This is a great anthology! A wonderful and unique way to get to know some new authors. The stories are very compelling, each in its own particular way. Plot twists abound, and the research behind the story is refreshingly realistic. Characters’ lives draw you in, with the total moral and ethical issues, the emotional upheavals, stresses you to the limit! It’s a fantastic series starter stories! I’m going to continue with most of the series, they completely hooked me! You should grab it, honestly, if you like dystopian post apocalyptic genre.
I am voluntarily leaving a review with no obligation of an advance copy I received from the author.

I will update as I read more books...

Firstly, it's nice to see Rice, Werbeloff and Lawrence sticking together after their earlier excellent 2047 release.
https://www.amazon.com/2054-JT-Lawren...

The Bottle Stopper - Angeline Trevena
[This was my original review of the book.]
This is the first work I have read by this author, and I am impressed. This dark, dystopian tale introduces us to the characters who will be in the trilogy.

This is mostly Maeve's story, and it's not a pretty one. Maeve lives with her uncle who abuses her violently on a daily basis. There are lots of questions raised whilst you are reading, such as 'where are her parents?' and 'why on earth was she left with such a man?'. I don't want to say anything else or I will spoil the story, but do not underestimate Maeve or indeed any of the other characters.

There are quite a few characters in this first outing, but they all have their place, and we will, no doubt, hear all of their stories in time. Loved this!
[I have since read almost everything by this author.]

Hedon - Jason Werbeloff
Bhutan - where everyone balances their lives between giving others happiness and receiving it yourself. This is counted on hedometer implants. If the figures are down or up, the Tax Man cometh.

Babies are only allowed to be conceived at certain times with the say-so of the head honchos. However, those that (disgustingly) can pump out kids with no problems (the Breeders) are in a ghetto out of the way. Free of hedometers, but living in poverty with a Culling hanging over their heads.

I loved the use of Buddhist references, and that those in charge interpreted Buddha's wisdom in such an unusual way. Sort of a reversed sexist buddhism. Also loved that the author's Experience Machine came up in this book. A very pleasant surprise.

Werbeloff is such a unique and talented author that there is no chance you could guess what happens inside these pages. Nor how you'll feel about the content - satirical or emotional. Wonderfully original, and equally horrific. Loved it!
[I have read everything by this author, and he never ceases to amaze me.]

FEED 1 - Nicole Grotepas
Do you watch Big Brother? Are you addicted to it? How would you feel if this was real life and all around you? If your life was aired to everyone - accompanied by the appropriate music, of course, as a drama. Feed addicts glued to their screens, whilst their own lives - social and emotional - fall apart.

This is kind of slow in parts, but it's a tense build-up and a scarily accurate picture of the way our society could be headed. This is the first piece of work I have read by this author, and I will be carrying on this series.

The Given - Colby R Rice
I was a wee bit confused at the start of this book as there seemed to be an awful lot of characters. For someone with memory problems, like I have, this is a huge negative. However, I persevered and I'm glad I did as this turned into a really good dystopian tale.

A story of the strength of family ties - wanted and unwanted - and how to keep your talents under wraps while trying to make life fun for your wee sister.

I was given an eARC of 'Uprising' which I voluntarily read and honestly reviewed. All opinions are my own.

Jacq of Spades is the only book in this collection I've read:

A futuristic steampunk city, somewhere in what used to be America, ruled by four Families named after the card suits. The protagonist is married into one of these families - an arranged marriage - but has a sideline as a private investigator, unknown to her husband at least.

An intriguing plot which is essentially resolved - but enough threads are left dangling for at least one sequel.

I was given a copy of this anthology by one of the authors - JT Lawrence - in exchange for a review. Because of time constraints, I have not read each of the twelve books therein, but I have some favourites including The Sigma Surrogate, Hedon, The Bottle Stopper, Cheatc0de and The Legacy, and Feed 1.

The Sigma Surrogate, book one of JT Lawrence's When Tomorrow Calls series, is the perfect opener for this anthology. Well-paced and edgy, Sigma has twists and turns to leave you breathless. The main character, Keke, is engaging, intelligent, sexy, real. I highly recommend this.

Jason Werbeloff's Hedon takes an inventively original plunge into a speculative, dystopian future wherein some things that are deemed as 'normal' by society's standards are flipped on their heads, while human virtues (and vices) are placed under a microscope in a very real, scary sense. Control is the key word. Freedom is virtually non-existent. Conformity is essential. An excellent book, and one of my favourites.

The Bottle Stopper by Angeline Travena, book one in The Paper Duchess series, is a gritty take on what someone can be capable of when pushed too far. In Maeve's case, the pusher is her abusive, drunken uncle who engages his niece in his illicit business as she fills and stoppers bottles in his apothecary store. The cruelty and wretchedness of humanity is counterbalanced by glimpses of kindness, compassion, and even love, in a dystopian society that has become so degraded. I really enjoyed this book and look forward to reading the series.

Michael Campton's Cheatc0de, while centred primarily on the VR world of computer games, nonetheless appeals to me (a non-gamer) on a whole other level with the arc of a father and son's relationship that permeates the story throughout. It's a story that stays with me still, long after I finished reading it. An excellent, insightful, well-written book.

Melissa Delport's The Legacy, first book in its series, draws us into a post-apocalyptic New United States of America with a realism that's believable in our time when nuclear threats seem very, very real. With its strong female lead, this book has as much to do with human nature as it has to do with superhuman abilities. This is a thrilling, fast-paced read that doesn't stop unfolding until the conclusion. Very enjoyable.

Feed 1 by Nicole Grotepas feels particularly relevant in this age of social media domination, where live feeds are slipping into our timelines more and more often. Reality TV..except it's real, just as addictive, and - for some - deadly dangerous. Like any good dystopian story, Feed 1 is deliberately thought-provoking, insightful, believable and, yes, its scary. Great read!

Hedon by Jason Werbeloff
This is an amazing example of dystopian fiction. Werbeloff sets his story in a world post war. After the fall of a society we would recognize, the new controlling body claims to base their government on the teaching of Buddhism. But in true dystopian style Werbeloff manages to turn something that should be peaceful into misery. Happiness is enforced, altruism is commanded and those with too few of either can be put to death as a danger to the rest of the population. With a feeling similar to Animal Farm, food and needs are in short supply for every except those at the top. Procreation is only allowed by the government and all other male/female relations are considered abnormal.
This is a horrifically memorizing story. Each character seems trapped in their own life until Werbeloff weaves them together to a final explosive finish.

Only had the opportunity to read Once More Into Darkness so far but can't wait to read more.

Another amazing book by the talented D. Michael Withrow! This is a dystopian futuristic novel packed with action and a touch of romance. Wonderful first book to this new trilogy.

In this book we meet Merrick, a bounty hunter who travels into the radioactive world outside of the bubble to capture the worst of the worst for the council. Merrick is the best there is at his job... until the woman he likes is next on his bounty list making him question everything he once believed.

I have read 'The Sigma Surrogate' so far in the Uprising set. It is a quick paced story, short and sweet with an interesting cast of characters. I certainly want to read the next book in the series as this one just wets the appetite.

This collection of twelve (12), yes twelve dystopian novels is absolutely mind-blowing. I have quite a diverse list of "favorite" authors and it is amazingly awesome that four (4) of them have a story included within these pages. Which, of course, shows that I have excellent taste in my adored wordsmiths 🙄. I loved each and every one of them and highly recommend it, which, in my experience is rare that I feel that way about all of them. To be perfectly honest I have to admit that I had already read five (5) of these novels. Please do not think that I am suggesting that one of these is below my standards. The one author is not yet on my "fav" list mainly because I have only read this one story, so far. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. So, stop wasting your valuable reading time with my review and go get this huge bundle of entertainment. Oh, you might want to plan on less sleep for a few days.

An awesome set of twelve first of series novels by twelve great unique writers. You definitely want to treat yourself to this collection. Your new favorite writer may be waiting to be discovered between the pages! Below are in depth reviews of just four of the incredible books included.

The Sigma Surrogate by J. T. Lawrence

My first introduction to J. T Lawrence, but I will definitely be looking for the next one in this series! I loved the unique voice given to the characters and the strong female lead. There was great world building and disrcriptive flow.

When a SurroSister is injured by a poison (exploding) Easter egg, freelance reporter, Keke, is tipped off to the story. Being a SurroSister is a coveted and respected position. No one should want to harm them with the critical infertility problems. Besides that the Cloister where they live, are educated and cared for is supposed to be impenetrable. How was it ever breached?

Once Keke actually sees the young, pregnant sister lying in her hospital bed, burned, forever scarred, she knows this is one story she can’t let go. Even after being threatened by Mother Blake that it is a story she can never print, Keke keeps investigating.

If the Cloister is really impossible to get into, was this an inside job? Who inside or out would want to harm the pregnant young woman? How will Keke find out if she can’t gain access herself? Where will this investigation lead and what dark secrets will it uncover?

The Given By Colby Rice

Strong, driven plotline in a magical dystopian world. The multiple characters are full fleshed, dialogue true and emotions relatable. Great writing!

The world is becoming more dangerous each day with violence escalating between the rebel Koa and the Alchemic Order, the seat of power. Too many Civilian children leave school for work just to help feed their families, and still often go hungry.

Zeika at sixteen doesn’t regret her work for the last few years as a waitress. It angers her that the Alchemic Order shut down the family forge, they are no longer allowed to make guns. Only those in the Order can legally be armed, buy, sell or make arms. Even though those guns are inferior to the ones her family made. Now her father is forced to work in a different Demesne, coming home seldom.

With her mother working too, and her mother’s other problems, raising her younger sister Manja was left mostly up to Zeika. When she was working Manja went to daycare in the 5th Demesne where they lived. The rest of the time they were together. It was safer that way.

When Koa start attacking Civilians in the protected Demesnes, and then Zeika loses her job and is also suspected by the Alchemic Police, her life is turned upside down. Everywhere Zeika turns are enemies. Will she be able to keep Manja safe? Will they find their father? Will help be found on any front? Is there any hope?

Cheatcode by Michael Campling

If you aren’t already reading Michael Campling, you have been missing out. He is an exceptional writer in multiple genres! He draws you in to whatever world he builds with well written descriptions that have you living in his worlds with his characters, and characters so real they could be next door. Turn the page, enter Michael’s world and the game.

Hank goes home on his last ever day of High School to his dilapidated house in his decaying neighborhood. Hank lives there with just his father, Mervin, on the disability he receives from the military. His father doesn’t leave the house, relying on him for too many things, since his mom left.

Hank does have a refuge. His time spent in his game chair. Today is special. He is almost where he’s been trying to get for a long time. He has nearly reached the place someone inserted a cheatcode into the game. If he’s lucky he will get there today. If he doesn’t die first!

The Legacy by Melissa Delport

A thrilling post-apocalyptic political intrigue! Character driven story that pulls you in quickly and keeps you invested. Very well written.

America has fallen. In the post-apocalyptic world since a New United States has risen including only ten of the northern states. One man, Eric Dane, has appointed himself as the President of this new Union. Rights of the people have been severely limited, with curfews, mandatory sterilization, and other extreme laws.

But there is a rebellion brewing in the excluded states, with many rebels living within the new union. Some even holding positions in the new regime. One of the highest rebel positions, the one in the most danger if discovered, is the president’s wife, Rebecca. They have been married for three years. She provides invaluable intelligence to the rebels, but how long can her luck hold out?

I was gifted a copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

I was given the Kindle Boxset for reviewing purposes, and will review as I go.

I started with The Given, and whilst I was a little confused with some terminology and the world it was set it, I still loved the book. The courage Zeika shows in this scary world, and the love for her sister, is great. I liked her father, and wished there was more about him, her mother on the other hand, not so much, she was weak, and not an overly nice woman, but I suppose given their circumstances, not surprising. I look forward to reading the next in the series.

30th August to 2nd September - The Legacy by Melissa Delport

What a book! 5*
To leave behind everything she loves and knows to embark on a cause that could ultimately end her, makes Rebecca one true heroine. She's a truly likeable character, with her self assured, arrogant, sarcastic but drop dead gorgeous sidekick, who is the complete opposite of Aidan, the equally as gorgeous soul mate! I raced through this book, but didn't want it to end!"

3rd September - The Girl in The City by Philip Harris

Another brilliant read! Well written and gripping.
15 year old Leah lives in a world run by the Transport, and they control everything, a world where she scavenges for things to make money to get by. On one of her scavenges she witnesses an awful scene and is given a bag with something valuable in, something that leads trouble to her and her father, and ultimately ends her life as she knew it.

3rd September - The Watcher by A.J Eversley

I must admit this is my favourite! I read it in one day, I would have read it quicker, but I had to charge my Kindle!

This story follows Sawyer, a Watcher, who fight Bots and Carbons, with a few select other Watchers. Whilst fighting the aforementioned, they learn that the Carbons have evolved, and pose an even bigger threat to the remaining humans. When Sawyer and her group rescue another group of humans in an abandoned warehouse, she meets Kenzie, someone, although she doesn't trust him, finds herself falling for, and as she has to deal with these new emotions, the Watchers lives are put into even more danger, and everything they know changes. A story of survival, friendship, sacrifice, love and betrayal, with an unexpected ending!

I read The Sigma Surroagte in March 2018, and here is my review from then.

Another 5 star read from JT Lawrence!
The story is from Keke's perspective and set just before the When Tomorrow Calls trilogy, in the near, but perilous future. Keke is definitely one smart, sassy, sexy, ready for action woman, who, it seems, won't be put off from telling her story, especially this one, the one where the SurroSisters, the fertile girls recruited to have babies as the population is dwindling, are being targeted. We learn how Keke meets Marko, and who FlowerGirl is to her too. A must, must read!

What a huge undertaking this must have been! Each author provided a unique look at a future less than friendly. There were some that were brilliant, some not so much and a couple that left me uninterested. Like any anthology, really. Be aware, the stories are novels, not short stories. My favourites were The Jacq Of Spades by Patricia Loofbourrow and Feed 1 by Nicole Grotepas. Two very different stories but both superbly written. It took a while but I read every single one.

The Jacq Of Spade is a neo noir steam punk tale according to the author, who would know. Set in the future, it shows a world ruled by crime families who have no problem with torture, slavery and murder. I can’t see a HEA fitting in here but the story was strong, fast paced, chock full of action and kept me reading until the wee hours. And I bought the next couple of books in the series to go on with.

Feed 1 is resonates strongly for anyone who can see the disadvantages of constant watch by cameras. This story is so very much more, of course. There are some twists I didn’t see coming, some I did, and overall it’s a fine examination of human nature. There’s some violence and the characters are the sort that stands out on the page. This story ended at a great place, not a HEA there either but good nonetheless. It’s another that I will follow.

This is a fabulous collection of dystopian thrillers that are sure to please. All of these authors are amazing in their own right, but each tell their tale in a distinct way that will leave you wanting to delve more into their individual collections once you finish this one. My favorite of all was Sigma Surrogate by J.T. Lawrence! I devoured this book in one sitting. Not only does it suck you in almost immediately but it grips on and hold tightly until the very end! This is actually the lead in book to a fabulous trilogy which consists of Why You Were Taken, How We Found You, and What Have We Done. This book has everything a reader would hope for: thrills, deceit, mystery, drama, and heat/tension perfectly placed within the story while giving you the back story of the characters in the stories. Keke, a journalist, the main character, instantly makes you love her. Although there is no need to read this book prior to the other books expertly written by JT Lawrence, if you haven't read the others, get them all and start here! This book moves you into the When Tomorrow Calls trilogy, with seamless effort. What are you waiting for? Go get this and the others NOW. Nothing this author pens is disappointing! Another one of the author/artists is Jason Werbeloff who also gives you a wonderfully thrilling story in Heden. Instead of reading more of this, go buy this anthology and read all of the wonderful books without having to search for your next read once you finish a book. There are 12 gripping tales here that won't steer you wrong!

What an amazing collection! I was not sure what I was getting into with this collection and I don't tend to like to get sucked in to series but this was truly impressive. Of the twelve authors it was hard to pick a favourite.
Angeline Trevena left me so confused in bottle stopper because I felt I should hate her lead female but yet could not help by feel for her. I definitely want to see what happens next to Maeve.
Feed one was terrifying in the fact that it could really be a look at our future.
All of the stories pulled you in and grabbed ahold of your curiosity. The lead characters had such a touch of realism that you could not help but be drawn to their stories. While some like Cheatcode tended to be more fantasy others like feed1 were a scary glimpse into where the future could lead.
The collection is a great way to sample the writing styles of several authors and find a dystopian future that pulls you in. Me? I want them all!

Once More into Darkness is the only book from this anthology that I have read, as yet, but if this 5 star read is anything to go by then I am in for a treat... Once More into Darkness is a wonderfully imagined dark, gritty dystopian world where danger lurks at every street corner.. Merrik is a successful bounty hunter working for the ruling council...gradually his allegiance is tested as slowly but surely evidence of corruption and even murder comes to light...

The narrative describes Merrik’s journey as he is forced to face a new reality and when someone he cares about, becomes a pawn in the deadly game played by the men of power he is forced to take sides ...I really loved Merrik’s character he is courageous and fiercely loyal to those he calls friends... the secondary characters also provided layers of light and dark I really thought the relationship between Merrick and Riley felt genuine and a special mention here for Bishop another unsung hero...

A fast paced and gripping story with the kind of ending that leaves the reader satisfied for now but which promises so much more in the future as the series progresses...

I had read several of the authors in this great new anthology before so I knew I was in for a treat... and I wasn't disappointed. There's so much in this one it will keep you occupied for days - maybe weeks if you're an average reader. It's got more than 2000 pages of great stories. Rice takes you into the home and the lives of a civilian family in the middle of a civil war. Lawrence offers up a new story set in the near future South Africa of her When Tomorrow Calls universe. Set at the approximate time of the first book of that series, this one tells the story of KeKe's investigation of the attempted murder of a young Surrogate Sister.
Both stories are full of action, suspense, intrigue and unexpected allies.
And I'll leave you to discover the rest of the stories for yourself. If you're a fan of dark, near future SF, I think you'll love this great new series as much as I did.

12 authors, 12 different dystopian views of the future! I can only imagine how hard the authors worked to pull this off!

Admittedly, I'm still reading the stories, but I wanted to stop in and leave my review. There are some really talented writers here and their stories are well written with, for the most part, well developed characters and plot lines. And in this ever changing world, it's actually become scarily easy to see one or more of these kinds of scenarios actually coming to pass.

As always, I loved Colby R. Rice's story, The Given. It had a few challenges for me, but all in all, a really well written piece. The kind that inspires me to read more of her work in the future.

Well done to all the writers!

I voluntarily reviewed this book in exchange for an advance copy from the publishers.

The Jacq of Spades by Patricia Loofbourrow
The book is in first person (Jacqueline Spadros) who is the main character in this series. I thought it would be an easy going book with no big surprises, but IT WAS NOT!!
Jacqui is a brilliant woman, she wants to live fully in the world where men are ruling everything. She tries to deal with other people, to find her place and make everything well.
Each character has its own role and a way of behaving (like Roy or Tony), that made this book full, it has depth :)
The detective thing inside made book at a good pace, the action moved smoothly and wisely.
I recommend this book to people who like reading in the first person, detective thing, women who can live/find her way in a world dominated by men.

WHOA BABY!!!
Talk about one intense collection filled to the brim with non-stop action. This baby rocks with all the hard hitting, nailbiting, spine tingling, nerve racking, page turning thrills that lead you face-to-face with all the heavy emotions that pour from the pages. Twists and turns abound with all the suspense, danger and betrayal that keeps the tension high and enemies higher. You cannot resist this bad boy that plays havoc with lies, deceit and drama. With amazing authors and believable plots you won't be able to put this little treasure down. Thanks guys for pulling these gems together for our enjoyment.

This is for "Once More Into Darkness", that is the only story I have read so far:

Once More Into Darkness is a wonderful start to a saga that can only continue on to further greatness. You are introduced to Merrick, a lone bounty hunter, who is about to learn there is a lot more to this future world, that he is a part of, than he realized. The story had a great pace that keeps you reading, needing to know what is next for Merrick, and those he encounters. I am excited for the next book in this series, to see what is awaiting in The Solar Apocalypse Saga.

Once More Into Darkness is the only book in the anthology that I've read so far. The book is very well written and draws you completely in. It revolves around Merrik, a bounty hunter, who is part of something that is much bigger than he can even imagine. He has many difficulties but pulls thru with the help of his friends. This is a must read book!!

I have only read Once More Into Darkness, but if it sets the tone for the rest, I can't wait!!

This novel pulls you in from the very first line. D. Michael Withrow has an amazing way of writing that brings the world to life around the reader. Even though it is a dystopian world, it never felt like it; instead, it felt as if the world was happening right then.

And it's not only the world that he breathes life into. The characters are written beautifully, and goodness there are times I wished they were real so that I could give them my thoughts! When an author can evoke that kind of reaction from me, it is a plus.

This is a review of the Jacq of Spades which is included in this book collection.

The Jacq of Spades is an intricately crafted noir steampunk mystery that starts a complicated and interesting series of books. These are the kind of books that you really need to pay attention to the details when you are reading them or you may miss something important. Become immersed in a new world of gangsters and criminals that is a little different from anything you've ever read before.

I absolutely loved this book. It has everything from J. T. Lawrence's surrogate story and Colby R. Rice's story about what is basically a revolution to mob life in the 1800's and computer hackers/cheaters. This book has something for everyone and I recommend it to anyone who loves a good Sci-Fi read.

12 different takes on a dystopian future, some were amazing, some not so amazing but each were a treat to read! All were well written novels and each had a variety of action, violence, twists and turns and tragedy. If you like dystopian stories then this is the collection for you, a great read!
