The Doctor Chronicles #11.1

Doctor Who: The Eleventh Doctor Chronicles, Volume 1

Rate this book
Four stories set in the Eleventh Doctor era, narrated by Jacob Dudman.

1.1 The Calendar Man by AK Benedict

Answering a cry for help, the Doctor and Amy arrive on a misty colony world – but nobody thinks anything is wrong. Nobody, except for one young woman, hiding in shadows and scribbling in her notebook.

Soon, Amy is on the trail of missing colonists, while the Doctor strides into the fog in search of a fairy-tale.

But time is running out, and the Calendar Man is flicking through the pages of their lives…

1.2 The Top of the Tree by Simon Guerrier

On one of their annual jaunts, young Kazran Sardick and the Doctor find themselves in trouble when the TARDIS is tangled in the branches of a very strange, very large tree.

They emerge into a habitat where myriad species fight for survival: an ecosystem of deadly flora and fauna, along with a tribe of primitive humans.

This is a mystery which can only be solved by climbing. But what will they find at the top of the tree?

1.3 The Light Keepers by Roy Gill

Dorium Maldovar has a problem. The self-styled ‘Beacon People’ are bad for business, and now they’re in his shuttle park, digging for mysterious minerals.

When the Doctor crashes into his life once again, Dorium enlists him to find out what these scavengers are really up to inside their lighthouse.

But a lighthouse signals danger – and this beacon was placed to warn of something more ancient and powerful than anyone knows. Something that is returning…

1.4 False Coronets by Alice Cavender

On the trail of a temporal anomaly, the Doctor and Clara arrive in a London dungeon, where an unlikely prisoner awaits her execution. This is a 19th Century England where the King has been dethroned, and Republicans bearing false coronets hold sway.

While the Doctor seeks out the source of alien interference in the timelines, Clara recruits some local help – and gets invited to a party.

History has gone awry, and Jane Austen must help rewrite it.

These four stories take place at various points during the Eleventh Doctor's era. Jacob Dudman not only does an amazing impression of Matt Smith but has an amazing talent in audio book narration. He keeps the story moving with great pace and inflection. The inclusion of a second actor (akin to Big Finish's companion chronicles) is a great addition to the audio book format as it means conversations can happen really naturally. It, like me, you love Matt Smiths Doctor then you'll love these. :D

Jacob Dudman is a fantastic narrator and excellent voice for the 11th Doctor in place of Matt Smith. I also liked how each story had a different companion, including the highlight of Kazran from the Christmas episode! Some of the stories did seem to wrap up very quickly at the end, so to that effect I am giving this four stars.

I'm still processing how I feel about this. First off, I like it the voice actor sounds like Matt Smith, kudos there. I like it when they get people that sound like the Doctor..BUT..does he also have to do the voice for Amy?!? That kills it when they do voice actors for everyone else BUT the companions. Seriously? You can't find another female to do the voice of Amy or whomever else the companion is? Then there was no Rory. Why!?!? It just felt too odd to have all these other companions and then no Rory. The stories too were just..I don't know. It just seemed weird.

The Calendar Man - 4/5 ⭐

The Top of the Tree - 3.5/5 ⭐

The Light Keepers - 3/5 ⭐

A varied collection of stories from across the Eleventh Doctor era. Jacob Dudman gives a very impressive Matt Smith impression, though a the cost of the performance itself.

I was a bit surprised by the format of this set, as I wasn't used to the hybrid audiobook/audio drama combo. Dudman makes for a great narrator, and largely does a good job at voicing the additional characters. I have to say his Karen Gillan and Jenna-Louise Coleman impersonations are very lacking.

I think the first story is the weakest, largely due to the laughably bad villain. How many time-lord fairy tales have there been now that turn out to be both real and easily beaten?

The second story had a very unique setting of a giant tree. I really liked Kazran's relationship to the Doctor. Reminds me a lot of Turlough.

The third story is probably my favourite. The late Simon Fisher-Becker is a very welcome returning voice actor. He has a great screen presence (sans screen) and the story itself is quite fun.

The final story finally tells the tale of how Clara started her romantic entanglement with Jane Austen. It's a very fun period piece, let down only by how unbelievable Dudman is as Clara.

Overall a very good set, though the stories themselves were a little bit forgettable.

I was pleasently surprised with that one.
Most of the Companion Chronicles I have listened to so far just did not do anything for me and left me underwhelmed. There are a few noteable exceptions, like the Peri and the Piscon Paradox, but in general I am not very enthusiastic about them.
I also have not listened to the other Nu-Who Chronicles (9th Doctor and 10th Doctor) because I was just not interested when reading the description.
The 11th Doctor Chronicles I bought on a whim, because the stories and the trailer sounded interesting and the voice actor for the Doctor has done some amazing previous work.
Well, I am happy I bought this, because it completely exceeded my expectations.
The stories are great with some very good writing and the voice acting is top notch.
This release is indeed very fun and it definitely keeps your interest while listening.
Very much recommended.

Bit of an uneven collection. The first and last stories were good, but the two in the middle were meh.

Jacob Dudman is more convincing as the Eleventh Doctor here than in the audio where Eleven meets Twelve for some reason. Bringing in Sardick for one of the stories was a nice choice.

Jacob Dudman is a great impersonator but even he can’t make Amy sound like a woman. Hearing “her” voice as a Scottish male sounded so awful I had to quit listening.

1.1 The Calendar Man - I’m not a huge fan of these audio-hybrids (part audiobook and part audio drama), generally I prefer the audio dramas. Still this was pretty good. The (Eleventh) Doctor and Amy Pond disputing their early days. Not great, but entertaining. This one is also included with the anthology Doctor Who: Anniversary - A 2005-2025 Doctors Collection. (3/5)

1.2 The Top of the Tree -

1.3 The Light Keepers -

1.4 False Coronets -
