly the classic trope of sister versus sister, there's also some sweet relationship moments for most of the relationships and hard-won victories for underdogs.

I'm not sure if I would recommend it to anyone-- mainly because I can't think of another person who'd willingly sit through 1200 chapters. (That's like more than 12 books!) But if you're willing to take on the task, I do hope you can enjoy it.

Overall, I have learned a lot and have truly appreciated my reading experience with this webnovel. I've laughed. I've cried. I've been amazed.

Overall, and for a webnovel, this was quite good, kind of addictive... But at some point I felt tired and stuck in a loop of repetitive events.
One thing I want to mention tho is that, this is the first novel of its genre I read that openly and directly criticises the media. That's a good point.
Otherwise, the epilogue is more of a fan service in my opinion. It's about the kids when they grow up and their love struggles ..

I read this few times this year and never get tired of it. Eventhough the storyline is quite repetitive but the way Tangning deflected accusations against her by herself at the start and thru great PR Team later on, kept my adrenaline charged. I'm not saying there's no flaws in the way PR handled each defamation toward their artists. There is but it gets tiresome. And u will wonder it's the same old thing happened all over again.

What I didnt understand is Tangning 'ability' to implicate herself in scandalized situations throughout the story via defamation and betrayal. How is it that people simply are just against her? Is it because she's too calm, collected and graceful, capable in everything in the fields that she endeavored? It's kind of overrated to a certain extent. I guessed it boils down the story is focussing on. Her rise to fame are full of adversity and heartache. And at the end of the day, she chose to remain honest and passionate while achieving her goals without losing her dignity and integrity.

The reporters and those from the entertainment industry are vicious. Jealousy breed all evils. Most dont want the truth or spread truth. I guessed as long as their story sells, they couldnt be bothered who is going to be their casualty. And her fans are easily swayed too. Fanatics are real biased and stupid. U can just give a neutral statement and they will overturn it into something else.

Bottom line is no point arguing with these people without proof or evidence. Even that being said and done, they will reject everything. I'm not sure if all these people are simply being too brainy or brainless, definitely not blind. Aren't reporters supposed to investigate whatever news they receive and collaborate with sectors involves? Yeah they are not police. They are just reporting.

And yeah, eventhough the plot one after the other are almost similar, the people and setting are slightly different. Not forgetting family issues from both side of the party between Tangnin and Mo Ting and their romance. I cant even fathom the reason behind Hua Wenfeng hatred against Tangning.

Toward the end of the story are all about her children. I like Ziyan and Qingli the most. It's like Mo Ting and Tangning all over again. But u will wonder where is the love that Mo Ting held for his children. He seems to be estranged from them and devoid of paternal love. He didn't harm or abused his children. He didnt pamper them either. His life seems to be all about Tangning and no others. A man whom needed his wife babying him forever but he gave his all too. 🤔

Protagonist is inimitable, but the story line and events are repetitive. I enjoyed the first arc of the novel . However, following the arc, it seemed like the entire universe was conspiring against her. She had an unending list of rivals she had to trounce, hence, I DNF at ~30% mark.

Also, boasting about Mo Ting's power became too much after a while- sure, we get it: He is indomitable and would do anything for Tang Ning. In the end, both Mo Ting and Tang Ning (after the first arc) became one-dimensional characters without any growth. Their sole purpose was to defeat the rest of the characters. No one could touch them. It's boring to read such rigid characters after a while.

DNF at chapter 496/1274. The heavens (read: author) must really hate the female lead because no matter what she does or where she goes she begets haters by the dozens whose abuse she would "calmly" endure until readers feel their teeth creak with frustration, then end up "face slapping" them in a supposedly thoroughly yet not really satisfying fashion. This cycle repeats. Indefinitely. There’s no reason to let things get so bad before you do damage control especially if you could’ve done it way before that point.

Everything is very same-same, no real high or low points. The netizens would constantly hate on her then change their mind after her innocence is revealed and swear to never doubt her again, then the next scandal would break out and right back to square one we go.

This is one of those reads where I do want to know how things will end (mainly because there isn't an overarching arc and no real end goal), yet I know that once I finish I would just be frustrated at having wasted my time. I thought Hidden Marriage would be like this yet it ended up surprisingly entertaining and funny enough for me to finish it all, but not so in this case. There's no real spark to keep me going, so I'll cut my losses here.

More of a wishful fulling revenge story than a romance that is oddly very satisfying. Tangning a former model is shocked to discover that her would be groom and company manager, Han Yufan, is carrying on with Mo Yurou, a fellow model. Tangning blacklisted in the industry for having given up everything to be with Han Yufan, realizes that she has been played for a fool and marries a powerful handsome stranger by the name of Mo Ting on a whim. She quickly moves into his very luxurious home in the Hyatt Regency together they work on her comeback to the industry.

There is something about the heroine that transitions from a meek, kind and generous person to a formidable opponent with lots of secret maneuvers. She does not initiate anything herself except for the marriage, yet she foils each attempt to sabotage her. However I was also a little uneasy about the portrayal of cattishness between the women in the story, and stereotypical characterization. Plus it all became annoyingly repetitive, with most of Tanging's interactions falling into the same pattern of jealousy and sabotage.

Though the starting was good but went overboard with the plot. It dragged on unnecessarily way too much to the point of exhaustion. Same pattern over and over again. Some issues were totally off even in such mess. The ending plot was kind of a let down. No quality but quantity.

I was honestly hooked with this story. I discovered this story from an imitation story posted on Facebook. However, they only posted the 1st chapter and I wanted to read more so I searched for it and it turns out it was from Trial Marriage Husband. The first 900 chapters got me thrilled but it eventually turned draggy and the timeline at the end got a little messed up but otherwise I definitely recommend this story. Because of Tangning and Mo Ting's flawless personalities, it's pretty hard to believe that there are people like them who exist in real life but their dedication to their work and Tangning's patriotism is admirable.

The end of the story was more about Tangning and Mo Ting's children so if you are hoping for the MoTang couple to appear in every chapter then you may need to lower your expectations (but they pop out here and there). Although I am happy with how their children turned out, I was very curious to see how the rest of the characters progressed in life because they also played a vital part in the story.

Repetitive plot, yet still difficult to stop reading. I struggled with the authors apparent thoughts on how American must see Chinese people.... and the negative thoughts they clearly had towards anyone outside of China. Like, I get it... the USA is kind of a trash country in a lot of ways.... but that didn’t help me feel less cringy about the whole thing.... Aside from that, this could make a really sweet show with very little tweaking of the major plot points.

Going into this I knew what I was getting, a pure genre piece and that's what I got. It was solidly executed and if you're in the mood for something like this I'd recommend giving it a go. I think it's a step above similar novels in the genre for a few reasons which I'll dive into below.

The Good:

Strong female lead and cast.

No sexual violence. Seems sad that this is a pro but webnovel's sure do love their sexual violence and this particular genre has several popular entries where the ML (repeatedly) rapes the FL. There is one incident where you know a character was raped. But it happens "off screen".

Healthy relationship between the MC and ML. Both of them help one another, they show mutual love and respect. Their sexual relationship feels like something that actual people would do.

Solid character progression. The characters, well largely the MC with a few notable side characters, experience some growth and change across the novel. The novel takes place across three broad career arcs and the transition between them is always justified in the text (not that I'm necessarily a fan but it is what it is).

The faceslapping is satisfying. It generally doesnt involve too much unbelievable bullshit, maybe a few too many happy coincidences but all in all its enjoyable.

Some interesting commentary on the media and its relationship with and effect on the entertainment industry

So the main things you're reading this for, romance and face-slapping are well done. So what are the problems?

The Meh:

It's probably too long. It doesn't feel hugely bloated but there are a few arcs involving "minor villains" that didn't do a huge amount for the plot and could be excised to give the novel a tighter overall feel.

Some side characters largely disappear after their arcs. I think the author could have introduced less side characters and used the ones that they created for longer/a bit better.

I will say before I get into this that I'm not sure if these are unique to the author or are cultural issues. Considering they pop-up a lot in Chinese webnovels across all genres I think it might be the latter.

The Bad:

Sexism. It doesn't pop up often. Which makes it all the more jarring because when it does pop up it is some blatant bullshit.

Homophobia/Transphobia - Again, very rare, but very(,very) blatant. Shit like "He couldn't possibly be a transvestite because he was too manly."

Toxic gender roles - This is a bit more common, but again not supercommon (certainly not considering the book is 5K+ pages). But it's the usual "Women should have children. Men should be manly." shit. Even though the book frequently explicitly eschews those kind of tired gender roles. There's an entire sub-plot about it.

Children - This is related to the point above. But every character is so fucking obsessed with people having kids that it deserves its own negative point. Then when they kids pop up they are largely relegated to set dressing.

Our Glorious Nation! - Soldiers and police are tippy toppy great. The glorious nation of China is great. Fuck the US (which I can agree with at least). Everyone should be a happy and healthy member of society. Entertainers have a moral obligation to contribute to society, etc.

People get too easily forgiven - Minor "villains" tend to get a free pass and are forgiven due to the main "villain" of that arc getting their due comeuppance e.g. the son who watched his mother get raped and beaten and lied about it, the husband who beat his six year old daughter to death fell in love so its cool (that one was particularly repugnant), an obsessed director who lets his daughter starve to death and a few other odious examples.

Another Asian novel, (Chinese Origin)
I was honestly hooked with this story. I discovered this story from an imitation story posted on Facebook. However, they only posted the 1st chapter and I wanted to read more so I searched for it and it turns out it was from Trial Marriage Husband.

It’s a story about a couple, Tang Ning and Mo Ting who marry each other because Tang Ning’s fiance cheated on her and Mo Ting’s fiancee never showed up for marriage. Tang Ning proposes Mo Ting to marry her, given their similar circumstances and Mo Ting agrees. Then it’s all about exacting revenges on her family, her fiance, making and eliminating more enemies and striking forever friendships along the way.
Everything screams generic about this novel. Tang Ning was a model, got cheated by her lover, lost her international career for him, married Mo Ting who happened to be the king of entertainment industry and he launches her to become an actress. She takes on the role of producer and director later and that’s how her character grows. She also has the generic motto of I don’t make the first move. You attack me, I destroy you.

Mo Ting is your usual wife doting husband who grows from CEO of the best entertainment company in China to an actor and a scriptwriter because of his wife. Their friends and family have their own struggles and growth moments.
Perhaps the only good thing about the whole novel is the portrayal of netizens and how fickle minded they are. How they change their opinions about their idol in a moment and the hardships the people in entertainment industry have to go through, especially because of their so-called fans.
This is also one of the reasons I chose to review this novel. The recent incident with actors committing suicides or getting retreat from entertainment industry is just sad. Like however one looks that they don’t really care, somewhere if people keep bashing you for being yourself, then you can’t help but go into deep depression. Poor people, how much they would have been suffering to finally take that step.

If I'd only read the first half of this novel, I'd rate it a 3, maybe even a 4 but the last stretch of this story was so annoying it dragged the whole story down.

I enjoyed the beginning. The premise of two spurned and betrayed people coming together, falling in love and living happily is the ultimate of romantic endings. The main characters are strong and interesting people, especially the female protagonist. The series of events leading to her rise and the downfall of her enemies was exciting and satisfying. The only problem is that at some point, she started becoming a broken record of causing needless conflict, getting slammed by the public and then slapping them in the face.

This habit of hers, although described as not wanting to incite conflict is actually the root cause of all the repetition. It's smart to choose your battles but I think it's better to nip them in the bud when you can. It made my opinion of her plummet as it seemed like she was enjoying the conflict and being petty. Despite years passing, she doesn't grow and mature as a person, she gets more petty.

Some of this issue is the character herself but I think the majority of why this story bombed at the end, is the author. By the half point, the story was completely rinse and repeat like a student that's just lengthening needlessly to increase her word count. It angered me a lot that a story I liked so much had degenerated to this.

I would recommend reading the first half of the book but once you start feeling that the plot is going downhill, just stop reading. It doesn't get better from there.

Couldnt give it a 5...but I really enjoyed reading this webnovel. I especially love how long it is (only because I always like to see certain continuation of the books I enjoy reading).

However, I didnt like how it always mentions where her bottom line is when her enemies strikes when shes out for vengeance. If you read to hundred something chapters, I would think you already know the characters personality by now...anyways there were also some confusion with the translations from the translator where the names where mixed up so you gotta reread again to understand its a mix up. Examples: Zixi and Zichen or Mo Ting as well as other characters.

*spoliers*
Also, towards the end of the series - the epilogue, the calculation of Tanning and Mo Tings age didnt go with their childrens age. We are talking about the twins being 26 and the parents are around 40s? Meanwhile they were supposedly in their 30s when they met. Does this make any sense?...

I believe they can still continue this novel instead of having the epilogue (which was long for an epilogue). It could've been more in dept with the other characters stories making it longer (if it was a series, another book and their story).

dropped at chapter 781

I enjoyed the plot and all of the smaller arcs that followed Tangning's rise to fame. It was highly addicting to listen to the audio as I walked to classes and during chores. It does get repetitive (which is why I'm letting go now) but the situations are always interesting. The way PR handles the issues pertaining to their artists isn't always perfect which is realistic to an extent. The imperfections are what allow the situations to repeat in a slightly different manner. Regardless, the main point is that this is a tale in which the rise to fame isn't sweet and simple, but filled with heartache. Tangning got the best form of support she could have ever needed through her husband. The two main characters are faithful to each other. They love each other and respect the other's wishes and support the other wholeheartedly. It's a lovely relationship, but I do wish ML did show more interest and parental love to his and Tangning's children. All in all, I feel the place I dropped the story is fine since it does finish the arc and does leave it off at the place where I can rest easy knowing the two main characters and all of the supporting characters are doing well and will live happy lives.

Oh well, for something that I found plagiarized on a Facebook add, it was not that bad (2.5 stars at maximum). But all the troubles and backstabbing people in Tang Ning lives and the extreme power that Mo Ting (a simple entertainment agency CEO, let's be honest he is only that) has, are turning into a repeatable insanity. I did not finish this web novel, as I felt that 600+ chapters I've read are enough. Especially seeing as I not really a fan of modern world dramas at all and prefer Sci fi and fantasy.
The translation I was reading was mostly ok and easy to follow but made me wonder if we do not have any synonyms for "having face", "slapping face" (if you are not physical slapping people every time, maybe it should be substituted with any synonym of the word insult).
All in all, if you like modern world romance + entertainment industry dramas, this is something you will probably enjoy. If the Chinese literature you prefer is more wuxia and xianxia style, this will not be a book for you.

I enjoyed this web novel. I loved the characters of Tang Ning and Mo Ting. They were a perfect couple in a perfect world.

Tang Ning teaches everyone that a woman should learn to stand by her decisions and face the consequences to be respected. The woman knows what she wants and goes after it with such an amazing grace that the readers are left stunned. I enjoyed the methods she employed to get revenge and make people learn from their mistakes. She is a perfect example of karma as a bitch. I also enjoyed the chemistry between Ting and Ning He understands her and knows when to help and when to step back. He lets her grow on her own and does not attempt to bury her under his ego.

The reason for 4 stars is that just like other web novels it just started becoming boring due to repetition of the storyline. The author should have just left it when she got one happy ending. She attempted to destroy the woman’s career so many times it became tiresome after the first 2 tries.

I usually don't read novels. To be honest, I'm not even sure how I bumped into this one. I read the first 5 chapters and was hooked. It keeps you wanting to know what's going to happen next. I'm finding myself yelling and cussing out those who dare to mess with Tangning. At the same time wishing there was a real life Mo Ting. I believe this would make and awesome series on the TV screen though i prefer to read. The only thing I don't like is that I have to read it online. I would like it even more if I was able to buy the hard copy. I'm an old soul and prefer the smell of the book rather than the screen on my phone. If the author ever decides to get a publisher or independent print, all I can say is, take my money because it's most definitely worth it. If I could give it more than 5 stars, I would. Amazing read!

I fall in love with this novel because love after marriage, yet it's so beautiful love. But it's hard to keep reading for a whole days and need to take a rest for a while because i can't take it much (face slap forever-especially many things isn't involved Tangning but in force)... Quite boring because of that. I wish can story more about the cp. But anyway why many cp story is more interesting than faceslap part... Not every cp i like but truly this novel is more like husband and wife in dream! Tangning and moting part... It's good but the storyline about them not much different, in one dimension to me. Quite a lot unreasonable plot - some character is too dumb and only think about themselves, the netizen and reporters...wth with 'watching a show' it's like very unreasonable for me. Only sweet, loving scene betweeb family and couple are satisfied.

I will not lie; considering it's a translation from a Chinese novel, I understand some things are missing. Overall, I love the main characters, the idea of people changing over time, and learning. It is not the best-written novel, but I love it. It's so addictive. I finished in about a week, and there are some lagging points. Other than that, I love a feminine protagonist who presents other characters who have different ways of being strong, growing, and loving. Although there were some characters we still need to get deep into, I love the diverse presentations of status, relationship dynamics, and personalities. I love the antagonists and how some were just people who needed therapy, but that's cool. Whoever you are, author, thank you! It gave me a lovely week of things to occupy my brain with.

The interesting start caught my attention, however, I started getting annoyed with the cycle of events that followed thereafter. . By the time I got to around chapter 220, I curiously looked up the length of the novel and was shocked when I found out there were more than 1200 chapters. Yeah, no. There are so many other novels that are calling out to me. I enjoyed reading parts of this novel. I managed to get through the rest. I'm on to the next one.

The anti-Asian male viewpoints are grotesque. The constant references to western beauty as the standard made me furious and don't get me started on the "oriental" references. This work crosses the line of bias into racist too many times. I won't get into the author's exhibited sexism from the storyteller's perspective and not keeping it as only the character's perspective. I cannot count the number of times a female character was called "silly" or some "little woman". The author's constant insistence on referencing EQ or "emotional quotient" yet displaying little makes this drawn-out slugfest irksome.
This was too long and too disappointing.
