The 1st edition entails all the contents of the Basic and Advanced Skills with more details: the expansion of existing chapters, the addition of new chapters and the provision of new sheet music. For instance, alternative open strings setting will be introduced while a list of songs will be provided for readers who are interested to sit for graded examination of the erhu. After reading the whole book, you should know everything you need to know about the erhu and can play a lot of songs by yourself.
In response to the feedback from readers, the 2nd edition has been fully revised with new materials, ranging from the very basic to advanced skills that are conducive to mastering the erhu. It basically consists of three parts: Part I - details of the erhu, viz. knowing the erhu structure, choosing an erhu, setting up the erhu and maintaining the erhu; Part II - knowledge about playing the erhu, such as the numbered music notation, postures, fingering charts, fingering techniques (glissando, vibrato, trill, overtone, pizzicato), bowing techniques (legato, martelé, staccato, spiccato, tremolo, ricochet, double stop, bow hitting and neck bending), as well as ways to change the setting of open strings; and Part III - erhu sheet music and the list of songs under the Central Conservatory of Music Practical Examination for the Erhu. After reading the whole book, you should have known almost everything of the erhu and acquired all necessary skills with which you can play a lot of songs by yourself.
