This book contains The Bender Tragedy, and is a reprint from JUNE 8, 1875. It is written by Mary E. York, and is a descriptive firsthand account of the murder of her husband, by the Benders of Cherryvale. It surmises the Bloody Benders tragedy where so many people were murdered. Both the Longcor and York murder victims were neighbors of famous author Laura Ingalls Wilder when she lived in Kansas. The Longcors lived half a mile from Laura Ingalls Wilder, and are now buried on the Little House on the Prairie Museum property since 1873. It also contains two articles about the Bloody Bender saga. The first article is from the 1910 Celebrated Criminal Cases of America, and the second article is from the 1893 History of Labette County. There are many pictures of the scene and relative artifacts surrounding the Bender murders.
I personally loved this book. I visited the Mission Road last summer on vacation, which is where I received this book as a recommendation from the Laura Ingalls Wilder home. This book is a great read if you love history, mystery and horror. I recommend to anyone willing to read with a higher vocabulary!
My great uncle was Dr York so I was excited to read this book written by a relative to see if it coincides with family history! I have grown up with articles, read The Bloody Benders by Adleman! Thankful to have found a copy...look forward to giving it to my mom next!
What a creepy little piece of Kansas history! I was visiting this area and learned about the Benders, so had to read this account. Such horror was inflicted upon the victims. An interesting read of a terrible tragedy.
It was fascinating to read the actual account of a widow whose husband fell victim to the Bender family. It offers a more personal intimate perspective of this horrific tragedy that plagued the early days of Kansas.
