After returning from New Orleans yesterday I will say this book was helpful in knowing what to expect, though all the restaurants they suggested were expensive. I was unable to get it out while walking around due to the constant rain, but what I read ahead of time was accurate, even though it was written before the pandemic began.

The contributors do a good job being a guide and not taking sides while telling the history of the city and area. That's the mark of a good guidebook.

See how the city of New Orleans has been affected by African, Caribbean, and European cultures. Learn about its infectious music, enticing cuisine, and restless party spirit.

This book covers Bourbon Street, Royal Street, Upper French Quarter, Lower French Quarter, Marigny, and Treme, Warehouse and Central Business, Districts, Garden District, Uptown Mid-City, and beyond.

I can use this book to help guide me through the different areas of the city where to eat and what places to visit.

This was a really good travel guide. I read it before our trip to NOLA because I didn't really know anything about the town outside of Mardi Gras, beignets at Cafe du Monde and the NFL Saints. The book broke the city into 7 distinct sections and highlighted the best and most historical places in each. I was much more excited about our trip after reading it and followed up with another guide book focused on walking tours.

Nice simply guide for hightlights of New Orleans. Type is a bit small and challenging at times, but does a good job of giving an overview of items and quick list of top things to do. Not enough depth to be a real go to guide for more in depth research, but did the job for me on a recent trip.

This review is for the 2017 edition. The book is clearly written for the European reader (most likely British). There are some lovely color photos in the book. There are many maps in the book, a large section of color maps in the back of the book and also a plastic coated pull-out map of the city and down town area. The pull out map includes a street index & detailed info on public transportation. In today's world most of us will just pull out our smart phones for directions but you never know- in case of a loss of cell service, this little map may come in handy.

There are probably much better guide books out there, than this one. It seemed to by lacking in a lot of info. a traveler would desire when planning a trip. For "Places to Stay" there were only 4 pages devoted to the subject. Clearly the author had never stayed at any of the establishments, as it was just a list of addresses, phone numbers and perhaps one short sentence. Now New Orleans, is a city people flock to for it's food. Dinning was not covered well in this book either. Just names, addresses and phone numbers, no real recommendations.

My main complaint about this book is that the print is very small but adding to this is that the print is very light. The headings are in bold print and the main text is in a lighter print. I do not know if this is an error in the printing process or just some editions. It is nearly unreadable the way it is currently printed.

New Orleans is on my bucket list of places to see before I die. I read countless books about this mythological city and this book helped to visualize and understand the place.
This guide made me travel with my mind and I think it's a great guide to use when visiting this town.
Highly recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine

A little outdated, but still great information. I will always be drawn to eyewitness books, maybe because of nostalgia, but I love the diagrams of certain buildings and the way the book is set up. I think they are great travel books.

Printed guidebooks are still useful in 2021. It is great to have so much in one place that inspires a wonderful trip to New Orleans. Yes, everything is on the internet but a book organizes everything and it includes things you would not see just Googling around.

I love Eyewitness Travel Guides and their New Orleans book is top notch. These guides are published in the United Kingdom, a definite plus - their somewhat "outsider" guide is exactly what often jaded American travelers need, refreshingly different from US-based travel guides. They have very interesting and concise overviews, histories, and descriptions of sites and attractions, plus lots of illustrations and great diagrams and maps. We have used them all over the US, Canada, Europe, Australia and New Zealand and recommend them to all travelers, from novice to truly experienced world travelers.

Specifically regarding the New Orleans guide, we used it extensively to learn about the city, its past and present, and to guide us in our sight-seeing and touring activities. Very informative and up-do-date and brimming with useful and interesting information- fits nicely in your coat pocket too. Proper gentlemen should always wear a coat when in NOLA - you never know when you will happen upon a world-renowned restaurant. Never good to have Garcon scowl at your attire, eh?

I've had this book for several years -- having had plans on two separate occasions to visit the city. In both cases, I got sidetracked (once by an airline computer meltdown and the second time by Katrina). Now I finally made it to New Orleans, and needless to say this book is no longer up to date at this point. However, I'd say that it was still pretty useful for the central tourist sites. I needed to call to make sure the restaurant, museum, or whatever was still open -- sometimes that wasn't the case -- but the descriptions still basically applied.

The best travel guide you can bring with you on your trip.
The maps are easy to read and detach for easy transport.
Everything comes with pictures to help you identify and you get many options from which to choose from when it comes to budgeting your trip.
The overall vibe is that you’re traveling for fun and that this guide will help you fully enjoy the city without overloading you with information.
I found that many of the suggestions were perfect for making my trip go without a hitch.
Definitely my top recommendation for anyone planning a trip to the Big Easy.

Great introduction to the city of New Orleans and the whole lower Mississippi River Delta. We just finished a Christmas trip to the Big Easy, and this was an excellent accompanying guide. I’ve always enjoyed the visual details offered in these Eyewitness Travel Guides, focusing traveler’s efforts on key things to do and see, while at the same time offering history and background information, which is very helpful for me. I do wish they gave more details on the National World War II museum, which has grown into one of our nation’s premier museums, and is a must see while in New Orleans.

Definitely my favourite of the DK Eyewitness travel guides. We have been planning a mega-holiday to America, looking at San Fran, Vegas, Orlando and New Orleans so when three out of four travel guides popped up on netgalley I had to request them. For me this one is definitely the best - it's mammoth and full of not only useful but fascinating information about the area, the districts, random factors and where best to eat, drink and sight-see. Highly recommended and this will get a lot of use in the planning of the next holiday.

I absolutely love this book. It has clear crisp photos of all the places of New Orleans that I love. It has maps, a restaurant guide, directory, and the areas of N.O. are color coded through out the tops of the pages. It even has a phrase explanation guide at the back of the book. Places have changed since the printing of this book, but still I highly recommend this book for anyone visiting New Orleans.

Regrettably, this otherwise useful travel guide became instantly out of date after Katrina hit. Having said that, since many of the areas that tourists visit were not as severely affected, a reasonable overview from a tourist's perspective can be gained by perusing this guide. Presumably more recent editions have been updated.

Enjoying this book very much and was happy to get it for only 25 cents at a yard sale. An easy read, but I wish the print was larger! NOLA is one of my favorite cities to visit and I wanted to learn more about the history of the city. Even though my edition is 10 years old, I found several great restaurant ideas for when I'm there next year.

If you’re looking for a travel book for one city DK Eyewitness is very good. It breaks down the city in various districts and includes in depth maps and guides to each section of the city. The New Orleans book was great for breaking down the various sections of the city and helping me maximize my time in New Orleans.

I have been recently obsessed with the idea of going to New Orleans. I mostly blame the shows that I watch all going to/talking about New Orleans. So now I want to go for myself to experience this fantastic place. The DK Travel book tells you the history of New Orleans, shows you each of the areas of New Orleans, and some of the best bars/restaurants/cafe's/etc in those areas.

Out of the 4 New Orleans travel books I got from the library, this one was the most useful. If I traveled there again, I would purchase this book.

So excited! Just found this for sale at the library for 10!cents! Now that we will be living an hour and a half away from New Orleans, I will definitely be using it more.

This was our choice guidebook for the honeymoon. We got it several months before the wedding, and went through it, picking out stuff we wanted to do. I love that it includes really nice pictures so that it holds your interest and is keepsake quality. Lots of information. Guided walking tours

C’était mon premier petit guide du genre. En parallèle avec une recherche active en ligne, ça a été vraiment intéressant. Moi qui ai le sens de l’orientation d’une larve, les cartes m’ont bien aidée !
