Off The Rails

Rate this book
Fifteen year old Rachel Stark is cute, popular and a chronic runaway. She lurks around the mall during the day, and parties all night. School is optional. Pleasing her friends is not. She’s a self-taught master of manipulation and is pretty sure her mom would never actually change the locks.

Overnight, her world changes. One party. One boy. One or ten too many drinks. The mall is quickly becoming a dangerous place to be. To top it off, her mom has finally had enough.

Perfectly timed, Rachel is presented with an offer to follow a friend to LA. It sounds like absolute insanity at first but, as her options dwindle, she reconsiders. It’ll be an adventure and, besides, running away is her specialty.

After five days and over a thousand kilometres travelled, she’s exhausted and physically broken. Can she find the courage and the strength to end her nightmare?

About the author

I have always loved books. As a young girl, I devoured anything by Judy Blume and Beverly Cleary. I still have my copies of Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret and Otherwise Known As Shiela The Great found under my Christmas tree when I was 11. I think I still have a few copies of the Sweet Valley High series kicking around somewhere along with my Bobbsey Twins and Nancy Drew books. In sixth grade, we studied The Cay by Theodore Taylor. In eighth grade, we studied The Outsiders. It was then I decided I would be a writer someday. I needed to take readers to the places these incredible writers took me every time I flipped through their pages.

I wrote many short stories and poetry throughout junior high and high school. Unfortunately, the majority of those works found their way into a trash can somewhere. In time, life happened and my writing took a back seat to family and career.

In 2009, I began writing Off The Rails, based on a true story. I poured nearly ten years of blood, sweat and tears into the novel before finally publishing it in August 2018. It is one of my proudest accomplishments.

After a 20+ year legal career, I “retired” in 2015 to finish my novel and try something a little bit different. Today, you can find me in a giant white Freightliner somewhere on a highway in Canada or the US. When I’m not driving or writing, I’ll typically have my nose buried in a book, my camera out, or Grey’s Anatomy on Netflix. I am not afraid to admit, I’m mildly addicted to the Yahtzee app on my phone.

I’m currently working on the Cedar Creek series, the first of which is scheduled to release in January 2020. This will be a contemporary romance series featuring the lives and loves of the residents of Cedar Creek, British Columbia, a sleepy lakeside town nestled on the shores of the Shuswap.

My husband and I have four adult children, four grandchildren plus one angel, and a fur-baby called Bear.

We make our home base in Calgary, Alberta and dream of retiring to write full time from my studio overlooking the beautiful Shuswap Lake in British Columbia.

I felt alot of connection to this book as it took place in my home town and many cities I have traveled. However thats where the connection ended as this poor girl went through hell for absolutely nothing. The ending left me feeling lost and like the story is incomplete. It had alot of potential to be an amazing story if only one of the lingering questions got answered I would have rated it much higher.
