Darkwater

Rate this book
Jennifer Hale, orphaned and destitute in the wake of the Civil War, arrived at Darkwater full of hope.

The cold reception she received alarmed her. So did the screams of Alicia, the dying mistress of the plantation. Perhaps more frightening was Jennifer’s dangerous attraction to Walter Dere, her handsome employer.

But all fear was forgotten when Alicia’s death freed Walter to propose to Jennifer. Then Jennifer began developing the same symptoms as Alicia. In desperation, she remembered Alicia’s ravings about voodoo.

Could she learn to protect herself from this violent curse? Or would the evil knowledge lead to a fate worse than death itself?

This is truly a gothic tale in the classic sense. Great for just a pleasure read or an extension activity in the classroom. It is set in the Louisiana bayou just after the Civil War, leaving it a great crossover work between a lit class and a history. True to the Gothic form, there are elements of the supernatural, which opens the door for all sorts of fun research activities in how the mystic and voodoo cultures influenced people at this time and topics like that. The author does a great job of capturing the difference in gender roles without becoming too pedantic. But all of this secondary to fun and suspenseful ride that takes through a world that has disappeared in many places and leaves you guessing up to the last few pages as to how it will all be resolved.
