The Reaper #2

Threat Zero

Rate this book
The next book in the explosive new thriller series by former special operations sniper and New York Times bestselling author of The Reaper.

A convoy of cars carrying several family members of the President’s cabinet to Camp David for “Family Day” is ambushed, killing and wounding wives, husbands and children.

Immediately in the aftermath, Vick Harwood watches a Facebook live feed of his former ranger buddy Sammie Samuelson’s apparent suicide and confession in his Thurmont, Maryland apartment, just one mile from Camp David. Remnants of a firefight are in the background: sniper rifle, rocket launchers, and ammunition. Simultaneously, an intruder breaks into Harwood’s house.

Harwood arrives in Thurman to investigate the suicide and, with the help of attractive FBI agent Valerie Hinojosa, traces evidence left by Samuelson to a fiendish plot involving transnational terrorists and domestic political opponents.

Meanwhile, the president wants retribution, and will stop at nothing to get it. Harwood joins Team Valid, whose mission is to kill the family members of terrorists and eliminate their seed from the earth. Team Valid, consisting of Hinojosa, Harwood, a Navy SEAL sniper, and a Marine Force Recon sniper, travels to Crimea, Iran, and Azerbaijan before realizing the mission is not what it seems. Harwood struggles to balance his orders with his sense of right and wrong—without losing his life in the process. As Samuelson is implicated in the Camp David ambush, it is a race to protect his remaining family and uncover the sinister plot in the homeland.

After a motorcade containing the POTUS's family is attacked, and destroyed, the President wants vengeance. He sends out The Reaper, who finds a very different conspiracy than the one expected.

Mostly run of the mill.

One of the worst books I've ever read. Silly, macho, cartoonish. Enormous buff ex-military types bustle around assassinating supposed terrorists. Corrupt politicians hire MS-13 gangs to take out their enemies - the buff ex-military dudes, who beat the MS-13 members in either hand to hand combat, or slit their throats, or shoot them. If you love exploding heads, you're going to love this. So many shot heads exploding.

One of the authors, Anthony Tata, is a retired brigadier general and huge Trump fan who has been an analyst on Fox and OAN (One America News, the Trump propaganda organ). Tata has called President Obama a Muslim, terrorist, anti-Semite; called former CIA director John Brennan a communist, argued he had pushed for Trump's assassination, and tweeted that he should be executed or commit suicide: "Might be a good time to pick your poison: firing squad, public hanging, life sentence as prison b*tch, or just suck on your pistol." Once these tweets and comments were "unearthed," even some Republicans were hesitant to support such a patriot. Tata's nomination by Trump to be an Under Secretary of Defense was withdrawn, although he was given the same job with a slightly different title which didn't require Senate confirmation: "the official Performing the Duties of the Deputy Undersecretary of Defense for Policy reporting to the Acting Undersecretary of Defense for Policy." Apparently that's how we do it here in the U.S.

The other author is a former military sniper.

The book's villain is a 6-foot tall (plus 4- and 5-inch Jimmy Choo and Louboutins) sexy former U.S. Senator who just ran for President and lost. Now her hobbies include having everyone around her killed, and screwing every hot man she runs into, sometimes between sheets, sometimes bent over a condo balcony in D.C.'s Wharf. Oddly enough though she has the values of a bleeding heart liberal. "Her support of abortion, increased gun control, free college tuition for all students, tax increases on the wealthiest two percent, and single payer universal health care anchored her hard-core leftist base." Mm hmm.

It would be inaccurate to say I lost interest in the plot, since I began at a very low ebb. I assimilated the plot's details for awhile, but at some point they got more and more ridiculous and there were too many. I have a vague memory of Iran and a nuclear weapon, but mostly what I remember is that when characters were meant to be sexy, they had copper-colored eyes. At least four characters had them.

I would be interested to know which author wrote which passages, because someone was extremely confused about the difference between "lay" and "lie." Lots of people were laying when they should have been lying. But occasionally there was a correct use - an author switch? (Also, no editors at St. Martin's Press?) The writing started out bad and got so much worse. There was a noticeable shift in the last few chapters, where there was a sudden drop from dumb and rote to simply appalling. Sentences like: "His opponent fell onto an older man, but he came up this time fumbling with a pistol, a Beretta to be more precise." The Epilogue explains: "They stood there for several minutes, embracing, reinforcing, and holding each other up, most likely." Most likely? You're the authors, but you're not sure what's happening in your own novel?

Well done to Nick and AJ on another incredible story! So many twists and turns along the way. They made the book impossible to put down. Vick Harwood is one helluva hero, and I can’t wait for more!

Reaper tries to be like Jack Reacher but does not come close. This installment in the Reaper series was a big disappointment.

The plot was unbelievable, confusing and oddly tedious. I found the entire reading experience deeply unsatisfying. The underlying premise is badly flawed and whilst I liked the protagonist, this book simply does not work.

This one gets one star and a deep sigh because reading 'Threat Zero' was not worth my time.

Following their hit series launch, Reaper: Ghost Target (2018), Vick “The Reaper” Harwood is back for more action in the latest high-octane thriller from Nicholas Irving and A.J. Tata.

What should have been a memorable weekend of fun quickly becomes unforgettable for all the wrong reasons. To log some much-needed relaxation and time with loved ones, President Bob Smart hosts his first ever “Family Day” at Camp David for members of his cabinet and their immediate family members. But just as the convoy of black SUVs rounds a secluded bend close to the president’s home away from home, a team of gunmen ambushes them—mercilessly slaughtering innocent men, women, and children.

Following the blood bath in Maryland, Harwood, one of the most deadly sniper’s in the history of the United States military, is sitting at home, helping Monisha—his foster sister of sorts—get ready for school when a Facebook notification pings on his phone. His old spotter, Sammie Thurmont, fires up Facebook Live, where he’s seen holding a gun to the bottom of his chin. Hoping it’s all some kind of sick joke, Harwood frantically tries to call his friend, who responds only by looking into the camera and saying, “I’m sorry, Vick,” before adding, “it’s all right in front of you.” Moments later, Sammy kills himself.

Harwood, too stunned to move, is pulled from his paralyzing disbelief when a noise at the backdoor brings him back to the hear and now. And when a gunman breaks . . .

A fast paced book that starts with an bloodbath as a convoy is struck on the way to Camp David. This sets the stage for a conspiracy for those lurking in the shadows to play America against itself to further a small group's goal of destabilizing the sitting president. The Reaper is a former special forces sniper with 33 kills during one deployment. He is a pawn in the effort of the shadow group and is left for dead in enemy territory but fights his way out and is determined to get to the bottom of what is happening. A good read that I recommend to anyone who loves military and political thrillers.

Top-Notch Thriller

This is the second in a series featuring sniper Vic Harwood but the first I have read.

This novel sizzles from the opening pages. President Bob Smart has invited his cabinet members and their families to Camp David. The limos conveying their family members are blown up in a series of explosions coupled with sniper fire. Blood everywhere. Vic Harwood receives a message from his friend via Facebook showing him with a gun to his chin with the massacre playing out on the screen.

Evidence found implicates Sammie as one of the snipers. And other material points to the attack being orchestrated by terrorists based in the Middle East. Vic is recruited as a member of Team Valid, along with two other snipers and Valerie Hinojosa, Sammie's sister, who has a high level position in the intelligence hierarchy. The team travels to Crimea, Iran and Azerbaijan before realizing something is seriously amiss. Vic has been abandoned in Iran by the other two snipers and later realizes this was not accidental. He makes his way to Azerbaijan where he reconnects with Valerie and they make their way back to the US.

In parallel we learn that a plot is afoot to take down President Smart, involving former Presidential candidate Senator Brook Logan and her cohort of hackers and schemers.

This is fast-paced, no holds barred , political/terrorist thriller. Greatly enjoyed it.

My copy of this novel was provided by the publisher via NetGalley.

Nicholas Irving and Anthony Tata’s Reaper: Threat Zero provides non-stop excitement. Vick Hardwood, the protagonist, confronts what seems to be an impossible array of killers. You will enjoy the book especially if you know the characters and events dominating domestic headlines 2017-2019. Having read all of Tata’s novels and Irving’s first Reaper influenced my decision to read Threat Zero because both authors are excellent writers and know their subject material.

The story is very complicated because the truth is at times very hard to find. Vick Harwood is an accomplished Sniper who is at the top of the game in regards to Military Snipers. But when his former spotter is implicated in an ambush that kills many members of the families of the Presidents Cabinet Members Harwood is pressed to action to try and clear his friends name.

Team Valid is put together by the President to go after those responsible for the ambush. Harwood is on board with that and committed to do his best to bring to justice those responsible. His loyalty to his friend is pushing him as well as his patriotism to his country. He will succeed at all costs. With two other team members he sets out to right the scales.

But as things progress the scales start to tip to a direction that Harwood can’t understand. He is pushed to his physical as well as mental limits as things unfold. He must face what appears to be a conspiracy that maybe will unravel the events that set him on this course. He must discover the truth. He also must discover who to trust.

I don’t want to give away spoilers, so I will stop here.

The story is well conceived, well written, well researched. The mystery and drama is superb. For a Military Political Action Thriller you will not be disappointed.

This was somewhat better than the first book in the series but not much. The story was not very new and the characters ok. It actually came with a small surprising twist in the end.

This book starts off with a bang and never lets up!

Reaper: Threat Zero is the second book in the Vick Harwood series and it is just as good as the first. I would highly recommend reading this book.

If you haven't read Nicholas Irving's other books, or AJ Tata's, I would recommend those as well. Very good authors in both Fiction and Non-Fiction.

Thank you to St Martin's Press and Net Galley for providing an ARC in return for an honest review.

First off, this isn't my usual genre. My 13-yo son heard about this book from a friend, and he ended up buying it for me as a Father's Day gift.

This was a quick and easy read, that had decent pacing. Pretty much an action political thriller set in the current day with obvious parallels to the current administration. President Smart (no, really) is the successor to Obama, who canceled the Iran nuclear deal, creating the intrigue that fuels the plot.

There's a minor plot twist at the end which actually surprised me.

Overall, I liked this book.

Thrilling, fast paced action! There is no time to catch your breath as the story moves from one scene to the next. Figuring out who the bad guys are is almost impossible until the very end. The one person you are sure of is the hero, Reaper. The tactical information is very good and also super scary knowing that it is totally possible. Totally loved it!

Ranger Never Quit

A very interesting plot seemingly taken from cast of Washington DC political characters and international threats. If you enjoy fast paced, hard hitting action then I highly recommend the Reaper series. A great story and I am looking forward to the next book in this series.

Irving is good. Obviously understands military tech and how its used so the scenarios, while "out-there" dramatic are plausible. In the same vein, his plot is not only timely but provides some possibilities about the motives that might be driving current events. A worthwhile read.

In the second of the thrill-packed “Reaper” novels, “Reaper Threat Zero” Vic Harwood’s friend and former spotter Sammie Samuelson is the lead suspect in the ambush and murder of a convoy of family members of President Bob Smart’s cabinet who are headed to Camp David for "Family Day". When he confesses and then commits suicide, Vic is highly suspicious that he’s been framed especially after his own house is broken into.

Sending his fifteen year-old adopted ward into the care of Command Sergeant Major Murdoch’s parents Vic “Reaper” Harwood joins Special Agent Valerie Hinojosa, a navy sniper and a Marine Force recon sniper (“ Team Valid") to hunt down the family members of the terrorists who ambushed the convoy. What he doesn’t expect is to be betrayed on the mission and to uncover a fiendish homeland plot to depose the President.

Set between the U.S., Crimea, Iran, and Azerbaijan the action never stops as Vic Harwood and Team Valid pursue a mission of vengeance only to uncover a scheme to have him captured or killed. As he and Agent Hinojosa struggle to survive and return to the U.S. the intensity and suspense further escalates as a parallel plot unfolds involving Senator Sloan Brookes and her partners to take down President Smart. As the threads of both plots begin to weave together this exciting page-turner flows quickly and smoothly to an electrifying twist at the end.

Infusing life into this intriguing roller-coaster ride are compelling characters like capable and resourceful Vic “Reaper Harwood, the renowned Army sniper with an unprecedented kill record; his blunt, and smart charge Monisha; the enigmatic Special Agent Valerie Hinojosa; and the cold, calculating Sloan Brookes. These like the rest of the cast fuel this story with excitement, passion and high-energy.

Well-written and realistic like all of the “Reaper”novels, “Reaper Threat Zero” is a thrilling political and military action mix that should not be missed and I can’t wait to read the next in this enthralling series.

Book Review – Author Nick Irving’s second installment “Threat Zero” was a stronger book than Irving’s first addition, “Ghost Target” despite contributor A.J. Tata’s right-wing political rhetoric. A motorcade carrying several family members of the President’s cabinet to Camp David for “Family Day” is ambushed, killing and wounding wives, husbands, children, and Secret Service agents and is deemed a terrorist attract. Immediately in the aftermath, protagonist Vick Harwood watches a Facebook live feed of his former Army Ranger spotter, Sammie Samuelson’s apparent suicide and confession in his apartment, just one mile from Camp David. Remnants of a firefight are in the background - a sniper rifle, rocket launchers, and ammunition. Harwood investigates his buddy’s supposable suicide, and with the help of an attractive FBI agent Valerie Hinojosa, traces evidence left by Samuelson to a devilish plot involving international terrorists and domestic political opponents. Meanwhile, the president wants retribution, and will stop at nothing to get it. Harwood joins a Black Ops team whose mission is to kill the family members of terrorists and eliminate the terrorists as well. The Black Ops team consisting of Hinojosa, Harwood, a Navy SEAL sniper, and a Marine Force Recon sniper, travels to Crimea, Iran, and Azerbaijan - a country located at the boundary of Eastern Europe and Western Asia before realizing the mission is not what it seems. Harwood struggles to balance his orders with his sense of right and wrong - without losing his life in the process. The storyline is a race to uncover the sinister plot in the homeland and to clear his former Army buddy’s name. Add in some underhanded politicians, violent gang members and a female lead bad guy and what you have is an action-packed nonstop conspiracy that keeps you on the edge of your seat from beginning to end. Although the plotline was somewhat predictable, the story was well written, exciting, and compelling to read. Tata’s contribution of ‘political oratory’ was my only negative to this book. Despite that, Threat Zero was a good read.

An insanely intense story that starts off with a bang!, literally. A convoy of vehicles transporting family members of the sitting Presidential Cabinet is attacked, and no one is left alive. Reaper is brought in to help investigate the apparent suicide of his friend and spotter who has ben framed as the assassin involved in the attack. Following threads provided to him by the FBI and others in the government, Reaper and a small team globe trot seemingly trying to unravel the truth.

The duo of Irving and Tata continue to have a mega-hit series with Reaper. The character is sufficiently bad-assed to survive in the Thriller genre, has personal flaws, and maintains his deeply rooted convictions, even when they cause him to question orders.

If you missed reading Ghost Target, the first in the Reaper series, you can read this book and be sufficiently "in the know" and definitely entertained. My suggestion though would be to read Ghost Target first because it too is an excellent book.

Thanks to the authors as well as St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for a copy of the book in exchange for my thoughts and opinions. 9.5 of 10 stars This will stand as one of the top Thrillers of 2019.

My first experience with this set of authors, Irving/Tata, both former military in real life. Written well and grabs your attention right out of the gate. The opening scene is bloody and not for the faint-of-heart. In fact, the rest of this novel is violent for the most part, all the way to the end.

The assiduously presented tactical strategies are believably presented, but to a layman may be over your head. My hubby immensely enjoyed this and would rate it 5 stars. For me, a military-naive female, I had to skim over some of the technical tactics but found the major plot line engrossing, yet disturbing. The President of the US is depicted much like our current real President what with his tweeting tactics and overbearing personality. The left-wingers are hateful and manipulative, maybe that's close to real life too... one doesn't know who to trust, and there are a couple of surprises I didn't see coming.

For the most part I found it a real page-turner and we've already ordered book 1, The Ghost Target. This is book 2 by this pair of authors. Read the description of the authors backgrounds. They are quite experienced in real life with critical situations such as they write about.

My thanks to Amazon's Vine Program for the ARC and the chance to voice my opinion.

My paperback copy of this book is 357 pages long...at least 100 pages too long. I enjoy reading books like this but I really don’t need to know the descriptions of the weaponry down to the bar code, or the detailed description of a weapon every time it’s stripped or assembled/dissembled. And which one of the authors is the fashionista?
