He worked as an illustrator for Gazeta Wyborcza, Polityka, Newsweek, Przekrój, Playboy, Wysokie Obcasy, Harvard Business Review, Machina as well as many other newspapers and magazines. For many years, he was the leading graphic illustrator in the monthly Machina magazine.
He also collaborated with the Polish Television TVP I Programme for which he designed (together with Platige Image animation studio) new artwork that won the Golden Eagle award in the Golden Eagles advertisement competition (1999).
In the same competition, he won the Artistic Director of the Year award.
Together with Platige Image he designed the opening sequences for Wiadomości and Teleexpress TV news and song festivals in Sopot and Opole.

Великолепни илюстрации в мащаб, който позволява подобаващо да им се насладиш, интересен и добре структуриран материал с немалко изключително любопитни факти, отличен превод. Освен фактите за дърветата като част от природата, в книгата е обърнато внимание и на тяхната роля в историята и живота на човечеството и приносът им за начина ни на живот; както и на огромното значение на тяхното съхраняване и правилната грижа за горите.
Книгата е абсолютно бижу във всяко отношение.

This oversized book will delight readers with its massive, colorful illustrations and its clear straightforward text. It covers a lot of ground without ever feeling rushed; it explains science and history and different cultural traditions without getting too bogged down in details. Informative, fun, and lovely—did I mention lovely?—this coffee table book for children brings a sense of wonder to this nature study.

Požičala som si túto knihu Stromy, pretože veľmi rada sedím v parkoch a zasnene pozerám hore na stromy, na listy. Uvedomujem si ako veľmi škodíme stromom, ich koreňom, koľko nám toho dávajú. Táto kniha mi ponúkla ešte viac. Aké stromy poznáme, listy, korene, hmyz čo v nich žije. Od mini po najväčšie, od najmladšie po najstaršie.
Čo znamená strom vo všetkých náboženstvách, zázračné stromy, figovníky, od Robina Hooda, povier, legiend, až po Pána prsteňov a ich rozprávajúcich stromov.
Kniha naozaj nielen pre deti, ale i zvedavých dospelých a ľudí, ktorí milujú prírodu ako ja.

Stromy sú teda prakticky rozdelené na menšie celky, ktoré vás chronologicky prevedú ich svetom. Začnete pri poučke, ktorá vám vysvetlí, čo slovo strom znamená a ako jeho zložitý organizmus funguje. Od stavby sa presuniete k rôznym typom stromov po celom svete (môže sa dokonca stať aj to, že navštívite Malého princa a ním neobľúbené Baobaby). Veľké dvojstránkové ilustrácie so sprievodným textom vám vysvetlia, ako určíte ich vek, kto si rád na nich pochutná, kto v nich rád býva, ale i to, že sa medzi nimi nájdu aj parazity. Názorne vám bude ukázané, čo strom je a čo strom už nie je (viac-menej tá druhá možnosť má v tejto knihe veľmi malé zastúpenie, pretože všetko, čo sa tu nachádza, je vlastne strom!), ako sa dokážu prispôsobiť menej pohostinným podmienkam, ktoré kmene sa inšpirovali ich strašidelným zjavom, aby si mohli vytvoriť vlastné legendy o bohoch a stromoch a naopak.
Stromy vás prekvapia aj tým, že vám vyrozprávajú svoj príbeh, ktorý sa začal veľmi, veľmi, veľmi dávno, ale populárnym sa viac-menej stal práve vďaka severskej mytológii (Yggdrasil), pánovi Tolkienovi (Enti) či Robinovi Hoodovi (Sherwoodsky les). Aby toho nebolo málo, poklebetia si s vami o svojich návštevných hodinách, kurzoch šľachtenia (nakoniec, nemať doma bonsaj sa rovná spoločenskej samovražde), starostlivosti o okolie, v ktorom prebývajú, a čo-to spomenú aj o svojom posvätnom význame v rôznych kultúrach i náboženstvách. Ukážu vám, že vedia ísť s trendom, takže architektonické skrášlenia v podobe domov rôznych tvarou postavených v ich veľkých košatých korunách sú módnou vychytávkou, ktorá ich nateraz nerozhádže. Kým priveľmi nezasahujeme týmto skrášlením do ich biotopu, vedia nám toto naše popularizovanie lesného prostredia odpustiť. Samozrejme, posťažujú sa tak trošku i na nekontrolovateľné výruby a umelé lesné porasty. Poohovárajú drevorubačov (od hlavy až po päty) a ukážu vám svojské čaro rodokmeňa. Mať doma knihu o stromoch sa jednoducho oplatí!

Chock full of alluring little facts on the lifecycle of a tree, as well as a nod to information on paper and its origin, and a little on family trees, with accompanying intricate and eye-catching pictures. There was a handful of pages with evolutionary processes, and the author definitely has her view on the age of the earth, etc., but it wasn't over the top. Pretty book that would double as a nice display in a children's room or on your coffee table, with enough information to keep an adult or kid occupied for hours. This was very well done!

I read the English translation. A beautiful book which is both tactile and almost alive - the paper pages connecting with the topic - and each double spread full of information and aliveness. Beautiful hand drawn illustrations and pics that would be hard not to appeal to all and almost all ages, and so many interesting facts and information. Seems to connect me to nature, Heritage, people and practises over the years... Large and a beautiful (large) coffee table book to share / escape into.

Τι υπέροχο, καταπληκτικό βιβλίο για παιδιά Δημοτικού και για όσους αγαπούν την εντυπωσιακή εικονογράφηση ( όπως κι εγώ)! Όπως και οι Μέλισσες, τα Δέντρα είναι ένα πολύ προσεγμένο, καλοφτιαγμένο και εκπαιδευτικό βιβλίο που αξίζει να βρίσκεται στη βιβλιοθήκη μας!

This is another oversize treasure by a brilliant team, and it truly is a history of trees. Beginning with an explanation of trees, their importance in the ecosystem, and their relationship with humankind, Trees progresses into more specific topics. Readers can move straight through, or hop around. We do the latter, reading a page or few at a time. From roots to seeds, from lumberjack tools to famous structures and modes of transport, and from bonsai to baobab, we journeyed around the world and back to prehistoric times. Fans of Sorcha's other books can expect Trees to flow in the same vein. Newcomers to Sorcha's work will see enchanting illustrations depicting myriad trees, tree parts, and tree-related whatnot (think da Vinci's ornithopter and Tolkien's Treebeard.
There were so many appealing sections of the book for T, but he most consistently liked the tree house, tree monster, and vehicles pages. It certainly helps that we were both delighted by the pop-up ornithopter in Leonardo Pop-Ups and that T has an appreciation for Greek myths and Vikings. Seeing a recognizable da Vinci invention, the Trojan horse, and a Viking longboat fostered his connection with not just the transportation topic, but with the book as a whole. In fact, whether your reader is an aspiring botanist, musician, or architect, I expect that he or she will find something special in these pages. The final sentiment that Sorcha and Grajkowski leave us with is one of preservation and respect for nature. Deforestation has far-reaching impact, and while planting trees is important, preserving what we have provides greater protection. "Future generations deserve a forest like the one our ancestors had, a forest of trees that will live for centuries."

An absolutely beautifully illustrated, information packed, fun filled book for all ages.
This book is A3 size, which is great for young kids, but also inviting for the nature loving adult and inside it is packed with a heap of information, about trees (obviously), and how they have been used, how they’re still used, how they grow, how to identify trees, different types of leaves, the seasons, root systems, seeds and the spreading of seeds, different species of trees and where they grow, the worlds tallest trees and so much more.
The illustrations are just beautiful. They’re very large and colorful, and the writing in the book is a great size.
This book has been very well thought out and gives information on trees from all over the world, and from different times in history.
This is a book that is recommend to any child, nature lover (of any age), teachers, nannies etc.
As a nanny, I’ve read this book to my little charges (ages 2, 2 and 5) and we’ve all (myself and the kids) have thoroughly enjoyed it. We’ve all learnt a lot, and we’ve all really enjoyed looking at and studying the illustrations in the book.

Също както "Пчелите", "Дърветата" (изд. "Дакелче") е с илюстрации на феноменалния полски илюстратор Пьотр Соха и безупречна полиграфия. Текстът този път е на Войчех Грайковски, а пътуването в света на дърветата е просто зашеметяващо.
След като изясняват накратко какво са дърветата и кои растителни видове не спада към тях, автор и илюстратор ни превеждат през устройството им. Отделни табла са посветени на листата, корените и плодовете им.
Ще се срещнете и с някои наистина поразяващи дървета, които са ендемити – срещат се единствено в неголеми области. Нима не звучат загадъчно кърваво драконово дърво, дърво на пътешественика или чилийска араукария? Последната имах късмет да видя на живо в Кралските ботанически градини в Кю в Лондон и веднага ми стана ясно защо е наричана също и Monkey puzzle...

Μέσα από τις λεπτομερείς, σχεδόν αληθοφανείς απεικονίσεις των δέντρων που δημιούργησε ο Socha γνωρίζουμε δέντρα ψηλά και δέντρα κοντά, δέντρα ενδημικά και εξωτικά, άλλα προϊστορικά. Ενα σαλόνι είναι αφιερωμένο στα εντυπωσιακά μπαομπάμπ κι ένα άλλο στα μικροσκοπικά μπονζάι, ένα μιλά για τους “εχθρούς” των δέντρων κι ένα άλλο για τους κατοίκους τους. Η εγκάρσια τομή της γηραίοτερης σεκόγιας του κόσμου, η οποία όταν κόπηκε το 1900 ήταν ήδη 3.266 ετών, λειτουργεί σαν ένα χρονολόγιο της ιστορίας του ανθρώπινου γένους για το διάστημα της ζωής του δέντρου αυτού που φύτρωσε στη Νεβάδα των ΗΠΑ περίπου την εποχή που άνθρωπος ανακάλυψε τον σίδηρο.

Inhalt:
Welche unterschiedlichen Arten von Bäumen gibt es eigentlich und wodurch unterscheiden sie sich von anderen Gewächsen? Welche Blätter gehören zu welchem Baum und was passiert während der vier Jahreszeiten mit den unterschiedlichen Baumtypen? Wozu sind die Wurzeln gut und wie ernähren sich Bäume? Dies sind einige der typischen Fragen, die sich im Zusammenhang mit Bäumen zunächst einmal stellen und die vermutlichen in den meisten Sachbüchern zu diesem Thema aufgegriffen und beantwortet werden.. Auch Piotr Socha und Wojciech Grajkowski geben auf diese Fragen ausführliche Antworten. Aber: Das Buch geht weit über diese Themen hinaus. So erfahren wir in diesem Sachbilderbuch nicht nur, wo bestimmte Bäume verbreitet sind, sondern auch welche Rolle sie in Mythen, Legenden und Märchen spielen oder welches die höchsten, die dicksten oder die ältesten Bäume auf der Welt sind. Und wem das noch nicht reicht, den interessiert vielleicht, was es mit den mexikanischen ‚Lebensbäumen‘ auf sich hat und was Luftwurzeln sind.
Meine Meinung:
Was für eine wahre und wichtige Botschaft sich doch hinter diesem so passenden Zitat verstecken, das am Ende der Einleitung des neuen Sachbilderbuches von Piotr Socha steht. Nach dem erfolgreichen Sachbuch Bienen ist bereits im letzten Jahr (2018) ein neues Werk des Autors und Illustrators erschienen. Bei diesem hat allerdings jemand anderes den Text übernommen und Piotr Socha hat sich ganz den Illustrationen gewidmet.
Ich gebe zu, ich war bei dem Thema erst skeptisch. Ein ganzes Buch nur über Bäume? Was soll es da denn so viel drüber zu erzählen geben? Ich konnte es mir wirklich nicht so ganz vorstellen, habe mich dann aber (zum Glück!) doch für dieses Sachbilderbuch entschieden und ihm eine Chance gegeben, nicht allein weil ich so viel Gutes über das Buch gehört habe – sondern auch wegen des wieder einmal sehr ansprechenden Covers, auf dem meine Tochter übrigens ein ‚Baummonster‘ erkennt – womit sie vielleicht auch gar nicht so falsch liegt.
Schon seit einiger Zeit geht es bei Sachbilderbüchern nicht mehr nur allein um den Wissenserwerb. Während Sachbücher früher eher unbeliebt waren (zumindest bei mir), weil sie einem auf eine nicht sehr ästhetische Art und Weise Informationen vermittelt haben, sind sie heute in den unterschiedlichsten Formen und Arten verfügbar. Es gibt sie mit Klappen, mit Pop-Up-Elementen, mit ausklappbaren Seiten und mit sehr anspruchsvollen und ansprechenden Illustrationen. Sie sind neben der Informationsquelle auch zur Kunstform geworden – die den Ansprüchen von Kindern UND Erwachsenen genügen.
In diesem Bilderbuch machen die Kombination aus Bild und Text das Lesen, Betrachten und Lernen zu einem einzigartigen Erlebnis. Die großformatigen und dominanten Bilder sind teilweise sehr farbenfroh, wobei in diesem Buch die Farben Grün und Braun definitiv dominieren. Die Illustrationen befinden sich irgendwo zwischen Abstraktion und Fotorealismus. Einige Elemente wirken sehr detailgetreu, während andere Elemente stark abstrahiert und zum Teil auch verniedlicht wirken. Die Tiere und vor allem die Personen wirken oft eher lustig und haben nicht selten eine übergroße Nase im Gesicht. Teilweise wird durch die Bilder eine einzelne Szene dargestellt, oft handelt es sich aber um viele Einzelbilder zu einem Thema. Diese sind oft beschriftet oder nummeriert, sodass man sie beim Lesen des Textes (relativ) schnell wiederfinden kann.
Die Texte sind Fließtexte, die sich jeweils links oder rechts von den Illustrationen befinden. Sie sind relativ lang, weshalb sie in mehrere Sinnabschnitte geteilt sind. Die Schrift und die Zeilenabstände sind allerdings recht klein, weswegen sich die Texte zum Selberlesen frühestens ab der dritten Klasse eignen. Die Texte sind gut verständlich, beinhalten aber auch komplizierte und längere Begriffe, die gegebenenfalls bei Kindern Erklärungsbedarf erfordern. Die Themen im Sachbilderbuch sind sehr vielfältig. Neben allgemeinen Themen, die sich in den meisten Sachbilderbüchern zum Thema ‚Bäume‘ finden, gibt es viele Bereiche, mit denen vermutlich niemand gerechnet hätte. Es gibt ein Kapitel/eine Tafel zu Baumungeheuern, zu frisierten Bäumen, zu Bauwerken aus Holz, zu Naturgewalten und zu Holzschnitzereien. Die Themen sind so gewählt, dass für jeden Geschmack etwas dabei ist und man mit dem Betrachten und Lesen gar nicht mehr aufhören möchte.
Ein kleines Manko gegenüber dem Bienen-Buch ist, dass es keine Baum-Zeitung gibt – im ersten Sachbilderbuch gab es zwei Tafeln mit dem Bienen-Blättchen, auf dem sich weitere interessanten Informationen befunden haben. Das war eine tolle Idee! Außerdem gibt es, wie bei Bienen, leider auch kein Inhaltsverzeichnis und kein Begriffsverzeichnis, was das finden von einzelnen Tafeln oder Themen doch etwas erschwert.

Die Informationen gehen weit über unsere Erwartungen an ein derartiges Sachbilderbuch hinaus und werden durch wunderbare, farbenprächtige Illustrationen von Piotr Socha noch stark aufgewertet. Ganz klare Kaufempfehlung und 5 Sterne, trotz der kleinen Kritik.
Welche unterschiedlichen Arten von Bäumen gibt es eigentlich und wodurch unterscheiden sie sich von anderen Gewächsen? Welche Blätter gehören zu welchem Baum und was passiert während der vier Jahreszeiten mit den unterschiedlichen Baumtypen? Wozu sind die Wurzeln gut und wie ernähren sich Bäume? Dies sind einige der typischen Fragen, die sich im Zusammenhang mit Bäumen zunächst einmal stellen und die vermutlichen in den meisten Sachbüchern zu diesem Thema aufgegriffen und beantwortet werden.. Auch Piotr Socha und Wojciech Grajkowski geben auf diese Fragen ausführliche Antworten. Aber: Das Buch geht weit über diese Themen hinaus. So erfahren wir in diesem Sachbilderbuch nicht nur, wo bestimmte Bäume verbreitet sind, sondern auch welche Rolle sie in Mythen, Legenden und Märchen spielen oder welches die höchsten, die dicksten oder die ältesten Bäume auf der Welt sind. Und wem das noch nicht reicht, den interessiert vielleicht, was es mit den mexikanischen ‚Lebensbäumen‘ auf sich hat und was Luftwurzeln sind.
Meine Meinung:
Was für eine wahre und wichtige Botschaft sich doch hinter diesem so passenden Zitat verstecken, das am Ende der Einleitung des neuen Sachbilderbuches von Piotr Socha steht. Nach dem erfolgreichen Sachbuch Bienen ist bereits im letzten Jahr (2018) ein neues Werk des Autors und Illustrators erschienen. Bei diesem hat allerdings jemand anderes den Text übernommen und Piotr Socha hat sich ganz den Illustrationen gewidmet.
Ich gebe zu, ich war bei dem Thema erst skeptisch. Ein ganzes Buch nur über Bäume? Was soll es da denn so viel drüber zu erzählen geben? Ich konnte es mir wirklich nicht so ganz vorstellen, habe mich dann aber (zum Glück!) doch für dieses Sachbilderbuch entschieden und ihm eine Chance gegeben, nicht allein weil ich so viel Gutes über das Buch gehört habe – sondern auch wegen des wieder einmal sehr ansprechenden Covers, auf dem meine Tochter übrigens ein ‚Baummonster‘ erkennt – womit sie vielleicht auch gar nicht so falsch liegt.
Schon seit einiger Zeit geht es bei Sachbilderbüchern nicht mehr nur allein um den Wissenserwerb. Während Sachbücher früher eher unbeliebt waren (zumindest bei mir), weil sie einem auf eine nicht sehr ästhetische Art und Weise Informationen vermittelt haben, sind sie heute in den unterschiedlichsten Formen und Arten verfügbar. Es gibt sie mit Klappen, mit Pop-Up-Elementen, mit ausklappbaren Seiten und mit sehr anspruchsvollen und ansprechenden Illustrationen. Sie sind neben der Informationsquelle auch zur Kunstform geworden – die den Ansprüchen von Kindern UND Erwachsenen genügen.
In diesem Bilderbuch machen die Kombination aus Bild und Text das Lesen, Betrachten und Lernen zu einem einzigartigen Erlebnis. Die großformatigen und dominanten Bilder sind teilweise sehr farbenfroh, wobei in diesem Buch die Farben Grün und Braun definitiv dominieren. Die Illustrationen befinden sich irgendwo zwischen Abstraktion und Fotorealismus. Einige Elemente wirken sehr detailgetreu, während andere Elemente stark abstrahiert und zum Teil auch verniedlicht wirken. Die Tiere und vor allem die Personen wirken oft eher lustig und haben nicht selten eine übergroße Nase im Gesicht. Teilweise wird durch die Bilder eine einzelne Szene dargestellt, oft handelt es sich aber um viele Einzelbilder zu einem Thema. Diese sind oft beschriftet oder nummeriert, sodass man sie beim Lesen des Textes (relativ) schnell wiederfinden kann.
Die Texte sind Fließtexte, die sich jeweils links oder rechts von den Illustrationen befinden. Sie sind relativ lang, weshalb sie in mehrere Sinnabschnitte geteilt sind. Die Schrift und die Zeilenabstände sind allerdings recht klein, weswegen sich die Texte zum Selberlesen frühestens ab der dritten Klasse eignen. Die Texte sind gut verständlich, beinhalten aber auch komplizierte und längere Begriffe, die gegebenenfalls bei Kindern Erklärungsbedarf erfordern. Die Themen im Sachbilderbuch sind sehr vielfältig. Een redelijk boek al vond ik de tekst erg droog geschreven en ik merkte dat ik erg verveeld raakte wat toch jammer is want het is een leuk thema. Gelukkig maakten de illustraties alles weer goed, ik vond de stijl van de tekeningen erg leuk al moet ik zeggen dat de ogen op de dieren hilarisch waren. Dus ja, een boek dat ik vooral zou aanraden vanwege de prachtige platen.

This week the country of Ethiopia made headlines when they planted 350 million trees in twelve hours. Absolutely fascinating book. I loved the informational text and I adored the illustrations - a balance between realism and cartoony that I really appreciated. I like that the book covered so many different aspects trees: leaves and trunks and roots, trees around the world, trees through the seasons, the animals and other organisms that depend on or live symbiotically with trees. Trees as a graphing image for genealogy and evolution. Trees as symbols in religion and mythology. The importance of trees in ecosystems and nature. Trees as a source of wood, used for buildings, vehicles, objects. Totally comprehensive approach, which I wasn't really expecting. Also, I love that this book is oversized - more room for illustrations and it's physical heft and size make it feel more emotionally weighty, as well.

I love trees! And I almost love this book. It's well-written and beautifully illustrated. Trees are shown not only as their biologic and botanic selves, but as art, buildings, historically, as homes for animals...in so many aspects and dimensions.
Why did I not give this lovely book 5 stars? Because the numbering system is SO ANNOYING! The numbers are assigned arbitrarily, from left to right, but when you come upon them in the passages, they're out of order and so annoying to match up. I know it was done for artistry, and if I had read the book slowly it probably would have worked, but to look at a picture and try to find out its significance was difficult.

My friend and I accidentally found this book in a souvenirshop of a castle during our holiday in Austria.
Both of us being biologists really fell in love with the books style. It combined the biology of nature, history with beautiful artworks. My friend bought the book and I immediately looked up the name of Piotr Socha the illustrator, because I wanted to learn more about his work. And I can only say that he is a very very talented person.
Overall, I can only say that this book is beautifully and easy to understand written, both children and adults will have a great time reading it. It is like a short adventure through the nature with stunning and educational impressions!
